Enumeration of connected Catalan objects by type
Published • View PublicationBIB
Noncrossing set partitions, nonnesting set partitions, Dyck paths, and rooted plane trees are four classes of Catalan objects which carry a notion of type. There exists a product formula which enumerates these objects according to type. We define a notion of `connectivity' for these objects and prove an analogous product formula which counts connected objects by type. Our proof of this product formula is combinatorial and bijective. We extend this to a product formula which counts objects with a fixed type and number of connected components. We relate our product formulas to symmetric functions arising from parking functions. We close by presenting an alternative proof of our product formulas communicated to us by Christian Krattenthaler which uses generating functions and Lagrange inversion.

Hyperplane Arrangements and Diagonal Harmonics
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2003, Haglund's {\sf bounce} statistic gave the first combinatorial interpretation of the $q,t$-Catalan numbers and the Hilbert series of diagonal harmonics. In this paper we propose a new combinatorial interpretation in terms of the affine Weyl group of type $A$. In particular, we define two statistics on affine permutations; one in terms of the Shi hyperplane arrangement, and one in terms of a new arrangement - which we call the Ish arrangement. We prove that our statistics are equivalent to the {\sf area'} and {\sf bounce} statistics of Haglund and Loehr. In this setting, we observe that {\sf bounce} is naturally expressed as a statistic on the root lattice. We extend our statistics in two directions: to "extended" Shi arrangements and to the bounded chambers of these arrangements. This leads to a (conjectural) combinatorial interpretation for all integral powers of the Bergeron-Garsia nabla operator applied to the elementary symmetric functions.

On divisibility concerning binomial coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let k and n be positive integers. We mainly show that $$(ln+1) | k\binom{kn+ln}{kn},$$ $$2\binom{kn}n | \binom {2n}{n}C_{2n}^{(k-1)}$$, $$\binom{kn}n | (2k-1)C_n\binom{2kn}{2n},$$ $$\binom{2n}n | (k+1)C_n^{(k-1)}\binom{2kn}{kn},$$ $$2^{k-1}\binom{2n}{n} | \binom{2(2^k-1)n}{(2^k-1)n}C_n^{(2^k-2)},$$ $$(6n+1)\binom{5n}{n} | \binom{3n-1}{n-1}C_{3n}^{(4)},$$ and $$\binom{3n}{n} | \binom{5n-1}{n-1}C_{5n}^{(2)},$$ where C_n denotes the Catalan number $\binom{2n}{n}/(n+1)$, and C_m^{(h)} refers to the Catalan number $\binom{(h+1)m}{m}/(hm+1)$ of order h.

Products and sums divisible by central binomial coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we initiate the study of products and sums divisible by central binomial coefficients. We show that 2(2n+1)binom(2n,n)| binom(6n,3n)binom(3n,n) for every n=1,2,3,... Also, for any nonnegative integers $k$ and $n$ we have $$\binom {2k}k | \binom{4n+2k+2}{2n+k+1}\binom{2n+k+1}{2k}\binom{2n-k+1}n$$ and $$\binom{2k}k | (2n+1)\binom{2n}nC_{n+k}\binom{n+k+1}{2k},$$ where $C_m$ denotes the Catalan number $\binom{2m}m/(m+1)=\binom{2m}m-\binom{2m}{m+1}$. Applying this result we obtain two sums divisible by central binomial coefficients.

A solution to one of Knuth's permutation problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We answer a problem posed recently by Knuth: an n-dimensional box, with edges lying on the positive coordinate axes and generic edge lengths W_1 < W_2 < ... < W_n, is dissected into n! pieces along the planes x_i = x_j. We describe which pieces have the same volume, and show that there are C_n distinct volumes, where C_n denotes the nth Catalan number.

