Ascent sequences are those consisting of non-negative integers in which the size of each letter is restricted by the number of ascents preceding it and have been shown to be equinumerous with the (2+2)-free posets of the same size. Furthermore, connections to a variety of other combinatorial structures, including set partitions, permutations, and certain integer matrices, have been made. In this paper, we identify all members of the (4,4)-Wilf equivalence class for ascent sequences corresponding to the Catalan number C_n=\frac{1}{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}. This extends recent work concerning avoidance of a single pattern and provides apparently new combinatorial interpretations for C_n. In several cases, the subset of the class consisting of those members having exactly m ascents is given by the Narayana number N_{n,m+1}=\frac{1}{n}\binom{n}{m+1}\binom{n}{m}.

We give formulae for computing Kronecker coefficients occurring in the expansion of $s_μ*s_ν$, where both $μ$ and $ν$ are nearly rectangular, and have smallest parts equal to either 1 or 2. In particular, we study $s_{(n,n-1,1)}*s_{(n,n)}$, $s_{(n-1,n-1,1)}*s_{(n,n-1)}$, $s_{(n-1,n-1,2)}*s_{(n,n)}$, $s_{(n-1,n-1,1,1)}*s_{(n,n)}$ and $s_{(n,n,1)}*s_{(n,n,1)}$. Our approach relies on the interplay between manipulation of symmetric functions and the representation theory of the symmetric group, mainly employing the Pieri rule and a useful identity of Littlewood. As a consequence of these formulae, we also derive an expression enumerating certain standard Young tableaux of bounded height, in terms of the Motzkin and Catalan numbers.
A weighted interpretation for the super Catalan numbers
The super Catalan numbers $T(m,n)=(2m)!(2n)!/2m!n!(m+n)!$ are integers which generalize the Catalan numbers. With the exception of a few values of $m$, no combinatorial interpretation in known for $T(m,n)$. We give a weighted interpretation for $T(m,n)$ and develop a technique that converts this weighted interpretation into a conventional combinatorial interpretation in the case $m=2$.
On super Catalan polynomials
We present a $q$-analog of the super Catalan number $(2m)!(2n)!/2m!n!(m+n)!$, which also generalizes the $q$-Catalan numbers $c_n(λ)$, due to Fürlinger and Hofbauer, for $λ=0$ and $λ=1$. We give a combinatorial interpretation for this analog when $m=2$.

We show new bijective proofs of previously known formulas for the number of regions of some deformations of the braid arrangement, by means of a bijection between the no-broken-circuit sets of the corresponding integral gain graphs and some kinds of labelled binary trees. This leads to new bijective proofs for the Shi, Catalan, and similar hyperplane arrangements.
Rational parking functions and Catalan numbers

The classical parking functions, counted by the Cayley number (n+1)^(n-1), carry a natural permutation representation of the symmetric group S_n in which the number of orbits is the n'th Catalan number. In this paper, we will generalize this setup to rational parking functions indexed by a pair (a,b) of coprime positive integers. We show that these parking functions, which are counted by b^(a-1), carry a permutation representation of S_a in which the number of orbits is a rational Catalan number. We compute the Frobenius characteristic of the S_a-module of (a,b)-parking functions. Next we propose a combinatorial formula for a q-analogue of the rational Catalan numbers and relate this formula to a new combinatorial model for q-binomial coefficients. Finally, we discuss q,t-analogues of rational Catalan numbers and parking functions (generalizing the shuffle conjecture for the classical case) and present several conjectures.
A New Approach to Enumerating Statistics Modulo $n$
We find a new approach to computing the remainder of a polynomial modulo $x^n-1$; such a computation is called modular enumeration. Given a polynomial with coefficients from a commutative $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra, our first main result constructs the remainder simply from the coefficients of residues of the polynomial modulo $Φ_d(x)$ for each $d\mid n$. Since such residues can often be found to have nice values, this simplifies a number of modular enumeration problems; indeed in some cases, such residues are already known while the related modular enumeration problem has remained unsolved. We list six such cases which our technique makes easy to solve. Our second main result is a formula for the unique polynomial $a$ such that $a \equiv f \mod Φ_n(x)$ and $a\equiv 0 \mod x^d-1$ for each proper divisor $d$ of $n$.
We find a formula for remainders of $q$-multinomial coefficients and for remainders of $q$-Catalan numbers modulo $q^n-1$, reducing each problem to a finite number of cases for any fixed $n$. In the prior case, we solve an open problem posed by Hartke and Radcliffe. In considering $q$-Catalan numbers modulo $q^n-1$, we discover a cyclic group operation on certain lattice paths which behaves predictably with regard to major index. We also make progress on a problem in modular enumeration on subset sums posed by Kitchloo and Pachter.

