Strong equivariant positivity for homogeneous varieties and back-stable coproduct coefficients
Using a transversality argument, we demonstrate the positivity of certain coefficients in the equivariant cohomology and K-theory of a generalized flag manifold. This strengthens earlier equivariant positivity theorems (of Graham and Anderson-Griffeth-Miller) by further constraining the roots which can appear in these coefficients. As an application, we deduce that structure constants for comultiplication in the equivariant K-theory of an infinite flag manifold exhibit an unusual positivity property, establishing conjectures of Lam-Lee-Shimozono. Along the way, we present alternative formulas for the back stable Grothendieck polynomials defined by those authors, as well as a new method for computing the coproduct coefficients.

Coordinate rings of regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties in the open opposite Schubert cell
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e44 • View PublicationBIB
Dale Peterson has discovered a surprising result that the quantum cohomology ring of the flag variety $\mbox{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})/B$ is isomorphic to the coordinate ring of the intersection of the Peterson variety $\mbox{Pet}_n$ and the opposite Schubert cell associated with the identity element $Ω_e^\circ$ in $\mbox{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})/B$. This is an unpublished result, so papers of Kostant and Rietsch are referred for this result. An explicit presentation of the quantum cohomology ring of $\mbox{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})/B$ is given by Ciocan-Fontanine and Givental-Kim. In this paper we introduce further quantizations of their presentation so that they reflect the coordinate rings of the intersections of regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties $\mbox{Hess}(N,h)$ and $Ω_e^\circ$ in $\mbox{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})/B$. In other words, we generalize the Peterson's statement to regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties via the presentation given by Ciocan-Fontanine and Givental-Kim. As an application of our theorem, we show that the singular locus of the intersection of some regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(N,h_m)$ and $Ω_e^\circ$ is the intersection of certain Schubert variety and $Ω_e^\circ$ where $h_m=(m,n,\ldots,n)$ for $1<m<n$. We also see that $\mbox{Hess}(N,h_2) \cap Ω_e^\circ$ is related with the cyclic quotient singularity.

On finite generation in magnitude (co)homology, and its torsion
Published • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this paper is to apply the framework, which was developed by Sam and Snowden, to study structural properties of graph homologies, in the spirit of Ramos, Miyata and Proudfoot. Our main results concern the magnitude homology of graphs introduced by Hepworth and Willerton. More precisely, for graphs of bounded genus, we prove that magnitude cohomology, in each homological degree, has rank which grows at most polynomially in the number of vertices, and that its torsion is bounded. As a consequence, we obtain analogous results for path homology of (undirected) graphs. We complement the work with a proof that the category of planar graphs of bounded genus and marked edges, with contractions, is quasi-Gröbner.

Equivariant oriented homology of the affine Grassmannian
We generalize the property of small-torus equivariant K-homology of the affine Grassmannian to general oriented (co)homology theory in the sense of Levine and Morel. The main tool we use is the formal affine Demazure algebra associated to the affine root system. More precisely, we prove that the small-torus equivariant oriented cohomology of the affine Grassmannian satisfies the GKM condition. We also show that its dual, the small-torus equivariant homology, is isomorphic to the centralizer of the equivariant oriented cohomology of a point in the the formal affine Demazure algebra.

Finite topologies for finite geometries
Without leaving finite mathematics and using finite topological spaces only, we give a definition of homeomorphisms of finite abstract simplicial complexes or finite graphs. Besides exploring the definition in various contexts, we add some remarks like that the general Lefschetz formula works for any continuous map on any finite topological space. We also noted that any higher order Wu characteristic as well as their cohomology are topological invariants which are not homotopy invariants. Energy theorems allow to express these topological invariants in terms of interaction energies of local open sets.

