Algebraic and Affine Pattern Avoidance
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, B69c (2013), 40 pp • Search Publication
We investigate various connections between the 0-Hecke monoid, Catalan monoid, and pattern avoidance in permutations, providing new tools for approaching pattern avoidance in an algebraic framework. In particular, we characterize containment of a class of `long' patterns as equivalent to the existence of a corresponding factorization. We then generalize some of our constructions to the affine setting.
Facets of the $m$-generalized cluster complex and regions in the $m$-extended Catalan arrangement of type $A_n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we present a bijection $ω_n$ between two well known families of Catalan objects: the set of facets of the $m$-generalized cluster complex $Δ^m(A_n)$ and the set of dominant regions in the $m$-Catalan arrangement ${\rm Cat}^m(A_n)$, where $m\in\mathbb{N}_{>0}$. In particular, $ω_n$ bijects the facets containing the negative simple root $-α$ to dominant regions having the hyperplane $\{v\in V\mid<v,α>=m\}$ as separating wall. As a result, $ω_n$ restricts to a bijection between the set of facets of the positive part of $Δ^m(A_n)$ and the set of bounded dominant regions in ${\rm Cat}^m(A_n)$. The map $ω_n$ is a composition of two bijections in which integer partitions in an $m$-staircase shape come into play.

Some divisibility properties of binomial and q-binomial coefficients
Published in J. Number Theory 135 (2014), 167-184 • View PublicationBIB
We first prove that if $a$ has a prime factor not dividing $b$ then there are infinitely many positive integers $n$ such that $\binom {an+bn} {an}$ is not divisible by $bn+1$. This confirms a recent conjecture of Z.-W. Sun. Moreover, we provide some new divisibility properties of binomial coefficients: for example, we prove that $\binom {12n} {3n}$ and $\binom {12n} {4n}$ are divisible by $6n-1$, and that $\binom {330n} {88n}$ is divisible by $66n-1$, for all positive integers $n$. As we show, the latter results are in fact consequences of divisibility and positivity results for quotients of $q$-binomial coefficients by $q$-integers, generalizing the positivity of $q$-Catalan numbers. We also put forward several related conjectures.

A Counting Function
We define a counting function that is related to the binomial coefficients. An explicit formula for this function is proved. In some particular cases, simpler explicit formuls are derived. We also derive a formula for the number of (0,1)-matrices, having a fixed number of 1's, and having no zero rows and zero columns. Further, we show that our function satisfies several recurrence relations. The relationship of our counting function with different classes of integers is then examined. These classes include: different kind of figurate numbers, the number of points on the surface of a square pyramid, the magic constants, the truncated square numbers, the coefficients of the Chebyshev polynomials, the Catalan numbers, the Dellanoy numbers, the Sulanke numbers, the numbers of the coordination sequences, and the number of the crystal ball sequences of a cubic lattice. In the last part of the paper, we prove that several configurations are counted by our function. Some of these are: the number of spanning subgraphs of the complete bipartite graph, the number of square containing in a square, the number of coloring's of points on a line, the number of divisors of some particular numbers, the number of all parts in the compositions of an integer, the numbers of the weak compositions of integers, and the number of particular lattice paths. We conclude by counting the number of possible moves of the rook, bishop, and queen on a chessboard. The most statements in the paper are provided by bijective proofs in terms of insets, which are defined in the paper. With this we want to show that different configurations may be counted by the same method.

On root posets for noncrystallographic root systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discuss properties of root posets for finite crystallographic root systems, and show that these properties uniquely determine root posets for the noncrystallographic dihedral types and type $H_3$, while proving that there does not exist a poset satisfying all of the properties in type $H_4$. We do this by exhaustive computer searches for posets having these properties. We further give a realization of the poset of type $H_3$ as restricted roots of type $D_6$, and conjecture a Hilbert polynomial for the $q,t$-Catalan numbers for type $H_4$.
Recursive bijections for Catalan objects
In this note we introduce several instructive examples of bijections found between several different combinatorially defined sequences of sets. Each sequence has cardinalities given by the Catalan numbers. Our results answer some questions posed by R. Stanley in the addendum to his textbook. We actually discuss two types of bijection, one defined recursively and the other defined in a more local, relative, fashion. It is interesting to compare the results of the two.

