Cohomologies of tautological bundles of matroids
Tautological bundles of realizations of matroids were introduced in [BEST23] as a unifying geometric model for studying matroids. We compute the cohomologies of exterior and symmetric powers of these vector bundles, and show that they depend only on the matroid of the realization. As an application, we show that the log canonical bundle of a wonderful compactification of a hyperplane arrangement complement, in particular the moduli space of pointed rational curves, has vanishing higher cohomologies.

On the weight zero compactly supported cohomology of $\mathcal{H}_{g, n}$
For $g\ge 2$ and $n\ge 0$, let $\mathcal{H}_{g,n}\subset \mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ denote the complex moduli stack of $n$-marked smooth hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$. A normal crossings compactification of this space is provided by the theory of pointed admissible $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-covers. We explicitly determine the resulting dual complex, and we use this to define a graph complex which computes the weight zero compactly supported cohomology of $\mathcal{H}_{g, n}$. Using this graph complex, we give a sum-over-graphs formula for the $S_n$-equivariant weight zero compactly supported Euler characteristic of $\mathcal{H}_{g, n}$. This formula allows for the computer-aided calculation, for each $g\le 7$, of the generating function $\mathsf{h}_g$ for these equivariant Euler characteristics for all $n$. More generally, we determine the dual complex of the boundary in any moduli space of pointed admissible $G$-covers of genus zero curves, when $G$ is abelian, as a symmetric $Δ$-complex. We use these complexes to generalize our formula for $\mathsf{h}_g$ to moduli spaces of $n$-pointed smooth abelian covers of genus zero curves.

A Serre spectral sequence for the moduli space of tropical curves
We construct, for all $g\geq 2$ and $n\geq 0$, a spectral sequence of rational $S_n$-representations which computes the $S_n$-equivariant reduced rational cohomology of the tropical moduli spaces of curves $Δ_{g,n}$ in terms of compactly supported cohomology groups of configuration spaces of $n$ points on graphs of genus $g$. Using the canonical $S_n$-equivariant isomorphisms $\widetilde{H}^{i-1}(Δ_{g,n};\mathbb{Q}) \cong W_0 H^i_c(\mathcal{M}_{g,n};\mathbb{Q})$, we calculate the weight $0$, compactly supported rational cohomology of the moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ in the range $g=3$ and $n\leq 9$, with partial computations available for $n\leq 13$.

Geometry of the twin manifolds of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties and unicellular LLT polynomials
Recently, Masuda-Sato and Precup-Sommers independently proved an LLT version of the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture which says that the Frobenius characteristics of the cohomology of the twin manifolds of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties are unicellular LLT polynomials. The purpose of this paper is to study the geometry of twin manifolds and we prove that they are related by explicit blowups and fiber bundle maps. Upon taking their cohomology, we obtain a direct proof of the modular law which establishes the LLT Shareshian-Wachs conjecture.

Forest polynomials and the class of the permutahedral variety
We study a basis of the polynomial ring that we call forest polynomials. This family of polynomials is indexed by a combinatorial structure called indexed forests and permits several definitions, one of which involves flagged P-partitions. As such, these polynomials have a positive expansion in the basis of slide polynomials. By a novel insertion procedure that may be viewed as a generalization of the Sylvester correspondence we establish that Schubert polynomials decompose positively in terms of forest polynomials. Our insertion procedure involves a correspondence on words which allows us to show that forest polynomials multiply positively. We proceed to show that forest polynomials are a particularly convenient basis in regards to studying the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo the ideal of positive degree quasisymmetric polynomials. This aspect allows us to give a manifestly nonnegative integral description for the Schubert class expansion of the cohomology class of the permutahedral variety in terms of a parking procedure. We study the associated combinatorics in depth and introduce a multivariate extension of mixed Eulerian numbers.

Integral equivariant cohomology of affine Grassmannians
Published in Can. Math. Bull. 67 (2024) 727-741 • View PublicationBIB
We give explicit presentations of the integral equivariant cohomology of the affine Grassmannians and flag varieties in type A, arising from their natural embeddings in the corresponding infinite (Sato) Grassmannian and flag variety. These presentations are compared with results obtained by Lam and Shimozono, for rational equivariant cohomology of the affine Grassmannian, and by Larson, for the integral cohomology of the moduli stack of vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^1$.

