In this paper we give a formula for the classes (in the Grothendieck ring of complex quasi-projective varieties) of irreducible components of $(1,k)$-quasi-homogeneous Hilbert schemes of points on the plane. We find a new simple geometric interpretation of the $q,t$-Catalan numbers. Finally, we investigate a connection between $(1,k)$-quasi-homogeneous Hilbert schemes and homogeneous nested Hilbert schemes.
Lattice Polynomials, 12312-Avoiding Partial Matchings and Even Trees
The lattice polynomials $L_{i,j}(x)$ are introduced by Hough and Shapiro as a weighted count of certain lattice paths from the origin to the point $(i,j)$. In particular, $L_{2n, n}(x)$ reduces to the generating function of the numbers $T_{n,k}={1\over n}{n-1+k\choose n-1}{2n-k\choose n+1}$, which can be viewed as a refinement of the $3$-Catalan numbers $T_n=\frac{1}{2n+1}{3n\choose n}$. In this paper, we establish a correspondence between $12312$-avoiding partial matchings and lattice paths, and we show that the weighted count of such partial matchings with respect to the number of crossings in a more general sense coincides with the lattice polynomials $L_{i,j}(x)$. We also introduce a statistic on even trees, called the $r$-index, and show that the number of even trees with $2n$ edges and with $r$-index $k$ equal to $T_{n,k}$.

Bouvel and Pergola introduced the notion of minimal permutations in the study of the whole genome duplication-random loss model for genome rearrangements. Let $\mathcal{F}_d(n)$ denote the set of minimal permutations of length $n$ with $d$ descents, and let $f_d(n)= |\mathcal{F}_d(n)|$. They derived that $f_{n-2}(n)=2^{n}-(n-1)n-2$ and $f_n(2n)=C_n$, where $C_n$ is the $n$-th Catalan number. Mansour and Yan proved that $f_{n+1}(2n+1)=2^{n-2}nC_{n+1}$. In this paper, we consider the problem of counting minimal permutations in $\mathcal{F}_d(n)$ with a prescribed set of ascents. We show that such structures are in one-to-one correspondence with a class of skew Young tableaux, which we call $2$-regular skew tableaux. Using the determinantal formula for the number of skew Young tableaux of a given shape, we find an explicit formula for $f_{n-3}(n)$. Furthermore, by using the Knuth equivalence, we give a combinatorial interpretation of a formula for a refinement of the number $f_{n+1}(2n+1)$.
Linear chord diagrams on two intervals
Consider all possible ways of attaching disjoint chords to two ordered and oriented disjoint intervals so as to produce a connected graph. Taking the intervals to lie in the real axis with the induced orientation and the chords to lie in the upper half plane canonically determines a corresponding fatgraph which has some associated genus $g\geq 0$, and we consider the natural generating function ${\bf C}_g^{[2]}(z)=\sum_{n\geq 0} {\bf c}^{[2]}_g(n)z^n$ for the number ${\bf c}^{[2]}_g(n)$ of distinct such chord diagrams of fixed genus $g\geq 0$ with a given number $n\geq 0$ of chords. We prove here the surprising fact that ${\bf C}^{[2]}_g(z)=z^{2g+1} R_g^{[2]}(z)/(1-4z)^{3g+2} $ is a rational function, for $g\geq 0$, where the polynomial $R^{[2]}_g(z)$ with degree at most $g$ has integer coefficients and satisfies $R_g^{[2]}({1\over 4})\neq 0$. Earlier work had already determined that the analogous generating function ${\bf C}_g(z)=z^{2g}R_g(z)/(1-4z)^{3g-{1\over 2}}$ for chords attached to a single interval is algebraic, for $g\geq 1$, where the polynomial $R_g(z)$ with degree at most $g-1$ has integer coefficients and satisfies $R_g(1/4)\neq 0$ in analogy to the generating function ${\bf C}_0(z)$ for the Catalan numbers. The new results here on ${\bf C}_g^{[2]}(z)$ rely on this earlier work, and indeed, we find that $R_g^{[2]}(z)=R_{g+1}(z) -z\sum_{g_1=1}^g R_{g_1}(z) R_{g+1-g_1}(z)$, for $g\geq 1$.
Enumeration of linear chord diagrams
A linear chord diagram canonically determines a fatgraph and hence has an associated genus $g$. We compute the natural generating function ${\bf C}_g(z)=\sum_{n\geq 0} {\bf c}_g(n)z^n$ for the number ${\bf c}_g(n)$ of linear chord diagrams of fixed genus $g\geq 1$ with a given number $n\geq 0$ of chords and find the remarkably simple formula ${\bf C}_g(z)=z^{2g}R_g(z) (1-4z)^{{1\over 2}-3g}$, where $R_g(z)$ is a polynomial of degree at most $g-1$ with integral coefficients satisfying $R_g({1\over 4})\neq 0$ and $R_g(0) = {\bf c}_g(2g)\neq 0.$ In particular, ${\bf C}_g(z)$ is algebraic over $\mathbb C(z)$, which generalizes the corresponding classical fact for the generating function ${\bf C}_0(z)$ of the Catalan numbers. As a corollary, we also calculate a related generating function germaine to the enumeration of knotted RNA secondary structures, which is again found to be algebraic.

