Bipartition of graphs based on the normalized cut and spectral methods
In the first part of this paper, we survey results that are associated with three types of Laplacian matrices:difference, normalized, and signless. We derive eigenvalue and eigenvector formulaes for paths and cycles using circulant matrices and present an alternative proof for finding eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of paths and cycles using Chebyshev polynomials. Even though each results is separately well known, we unite them, and provide uniform proofs in a simple manner. The main objective of this study is to solve the problem of finding graphs, on which spectral clustering methods and normalized cuts produce different partitions. First, we derive a formula for a minimum normalized cut for graph classes such as paths, cycles, complete graphs, double-trees, cycle cross paths, and some complex graphs like lollipop graph $LP_{n,m}$, roach type graph $R_{n,k}$, and weighted path $P_{n,k}$. Next, we provide characteristic polynomials of the normalized Laplacian matrices ${\mathcal L}(P_{n,k})$ and ${\mathcal L}(R_{n,k})$. Then, we present counter example graphs based on $R_{n,k}$, on which spectral methods and normalized cuts produce different clusters.

Suppose $G$ is a simple graph with $n$ vertices, $m$ edges, and rank $r$. Let $χ_G(t)=a_0t^n-a_1t^{n-1}+\cdots +(-1)^ra_rt^{n-r}$ be the chromatic polynomial of $G$. For $q,k\in \Bbb{Z}$ and $0\le k\le q+r+1$, we obtain a sharp two-side bound for the partial binomial sum of the coefficient sequence, that is, \[ {r+q\choose k}\le \sum_{i=0}^{k}{q\choose k-i}a_{i}\le {m+q\choose k}. \] Indeed, this bound holds for the characteristic polynomial of hyperplane arrangements and matroids, and its weak version can be generalized to the characteristic polynomial of toric arrangements and arithmetic matroids. We also propose a problem on the geometric interpretation of the above bound.

Let $P$ be a locally finite poset with the interval space $\Int(P)$, and $R$ a ring with identity. We shall introduce the Möbius conjugation $μ^\ast$ sending each function $f:P\to R$ to an incidence function $μ^\ast(f):\Int(P)\to R$ such that $μ^\ast(fg)=μ^\ast(f)\astμ^\ast(g)$. Taking $P$ to be the intersection poset of a hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal{A}$, we shall obtain a convolution identity for the number $r(\mathcal{A})$ of regions and the number $b(\mathcal{A})$ of relatively bounded regions, and a reciprocity theorem of the characteristic polynomial $χ(\mathcal{A},t)$, which also leads to a combinatorial interpretation to the values $|χ(\mathcal{A},-q)|$ for large primes $q$. Moreover, all known convolution identities on Tutte polynomials of matroids will be direct consequences after specializing the poset $P$ and functions $f,g$.
A Beginner's Guide to Counting Spanning Trees in a Graph
(DRAFT VERSION) In this article we present a proof of the famous Kirchoff's Matrix-Tree theorem, which relates the number of spanning trees in a connected graph with the cofactors (and eigenvalues) of its combinatorial Laplacian matrix. This is a 165 year old result in graph theory and the proof is conceptually simple. However, the elegance of this result is it connects many apparently unrelated concepts in linear algebra and graph theory. Our motivation behind this work was to make the proof accessible to anyone with beginner\slash intermediate grasp of linear algebra. Therefore in this paper we present proof of every single argument leading to the final result. For example, we prove the elementary properties of determinants, relationship between the roots of characteristic polynomial (that is, eigenvalues) and the minors, the Cauchy-Binet formula, the Laplace expansion of determinant, etc.

