The Catalan number sequence is one of the most famous number sequences in combinatorics and is well studied in the literature. In this paper we further investigate its fundamental properties related to the moment problem and prove for the first time that it is an infinitely divisible Stieltjes moment sequence in the sense of S.-G. Tyan. Besides, any positive real power of the sequence is still a Stieltjes determinate sequence. Some more cases including (a) the central binomial coefficient sequence (related to the Catalan sequence), (b) a double factorial number sequence and (c) the generalized Catalan (or Fuss-Catalan) sequence are also investigated. Finally, we pose two conjectures including the determinacy equivalence between powers of nonnegative random variables and powers of their moment sequences, which is supported by some existing results.

We extend results regarding a combinatorial model introduced by Black, Drellich, and Tymoczko (2017+) which generalizes the folding of the RNA molecule in biology. Consider a word on alphabet $\{A_1, \overline{A}_1, \ldots, A_m, \overline{A}_m\}$ in which $\overline{A}_i$ is called the complement of $A_i$. A word $w$ is foldable if can be wrapped around a rooted plane tree $T$, starting at the root and working counterclockwise such that one letter labels each half edge and the two letters labeling the same edge are complements. The tree $T$ is called $w$-valid.
We define a bijection between edge-colored plane trees and words folded onto trees. This bijection is used to characterize and enumerate words for which there is only one valid tree. We follow up with a characterization of words for which there exist exactly two valid trees.
In addition, we examine the set $\mathcal{R}(n,m)$ consisting of all integers $k$ for which there exists a word of length $2n$ with exactly $k$ valid trees. Black, Drellich, and Tymoczko showed that for the $n$th Catalan number $C_n$, $\{C_n,C_{n-1}\}\subset \mathcal{R}(n,1)$ but $k\not\in\mathcal{R}(n,1)$ for $C_{n-1}<k<C_n$. We describe a superset of $\mathcal{R}(n,1)$ in terms of the Catalan numbers by which we establish more missing intervals. We also prove $\mathcal{R}(n,1)$ contains all non-negative integer less than $n+1$.

In [The Delta Conjecture, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., to appear] Haglund, Remmel, Wilson introduce a conjecture which gives a combinatorial prediction for the result of applying a certain operator to an elementary symmetric function. This operator, defined in terms of its action on the modified Macdonald basis, has played a role in work of Garsia and Haiman on diagonal harmonics, the Hilbert scheme, and Macdonald polynomials [A. M. Garsia and M. Haiman. A remarkable $q,t$-Catalan sequence and $q$-Lagrange inversion, J. Algebraic Combin. 5 (1996), 191--244], [M. Haiman, Vanishing theorems and character formulas for the Hilbert scheme of points in the plane, Invent. Math. 149 (2002), 371-407]. The Delta Conjecture involves two parameters $q,t$; in this article we give the first proof that the Delta Conjecture is true when $q=0$ or $t=0$.

Cyclic sieving is a well-known phenomenon where certain interesting polynomials, especially $q$-analogues, have useful interpretations related to actions and representations of the cyclic group. We propose a definition of sieving for an arbitrary group $G$ and study it for the dihedral group $I_2(n)$ of order $2n$. This requires understanding the generators of the representation ring of the dihedral group. For $n$ odd, we exhibit several instances of dihedral sieving which involve the generalized Fibonomial coefficients, recently studied by Amdeberhan, Chen, Moll, and Sagan. We also exhibit an instance of dihedral sieving involving Garsia and Haiman's $(q,t)$-Catalan numbers.
Set-Valued Young Tableaux and Product-Coproduct Prographs
Standard set-valued Young tableaux are a generalization of standard Young tableaux where cells can contain unordered sets of integers, with the added condition that every integer at position $(i,j)$ must be smaller that every integer at both $(i+1,j)$ and $(i,j+1)$. In this paper, we explore properties of standard set-valued Young tableaux with three rows and a fixed number of integers in every cell of each row (referred to as set-valued tableaux with row-constant density). Our primary focus is on standard set-valued Young tableaux with $1$ integer in each first-row cell, $k-1$ integers in each second-row cell, and $1$ integer in each third-row cell. For rectangular shapes $λ=n^3$, such tableaux are placed in bijection with closed $k$-ary product-coproduct prographs: directed plane graphs that correspond to finite compositions involving a $k$-ary product operator and a $k$-ary coproduct operator. That bijection is extended to three-row set-valued Young tableaux of non-rectangular and skew shape, and it is shown that a set-valued analogue of the Schützenberger involution on tableaux corresponds to $180$-degree rotation of the associated prographs. As a set-valued analogue of the hook-length formula is currently lacking, we also present direct enumerations of three-row standard set-valued Young tableaux for a variety of row-constant densities and a small number of columns. We then argue why the numbers of tableaux with the row-constant density $(1,k-1,1)$ should be interpreted as a one-parameter generalization of the three-dimensional Catalan numbers that mirrors the generalization of the (two-dimensional) Catalan numbers provided by the $k$-Catalan numbers.