The Encoding of Natural Numbers as Nested Parentheses Strings with Associated Probability Distributions
We provide an efficient encoding of the natural numbers {0,1,2,3,...} as strings of nested parentheses {(),(()),(()()),((())),...}, or considered inversely, an efficient enumeration of such strings. The technique is based on the recursive definition of the Catalan numbers. The probability distributions arising from this encoding are explored. Applications of this encoding to prefix-free data encoding and recursive function theory are briefly considered.
The combinatorics of interval-vector polytopes
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 20, no. 3 (2013), P22 • View PublicationBIB
An \emph{interval vector} is a $(0,1)$-vector in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for which all the 1's appear consecutively, and an \emph{interval-vector polytope} is the convex hull of a set of interval vectors in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We study three particular classes of interval vector polytopes which exhibit interesting geometric-combinatorial structures; e.g., one class has volumes equal to the Catalan numbers, whereas another class has face numbers given by the Pascal 3-triangle.

Combinatorics of certain higher $q,t$-Catalan polynomials: chains, joint symmetry, and the Garsia-Haiman formula
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics 39 (2014), no. 4, 749--781 • View PublicationBIB
The higher $q,t$-Catalan polynomial $C^{(m)}_n(q,t)$ can be defined combinatorially as a weighted sum of lattice paths contained in certain triangles, or algebraically as a complicated sum of rational functions indexed by partitions of $n$. This paper proves the equivalence of the two definitions for all $m\geq 1$ and all $n\leq 4$. We also give a bijective proof of the joint symmetry property $C^{(m)}_n(q,t)=C^{(m)}_n(t,q)$ for all $m\geq 1$ and all $n\leq 4$. The proof is based on a general approach for proving joint symmetry that dissects a collection of objects into chains, and then passes from a joint symmetry property of initial points and terminal points to joint symmetry of the full set of objects. Further consequences include unimodality results and specific formulas for the coefficients in $C^{(m)}_n(q,t)$ for all $m\geq 1$ and all $n\leq 4$. We give analogous results for certain rational-slope $q,t$-Catalan polynomials.

Cyclic sieving phenomenon on annular noncrossing permutations
We show an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon on annular noncrossing permutations with given cycle types. We define annular $q$-Kreweras numbers, annular $q$-Narayana numbers, and annular $q$-Catalan number, all of which are polynomials in $q$. We then show that these polynomials exhibit the cyclic sieving phenomenon on annular noncrossing permutations. We also show that a sum of annular $q$-Kreweras numbers becomes an annular $q$-Narayana number and a sum of $q$-Narayana numbers becomes an annular $q$-Catalan number.

A new graph invariant arises in toric topology
Published in J. Math. Soc. Japan, 67(2) (2015), 699-720 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce new combinatorial invariants of any finite simple graph, which arise in toric topology. We compute the $i$-th (rational) Betti number and Euler characteristic of the real toric variety associated to a graph associahedron $P_{\B(G)}$. They can be calculated by a purely combinatorial method (in terms of graphs) and are named $a_i(G)$ and $b(G)$, respectively. To our surprise, for specific families of the graph $G$, our invariants are deeply related to well-known combinatorial sequences such as the Catalan numbers and Euler zigzag numbers.

The central component of a triangulation
The central component of a polygon triangulation is defined as the triangle or diameter that contain its geometric center. More generally, every polygon dissection contains a central component. Using this notion, we derive new recurrences for the Catalan and $k$-Catalan numbers, and use these recursions to prove congruence relations of these numbers. We also enumerate the triangulations that contain a fixed vertex in their central components.