Hochschild cohomology of symmetric groups and generating functions,II
We relate the generating functions of the dimensions of the Hochschild cohomology in any fixed degree of the symmetric groups with those of blocks of the symmetric groups. We show that the first Hochschild cohomology of a positive defect block of a symmetric group is non-zero, answering in the affirmative a question of the third author. To do this, we prove a formula expressing the dimension of degree one Hochschild cohomology as a sum of dimensions of centres of blocks of smaller symmetric groups. This in turn is a consequence of a general formula that makes more precise a theorem of our previous paper describing the generating functions for the dimensions of Hochschild cohomology of symmetric groups.

Comet-shaped quiver varieties, Weyl group actions, and modified Kostka polynomials
We study an algebra spanned by modified Kostka polynomials. Particular structure coefficients of this algebra are interpreted as traces of some Weyl group actions on the intersection cohomology of comet-shaped quiver varieties.

A splitting property of the chromatic homology of the complete graph
Khovanov introduced a bigraded cohomology theory of links whose graded Euler characteristic is the Jones polynomial. The theory was subsequently applied to the chromatic polynomial of graph, resulting in a categorification known as the ``chromatic homology''. Much as in the Khovanov homology, the chromatic polynomial can be obtained by taking the Euler characteristic of the chromatic homology. In the present paper, we introduce a combinatorial description of enhanced states that can be applied to analysis of the homology in an explicit way by hand. Using the new combinatorial description, we show a splitting property of the chromatic homology for a certain class of graphs. Finally, as an application of the description, we compute the chromatic homology of the complete graph.

The Kromatic Symmetric Function: A $K$-theoretic Analogue of $X_G$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schur functions are a basis of the symmetric function ring that represent Schubert cohomology classes for Grassmannians. Replacing the cohomology ring with $K$-theory yields a rich combinatorial theory of inhomogeneous deformations, where Schur functions are replaced by their $K$-analogues, the basis of symmetric Grothendieck functions. We introduce and initiate a theory of the Kromatic symmetric function $\overline{X}_G$, a $K$-theoretic analogue of the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a graph $G$. The Kromatic symmetric function is a generating series for graph colorings in which vertices may receive any nonempty set of distinct colors such that neighboring color sets are disjoint. Our main result lifts a theorem of Gasharov (1996) to this setting, showing that when $G$ is a claw-free incomparability graph, $\overline{X}_G$ is a positive sum of symmetric Grothendieck functions. This result suggests a topological interpretation of Gasharov's theorem. We then show that the Kromatic symmetric functions of path graphs are not positive in any of several $K$-analogues of the $e$-basis of symmetric functions, demonstrating that the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture (1993) does not have such a lift to $K$-theory and so is unlikely to be amenable to a topological perspective. We also define a vertex-weighted extension of $\overline{X}_G$ and show that it admits a deletion--contraction relation. Finally, we give a $K$-analogue for $\overline{X}_G$ of the classic monomial-basis expansion of $X_G$.

Parabolic Lusztig varieties and chromatic symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The characters of Kazhdan--Lusztig elements of the Hecke algebra over $S_n$ (and in particular, the chromatic symmetric function of indifference graphs) are completely encoded in the (intersection) cohomology of certain subvarieties of the flag variety. Considering the forgetful map to some partial flag variety, the decomposition theorem tells us that this cohomology splits as a sum of intersection cohomology groups with coefficients in some local systems of subvarieties of the partial flag variety. We prove that these local systems correspond to representations of subgroups of $S_n$. An explicit characterization of such representations would provide a recursive formula for the computation of such characters/chromatic symmetric functions, which could settle Haiman's conjecture about the positivity of the monomial characters of Kazhdan--Lusztig elements and Stanley--Stembridge conjecture about $e$-positivity of chromatic symmetric function of indifference graphs. We also find a connection between the character of certain homology groups of subvarieties of the partial flag varieties and the Grojnowski--Haiman hybrid basis of the Hecke algebra.

