Enumerating five families of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences; and introducing the powered Catalan numbers

The first problem addressed by this article is the enumeration of some families of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences. We solve some enumerative conjectures left open by the foundational work on the topics by Corteel et al., some of these being also solved independently by Lin, and Kim and Lin. The strength of our approach is its robustness: we enumerate four families $F_1 \subset F_2 \subset F_3 \subset F_4$ of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences ordered by inclusion using the same approach. More precisely, we provide a generating tree (with associated succession rule) for each family $F_i$ which generalizes the one for the family $F_{i-1}$.
The second topic of the paper is the enumeration of a fifth family $F_5$ of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences (containing $F_4$). This enumeration is also solved \emph{via} a succession rule, which however does not generalize the one for $F_4$. The associated enumeration sequence, which we call the \emph{powered Catalan numbers}, is quite intriguing, and further investigated. We provide two different succession rules for it, denoted $Ω_{pCat}$ and $Ω_{steady}$, and show that they define two types of families enumerated by powered Catalan numbers. Among such families, we introduce the \emph{steady paths}, which are naturally associated with $Ω_{steady}$. They allow us to bridge the gap between the two types of families enumerated by powered Catalan numbers: indeed, we provide a size-preserving bijection between steady paths and valley-marked Dyck paths (which are naturally associated with $Ω_{pCat}$).
Along the way, we provide several nice connections to families of permutations defined by the avoidance of vincular patterns, and some enumerative conjectures.
Eulerian summation operators and a remarkable family of polynomials
We give several families of polynomials which are related by Eulerian summation operators. They satisfy interesting combinatorial properties like being integer-valued at integral points. This involves nearby-symmetries and a recursion for the values at half-integral points. We also obtain identities for super Catalan numbers.
Counting odd numbers in truncations of Pascal's triangle
A "truncation" of Pascal's triangle is a triangular array of numbers that satisfies the usual Pascal recurrence but with a boundary condition that declares some terminal set of numbers along each row of the array to be zero. Presented here is a family of natural truncations of Pascal's triangle that generalize a kind of Catalan triangle. The numbers in each array are realized as differences of binomial coefficients, as counts of certain lattice paths and tableaux, and as entries of representing matrices for certain linear transformations of polynomial spaces. Lucas's theorem is applied to determine precisely those truncations for which the number of odd entries on each row is a power of two.

We investigate certain nonassociative binary operations that satisfy a four-parameter generalization of the associative law. From this we obtain variations of the ubiquitous Catalan numbers and connections to many interesting combinatorial objects such as binary trees, plane trees, lattice paths, and permutations.
Counting fixed points free vector fields on $\mathbb{B}^{2}$
The number of diagrams of stationary points free vector fields in the 2-disk $\mathbb{B}^{2}$ is counted in the article. It is shown that the number of such diagrams with $2k$ exceptional points on the boundary $\mathbb{S}^{1}$ equals $3^{k-2}(C_{k}+2C_{k-1})$, where $C_{k}$ is the corresponding Catalan number. An algorithm for finding all such diagrams is discussed.

We show that families of action graphs, with initial graphs which are linear of varying length, give rise to self-convolutions of the Catalan sequence. We prove this result via a comparison with planar rooted forests with a fixed number of trees.

This paper introduces a Hopf algebra structure on a family of reduced pipe dreams. We show that this Hopf algebra is free and cofree, and construct a surjection onto a commutative Hopf algebra of permutations. The pipe dream Hopf algebra contains Hopf subalgebras with interesting sets of generators and Hilbert series related to subsequences of Catalan numbers. Three other relevant Hopf subalgebras include the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebra on complete binary trees, a Hopf algebra related to a special family of lattice walks on the quarter plane, and a Hopf algebra on $ν$-trees related to $ν$-Tamari lattices. One of this Hopf subalgebras motivates a new notion of Hopf chains in the Tamari lattice, which are used to present applications and conjectures in the theory of multivariate diagonal harmonics.