We extend the Shi bijection from the Borel subalgebra case to parabolic subalgebras. In the process, the $I$-deleted Shi arrangement $\texttt{Shi}(I)$ naturally emerges. This arrangement interpolates between the Coxeter arrangement $\texttt{Cox}$ and the Shi arrangement $\texttt{Shi}$, and breaks the symmetry of $\texttt{Shi}$ in a certain symmetrical way. Among other things, we determine the characteristic polynomial $χ(\texttt{Shi}(I), t)$ of $\texttt{Shi}(I)$ explicitly for $A_{n-1}$ and $C_n$. More generally, let $\texttt{Shi}(G)$ be an arbitrary arrangement between $\texttt{Cox}$ and $\texttt{Shi}$. Armstrong and Rhoades recently gave a formula for $χ(\texttt{Shi}(G), t)$ for $A_{n-1}$. Inspired by their result, we obtain formulae for $χ(\texttt{Shi}(G), t)$ for $B_n$, $C_n$ and $D_n$.

We introduce some determinantal ideals of the generalized Laplacian matrix associated to a digraph G, that we call critical ideals of G. Critical ideals generalize the critical group and the characteristic polynomials of the adjacency and Laplacian matrices of a digraph. The main results of this article are the determination of some minimal generator sets and the reduced Grobner basis for the critical ideals of the complete graphs, the cycles and the paths. Also, we establish a bound between the number of trivial critical ideals and the stability and clique numbers of a graph.
Operators of rank 1, discrete path integration and graph Laplacians
We prove a formula for a characteristic polynomial of an operator expressed as a polynomial of rank 1 operators. The formula uses a discrete analog of path integration and implies a generalization of the Forman-Kenyon's formula [4,6] for a determinant of the graph Laplacian (which, in its turn, implies the famous matrix-tree theorem by Kirchhoff) as well as its level 2 analog, where the summation is performed over triangulated nodal surfaces with boundary.
Characteristic polynomials, related to the normal form of the non linear Schrödinger equation
We study the irreducibility of the characteristic polynomial of the energy graph of the non linear Schrödinger equation (NLS). This will be useful to the verification of the second Melnikov condition for NLS.

These are lecture notes for the Current Developments in Mathematics conference at Harvard, November, 2011. We discuss topological, probabilistic and combinatorial aspects of the Laplacian on a graph embedded on a surface. The three main goals are to discuss: (1) for "circular" planar networks, the characterization due to Colin de Verdière of Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator; (2) The connections with the random spanning tree model; and (3) the characteristic polynomial of the Laplacian on an annulus and torus.

Let M be a matroid on E, representable over a field of characteristic zero. We show that h-vectors of the following simplicial complexes are log-concave: 1. The matroid complex of independent subsets of E. 2. The broken circuit complex of $M$ relative to an ordering of E. The first implies a conjecture of Colbourn on the reliability polynomial of a graph, and the second implies a conjecture of Hoggar on the chromatic polynomial of a graph. The proof is based on the geometric formula for the characteristic polynomial of Denham, Garrousian, and Schulze.

For a subspace arrangement over a finite field we study the evaluation code defined on the arrangement's set of points. The length of this code is given by the subspace arrangement's characteristic polynomial. For coordinate subspace arrangements, the dimension is bounded below by the face vector of the corresponding simplicial complex. The minimum distance is determined for coordinate subspace arrangements where the simplicial complex is a skeleton.

In this paper, we recover the characteristic polynomial of an arrangement of hyperplanes by computing the rational equivalence class of the variety defined by the logarithmic ideal of the arrangement. The logarithmic ideal was introduced in [arXiv:0907.0896v2] in a study of the critical points of the master function. The above result is used to understand the asymptotic behavior the Hilbert series of the logarithmic ideal. As an application, we prove the Solomon-Terao formula under the tame hypothesis by identifying each side of the formula with a certain specialization of the Hilbert series of the logarithmic ideal.

In this article we give a computational study of combinatorics of the discriminantal arrangements. The discriminantal arrangements are parametrized by two positive integers n and k such that n>k. The intersection lattice of the discriminantal arrangement with the parameter (n,k) is isomorphic to the intersection lattice of the hyperplane arrangement generated by n generic points in the d-dimensional vector space where d=n-k-1. The combinatorics of the discriminantal arrangements is very hard, except for the special cases of the Boolean arrangements (k=0) and the braid arrangements (k=1). We review some results on the intersection lattices of the arrangements generated by generic points and use them to obtain some computational results on the characteristic polynomials of the discriminantal arrangements.