Hard Lefschetz properties, complete intersections and numerical dimensions
We study the positivity of complete intersections of nef classes. We first give a sufficient and necessary characterization on the complete intersection classes which have hard Lefschetz property on a compact complex torus, equivalently, in the linear case. In turn, this provides us new kinds of cohomology classes which have Hodge-Riemann property or hard Lefschetz property on an arbitrary compact Kähler manifold. We also give a complete characterization on when the complete intersection classes are non-vanishing on an arbitrary compact Kähler manifold. Both characterizations are given by the numerical dimensions of various partial summations of the given nef classes. As an interesting byproduct, we show that the numerical dimension endows any finite set of nef classes with a loopless polymatroid structure.

2-step Nilpotent $L_\infty$-algebras and Hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe a procedure to attach a nilpotent strong homotopy Lie algebra to every simple hypergraph and prove that two hypergraphs are isomorphic if and only if the corresponding strong homotopy Lie algebras are isomorphic. As an application, we characterize hypergraphs admitting a system of distinct representatives in terms of symplectic forms on the corresponding strong homotopy Lie algebra. We conclude with a combinatorial description of the cohomology of these strong homotopy Lie algebras in low degree.

Stembridge codes and Chow rings
It is well known that the Eulerian polynomial is the Hilbert series of the cohomology of the permutohedral variety. We answer a question of Stembridge on finding a geometric explanation of the \emph{permutation representation} this cohomology carries. Our explanation involves an $\mathfrak{S}_n$-equivariant bijection between a basis for the Chow ring of the Boolean matroid and codes introduced by Stembridge. There are analogous results for the stellohedral variety. We provide a geometric explanation of the permutation representation that its cohomology carries. This involves the augmented Chow ring of a matroid introduced by Braden, Huh, Matherne, Proudfoot and Wang. Along the way, we also obtain some new results on augmented Chow rings.
Hilbert-Poincaré series of matroid Chow rings and intersection cohomology
Published in Advances in Mathematics, Volume 449, July 2024, no. 109733 • View PublicationBIB
We study the Hilbert series of four objects arising in the Chow-theoretic and Kazhdan-Lusztig framework of matroids. These are, respectively, the Hilbert series of the Chow ring, the augmented Chow ring, the intersection cohomology module, and its stalk at the empty flat. We develop a parallelism between the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid and the Hilbert series of its Chow ring. This extends to a parallelism between the $Z$-polynomial of a matroid and the Hilbert series of its augmented Chow ring. This suggests to bring ideas from one framework to the other. Our two main motivations are the real-rootedness conjecture for all of these polynomials, and the problem of computing them. We provide several intrinsic definitions of these invariants; also, by leveraging that they are valuations under matroid polytope subdivisions, we deduce a fast way for computing them for a large class of matroids. Uniform matroids are a case of combinatorial interest; we link the resulting polynomials with certain real-rooted families such as the (binomial) Eulerian polynomials, and we settle a conjecture of Hameister, Rao, and Simpson. Furthermore, we prove the real-rootedness of the Hilbert series of the augmented Chow rings of uniform matroids via a result of Haglund and Zhang; and in addition, we prove a version of a conjecture of Gedeon in the Chow setting: uniform matroids maximize coefficient-wisely these polynomials for matroids with fixed rank and size. By relying on the nonnegativity of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and the semi-small decompositions of Braden, Huh, Matherne, Proudfoot, and Wang, we strengthen the unimodality of the Hilbert series of Chow rings, augmented Chow rings, and intersection cohomologies to $γ$-positivity, a property for palindromic polynomials that lies between unimodality and real-rootedness; this settles a conjecture of Ferroni, Nasr, and Vecchi.
A Generalization of the Ishida Complex with applications
We construct a generalize Ishida complex to compute the local cohomology with monomial support of modules over quotients of polynomial rings by cellular binomial ideals. As a consequence, we obtain a combinatorial criterion to determine when such a quotient is Cohen--Macaulay. In particular, this gives a Cohen--Macaulayness criterion for lattice ideals. We also prove a result relating the local cohomology with radical monomial ideal support of an affine semigroup ring to the local cohomology with maximal ideal support of the quotient of the affine semigroup ring by the radical monomial ideal. This requires a combinatorial assumption on the semigroup, which holds for (not necessarily normal) semigroups whose cone is the cone over a simplex.
Quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian and unitary Dyson Brownian motion
We study a class of commuting Markov kernels whose simplest element describes the movement of $k$ particles on a discrete circle of size $n$ conditioned to not intersect each other. Such Markov kernels are related to the quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian, which is an algebraic object counting analytic maps from $\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{C})$ to the Grassmannian space of k-dimensional vector subspaces of $\mathbb{C}^n$ with prescribed constraints at some points of $\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{C})$. We obtain a Berry-Esseen theorem and a local limit theorem for an arbitrary product of approximately $n^2$ Markov kernels belonging to the above class, when k is fixed. As a byproduct of those results, we derive asymptotic formulas for the quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian in terms of the heat kernel on $SU (k)$.