In this paper, we present some criteria for the $2$-$q$-log-convexity and $3$-$q$-log-convexity of combinatorial sequences, which can be regarded as the first column of certain infinite triangular array $[A_{n,k}(q)]_{n,k\geq0}$ of polynomials in $q$ with nonnegative coefficients satisfying the recurrence relation $$A_{n,k}(q)=A_{n-1,k-1}(q)+g_k(q)A_{n-1,k}(q)+h_{k+1}(q)A_{n-1,k+1}(q).$$ Those criterions can also be presented by continued fractions and generating functions. These allow a unified treatment of the $2$-$q$-log-convexity of alternating Eulerian polynomials, $2$-log-convexity of Euler numbers, and $3$-$q$-log-convexity of many classical polynomials, including the Bell polynomials, the Eulerian polynomials of Types $A$ and $B$, the $q$-Schröder numbers, $q$-central Delannoy numbers, the Narayana polynomials of Types $A$ and $B$, the generating functions of rows in the Catalan triangles of Aigner and Shapiro, the generating functions of rows in the large Schröder triangle, and so on, which extend many known results for $q$-log-convexity.
A supercongruence involving cubes of Catalan numbers

Parking functions are a widely studied class of combinatorial objects, with connections to several branches of mathematics. On the algebraic side, parking functions can be identified with the standard monomials of $M_n$, a certain monomial ideal in the polynomial ring $S = {\mathbb K}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ where a set of generators are indexed by the nonempty subsets of $[n] = \{1,2,\dots,n\}$. Motivated by constructions from the theory of chip-firing on graphs we study generalizations of parking functions determined by $M^{(k)}_n$, a subideal of $M_n$ obtained by allowing only generators corresponding to subsets of $[n]$ of size at most $k$. For each $k$ the set of standard monomials of $M^{(k)}_n$, denoted $\text{stan}_n^k$, contains the usual parking functions and has interesting combinatorial properties in its own right. For general $k$ we show that elements of $\text{stan}_n^k$ can be recovered as certain vector-parking functions, which in turn leads to a formula for their count via results of Yan. The symmetric group $S_n$ naturally acts on the set $\text{stan}_n^k$ and we also obtain a formula for the number of orbits under this action. For the case of $k = n-2$ we study combinatorial interpretations of $\text{stan}_n^{n-2}$ and relate them to properties of uprooted trees in terms of root degree and surface inversions. As a corollary we obtain a combinatorial identity for $n^n$ involving Catalan numbers, reminiscent of a result of Benjamin and Juhnke. For the case of $k = 1$ we observe that the number of elements $\text{stan}_n^1$ is given by the determinant of the reduced `signless' Laplacian, which provides a weighted count for $|\text{stan}_n^1|$ in terms generalized spanning trees known as `spanning TU-subgraphs'. Our constructions naturally generalize to arbitrary graphs and lead to a number of open questions.
A Proof the Functional Equation Conjecture
In the early 2000's the first and second named authors worked for a period of six years in an attempt of proving the Compositional Shuffle Conjecture [1]. Their approach was based on the discovery that all the Combinatorial properties predicted by the Compositional Shuffle Conjecture remain valid for each family of Parking Functions with prescribed diagonal cars. The validity of this property was reduced to the proof of a functional equation satisfied by a Catalan family of univariate polynomials. The main result in this paper is a proof of this functional equation. The Compositional Shuffle Conjecture was proved in 2015 by Eric Carlsson and Anton Mellit [3]. Our proof of the Functional Equation removes one of the main obstacles in the completion of the Garsia-Hicks approach to the proof of the Compositional Shuffle Conjecture. At the end of this writing we formulate a few further conjectures including what remains to be proved to complete this approach.

We prove two conjectures on sums of products of Catalan triangle numbers, which were originally conjectured by Miana, Ohtsuka, and Romero [Discrete Math. 340 (2017), 2388--2397]. The first one is proved by using Zeilberger's algorithm, and the second one is proved by establishing its $q$-analogue.

We study the poset $\mathcal{G}$ of all unlabelled graphs, up to isomorphism, with $H\le G$ if $H$ occurs as an induced subgraph in $G$. We present some general results on the Möbius function of intervals of $\mathcal{G}$ and some results for specific classes of graphs. This includes a case where the Möbius function is given by the Catalan numbers, which we prove using discrete Morse theory, and another case where it equals the Fibonacci numbers, therefore showing that the Möbius function is unbounded. A classification of the disconnected intervals of $\mathcal{G}$ is presented, which gives a large class of non-shellable intervals. We also present several conjectures on the structure of $\mathcal{G}$.

