Some nice Hankel determinants
I study Hankel determinants of a class of sequences which can be interpreted as generalizations of the Catalan numbers and the central binomial coefficients. They follow a modular pattern with a frequent appearance of zeroes, so that the theory of orthogonal polynomials is not applicable. Even so our theorems and conjectures show some similarity with the relations between Catalan numbers and Fibonacci polynomials or between central binomial coefficients and Lucas polynomials.

We give a new proof of the $k$-fold convolution of the Catalan numbers. This is done by enumerating a certain class of polygonal dissections called $k$-in-$n$ dissections. Furthermore, we give a formula for the average number of cycles in a triangulation.
Redundant generating functions in lattice path enumeration
A redundant generating function is a generating function having terms which are not part of the solution of the original problem. We use redundant generating functions to study two path problems. In the first application we explain a surprising occurrence of Catalan numbers in counting paths that stay below the line y = 2x. In the second application we prove a conjecture of Niederhausen and Sullivan.

We present a method to obtain congruences modulo powers of 2 for sequences given by recurrences of finite depth with polynomial coefficients. We apply this method to Catalan numbers, Fuß-Catalan numbers, and to subgroup counting functions associated with Hecke groups and their lifts. This leads to numerous new results, including many extensions of known results to higher powers of 2.
Catalan Tree & Parity of some sequences which are related to Catalan numbers
In this paper we determine the parity of some sequences which are related to Catalan numbers. Also we introduce a combinatorical object called, \Catalan tree", and discuss its properties.
Motzkin Algebras

We introduce an associative algebra $\M_k(x)$ whose dimension is the $2k$-th Motzkin number. The algebra $\M_k(x)$ has a basis of "Motzkin diagrams," which are analogous to Brauer and Temperley-Lieb diagrams, and it contains the Temperley-Lieb algebra $\TL_k(x)$ as a subalgebra. We prove that for a particular value of $x$, the algebra $\M_k(x)$ is the centralizer algebra of $\uqsl$ acting on the $k$-fold tensor power of the sum of the 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional irreducible $\uqsl$-modules. We show that $\M_k(x)$ is generated by special diagrams $\ell_i, t_i, r_i \ (1 \le i < k)$ and $p_j \ (1 \le j \le k)$, and that it has a factorization into three subalgebras $\M_k(x) = \RP_k \TL_k(x)\, \LP_k$, all of which have dimensions given by Catalan numbers. We define an action of $\M_k(x)$ on Motzkin paths of rank $r$, and in this way, construct a set of indecomposable modules $\C_k^{(r)}$, $0 \le r \le k$. We prove that $\M_k(x)$ is cellular in the sense of Graham and Lehrer and that the $\C_k^{(r)}$ are the left cell representations. We compute the determinant of the Gram matrix of a bilinear form on $\C_k^{(r)}$ for each $r$ and use these determinants to show that $\M_k(x)$ is semisimple exactly when $x$ is not the root of certain Chebyshev polynomials.

In this paper we define and study what we call the double Catalan monoid. This monoid is the image of a natural map from the 0-Hecke monoid to the monoid of binary relations. We show that the double Catalan monoid provides an algebraization of the (combinatorial) set of 4321-avoiding permutations and relate its combinatorics to various off-shoots of both the combinatorics of Catalan numbers and the combinatorics of permutations. In particular, we give an algebraic interpretation of the first derivative of the Kreweras involution on Dyck paths, of 4321-avoiding involutions and of recent results of Barnabei {\em et al.} on admissible pairs of Dyck paths. We compute a presentation and determine the minimal dimension of an effective representation for the double Catalan monoid. We also determine the minimal dimension of an effective representation for the 0-Hecke monoid.
Oscillating Rim Hook Tableaux and Colored Matchings