We initiate a study of the representation of the symmetric group on the multilinear component of an $n$-ary generalization of the free Lie algebra, which we call a free LAnKe. Our central result is that the representation of the symmetric group $S_{2n-1}$ on the multilinear component of the free LAnKe with $2n-1$ generators is given by an irreducible representation whose dimension is the $n$th Catalan number. This leads to a more general result on eigenspaces of a certain linear operator, which has additional consequences. We also obtain a new presentation of Specht modules of staircase shape as a consequence of our central result.
Lattice Path Enumeration and Its Applications in Representation Theory
In this paper, we enumerate lattice paths with certain constraints and apply the corresponding results to develop formulas for calculating the dimensions of submodules of a class of modules for planar upper triangular rook monoids. In particular, we show that the famous Catalan numbers appear as the dimensions of some special modules; we also obtain some combinatorial identities

The goal of this paper is to introduce and study noncommutative Catalan numbers $C_n$ which belong to the free Laurent polynomial algebra in $n$ generators. Our noncommutative numbers admit interesting (commutative and noncommutative) specializations, one of them related to Garsia-Haiman $(q,t)$-versions, another -- to solving noncommutative quadratic equations. We also establish total positivity of the corresponding (noncommutative) Hankel matrices $H_m$ and introduce accompanying noncommutative binomial coefficients.
The set of alternating sign matrices which are determined by their X-ray is a member of the Catalan family
We exhibit a bijection between Dyck paths and alternating sign matrices which are determined by their antidiagonal sums.

Recently, the study of patterns in inversion sequences was initiated by Corteel-Martinez-Savage-Weselcouch and Mansour-Shattuck independently. Motivated by their works and a double Eulerian equidistribution due to Foata (1977), we investigate several classical statistics on restricted inversion sequences that are either known or conjectured to be enumerated by {\em Catalan}, {\em Large Schröder}, {\em Baxter} and {\em Euler} numbers. One of the two highlights of our results is a fascinating bijection between $000$-avoiding inversion sequences and Simsun permutations, which together with Foata's V- and S-codes, provide a proof of a restriced double Eulerian equdistribution. The other one is a refinement of a conjecture due to Martinez and Savage that the cardinality of $\I_n(\geq,\geq,>)$ is the $n$-th Baxter number, which is proved via the so-called {\em obstinate kernel method} developed by Bousquet-Mélou.