Ziegler showed that free arrangements have free restricted multiarrangements (multirestrictions). After Ziegler's work, several results concerning "reverse direction", namely characterizing freeness of an arrangement via that of multirestriction, have appeared. In this paper, we prove that the second Betti number of the arrangement plays a crucial role.

We define a de Bruijn process with parameters n and L as a certain continuous-time Markov chain on the de Bruijn graph with words of length L over an n-letter alphabet as vertices. We determine explicitly its steady state distribution and its characteristic polynomial, which turns out to decompose into linear factors. In addition, we examine the stationary state of two specializations in detail. In the first one, the de Bruijn-Bernoulli process, this is a product measure. In the second one, the Skin-deep de Bruin process, the distribution has constant density but nontrivial correlation functions. The two point correlation function is determined using generating function techniques.

The entropic discriminant is a non-negative polynomial associated to a matrix. It arises in contexts ranging from statistics and linear programming to singularity theory and algebraic geometry. It describes the complex branch locus of the polar map of a real hyperplane arrangement, and it vanishes when the equations defining the analytic center of a linear program have a complex double root. We study the geometry of the entropic discriminant, and we express its degree in terms of the characteristic polynomial of the underlying matroid. Singularities of reciprocal linear spaces play a key role. In the corank-one case, the entropic discriminant admits a sum of squares representation derived from the discriminant of a characteristic polynomial of a symmetric matrix.
Spectra of Uniform Hypergraphs

We present a spectral theory of hypergraphs that closely parallels Spectral Graph Theory. A number of recent developments building upon classical work has led to a rich understanding of "hyperdeterminants" of hypermatrices, a.k.a. multidimensional arrays. Hyperdeterminants share many properties with determinants, but the context of multilinear algebra is substantially more complicated than the linear algebra required to address Spectral Graph Theory (i.e., ordinary matrices). Nonetheless, it is possible to define eigenvalues of a hypermatrix via its characteristic polynomial as well as variationally. We apply this notion to the "adjacency hypermatrix" of a uniform hypergraph, and prove a number of natural analogues of basic results in Spectral Graph Theory. Open problems abound, and we present a number of directions for further study.
Matroids and log-concavity
We show that f-vectors of matroid complexes of realisable matroids are log-concave. This was conjectured by Mason in 1972. Our proof uses the recent result by Huh and Katz who showed that the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a realisable matroid form a log-concave sequence. We also discuss the relationship between log-concavity of f-vectors and h-vectors of matroids. In the last section we explain the connection between zonotopal algebra and f-vectors and characteristic polynomials of matroids.
On the Wiener index and Laplacian coefficients of graphs with given diameter or radius

Let $G$ be a simple undirected $n$-vertex graph with the characteristic polynomial of its Laplacian matrix $L(G)$, $\det (λI - L (G))=\sum_{k = 0}^n (-1)^k c_k λ^{n - k}$. It is well known that for trees the Laplacian coefficient $c_{n-2}$ is equal to the Wiener index of $G$. Using a result of Zhou and Gutman on the relation between the Laplacian coefficients and the matching numbers in subdivided bipartite graphs, we characterize first the trees with given diameter and then the connected graphs with given radius which simultaneously minimize all Laplacian coefficients. This approach generalizes recent results of Liu and Pan [MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 60 (2008), 85--94] and Wang and Guo [MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 60 (2008), 609--622] who characterized $n$-vertex trees with fixed diameter $d$ which minimize the Wiener index. In conclusion, we illustrate on examples with Wiener and modified hyper-Wiener index that the opposite problem of simultaneously maximizing all Laplacian coefficients has no solution.

In a recent paper, the first author proved the log-concavity of the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a matroid realizable over a field of characteristic 0, answering a long-standing conjecture of Read in graph theory. We extend the proof to all realizable matroids, making progress towards a more general conjecture of Rota-Heron-Welsh. Our proof follows from an identification of the coefficients of the reduced characteristic polynomial as answers to particular intersection problems on a toric variety. The log-concavity then follows from an inequality of Hodge type.
