Catalan pairs and Fishburn triples
Disanto, Ferrari, Pinzani and Rinaldi have introduced the concept of 'Catalan pair', which is a pair of partial orders (S,R) satisfying certain axioms. They have shown that Catalan pairs provide a natural description of objects belonging to several classes enumerated by Catalan numbers. In this paper, we first introduce another axiomatic structure (T,R), which we call the 'Catalan pair of type 2', which describes certain Catalan objects that do not seem to have an easy interpretation in terms of the original Catalan pairs. We then introduce 'Fishburn triples', which are relational structures obtained as a direct common generalization of the two types of Catalan pairs. Fishburn triples encode, in a natural way, the structure of objects enumerated by the Fishburn numbers, such as interval orders or Fishburn matrices. This connection between Catalan objects and Fishburn objects allows us to associate known statistics on Catalan objects with analogous statistics of Fishburn objects. As our main result, we then show that several known equidistribution results on Catalan statistics can be generalized to analogous results for Fishburn statistics.

The $(m,n)$-rational $q, t$-Catalan polynomials for $m=3$ and their $q,t$-symmetry
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new statistic, skip, on rational $(3,n)$-Dyck paths and define a marked rank word for each path when $n$ is not a multiple of 3. If a triple of valid statistics (area, skip, dinv) are given, we have an algorithm to construct the marked rank word corresponding to the triple. By considering all valid triples we give an explicit formula for the $(m,n)$-rational $q,t$-Catalan polynomials when $m=3$. Then there is a natural bijection on the triples of statistics (area, skips, dinv) which exchanges the statistics area and dinv while fixing the skip. Thus we prove the $q,t$-symmetry of $(m,n)$-rational $q, t$-Catalan polynomials for $m=3$.
Convolutions of Tribonacci, Fuss-Catalan, and Motzkin sequences
Published in Fibonacci Quart. 52 (2014), no. 5, 54-60 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a class of sequences, defined by means of partial Bell polynomials, that contains a basis for the space of linear recurrence sequences with constant coefficients as well as other well-known sequences like Catalan and Motzkin. For the family of `Bell sequences' considered in this paper, we give a general multifold convolution formula and illustrate our result with a few explicit examples.

The Super Patalan Numbers
Published in J. Integer Seq. 18 (2015), Article 15.3.3 • Search Publication
We introduce the super Patalan numbers, a generalization of the super Catalan numbers in the sense of Gessel, and prove a number of properties analagous to those of the super Catalan numbers. The super Patalan numbers generalize the super Catalan numbers similarly to how the Patalan numbers generalize the Catalan numbers.

The freeness of Ish arrangements
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A Volume 146, February 2017, Pages 169-183 • View PublicationBIB
The Ish arrangement was introduced by Armstrong to give a new interpretation of the $q,t$-Catalan numbers of Garsia and Haiman. Armstrong and Rhoades showed that there are some striking similarities between the Shi arrangement and the Ish arrangement and posed some problems. One of them is whether the Ish arrangement is a free arrangement or not. In this paper, we verify that the Ish arrangement is supersolvable and hence free. Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the deleted Ish arrangement to be free.

Some observations about super Catalan numbers, corresponding orthogonal polynomials, and their q-analogues
In this note we give a survey about polynomials whose moments are multiples of super Catalan numbers and explore two different kinds of q-analogues.
The polytope of Tesler matrices
Published in B. Sel. Math. New Ser. (2017) 23: 425 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the Tesler polytope Tes_n(a_1,a_2,...,a_n), whose integer points are the Tesler matrices of size n with nonnegative integer hook sums a_1,a_2,...,a_n. We show that Tes_n(a) is a flow polytope and therefore the number of Tesler matrices is counted by the type A_n Kostant partition function evaluated at (a_1,a_2,...,a_n,-a_1-...-a_n). We describe the faces of this polytope in terms of "Tesler tableaux" and characterize when the polytope is simple. We prove that the h-vector of Tes_n(a) when all a_i>0 is given by the Mahonian numbers and calculate the volume of Tes_n(1,1,...,1) to be a product of consecutive Catalan numbers multiplied by the number of standard Young tableaux of staircase shape.
Colored compositions, Invert operator and elegant compositions with the "black tie"
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Vol. 335, 1-7, 2014 • View PublicationBIB
This paper shows how the study of colored compositions of integers reveals some unexpected and original connection with the Invert operator. The Invert operator becomes an important tool to solve the problem of directly counting the number of colored compositions for any coloration. The interesting consequences arising from this relationship also give an immediate and simple criterion to determine whether a sequence of integers counts the number of some colored compositions. Applications to Catalan and Fibonacci numbers naturally emerge, allowing to clearly answer to some open questions. Moreover, the definition of colored compositions with the "black tie" provides straightforward combinatorial proofs to a new identity involving multinomial coefficients and to a new closed formula for the Invert operator. Finally, colored compositions with the "black tie" give rise to a new combinatorial interpretation for the convolution operator, and to a new and easy method to count the number of parts of colored compositions.