Fix an integer partition lambda that has no more than n parts. Let beta be a weakly increasing n-tuple with entries from {1,..,n}. The flagged Schur function indexed by lambda and beta is a polynomial generating function in x_1, .., x_n for certain semistandard tableaux of shape lambda. Let pi be an n-permutation. The type A Demazure character (key polynomial, Demazure polynomial) indexed by lambda and pi is another such polynomial generating function. Reiner and Shimozono and then Postnikov and Stanley studied coincidences between these two families of polynomials. Here their results are sharpened by the specification of unique representatives for the equivalence classes of indexes for both families of polynomials, extended by the consideration of more general beta, and deepened by proving that the polynomial coincidences also hold at the level of the underlying tableau sets. Let R be the set of lengths of columns in the shape of lambda that are less than n. Ordered set partitions of {1,..,n} with block sizes determined by R, called R-permutations, are used to describe the minimal length representatives for the parabolic quotient of the nth symmetric group specified by the set {1,..,n-1}\R. The notion of 312-avoidance is generalized from n-permutations to these set partitions. The R-parabolic Catalan number is defined to be the number of these. Every flagged Schur function arises as a Demazure polynomial. Those Demazure polynomials are precisely indexed by the R-312-avoiding R-permutations. Hence the number of flagged Schur functions that are distinct as polynomials is shown to be the R-parabolic Catalan number. The projecting and lifting processes that relate the notions of 312-avoidance and of R-312-avoidance are described with maps developed for other purposes.
Star of David and other patterns in the Hosoya-like polynomials triangles
In this paper we first generalize the numerical recurrence relation given by Hosoya to polynomials. Using this generalization we construct a Hosoya-like triangle for polynomials, where its entries are products of generalized Fibonacci polynomials (GFP). Examples of GFP are: Fibonacci polynomials, Chebyshev polynomials, Morgan-Voyce polynomials, Lucas polynomials, Pell polynomials, Fermat polynomials, Jacobsthal polynomials, Vieta polynomials and other familiar sequences of polynomials. For every choice of a GFP we obtain a triangular array of polynomials. In this paper we extend the star of David property, also called the Hoggatt-Hansell identity, to this type of triangles. We also establish the star of David property in the gibonomial triangle. In addition, we study other geometric patterns in these triangles and as a consequence we give geometric interpretations for the Cassini's identity, Catalan's identity, and other identities for Fibonacci polynomials.
Labeled binary trees, subarrangements of the Catalan arrangements, and Schur positivity

In 1995, the first author introduced a multivariate generating function {$G$} that tracks the distribution of ascents and descents in labeled binary trees. In addition to proving that $G$ is symmetric, he conjectured that $G$ is Schur positive. We prove this conjecture by expanding $G$ positively in terms of ribbon Schur functions. We obtain this expansion using a weight-preserving bijection whose inverse is inspired by the Push-Glide algorithm of Préville-Ratelle and Viennot. In fact, this weight-preserving bijection allows us to establish a stronger version of the first author's conjecture showing that the generating function restricted to labeled binary trees with a fixed canopy is still Schur positive.
We also discuss applications in the setting of hyperplane arrangements. We show that a certain specialization of $G$ equals the Frobenius characteristic of the natural $\mathfrak{S}_n$-action on regions of the semiorder arrangement, which we then expand in terms of {the Frobenius characteristics} of Foulkes characters. We also construct an $\mathfrak{S}_n$-action on regions of the Linial arrangement using a set of trees studied by Bernardi, and subsequently compute the character of this action by employing Lagrange inversion. The resulting expression generalizes Postnikov's formula for the number of regions in the Linial arrangement. As a final application, we prove $γ$-nonnegativity for the distribution of the number of right edges over local binary search trees.

This is the first of three papers that develop structures which are counted by a "parabolic" generalization of Catalan numbers. Fix a subset R of {1,..,n-1}. Consider the ordered partitions of {1,..,n} whose block sizes are determined by R. These are the "inverses" of (parabolic) multipermutations whose multiplicities are determined by R. The standard forms of the ordered partitions are refered to as "R-permutations". The notion of 312-avoidance is extended from permutations to R-permutations. Let lambda be a partition of N such that the set of column lengths in its shape is R or R union {n}. Fix an R-permutation pi. The type A Demazure character (key polynomial) in x_1, .., x_n that is indexed by lambda and pi can be described as the sum of the weight monomials for some of the semistandard Young tableau of shape lambda that are used to describe the Schur function indexed by lambda. Descriptions of these "Demazure" tableaux developed by the authors in earlier papers are used to prove that the set of these tableaux is convex in Z^N if and only if pi is R-312-avoiding if and only if the tableau set is the entire principal ideal generated by the key of pi. These papers were inspired by results of Reiner and Shimozono and by Postnikov and Stanley concerning coincidences between Demazure characters and flagged Schur functions. This convexity result is used in the next paper to deepen those results from the level of polynomials to the level of tableau sets. The R-parabolic Catalan number is defined to be the number of R-312-avoiding permutations. These special R-permutations are reformulated as "R-rightmost clump deleting" chains of subsets of {1,..,n} and as "gapless R-tuples"; the latter n-tuples arise in multiple contexts in these papers.
Tutte Polynomials of Symmetric Hyperplane Arrangements
Originally in 1954 the Tutte polynomial was a bivariate polynomial associated to a graph in order to enumerate the colorings of this graph and of its dual graph at the same time. However the Tutte polynomial reveals more of the internal structure of a graph, and contains even other specializations from other sciences like the Jones polynomial in Knot theory, the partition function of the Pott model in statistical physics, and the reliability polynomial in network theory. In this article, we study the Tutte polynomial associated to more general objects which are the arrangements of hyperplanes. Indeed determining the Tutte polynomial of a graph is equivalent to determining the Tutte polynomial of a special hyperplane arrangement called graphic arrangement. In 2007 Ardila computed the Tutte polynomials of the hyperplane arrangements associated to the classical Weyl groups, and the characteristic polynomials of the Catalan arrangements. The charateristic polynomial is also a specialization of the Tutte polynomial. In 2012 Seo computed the characteristic polynomials of the Shi threshold arrangements, and in 2017 Song computed the characteristic polynomials of the $\mathcal{I}_n$ arrangements in the plane and in the space. We aim to bring a more general result by introducing a wider class of hyperplane arrangements which is the set of symmetric hyperplane arrangements. We compute the Tutte polynomial of a symmetric hyperplane arrangement, and, as examples of application, we deduce the Tutte polynomials of the Catalan, the Shi threshold, and the $\mathcal{I}_n$ arrangements.
Cores with distinct parts and bigraded Fibonacci numbers