The aim of this paper is two-fold. We first prove several new interpretations of a kind of $(q,t)$-Catalan numbers along with their corresponding $γ$-expansions using pattern avoiding permutations. Secondly, we give a complete characterization of certain $(-1)$-phenomenon for each subset of permutations avoiding a single pattern of length three, and discuss their $q$-analogues utilizing the newly obtained $q$-$γ$-expansions, as well as the continued fraction of a quint-variate generating function due to Shin and the fourth author. Moreover, we enumerate the alternating permutations avoiding simultaneously two patterns, namely $(2413,3142)$ and $(1342,2431)$, of length four, and consider such $(-1)$-phenomenon for these two subsets as well.
Signature Catalan Combinatorics

The Catalan numbers constitute one of the most important sequences in combinatorics. Catalan objects have been generalized in various directions, including the classical Fuss-Catalan objects and the rational Catalan generalization of Armstrong-Rhoades-Williams. We propose a wider generalization of these families indexed by a composition $s$ which is motivated by the combinatorics of planar rooted trees; when $s=(2,...,2)$ and $s=(k+1,...,k+1)$ we recover the classical Catalan and Fuss-Catalan combinatorics, respectively. Furthermore, to each pair $(a,b)$ of relatively prime numbers we can associate a signature that recovers the combinatorics of rational Catalan objects. We present explicit bijections between the resulting $s$-Catalan objects, and a fundamental recurrence that generalizes the fundamental recurrence of the classical Catalan numbers. Our framework allows us to define signature generalizations of parking functions which coincide with the generalized parking functions studied by Pitman-Stanley and Yan, as well as generalizations of permutations which coincide with the notion of Stirling multipermutations introduced by Gessel-Stanley. Some of our constructions differ from the ones of Armstrong-Rhoades-Williams, however as a byproduct of our extension, we obtain the additional notions of rational permutations and rational trees.

We give a new Jacobi--Trudi-type formula for characters of finite-dimensional irreducible representations in type $C_n$ using characters of the fundamental representations and non-intersecting lattice paths. We give equivalent determinant formulas for the decomposition multiplicities for tensor powers of the spin representation in type $B_n$ and the exterior representation in type $C_n$. This gives a combinatorial proof of an identity of Katz and equates such a multiplicity with the dimension of an irreducible representation in type $C_n$. By taking certain specializations, we obtain identities for $q$-Catalan triangle numbers, the $q,t$-Catalan number of Stump, $q$-triangle versions of Motzkin and Riordan numbers, and generalizations of Touchard's identity. We use (spin) rigid tableaux and crystal base theory to show some formulas relating Catalan, Motzkin, and Riordan triangle numbers.

This article introduces and investigates a refinement of alternating sign trapezoids by means of Catalan objects and Motzkin paths. Alternating sign trapezoids are a generalisation of alternating sign triangles, which were recently introduced by Ayyer, Behrend and Fischer. We show that the number of alternating sign trapezoids associated with a Catalan object (resp. Motzkin path) is a polynomial function in the length of the shorter base of the trapezoid. We also study the rational roots of the polynomials and formulate several conjectures and derive some partial results. Lastly, we deduce a constant term identity for the refined counting of alternating sign trapezoids.

In this paper, we study pattern avoidances of generalized permutations and show that the number of all generalized permutations avoiding $π$ is independent of the choice of $π\in S_3$, which extends the classic results on permutations avoiding $π\in S_3$. Extending both Dyck path and Riordan path, we introduce the Catalan-Riordan path which turns out to be a combinatorial interpretation of the difference array of Catalan numbers. As applications, we interpret both Motzkin and Riordan numbers in two ways, via semistandard Young tableaux of two rows and generalized permutations avoiding $π\in S_3$. Analogous to Lewis's method, we establish a bijection from generalized permutations to rectangular semistandard Young tableaux which will recover several known results in the literature.