Symmetric Products and a Cartan-type formula for polyhedral products
We give a geometric method for determining the cohomology groups of a polyhedral product under suitable freeness conditions or with coefficients taken in a field. This is done by considering first the special case for which the pairs of spaces are wedge decomposable. We derive a decomposition for these polyhedral products which resembles a Cartan formula. The theory of symmetric products is used then to generalize the result to polyhedral products involving arbitrary pairs. This leads to a direct computation of the Hilbert-Poincaré series and to other applications.

Cohomology of open sets
If G is a finite abstract simplicial complex and K is a subcomplex of G and U=G-K is the open complement of K in G, the Betti vectors of K and U and G satisfy the inequality b(G) less or equal b(K)+b(U).

Equivariant cohomology of even-dimensional complex quadrics from a combinatorial point of view
Published in Osaka Journal of Mathematics, Vol 62, No 4, pp. 539--563, 2025 • Search Publication
The purpose of this paper is to determine the ring structure of the graph equivariant cohomology of the GKM graph induced from the even-dimensional complex quadrics. We show that the graph equivariant cohomology is generated by two types of subgraphs in the GKM graph, which are subject to four different types of relations. By utilizing this ring structure, we establish the multiplicative relation for the generators of degree 2n and provide an alternative computation of the ordinary cohomology ring of 4n-dimensional complex quadrics, as previously computed by H. Lai. Additionally, we provide a combinatorial explanation for why the square of the 2n degree generator x vanishes when n is odd and is non-vanishing when n is even.

Applications of Homogeneous Fiber Bundles to the Schubert Varieties
This article explores the relationship between Schubert varieties and equivariant embeddings, using the framework of homogeneous fiber bundles over flag varieties. We show that the homogenous fiber bundles obtained from Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen varieties are always toroidal. Furthermore, we identify the wonderful varieties among them. We give a short proof of a conjecture of Gao, Hodges, and Yong for deciding when a Schubert variety is spherical with respect to an action of a Levi subgroup. By using BP-decompositions, we obtain a characterization of the smooth spherical Schubert varieties. Among the other applications of our results are: 1) a characterization of the spherical Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen varieties, 2) an alternative proof of the fact that, in type A, every singular Schubert variety of torus complexity 1 is a spherical Schubert variety, and 3) a proof of the fact that, for simply laced algebraic groups of adjoint type, every spherical $G$-Schubert variety is locally rigid, that is to say, the first cohomology of its tangent sheaf vanishes.

The combinatorics of supertorus sheaf cohomology
Affine superspace $\mathbb{C}^{1 \mid n}$ has a single bosonic coordinate $z$ and $n$ fermionic coordinates $θ_1, \dots, θ_n$. Let $M$ be the supertorus obtained by quotienting $\mathbb{C}^{1 \mid n}$ by the abelian group generated by the maps $S: (z,θ_1, \dots, θ_n) \mapsto (z + 1, θ_1, \dots, θ_n)$ and $T: (z, θ_1, \dots, θ_n) \mapsto (z + t, θ_1 + α_1, \dots, θ_n + α_n)$ where $t \in \mathbb{C}$ has positive imaginary part and $α_1, \dots, α_n$ are independent fermionic parameters. We compute the zeroth and first cohomology groups of the structure sheaf $\mathcal{O}$ of $M$ as doubly graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-modules, exhibiting an instance of Serre duality between these groups. We use skein relations and noncrossing matchings to give a combinatorial presentation of $H^0(M,\mathcal{O})$ in terms of generators and relations.

James reduced product schemes and double quasisymmetric functions
Symmetric function theory is a key ingredient in the Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Quasisymmetric functions are analogues that are similarly central to algebraic combinatorics, but for which the associated geometry is poorly developed. Baker and Richter (2008) showed that $\textrm{QSym}$ manifests topologically as the cohomology ring of the loop suspension of infinite projective space or equivalently of its combinatorial homotopy model, the James reduced product $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$. In recent work, we used this viewpoint to develop topologically-motivated bases of $\textrm{QSym}$ and initiate a Schubert calculus for $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$ in both cohomology and $K$-theory. Here, we study the torus-equivariant cohomology of $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$. We identify a cellular basis and introduce double monomial quasisymmetric functions as combinatorial representatives, analogous to the factorial Schur functions and double Schubert polynomials of classical Schubert calculus. We also provide a combinatorial Littlewood--Richardson rule for the structure coefficients of this basis. Furthermore, we introduce an algebro-geometric analogue of the James reduced product construction. In particular, we prove that the James reduced product of a complex projective variety also carries the structure of a projective variety.