Enumerating (2+2)-free posets by the number of minimal elements and other statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
An unlabeled poset is said to be (2+2)-free if it does not contain an induced subposet that is isomorphic to 2+2, the union of two disjoint 2-element chains. Let $p_n$ denote the number of (2+2)-free posets of size $n$. In a recent paper, Bousquet-Mélou et al.\cite{BCDK} found, using so called ascent sequences, the generating function for the number of (2+2)-free posets of size $n$: $P(t)=\sum_{n \geq 0} p_n t^n = \sum_{n\geq 0} \prod_{i=1}^{n} (1-(1-t)^i)$. We extend this result in two ways. First, we find the generating function for (2+2)-free posets when four statistics are taken into account, one of which is the number of minimal elements in a poset. Second, we show that if $p_{n,k}$ equals the number of (2+2)-free posets of size $n$ with $k$ minimal elements, then $P(t,z)=\sum_{n,k \geq 0} p_{n,k} t^n z^k = 1+ \sum_{n \geq 0} \frac{zt}{(1-zt)^{n+1}} \prod_{i=1}^n (1-(1-t)^i)$. The second result cannot be derived from the first one by a substitution. On the other hand, $P(t)$ can easily be obtained from $P(t,z)$ thus providing an alternative proof for the enumeration result in \cite{BCDK}. Moreover, we conjecture a simpler form of writing $P(t,z)$. Our enumeration results are extended to certain restricted permutations and to regular linearized chord diagrams through bijections in \cite{BCDK,cdk}. Finally, we define a subset of ascent sequences counted by the Catalan numbers and we discuss its relations with (2+2)- and (3+1)-free posets.
Single Polygon Counting for $m$ Fixed Nodes in Cayley Tree: Two Extremal Cases
We denote a polygon as a connected component in Cayley tree of order 2 containing certain number of fix vertices. We found an exact formula for a polygon counting problem for two cases, in which, for the first case the polygon contain a full connected component of a Cayley tree and for the second case the polygon contain two fixed vertices. From these formulas, which is in the form of finite linear combination of Catalan numbers, one can find the asymptotic estimation for a counting problem.

From Parking Functions to Gelfand Pairs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A pair $(G,K)$ of a group and its subgroup is called a Gelfand pair if the induced trivial representation of $K$ on $G$ is multiplicity free. Let $(a_j)$ be a sequence of positive integers of length $n$, and let $(b_i)$ be its non-decreasing rearrangement. The sequence $(a_i)$ is called a parking function of length $n$ if $b_i \leq i$ for all $i=1,\...,n$. In this paper we study certain Gelfand pairs in relation with parking functions. In particular, we find explicit descriptions of the decomposition of the associated induced trivial representations into irreducibles. We obtain and study a new $q$ analogue of the Catalan numbers $\frac{1}{n+1}{2n \choose n}$, $n\geq 1$.
An elementary chromatic reduction for gain graphs and special hyperplane arrangements
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics, 16 (1) (2009), Article R121 • Search Publication
A gain graph is a graph whose edges are labelled invertibly by "gains" from a group. "Switching" is a transformation of gain graphs that generalizes conjugation in a group. A "weak chromatic function" of gain graphs with gains in a fixed group satisfies three laws: deletion-contraction for links with neutral gain, invariance under switching, and nullity on graphs with a neutral loop. The laws lead to the "weak chromatic group" of gain graphs, which is the universal domain for weak chromatic functions. We find expressions, valid in that group, for a gain graph in terms of minors without neutral-gain edges, or with added complete neutral-gain subgraphs, that generalize the expression of an ordinary chromatic polynomial in terms of monomials or falling factorials. These expressions imply relations for chromatic functions of gain graphs. We apply our relations to some special integral gain graphs including those that correspond to the Shi, Linial, and Catalan arrangements, thereby obtaining new evaluations of and new ways to calculate the zero-free chromatic polynomial and the integral and modular chromatic functions of these gain graphs, hence the characteristic polynomials and hypercubical lattice-point counting functions of the arrangements. We also calculate the total chromatic polynomial of any gain graph and especially of the Catalan, Shi, and Linial gain graphs.

