Evaluation of Euler Number of Complex Grassmann Manifold G(k, N) via Mathai-Quillen Formalism
Published in Journal of Geometry and Physics 180C (2022) 104623 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we provide a recipe for computing Euler number of Grassmann manifold G(k,N) by using Mathai-Quillen formalism (MQ formalism) and Atiyah-Jeffrey construction. Especially, we construct path-integral representation of Euler number of G(k,N). Our model corresponds to a finite dimensional toy-model of topological Yang-Mills theory which motivated Atiyah-Jeffrey construction. As a by-product, we construct free fermion realization of cohomology ring of G(k,N).

Back stable K-theory Schubert calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the back stable $K$-theory Schubert calculus of the infinite flag variety. We define back stable (double) Grothendieck polynomials and double $K$-Stanley functions and establish coproduct expansion formulae. Applying work of Weigandt, we extend our previous results on bumpless pipedreams from cohomology to $K$-theory. We study finiteness and positivity properties of the ring of back stable Grothendieck polynomials, and divided difference operators in $K$-homology.

Gromov-Witten theory and invariants of matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use techniques from Gromov-Witten theory to construct new invariants of matroids taking value in the Chow groups of spaces of rational curves in the permutohedral toric variety. When the matroid is realizable by a complex hyperplane arrangement, our invariants coincide with virtual fundamental classes used to define the logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory of wonderful models of arrangement complements, for any logarithmic structure supported on the wonderful boundary. When the boundary is empty, this implies that the quantum cohomology ring of a hyperplane arrangement's wonderful model is a combinatorial invariant, i.e., it depends only on the matroid. When the boundary divisor is maximal, we use toric intersection theory to convert the virtual fundamental class into a balanced weighted fan in a vector space, having the expected dimension. We explain how the associated Gromov-Witten theory is completely encoded by intersections with this weighted fan. We include a number of questions whose positive answers would lead to a well-defined Gromov-Witten theory of non-realizable matroids.

Bumpless pipe dreams encode Gröbner geometry of Schubert polynomials
In their study of infinite flag varieties, Lam, Lee, and Shimozono (2021) introduced bumpless pipe dreams in a new combinatorial formula for double Schubert polynomials. These polynomials are the TxT-equivariant cohomology classes of matrix Schubert varieties and of their flat degenerations. We give diagonal term orders with respect to which bumpless pipe dreams index the irreducible components of diagonal Gröbner degenerations of matrix Schubert varieties, counted with scheme-theoretic multiplicity. This indexing was conjectured by Hamaker, Pechenik, and Weigandt (2022). This result establishes that bumpless pipe dreams are dual to and as geometrically natural as classical pipe dreams, for which an analogous anti-diagonal theory was developed by Knutson and Miller (2005).

Multipath cohomology of directed graphs
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 24 (2024) 4373-4421 • View PublicationBIB
This work is part of a series of papers focusing on multipath cohomology of directed graphs. Multipath cohomology is defined as the (poset) homology of the path poset -- i.e., the poset of disjoint simple paths in a graph -- with respect to a certain functor. This construction is essentially equivalent, albeit more computable, to taking the higher limits of said functor on (a certain modification of) the path poset. We investigate the functorial properties of multipath cohomology. We provide a number of sample computations, show that the multipath cohomology does not vanish on trees, and that, when evaluated at the coherently oriented polygon, it recovers Hochschild homology. Finally, we use the same techniques employed to study the functoriality to investigate the connection with the chromatic homology of (undirected) graphs introduced by L. Helme-Guizon and Y. Rong.
Generalized splines on graphs with two labels and polynomial splines on cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
Generalized splines are an algebraic combinatorial framework that generalizes and unifies various established concepts across different fields, most notably the classical notion of splines and the topological notion of GKM theory. The former consists of piecewise polynomials on a combinatorial geometric object like a polytope, whose polynomial pieces agree to a specified degree of differentiability. The latter is a graph-theoretic construction of torus-equivariant cohomology that Shareshian and Wachs used to reformulate the well-known Stanley$\unicode{x2013}$Stembridge conjecture, a reformulation that was recently proven to hold by Brosnan and Chow and independently Guay-Paquet. This paper focuses on the theory of generalized splines. A generalized spline on a graph $G$ with each edge labeled by an ideal in a ring $R$ consists of a vertex-labeling by elements of $R$ so that the labels on adjacent vertices $u, v$ differ by an element of the ideal associated to the edge $uv$. We study the $R$-module of generalized splines and produce minimum generating sets for several families of graphs and edge-labelings: $1)$ for all graphs when the set of possible edge-labelings consists of at most two finitely-generated ideals, and $2)$ for cycles when the set of possible edge-labelings consists of principal ideals generated by elements of the form $(ax+by)^2$ in the polynomial ring $\mathbb{C}[x,y]$. We obtain the generators using a constructive algorithm that is suitable for computer implementation and give several applications, including contextualizing several results in the theory of classical (analytic) splines.