Splitting the cohomology of Hessenberg varieties and e-positivity of chromatic symmetric functions
For each indifference graph, there is an associated regular semisimple Hessenberg variety, whose cohomology recovers the chromatic symmetric function of the graph. The decomposition theorem applied to the forgetful map from the regular semisimple Hessenberg variety to the projective space describes the cohomology of the Hessenberg variety as a sum of smaller pieces. We give a combinatorial description of the Frobenius character of each piece. This provides a generalization of the symmetric functions attached to Stanley's local h-polynomials of the permutahedral variety to any Hessenberg variety. As a consequence, we can prove that the coefficient of $e_λ$, where $λ$ is any partition of length 2, in the e-expansion of the chromatic symmetric function of any indifference graph is non-negative.

On the signature of unimodular fans
N.C.Leung and V.Reiner showed that certain convexity conditions on a complete rational simplicial fan determine the sign of the signature of the Poincaré pairing on the cohomology of the associated toric variety. The purpose of the present article is to give an "elementary" proof of their result.

Random clique complex process inside the critical window
We consider the random clique complex process - the process of clique complexes induced by the complete graph with i.i.d. Uniform edge weights. We investigate the evolution of the Betti numbers of the clique complex process in the critical window and in particular, show a process-level convergence of the Betti numbers to a Poisson process. Our proof technique gives easily an hitting time result i.e, with high probability, the $k$th cohomology becomes trivial when there are no more isolated $k$-faces. Our results imply that the thresholds for vanishing of cohomology of the clique complex process coincides with that of the threshold for vanishing of `instantaneous' homology determined by \citet{SVT}. We also give a lower bound for the probability of clique complex process to have Kazhdan's property $(T)$. These results show a different behaviour for the clique complex process compared to the Čech complex process investigated in the geometric setting by \citet{B19}.

Alcove Walks and GKM Theory for Affine Flags
We develop the GKM theory for the torus-equivariant cohomology of the affine flag variety using the combinatorics of alcove walks. Dual to the usual GKM setup, which depicts the orbits of the small torus action on a graph, alcove walks take place in tessellations of Euclidean space. Walks in affine rank two occur on triangulations of the plane, providing a more direct connection to splines used for approximating surfaces. Alcove walks in GKM theory also need not be minimal length, and can instead be randomly generated, giving rise to more flexible implementation. This work reinterprets and recovers classical results in GKM theory on the affine flag variety, generalizing them to both non-minimal and folded alcove walks, all motivated by applications to splines.

On tropical Hodge theory for tropical varieties
To prove log-concavity of the characteristic polynomials of matroids, Adiprasito-Huh-Katz proved the Kähler package (the hard Lefschetz theorem and the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations) for their Chow rings. Amini-Piquerez generalized it to tropical cohomology of smooth projective tropical varieties. Their proofs were combinatorial. In this paper, we establish tropical Hodge theory except for regularity of solutions of Laplacian, and give a conditional proof of the Kähler package in the same way as compact Kähler manifolds.

Restricted Partitions and $SL_2$ Cohomology
The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we study the number of partitions of a positive integer $m$ into at most $n$ parts in a given set $A$. We prove that such a number is bounded by the $n$-th Fibonacci number $F(n)$ for any $m$ and some family of sets $A$ including sets of powers of an integer. Then, in the second part of the paper, we provide new results in bounding the cohomology of the simple algebraic group $SL_2$ with coefficients in Weyl modules.

Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of braid matroids
Published in Comm. Amer. Math. Soc. 4 (2024), 64-79 • View PublicationBIB
We provide a combinatorial interpretation of the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial of the matroid arising from the braid arrangement of type $\mathrm{A}_{n-1}$, which gives an interpretation of the intersection cohomology Betti numbers of the reciprocal plane of the braid arrangement. Moreover, we prove an equivariant version of this result. The key combinatorial object is a class of matroids arising from series-parallel networks. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Elias, Proudfoot, and Wakefield on the top coefficient of Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of braid matroids, and we provide explicit generating functions for their Kazhdan--Lusztig and $Z$-polynomials.

Supersolvability of built lattices and Koszulness of generalized Chow rings
Published in Compositio Math. 161 (2025) 1284-1312 • View PublicationBIB
We give an explicit quadratic Grobner basis for generalized Chow rings of supersolvable built lattices, with the help of the operadic structure on geometric lattices introduced in a previous article. This shows that the generalized Chow rings associated to minimal building sets of supersolvable lattices are Koszul. As another consequence, we get that the cohomology algebras of the components of the extended modular operad in genus 0 are Koszul.