The Catalan numbers $C_k$ were first studied by Euler, in the context of enumerating triangulations of polygons $P_{k+2}$. Among the many generalizations of this sequence, the Fuss-Catalan numbers $C^{(d)}_k$ count enumerations of dissections of polygons $P_{k(d-1)+2}$ into $(d+1)$-gons. In this paper, we provide a formula enumerating polygonal dissections of $(n+2)$-gons, classified by partitions $λ$ of $[n]$. We connect these counts $a_λ$ to reverse series arising from iterated polynomials. Generalizing this further, we show that the coefficients of the reverse series of polynomials $x=z-\sum_{j=0}^{\infty} b_j z^{j+1}$ enumerate colored polygonal dissections.

In this note, we provide bijective proofs of some identities involving the Bell number, as previously requested. Our arguments may be extended to yield a generalization in terms of complete Bell polynomials. We also provide a further interpretation for a related difference of Catalan numbers in terms of the inclusion-exclusion principle.
The Location of the First Ascent in a 123-Avoiding Permutation
It is natural to ask, given a permutation with no three-term ascending subsequence, at what index the first ascent occurs. We shall show, using both a recursion and a bijection, that the number of 123-avoiding permutations at which the first ascent occurs at positions $k,k+1$ is given by the $k$-fold Catalan convolution $C_{n,k}$. For $1\le k\le n$, $C_{n,k}$ is also seen to enumerate the number of 123-avoiding permutations with $n$ being in the $k$th position. Two interesting discrete probability distributions, related obliquely to the Poisson and geometric random variables, are derived as a result.

Guibert and Linusson introduced the family of doubly alternating Baxter permutations, i.e. Baxter permutations $σ\in S_n$, such that $σ$ and $σ^{-1}$ are alternating. They proved that the number of such permutations in $S_{2n}$ and $S_{2n+1}$ is the Catalan number $C_n$. In this paper we explore the expected limit shape of such permutations, following the approach by Miner and Pak.

In [9], Terao proved the freeness of multi-Coxeter arrangements with constant multiplicities by giving an explicit construction of bases. Combining it with algebro-geometric method, Yoshinaga proved the freeness of the extended Catalan and Shi arrangements in [11]. However, there have been no explicit constructions of the bases for the logarithmic derivation modules of the extended Catalan and Shi arrangements. In this paper, we give the first explicit construction of them when the root system is of the type $A_2$.

A beautiful recent conjecture of D. Armstrong predicts the average size of a partition that is simultaneously an $s$-core and a $t$-core, where $s$ and $t$ are coprime. Our goal is to prove this conjecture when $t=s+1$. These simultaneous $(s,s+1)$-core partitions, which are enumerated by Catalan numbers, have average size $\binom{s+1}{3}/2$.