Ascent sequences and the binomial convolution of Catalan numbers
In this paper, we consider two sets of pattern-avoiding ascent sequences: those avoiding both 201 and 210 and those avoiding 0021. In each case we show that the number of such ascent sequences is given by the binomial convolution of the Catalan numbers. The result for $\{201, 210\}$-avoiders completes a family of results given by Baxter and the current author in a previous paper. The result for 0021-avoiders, together with previous work of Duncan, Steingrímsson, Mansour, and Shattuck, completes the Wilf classification of single patterns of length 4 for ascent sequences.

A unifying poset perspective on alternating sign matrices, plane partitions, Catalan objects, tournaments, and tableaux
Published in Adv Appl Math 46 (2011), no. 4, 583-609 • Search Publication
Alternating sign matrices (ASMs) are square matrices with entries 0, 1, or -1 whose rows and columns sum to 1 and whose nonzero entries alternate in sign. We present a unifying perspective on ASMs and other combinatorial objects by studying a certain tetrahedral poset and its subposets. We prove the order ideals of these subposets are in bijection with a variety of interesting combinatorial objects, including ASMs, totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions (TSSCPPs), staircase shaped semistandard Young tableaux, Catalan objects, tournaments, and totally symmetric plane partitions. We prove product formulas counting these order ideals and give the rank generating function of some of the corresponding lattices of order ideals. We also prove an expansion of the tournament generating function as a sum over TSSCPPs. This result is analogous to a result of Robbins and Rumsey expanding the tournament generating function as a sum over alternating sign matrices.

A general theory of Wilf-equivalence for Catalan structures
Published • View PublicationBIB
The existence of apparently coincidental equalities (also called Wilf-equivalences) between the enumeration sequences, or generating functions, of various hereditary classes of combinatorial structures has attracted significant interest. We investigate such coincidences among non-crossing matchings and a variety of other Catalan structures including Dyck paths, 231-avoiding permutations and plane forests. In particular we consider principal classes defined by not containing an occurrence of a single given structure. An easily computed equivalence relation among structures is described such that if two structures are equivalent then the associated principal classes have the same enumeration sequence. We give an asymptotic estimate of the number of equivalence classes of this relation among structures of a given size and show that it is exponentially smaller than the corresponding Catalan number. In other words these "coincidental" equalities are in fact very common among principal classes. Our results also allow us to prove, in a unified and bijective manner, several known Wilf-equivalences from the literature.

Counting With Irrational Tiles
We introduce and study the number of tilings of unit height rectangles with irrational tiles. We prove that the class of sequences of these numbers coincides with the class of diagonals of N-rational generating functions and a class of certain binomial multisums. We then give asymptotic applications and establish connections to hypergeometric functions and Catalan numbers.

Permutations generated by a depth 2 and infinite stack in series are algebraic
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the class of permutations generated by passing an ordered sequence $12\dots n$ through a stack of depth 2 and an infinite stack in series is in bijection with an unambiguous context-free language, where a permutation of length $n$ is encoded by a string of length $3n$. It follows that the sequence counting the number of permutations of each length has an algebraic generating function. We use the explicit context-free language to compute the generating function: \begin{align*} \sum_{n\geq 0} c_n t^n &= \frac{(1+q)\left(1+5q-q^2-q^3-(1-q)\sqrt{(1-q^2)(1-4q-q^2)}\right)}{8q} \end{align*} where $c_n$ is the number of permutations of length $n$ that can be generated, and $q \equiv q(t) = \frac{1-2t-\sqrt{1-4t}}{2t}$ is a simple variant of the Catalan generating function. This in turn implies that $c_n^{1/n} \to 2+2\sqrt{5}$.