Motivated by the question of finding a type B analogue of the bijection between oscillating tableaux and matchings, we find a correspondence between oscillating m-rim hook tableaux and m-colored matchings, where m is a positive integer. An oscillating m-rim hook tableau is defined as a sequence $(λ^0,λ^1,...,λ^{2n})$ of Young diagrams starting with the empty shape and ending with the empty shape such that $λ^{i}$ is obtained from $λ^{i-1}$ by adding an m-rim hook or by deleting an m-rim hook. Our bijection relies on the generalized Schensted algorithm due to White. An oscillating 2-rim hook tableau is also called an oscillating domino tableau. When we restrict our attention to two column oscillating domino tableaux of length 2n, we are led to a bijection between such tableaux and noncrossing 2-colored matchings on $\{1, 2,..., 2n\}$, which are counted by the product $C_nC_{n+1}$ of two consecutive Catalan numbers. A 2-colored matching is noncrossing if there are no two arcs of the same color that are intersecting. We show that oscillating domino tableaux with at most two columns are in one-to-one correspondence with Dyck path packings. A Dyck path packing of length 2n is a pair (D, E), where D is a Dyck path of length 2n, and E is a dispersed Dyck path of length 2n that is weakly covered by D. So we deduce that Dyck path packings of length 2n are counted by $C_nC_{n+1}$.

J. Piontkowski described the homology of the Jacobi factor of a plane curve singularity with one Puiseux pair. We discuss the combinatorial structure of his answer, in particular, relate it to the bigraded deformation of Catalan numbers introduced by A. Garsia and M. Haiman.
Asymptotic Enumeration of Non-crossing Partitions on Surfaces
We generalize the notion of non-crossing partition on a disk to general surfaces with boundary. For this, we consider a surface $Σ$ and introduce the number $C_Σ(n)$ of non-crossing partitions of a set of $n$ points laying on the boundary of $Σ$. Our proofs use bijective techniques arising from map enumeration, joint with the symbolic method and singularity analysis on generating functions. An outcome of our results is that the exponential growth of $C_Σ(n)$ is the same as the one of the $n$-th Catalan number, i.e., does not change when we move from the case where $Σ$ is a disk to general surfaces with boundary.
Riordan arrays and applications via the classical umbral calculus
We use the classical umbral calculus to describe Riordan arrays. Here, a Riordan array is generated by a pair of umbrae, and this provides efficient proofs of several basic results of the theory such as the multiplication rule, the recursive properties, the fundamental theorem and the connection with Sheffer sequences. In particular, we show that the fundamental theorem turns out to be a reformulation of the umbral Abel identity. As an application, we give an elementary approach to the problem of extending integer powers of Riordan arrays to complex powers in such a way that additivity of the exponents is preserved. Also, ordinary Riordan arrays are studied within the classical umbral perspective and some combinatorial identities are discussed regarding Catalan numbers, Fibonacci numbers and Chebyshev polynomials.
A new approach to nonrepetitive sequences

A sequence is nonrepetitive if it does not contain two adjacent identical blocks. The remarkable construction of Thue asserts that 3 symbols are enough to build an arbitrarily long nonrepetitive sequence. It is still not settled whether the following extension holds: for every sequence of 3-element sets $L_1,..., L_n$ there exists a nonrepetitive sequence $s_1, ..., s_n$ with $s_i\in L_i$. Applying the probabilistic method one can prove that this is true for sufficiently large sets $L_i$. We present an elementary proof that sets of size 4 suffice (confirming the best known bound). The argument is a simple counting with Catalan numbers involved. Our approach is inspired by a new algorithmic proof of the Lovász Local Lemma due to Moser and Tardos and its interpretations by Fortnow and Tao. The presented method has further applications to nonrepetitive games and nonrepetitive colorings of graphs.
List of conjectural series for powers of $π$ and other constants
The author gives the full list of his conjectures on series for powers of $π$ and other important constants scattered in some of his public papers or his private diaries. The list contains 234 reasonable conjectural series. On the list there are 178 reasonable series for $π^{-1}$, four series for $π^2$, two series for $π^{-2}$, four series for $π^4$, two series for $π^5$, three series for $π^6$, seven series for $ζ(3)$, one series for $πζ(3)$, two series for $π^2ζ(3)$, one series for $ζ(3)^2$, three series involving both $ζ(3)^2$ and $π^6$, one series for $ζ(5)$, three series involving both $ζ(5)$ and $ζ(2)ζ(3)$, two series involving both $πζ(5)$ and $π^3ζ(3)$, three series involving $ζ(7)$, three series for $K=L(2,(\frac{\cdot}{3}))$, one series for the Catalan constant $G$, two series for $πG$, one series involving both $π^3G$ and $π^2ζ(3)$, two series for $πK$, two series involving $L=L(4,(\frac{\cdot}3))$, three series involving $β(4)=L(4,(\frac{-4}{\cdot}))$, and four series for $π^2\log a$ with $a=2,3,(\sqrt5+1)/2$. The code of a conjectural series is underlined if and only if a complete proof of the identity is available.
Mahonian Pairs