Multiple analogues of binomial coefficients and related families of special numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct multiple $qt$-binomial coefficients and related multiple analogues of several celebrated families of special numbers in this paper. These multidimensional generalizations include the first and the second kind of $qt$-Stirling numbers, $qt$-Bell numbers, $qt$-Bernoulli numbers, $qt$-Catalan numbers and the $qt$--Fibonacci numbers. In the course of developing main properties of these extensions, we prove results that are significant in their own rights such as certain probability measures on the set of integer partitions.
Square Partitions and Catalan Numbers
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 34 (2011), no. 1, 1-18 • View PublicationBIB
For each integer $k\ge 1$, we define an algorithm which associates to a partition whose maximal value is at most $k$ a certain subset of all partitions. In the case when we begin with a partition $λ$ which is square, i.e $λ=λ_1\ge...\geλ_k>0$, and $λ_1=k,λ_k=1$, then applying the algorithm $\ell$ times gives rise to a set whose cardinality is either the Catalan number $c_{\ell-k+1}$ (the self dual case) or twice the Catalan number. The algorithm defines a tree and we study the propagation of the tree, which is not in the isomorphism class of the usual Catalan tree. The algorithm can also be modified to produce a two--parameter family of sets and the resulting cardinalities of the sets are the ballot numbers. Finally, we give a conjecture on the rank of a particular module for the ring of symmetric functions in $2\ell+m$ variables.

Caustics, counting maps and semi-classical asymptotics
Published in Nonlinearity, Volume 24, Number 2, February 2011, pp. 481 - 526 • View PublicationBIB
This paper develops a deeper understanding of the structure and combinatorial significance of the partition function for Hermitian random matrices. The coefficients of the large N expansion of the logarithm of this partition function, also known as the genus expansion, (and its derivatives) are generating functions for a variety of graphical enumeration problems. The main results are to prove that these generating functions are in fact specific rational functions of a distinguished irrational (algebraic) function of the generating function parameters. This distinguished function is itself the generating function for the Catalan numbers (or generalized Catalan numbers, depending on the choice of parameter). It is also a solution of the inviscid Burgers equation for certain initial data. The shock formation, or caustic, of the Burgers characteristic solution is directly related to the poles of the rational forms of the generating functions. These results in turn provide new information about the asymptotics of recurrence coefficients for orthogonal polynomials with respect to exponential weights. One gains new insights into the relation between certain derivatives of the genus expansion and the asymptotic expansion of the first Painleve transcendent, related to the double-scaling limit. This work provides a precise expression of the Painleve asymptotic coefficients directly in terms of the coefficients of the partial fractions expansion of the rational form of the generating functions established here. Moreover, these insights point toward a more general program relating the first Painleve hierarchy and the higher order structure of the double-scaling limit to the specific rational structure of generating functions.

Catalan numbers for complex reflection groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct (q,t)-Catalan polynomials and q-Fuss-Catalan polynomials for any irreducible complex reflection group W. The two main ingredients in this construction are Rouquier's formulation of shift functors for the rational Cherednik algebras of W, and Opdam's analysis of permutations of the irreducible representations of W arising from the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov connection.
The product of trees in the Loday-Ronco algebra through Catalan alternative tableaux
The aim of this note is to show how the introduction of certain tableaux, called Catalan alternative tableaux, provides a very simple and elegant description of the product in the Hopf algebra of binary trees defined by Loday and Ronco. Moreover, we use this description to introduce a new associative product on the space of binary trees.

Some determinants of path generating functions

We evaluate four families of determinants of matrices, where the entries are sums or differences of generating functions for paths consisting of up-steps, down-steps and level steps. By specialisation, these determinant evaluations have numerous corollaries. In particular, they cover numerous determinant evaluations of combinatorial numbers - most notably of Catalan, ballot, and of Motzkin numbers - that appeared previously in the literature.