Chebyshev Polynomials and Statistics on a New Collection of Words in the Catalan Family
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, a new class of words, denoted by L_n, was shown to be in bijection with a subset of the Dyck paths of length 2n having cardinality given by the (n-1)-st Catalan number. Here, we consider statistics on L_n recording the number of occurrences of a letter i. In the cases i = 0 and i = 1, we are able to determine explicit expressions for the number of members of L_n containing a given number of zeros or ones, which generalizes the prior result. To do so, we make use of recurrences to derive a functional equation satisfied by the generating function, which we solve by a new method employing Chebyshev polynomials. Recurrences and generating function formulas are also provided in the case of general i.

Mixed volumes of hypersimplices
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider mixed volumes of combinations of hypersimplices. These numbers, called "mixed Eulerian numbers", were first considered by A. Postnikov and were shown to satisfy many properties related to Eulerian numbers, Catalan numbers, binomial coefficients, etc. We give a general combinatorial interpretation for mixed Eulerian numbers and prove the above properties combinatorially. In particular, we show that each mixed Eulerian number enumerates a certain set of permutations in $S_n$. We also prove several new properties of mixed Eulerian numbers using our methods. Finally, we consider a type $B$ analogue of mixed Eulerian numbers and give an analogous combinatorial interpretation for these numbers.

m-dendriform algebras
The Fuss-Catalan numbers are a generalization of the Catalan numbers. They enumerate a large class of objects and in particular m-Dyck paths and m+1-ary trees. Recently, F. Bergeron defined an analogue for generic m of the Tamari order on classical Dyck words. The author and J.-Y. Thibon showed that the combinatorial Hopf algebras related to these m-Tamari orders are defined thanks to the same monoid, the sylvester monoid, as in the m=1 case and that all related Hopf algebras also have m analogues. We present here the m-generalization of another construction on Catalan sets: the dendriform algebras. These algebras are presented in two different ways: first by relations between the m+1 operations, relations that are very similar to the classical relations; and then by explicit operations splitting the classical dendriform operations defined on words into new operations. We then investigate their dual and show they are Koszul.
Sweep maps: A continuous family of sorting algorithms
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a family of maps on lattice paths, called sweep maps, that assign levels to each step in the path and sort steps according to their level. Surprisingly, although sweep maps act by sorting, they appear to be bijective in general. The sweep maps give concise combinatorial formulas for the q,t-Catalan numbers, the higher q,t-Catalan numbers, the q,t-square numbers, and many more general polynomials connected to the nabla operator and rational Catalan combinatorics. We prove that many algorithms that have appeared in the literature (including maps studied by Andrews, Egge, Gorsky, Haglund, Hanusa, Jones, Killpatrick, Krattenthaler, Kremer, Orsina, Mazin, Papi, Vaille, and the present authors) are all special cases of the sweep maps or their inverses. The sweep maps provide a very simple unifying framework for understanding all of these algorithms. We explain how inversion of the sweep map (which is an open problem in general) can be solved in known special cases by finding a "bounce path" for the lattice paths under consideration. We also define a generalized sweep map acting on words over arbitrary alphabets with arbitrary weights, which is also conjectured to be bijective.

The Reciprocal Pascal Matrix
The reciprocal Pascal matrix is the Hadamard inverse of the symmetric Pascal matrix. We show that the ordinary matrix inverse of the reciprocal Pascal matrix has integer elements. The proof uses two factorizations of the matrix of super Catalan numbers.

TASEP and Planar Binary Trees: A Combinatorial Approach
We give a simple explanation why the stationary state of the 1D TASEP model with open boundaries is related to the Catalan numbers. Our construction is based on planar binary trees and provides a combinatorial solution of the stationary state. We discuss the relation to Catalan tableaux approaches in an appendix.