We introduce the notion of a Mahonian pair. Consider the set, P^*, of all words having the positive integers as alphabet. Given finite subsets S,T of P^*, we say that (S,T) is a Mahonian pair if the distribution of the major index, maj, over S is the same as the distribution of the inversion number, inv, over T. So the well-known fact that maj and inv are equidistributed over the symmetric group, S_n, can be expressed by saying that (S_n,S_n) is a Mahonian pair. We investigate various Mahonian pairs (S,T) with S different from T. Our principal tool is Foata's fundamental bijection f: P^* -> P^* since it has the property that maj w = inv f(w) for any word w. We consider various families of words associated with Catalan and Fibonacci numbers. We show that, when restricted to words in {1,2}^*, f transforms familiar statistics on words into natural statistics on integer partitions such as the size of the Durfee square. The Rogers-Ramanujan identities, the Catalan triangle, and various q-analogues also make an appearance. We generalize the definition of Mahonian pairs to infinite sets and use this as a tool to connect a partition bijection of Corteel-Savage-Venkatraman with the Greene-Kleitman decomposition of a Boolean algebra into symmetric chains. We close with comments about future work and open problems.

We refine Catalan numbers and Fuß-Catalan numbers by introducing colour statistics for triangulations of polygons and $d$-dimensional generalisations there-of which we call Fuß-Catalan complexes. Our refinements consist in showing that the number of triangulations, respectively Fuß-Catalan complexes, with a given colour distribution of its vertices is given by closed product formulae. The crucial ingredient in the proof is the Lagrange-Good inversion formula.
Generalized compositions with a fixed number of parts
We investigate compositions of a positive integer with a fixed number of parts, when there are several types of each natural number. These compositions produce new relationships among binomial coefficients, Catalan numbers, and numbers of the Catalan triangle.
Generalized Compositions of Natural Numbers
We consider compositions of natural numbers when there are different types of each natural number. Several recursions as well as some closed formulas for the number of compositions is derived. We also find its relationships with some known classes of integers such as Fibonacci, Catalan, Pell, Pell-Lucas, and Jacobsthal numbers.

We study the properties of the odd Catalan numbers, C_n, modulo 2^k for k >= 2. We show that there exist only k - 1 different congruences of the odd Catalan numbers modulo 2^k. Moreover, these congruences can be obtained by C_{2^m - 1} (mod 2^k) for m = 1, 2, ..., k - 1.
Representations of the Temperley-Lieb Algebra via a New Inner Product on Half-Diagrams
We describe an inner product on the diagrams on which the Temperley-Lieb algebra can be represented. We exhibit several constructions which are in natural combinatorial bijection with these diagrams, which are generalizations of various constructions counted by the Catalan numbers. We use a method similar to the existing ones for orthogonalizing the Temperley-Lieb algebra to construct an orthogonal basis for the vector space over these diagrams.