p-adic valuations of some sums of multinomial coefficients
Published in Acta Arith. 148(2011), 63-76 • View PublicationBIB
Let $m$ and $n>0$ be integers. Suppose that $p$ is a prime dividing $m-4$ but not dividing $m$. We show that $ν_p(\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\frac{\binom{2k}k}{m^k})$ and $ν_p(\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\binom{n-1}{k}(-1)^k\frac{\binom{2k}k}{m^k})$ are at least $ν_p(n)$, where $ν_p(x)$ denotes the $p$-adic valuation of $x$. Furthermore, if $p>3$ then $$n^{-1}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\frac{\bi{2k}k}{m^k}=\frac{\binom{2n-1}{n-1}}{4^{n-1}} (mod p^{ν_p(m-4)})$$ and $$n^{-1}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\binom{n-1}{k}(-1)^k\frac{\binom{2k}k}{m^k}=\frac{C_{n-1}}{4^{n-1}} (mod p^{ν_p(m-4)}),$$ where $C_k$ denotes the Catalan number $\binom{2k}{k}/(k+1)$. This implies several conjectures of Guo and Zeng [GZ]. We also raise two conjectures, and prove that $n>1$ is a prime if and only if $$\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}multinomial{(n-1)k}{k,...,k}=0 (mod n),$$ where $multinomial{k_1+...+k_{n-1}}{k_1,...,k_{n-1}}$ denotes the multinomial coefficient $(k_1+...+k_{n-1})!/(k_1!... k_{n-1}!)$.

On a pattern avoidance condition for the wreath product of cyclic groups with symmetric groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we extend to a non-consecutive case, the study of the pattern matching condition on the wreath product of the cyclic group and the symmetric group initiated by the authors in a previous paper. The main focus of our paper is (colored) patterns of length 2, although a number of enumerative results for longer patterns are also presented. A new non-trivial bijective interpretation for the Catalan numbers is found, in terms of simultaneously bi-avoiding two patterns in a wreath product.

New interpretations for noncrossing partitions of classical types

We interpret noncrossing partitions of type $B$ and type $D$ in terms of noncrossing partitions of type $A$. As an application, we get type-preserving bijections between noncrossing and nonnesting partitions of type $B$, type $C$ and type $D$ which are different from those in the recent work of Fink and Giraldo. We also define Catalan tableaux of type $B$ and type $D$, and find bijections between them and noncrossing partitions of type $B$ and type $D$ respectively.

Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $a,m$ be integers with $a>0$ and $m \not\equiv0\pmod p$. In this paper we determine $\sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}\binom{2k}{k+d}/m^k$ mod $p^2$ for $d=0,1$; for example, $$\sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}\frac{\binom{2k}k}{m^k}\equiv\left(\frac{m^2-4m}{p^a}\right)+\left(\frac{m^2-4m}{p^{a-1}}\right)u_{p-(\frac{m^2-4m}{p})}\pmod{p^2},$$ where $(-)$ is the Jacobi symbol, and $\{u_n\}_{n\geqslant0}$ is the Lucas sequence given by $u_0=0$, $u_1=1$ and $u_{n+1}=(m-2)u_n-u_{n-1}$ for $n=1,2,3,\ldots$. As an application, we determine $\sum_{0<k<p^a,\, k\equiv r\pmod{p-1}}C_k$ modulo $p^2$ for any integer $r$, where $C_k$ denotes the Catalan number $\binom{2k}k/(k+1)$. We also pose some related conjectures.

Pattern avoidance and RSK-like algorithms for alternating permutations and Young tableaux
Published in J. Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 118(4): 1436-1450, 2011 • View PublicationBIB
We define a class L_{n, k} of permutations that generalizes alternating (up-down) permutations and give bijective proofs of certain pattern-avoidance results for this class. As a special case of our results, we give two bijections between the set A_{2n}(1234) of alternating permutations of length 2n with no four-term increasing subsequence and standard Young tableaux of shape (3^n), and between the set A_{2n + 1}(1234) and standard Young tableaux of shape (3^{n - 1}, 2, 1). This represents the first enumeration of alternating permutations avoiding a pattern of length four. We also extend previous work on doubly-alternating permutations (alternating permutations whose inverses are alternating) to our more general context. The set L_{n, k} may be viewed as the set of reading words of the standard Young tableaux of a certain skew shape. In the last section of the paper, we expand our study to consider pattern avoidance in the reading words of standard Young tableaux of any skew shape. We show bijectively that the number of standard Young tableaux of shape lambda/mu whose reading words avoid 213 is a natural mu-analogue of the Catalan numbers (and in particular does not depend on lambda, up to a simple technical condition), and that there are similar results for the patterns 132, 231 and 312.