At the end of the 1960s, Knuth characterised the permutations that can be sorted using a stack in terms of forbidden patterns. He also showed that they are in bijection with Dyck paths and thus counted by the Catalan numbers. Subsequently, Even \& Itai, Pratt and Tarjan studied permutations that can be sorted using two stacks in parallel. This problem is significantly harder. In particular, a sortable permutation can now be sorted by several distinct sequences of stack operations. Moreover, in order to be sortable, a permutation must avoid infinitely many patterns. The associated counting question has remained open for 40 years. We solve it by giving a pair of functional equations that characterise the generating function of permutations that can be sorted with two parallel stacks. The first component of this system describes the generating function Q(a,u) of square lattice loops confined to the positive quadrant, counted by the length and the number of North-West and East-South factors. Our analysis of the asymptotic number of sortable permutations relies at the moment on two intriguing conjectures dealing with the series Q(a,u). We prove that they hold for loops confined to the upper half plane, or not confined at all. They remain open for quarter plane loops. Given the recent activity on walks confined to cones, we believe them to be attractive per se.
Some remarks about q-Chebyshev polynomials and q-Catalan numbers and related results
The moments of the Lucas polynomials and of the Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind are (multiples of) central binomial coefficients and the moments of the Fibonacci polynomials and of the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind are Catalan numbers. In this survey paper we present some generalizations of these results together with various q-analogues.
Comparing two matrices of generalized moments defined by continued fraction expansions
We study two matrices $N$ and $M$ defined by the parameters of equivalent $S$- and $J$-continued fraction expansions, and compare them by examining the product $N^{-1}M$. Using examples based on the Catalan numbers, the little Schröder numbers and powers of $q$, we indicate that this matrix product is an object worthy of study. In the case of the little Schröder numbers, we find that the matrix $N$ has an interleaved structure based on two Riordan arrays.

The set of dominant regions of the $k$-Catalan arrangement of a crystallographic root system $Φ$ is a well-studied object enumerated by the Fuß-Catalan number $Cat^{(k)}(Φ)$. It is natural to refine this enumeration by considering floors and ceilings of dominant regions. A conjecture of Armstrong states that counting dominant regions by their number of floors of a certain height gives the same distribution as counting dominant regions by their number of ceilings of the same height. We prove this conjecture using a bijection that provides even more refined enumerative information.
A Determinantal Formula for Catalan Tableaux and TASEP Probabilities

We present a determinantal formula for the steady state probability of each state of the TASEP (Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process) with open boundaries, a 1D particle model that has been studied extensively and displays rich combinatorial structure. These steady state probabilities are computed by the enumeration of Catalan tableaux, which are certain Young diagrams filled with $α$'s and $β$'s that satisfy some conditions on the rows and columns. We construct a bijection from the Catalan tableaux to weighted lattice paths on a Young diagram, and from this we enumerate the paths with a determinantal formula, building upon a formula of Narayana that counts unweighted lattice paths on a Young diagram. Finally, we provide a formula for the enumeration of Catalan tableaux that satisfy a given condition on the rows, which corresponds to the steady state probability that in the TASEP on a lattice with $n$ sites, precisely $k$ of the sites are occupied by particles. This formula is an $α /\ β$ generalization of the Narayana numbers.
Higher order log-monotonicity of combinatorial sequences
A sequence $\{z_n\}_{n\geq0}$ is called ratio log-convex in the sense that the ratio sequence $\{\frac{z_{n+1}}{z_n}\}_{n\geq0}$ is log-convex. Based on a three-term recurrence for sequences, we develop techniques for dealing with the ratio log-convexity of ratio sequences. As applications, we prove that the ratio sequences of numbers, including the derangement numbers, the Motzkin numbers, the Fine numbers, Franel numbers and the Domb numbers are ratio log-convex, respectively. Finally, we not only prove that the sequence of derangement numbers is asymptotically infinitely log-monotonic, but also show some infinite log-monotonicity of some numbers related to the Gamma function, in particular, implying two results of Chen {\it et al.} on the infinite log-monotonicity of the Catalan numbers and the central binomial coefficients.

The Catalan numbers are well-known to be the answer to many different counting problems, and so there are many different families of sets whose cardinalities are the Catalan numbers. We show how such a family can be given the structure of a simplicial set. We show how the low-dimensional parts of this simplicial set classify, in a precise sense, the structures of monoid and of monoidal category. This involves aspects of combinatorics, algebraic topology, quantum groups, logic, and category theory.