Harmonic numbers, Catalan's triangle and mesh patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
The notion of a mesh pattern was introduced recently, but it has already proved to be a useful tool for description purposes related to sets of permutations. In this paper we study eight mesh patterns of small lengths. In particular, we link avoidance of one of the patterns to the harmonic numbers, while for three other patterns we show their distributions on 132-avoiding permutations are given by the Catalan triangle. Also, we show that two specific mesh patterns are Wilf-equivalent. As a byproduct of our studies, we define a new set of sequences counted by the Catalan numbers and provide a relation on the Catalan triangle that seems to be new.

Duplicial algebras and Lagrange inversion
Published in in Algebraic Combinatorics, Resurgence, Moulds and Applcations (CARMA), Vol. 1, ISBN 978-3-03719-204-7, European Math. Soc., 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We provide operadic interpretations for two Hopf subalgebras of the algebra of parking functions. The Catalan subalgebra is identified with the free duplicial algebra on one generator, and the Schröder subalgebra is interpreted by means of a new operad, which we call triduplicial. The noncommutative Lagrange inversion formula is then interpreted in terms of duplicial structures. The generic solution of the noncommutative inversion problem appears as the formal sum of all parking functions. This suggests that combinatorial generating functions derived by functional inversion should be obtainable by evaluating a suitable character on this generic solution. This idea is illustrated by means of the Narayana polynomials, of which we obtain bivariate "super-analogues" by lifting to parking functions a classical character of the algebra of symmetric functions. Other characters, such as evaluation of symmetric functions on a binomial element, are also discussed.

Cyclic Sieving of Increasing Tableaux and small Schröder Paths
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 125 (2014), 357-378 • View PublicationBIB
An increasing tableau is a semistandard tableau with strictly increasing rows and columns. It is well known that the Catalan numbers enumerate both rectangular standard Young tableaux of two rows and also Dyck paths. We generalize this to a bijection between rectangular 2-row increasing tableaux and small Schröder paths. We demonstrate relations between the jeu de taquin for increasing tableaux developed by H. Thomas and A. Yong and the combinatorics of tropical frieze patterns. We then use this jeu de taquin to present new instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon of V. Reiner, D. Stanton, and D. White, generalizing results of D. White and of J. Stembridge.
Proof of Lassalle's Positivity Conjecture on Schur Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the study of Zeilberger's conjecture on an integer sequence related to the Catalan numbers, Lassalle proposed the following conjecture. Let $(t)_n$ denote the rising factorial, and let $Λ_{\mathbb{R}}$ denote the algebra of symmetric functions with real coefficients. If $\varphi$ is the homomorphism from $Λ_{\mathbb{R}}$ to $\mathbb{R}$ defined by $\varphi(h_n)={1}/{((t)_nn!)}$ for some $t>0$, then for any Schur function $s_λ$, the value $\varphi(s_λ)$ is positive. In this paper, we provide an affirmative answer to Lassalle's conjecture by using the Laguerre-Pólya-Schur theory of multiplier sequences.

Flow polytopes of signed graphs and the Kostant partition function
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not. 3 (2015) 830-871 • View PublicationBIB
We establish the relationship between volumes of flow polytopes associated to signed graphs and the Kostant partition function. A special case of this relationship, namely, when the graphs are signless, has been studied in detail by Baldoni and Vergne using techniques of residues. In contrast with their approach, we provide entirely combinatorial proofs inspired by the work of Postnikov and Stanley on flow polytopes. As a fascinating special family of flow polytopes, we study the Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytopes. Motivated by the beautiful volume formula $\prod_{k=1}^{n-2} Cat(k)$ for the type $A_n$ version, where $Cat(k)$ is the $k$th Catalan number, we introduce type $C_{n+1}$ and $D_{n+1}$ Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytopes along with intriguing conjectures pertaining to their properties.
The Reciprocal of $\sum_{n\geq 0}a^nb^n$ for non-commuting $a$ and $b$, Catalan numbers and non-commutative quadratic equations
Published • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this paper is to describe the inversion of the sum $\sum_{n\geq 0}a^nb^n$ where $a$ and $b$ are non-commuting variables as a formal series in $a$ and $b$. We show that the inversion satisfies a non-commutative quadratic equation and that the number of certain monomials in its homogeneous components equals to a Catalan number. We also study general solutions of similar quadratic equations.