The notion of $(a,b)$-cores is closely related to rational $(a,b)$ Dyck paths due to Anderson's bijection, and thus the number of $(a,a+1)$-cores is given by the Catalan number $C_a$. Recent research shows that $(a,a+1)$ cores with distinct parts are enumerated by another important sequence- Fibonacci numbers $F_a$. In this paper, we consider the abacus description of $(a,b)$-cores to introduce the natural grading and generalize this result to $(a,as+1)$-cores. We also use the bijection with Dyck paths to count the number of $(2k-1,2k+1)$-cores with distinct parts. We give a second grading to Fibonacci numbers, induced by bigraded Catalan sequence $C_{a,b} (q,t)$.
A bijection between bargraphs and Dyck paths

Bargraphs are a special class of convex polyominoes. They can be identified with lattice paths with unit steps north, east, and south that start at the origin, end on the $x$-axis, and stay strictly above the $x$-axis everywhere except at the endpoints. Bargraphs, which are used to represent histograms and to model polymers in statistical physics, have been enumerated in the literature by semiperimeter and by several other statistics, using different methods such as the wasp-waist decomposition of Bousquet-Mélou and Rechnitzer, and a bijection with certain Motzkin paths.
In this paper we describe an unusual bijection between bargraphs and Dyck paths, and study how some statistics are mapped by the bijection. As a consequence, we obtain a new interpretation of Catalan numbers, as counting bargraphs where the semiperimeter minus the number of peaks is fixed.
A Catalan Subset of Descending Plane Partitions
Descending plane partitions, alternating sign matrices, and totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions are equinumerous combinatorial sets for which no explicit bijection is known. In this paper, we isolate a subset of descending plane partitions counted by the Catalan numbers. The proof follows by constructing a generating tree on these descending plane partitions that has the same structure as the generating tree for 231-avoiding permutations. We hope this result will provide insight on the search for a bijection with alternating sign matrices and/or totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions, since these also contain Catalan subsets.

We give a geometric realization of the polyhedra governed by the structure of associative algebras with co-inner products, or more precisely, governed by directed planar trees. Our explicit realization of these polyhedra, which include the associahedra in a special case, shows in particular that these polyhedra are homeomorphic to balls. We also calculate the number of vertices of the lowest generalized associahedra, giving appropriate generalizations of the Catalan numbers.

Stanley lists the class of Dyck paths where all returns to the axis are of odd length as one of the many objects enumerated by (shifted) Catalan numbers. By the standard bijection in this context, these special Dyck paths correspond to a class of rooted plane trees, so-called Catalan-Stanley trees.
This paper investigates a deterministic growth procedure for these trees by which any Catalan-Stanley tree can be grown from the tree of size one after some number of rounds; a parameter that will be referred to as the age of the tree. Asymptotic analyses are carried out for the age of a random Catalan-Stanley tree of given size as well as for the "speed" of the growth process by comparing the size of a given tree to the size of its ancestors.