We prove the following conjecture of Zeilberger. Denoting by $C_n$ the Catalan number, define inductively $A_n$ by $(-1)^{n-1}A_n=C_n+\sum_{j=1}^{n-1} (-1)^{j} \binom{2n-1}{2j-1} A_j \,C_{n-j}$ and $a_n=2A_n/C_n$. Then $a_n$ (hence $A_n$) is a positive integer.

In this paper we shall survey the various methods of evaluating Hankel determinants and as an illustration we evaluate some Hankel determinants of a q-analogue of Catalan numbers. Here we consider $\frac{(aq;q)_{n}}{(abq^{2};q)_{n}}$ as a q-analogue of Catalan numbers $C_{n}=\frac1{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}$, which is known as the moments of the little q-Jacobi polynomials. We also give several proofs of this q-analogue, in which we use lattice paths, the orthogonal polynomials, or the basic hypergeometric series. We also consider a q-analogue of Schröder Hankel determinants, and give a new proof of Moztkin Hankel determinants using an addition formula for ${}_2F_{1}$.
The Shi arrangement and the Ish arrangement

This paper is about two arrangements of hyperplanes. The first --- the Shi arrangement --- was introduced by Jian-Yi Shi to describe the Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in the affine Weyl group of type $A$. The second --- the Ish arrangement --- was recently defined by the first author who used the two arrangements together to give a new interpretation of the $q,t$-Catalan numbers of Garsia and Haiman. In the present paper we will define a mysterious "combinatorial symmetry" between the two arrangements and show that this symmetry preserves a great deal of information. For example, the Shi and Ish arrangements share the same characteristic polynomial, the same numbers of regions, bounded regions, dominant regions, regions with $c$ "ceilings" and $d$ "degrees of freedom", etc. Moreover, all of these results hold in the greater generality of "deleted" Shi and Ish arrangements corresponding to an arbitrary subgraph of the complete graph. Our proofs are based on nice combinatorial labelings of Shi and Ish regions and a new set partition-valued statistic on these regions.
A compositional shuffle conjecture specifying touch points of the Dyck path

We introduce a $q,t$-enumeration of Dyck paths which are forced to touch the main diagonal at specific points and forbidden to touch elsewhere and conjecture that it describes the action of the Macdonald theory $\nabla$ operator applied to a Hall-Littlewood polynomial. Our conjecture refines several earlier conjectures concerning the space of diagonal harmonics including the "shuffle conjecture" (Duke J. Math. $\mathbf {126}$ (2005), pp. 195-232) for $\nabla e_n[X]$. We bring to light that certain generalized Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by compositions are the building blocks for the algebraic combinatorial theory of $q,t$-Catalan sequences and we prove a number of identities involving these functions.

We explain how the moments of the (weight function of the) Askey Wilson polynomials are related to the enumeration of the staircase tableaux introduced by the first and fourth authors. This gives us a direct combinatorial formula for these moments. Then we use techniques developed by Ismail and the third author to give explicit formulae for these moments and for the enumeration of staircase tableaux. Finally we study the enumeration of staircase tableaux at various specializations of the parameterizations; for example, we obtain the Catalan numbers, Fibonacci numbers, Eulerian numbers, the number of permutations, and the number of matchings.
Enumerating Combinatorial Classes of the Complex Polynomial Vector Fields in the Complex Plane

In order to understand the parameter space of monic and centered complex polynomial vector fields of degree d in the complex plane, decomposed by the combinatorial classes of the vector fields, it is interesting to know the number of loci in parameter space consisting of vector fields with the same combinatorial data (corresponding to topological classification with fixed separatrices at infinity).
This paper answers questions posed by Adam L. Epstein and Tan Lei about the total number of combinatorial classes and the number of combinatorial classes corresponding to loci of a specific (real) dimension q in parameter space, for fixed degree d. These results are extensions of a result by Douady, Estrada, and Sentenac, which shows that the number of combinatorial classes of the structurally stable complex polynomial vector fields of degree d in the complex plane is the Catalan number C(d-1). We show that enumerating the combinatorial classes is equivalent to a so-called bracketing problem. Then we analyze the generating functions and find closed-form expressions for the number of classes, as functions of d and q, and we furthermore make an asymptotic analysis of these sequences for d tending to infinity.
These results are also applicable to special classes of Abelian differentials, quadratic differentials with double poles, and singular holomorphic foliations of the plane.