Graded local cohomology of modules over semigroup rings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a combinatorial description of local cohomology modules of a graded module over a semigroup ring, with support at the graded maximal ideal. This combinatorial framework yields Hochster-type formulas for the Hilbert series of such local cohomology modules in terms of the homology of finitely many polyhedral cell complexes. A Cohen--Macaulay criterion immediately follows. We also provide an alternative proof of a result of [18] characterizing Cohen--Macaulay affine semigroup rings.

Double Balanced Sets in High Dimensional Expanders
Recent works have shown that expansion of pseudorandom sets is of great importance. However, all current works on pseudorandom sets are limited only to product (or approximate product) spaces, where Fourier Analysis methods could be applied. In this work we ask the natural question whether pseudorandom sets are relevant in domains where Fourier Analysis methods cannot be applied, e.g., one-sided local spectral expanders. We take the first step in the path of answering this question. We put forward a new definition for pseudorandom sets, which we call ``double balanced sets''. We demonstrate the strength of our new definition by showing that small double balanced sets in one-sided local spectral expanders have very strong expansion properties, such as unique-neighbor-like expansion. We further show that cohomologies in cosystolic expanders are double balanced, and use the newly derived strong expansion properties of double balanced sets in order to obtain an exponential improvement over the current state of the art lower bound on their minimal distance.

Rational Homotopy Type of Complements of Submanifold Arrangements
In this work we provide an explicit cdga that controls the rational homotopy type of the complement $X-\cup_i Z_i$, where $X$ is a smooth compact algebraic variety and $\{Z_i\}$ is a collection of subvarieties such that all set-theoretical intersections are smooth. The model is given in terms of the cohomology of all intersections of $Z_i$'s, and the natural maps induced by the inclusions. Our construction is inspired by the work of J.Morgan, who covered the fundamental case where $\{Z_i\}$ is a divisor with normal crossings, and it is built on developments of the theory of mixed Hodge diagrams by Cirici-Horel. We avoid any explicit reduction to the normal crossings divisor case, e.g. via the wonderful compactification of De Concini-Procesi. As an application of our approach we recover and generalize a few separate results on the complements of arrangements in a uniform manner. These include the Kritz-Totaro model for graph configuration spaces, Yuzvinsky's model for affine subspace arrangements and Dupont's model for complements of hypersurfaces with hyperplane-like intersection.

Virasoro constraints on moduli of sheaves and vertex algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
In enumerative geometry, Virasoro constraints were first conjectured in Gromov-Witten theory with many new recent developments in the sheaf theoretic context. In this paper, we rephrase the sheaf-theoretic Virasoro constraints in terms of primary states coming from a natural conformal vector in Joyce's vertex algebra. This shows that Virasoro constraints are preserved under wall-crossing. As an application, we prove the conjectural Virasoro constraints for moduli spaces of torsion-free sheaves on any curve and on surfaces with only $(p,p)$ cohomology classes by reducing the statements to the rank 1 case.