Using the notion of series parallel interval order, we propose a unified setting to describe Dyck lattices and Tamari lattices (two well known lattice structures on Catalan objects) in terms of basic notions of the theory of posets. As a consequence of our approach, we find an extremely simple proof of the fact that the Dyck order is a refinement of the Tamari one. Moreover, we provide a description of both the weak and the strong Bruhat order on 312-avoiding permutations, by recovering the proof of the fact that they are isomorphic to the Tamari and the Dyck order, respectively; our proof, which simplifies the existing ones, relies on our results on series parallel interval orders.
Perimeter Variance of Uniform Random Triangles
Let T be a random triangle in a disk D of radius R (meaning that vertices are independent and uniform in D). We determine the bivariate density for two arbitrary sides a,b of T. In particular, we compute that E(a*b)=(0.837...)*R^2, which implies that Var(perimeter)=(0.649...)*R^2. No closed-form expression for either coefficient is known. The Catalan numbers also arise here.

In "Square partitions and Catalan numbers" (arXiv0912.4983), Bennett et al. presented a recursive algorithm to create a family of partitions from one or several partitions. They were mainly interested in the cases when we begin with a single square partition or with several partitions with only one part. The cardinalities of those families of partitions are the Catalan and ballot numbers, respectively. In this paper we present a closed description for those families. We also present bijections between those sets of partitions and sets of trees and forests enumerated by the Catalan an ballot numbers.
A new combinatorial identity for unicellular maps, via a direct bijective approach

A unicellular map, or one-face map, is a graph embedded in an orientable surface such that its complement is a topological disk. In this paper, we give a new viewpoint to the structure of these objects, by describing a decomposition of any unicellular map into a unicellular map of smaller genus. This gives a new combinatorial identity for the number $ε_g(n)$ of unicellular maps of size $n$ and genus $g$. Contrarily to the Harer-Zagier recurrence formula, this identity is recursive in only one parameter (the genus). Iterating the construction gives an explicit bijection between unicellular maps and plane trees with distinguished vertices, which gives a combinatorial explanation (and proof) of the fact that $ε_g(n)$ is the product of the $n$-th Catalan number by a polynomial in $n$. The combinatorial interpretation also gives a new and simple formula for this polynomial. Variants of the problem are considered, like bipartite unicellular maps, or unicellular maps with cubic vertices only.
Borel generators

We use the notion of Borel generators to give alternative methods for computing standard invariants, such as associated primes, Hilbert series, and Betti numbers, of Borel ideals. Because there are generally few Borel generators relative to ordinary generators, this enables one to do manual computations much more easily. Moreover, this perspective allows us to find new connections to combinatorics involving Catalan numbers and their generalizations. We conclude with a surprising result relating the Betti numbers of certain principal Borel ideals to the number of pointed pseudo-triangulations of particular planar point sets.
Control of cancellations that restrain the growth of a binomial recursion

We study a recursion that generates real sequences depending on a parameter $x$. Given a negative $x$ the growth of the sequence is very difficult to estimate due to canceling terms. We reduce the study of the recursion to a problem about a family of integral operators, and prove that for every parameter value except -1, the growth of the sequence is factorial. In the combinatorial part of the proof we show that when $x=-1$ the resulting recurrence yields the sequence of alternating Catalan numbers, and thus has exponential growth. We expect our methods to be useful in a variety of similar situations.

Operators on probability distributions can be expressed as operators on the associated moment sequences, and so correspond to operators on integer sequences. Thus, there is an opportunity to apply each theory to the other. Moreover, probability models can be sources of integer sequences, both classical and new, as we show by considering the classical M/G/1 single-server queueing model. We identify moment sequences that are integer sequences. We establish connections between the M/M/1 busy period distribution and the Catalan and Schroeder numbers.
On Kiselman quotients of 0-Hecke monoids

Combining the definition of 0-Hecke monoids with that of Kiselman semigroups, we define what we call Kiselman quotients of 0-Hecke monoids associated with simply laced Dynkin diagrams. We classify these monoids up to isomorphism, determine their idempotents and show that they are $\mathcal{J}$-trivial. For type $A$ we show that Catalan numbers appear as the maximal cardinality of our monoids, in which case the corresponding monoid is isomorphic to the monoid of all order-preserving and order-decreasing total transformations on a finite chain. We construct various representations of these monoids by matrices, total transformations and binary relations. Motivated by these results, with a mixed graph we associate a monoid, which we call a Hecke-Kiselman monoid, and classify such monoids up to isomorphism. Both Kiselman semigroups and Kiselman quotients of 0-Hecke monoids are natural examples of Hecke-Kiselman monoids.

Hexaflexagons were popularized by the late Martin Gardner in his first Scientific American column in 1956. Oakley and Wisner showed that they can be represented abstractly by certain recursively defined permutations called pats, and deduced that they are counted by the Catalan numbers. Counting pats by number of descents yields the curious identity Sum[1/(2n-2k+1)binom{2n-2k+1}{k}binom{2k}{n-k},k=0..n] = C(n), where only the middle third of the summands are nonzero.