A natural basis for intersection numbers
We advertise elementary symmetric polynomials $e_i$ as the natural basis for generating series $A_{g,n}$ of intersection numbers of genus g and n marked points. Closed formulae for $A_{g,n}$ are known for genera $0$ and $1$ -- this approach provides formulae for $g = 2,3,4$, together with an algorithm to compute the formula for any g. The claimed naturality of the e_i basis relies in the unexpected vanishing of some coefficients with a clear pattern: we conjecture that $A_{g,n}$ can have at most $g$ factors $e_i$, with $i>1$, in its expansion. This observation promotes a paradigm for more general cohomology classes. As an application of the conjecture, we find new integral representations of $A_{g,n}$, which recover expressions for the Weil-Petersson volumes in terms of Bessel functions.

A Generalization of Deodhar's Framework for Questions in Kazhdan-Lusztig Theory
We make progress on a question of Skandera by showing that a product of Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements indexed by maximal elements of parabolic subgroups admits a Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element as a quotient arising from operations in the Schur algebroid if and only if the sequence of parabolic subgroups satisfy both a rigidity condition and a combinatorial criterion. For Weyl groups, the rigidity condition specializes to a necessary condition for smallness of Gelfand-MacPherson resolutions. For Schubert varieties indexed by 4231-avoiding permutations, we derive a stronger necessary condition that, up to an appropriate equivalence, is satisfied by at most one Gelfand-MacPherson resolution, and exactly one if and only if 45312 is also avoided. Moreover, we apply the combinatorial criterion to prove the (essentially unique) resolution is small when 34512 and 45123 are likewise avoided. We develop the combinatorial criterion as part of a generalization of Deodhar's combinatorial setting for questions in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory, which in the case of Weyl groups we show captures the Byałynicki-Birula decompositions of Gelfand-MacPherson resolutions. In particular, we obtain new combinatorial interpretations of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, new algorithms for computing them, and in the case of Weyl groups, an equivalence of the existence of small Gelfand-MacPherson resolutions with that of certain factorizations and generating-function interpretations of the Poincaré polynomial of intersection cohomology of the Schubert variety.

Configuration spaces of disks in a strip, twisted algebras, persistence, and other stories
Published in Geom. Topol. 28 (2024) 641-699 • View PublicationBIB
We give $\mathbb{Z}$-bases for the homology and cohomology of the configuration space $\operatorname{config}(n,w)$ of $n$ unit disks in an infinite strip of width $w$, first studied by Alpert, Kahle and MacPherson. We also study the way these spaces evolve both as $n$ increases (using the framework of representation stability) and as $w$ increases (using the framework of persistent homology). Finally, we include some results about the cup product in the cohomology and about the configuration space of unordered disks.

Permutation module decomposition of the second cohomology of a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety
Published • View PublicationBIB
Regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties admit actions of associated Weyl groups on their cohomology space of each degree. In this paper, we consider the module structure of the cohomology spaces of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties of type $A$. We define a subset of the Bialynicki-Birula basis of the cohomology space so that they become a module generator set of the cohomology module of each degree. We then use those generators to construct permutation submodules of the degree two cohomology module and show that they form a permutation module decomposition. Our construction is consistent with a known combinatorial result by Chow on chromatic quasisymmetric functions.

GKM graph locally modeled by $T^{n}\times S^{1}$-action on $T^{*}\mathbb{C}^{n}$ and its graph equivariant cohomology
Published in Fields Institute Communications Volume 89, Toric Topology and Polyhedral Products, pp179--238 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a class of labeled graphs (with legs) which contains two classes of GKM graphs of $4n$-dimensional manifolds with $T^{n}\times S^{1}$-actions, i.e., GKM graphs of the toric hyperK${\rm\ddot{a}}$hler manifolds and of the cotangent bundles of toric manifolds. Under some conditions, the graph equivariant cohomology ring of such a labeled graph is computed. We also give a module basis of the graph equivariant cohomology by using a shelling structure of such a labeled graph and study their multiplicative structure.
Systolic inequalities for the number of vertices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Inspired by the classical Riemannian systolic inequality of Gromov we present a combinatorial analogue providing a lower bound on the number of vertices of a simplicial complex in terms of its edge-path systole. Similarly to the Riemannian case, where the inequality holds under a topological assumption of "essentiality", our proofs rely on a combinatorial analogue of that assumption. Under a stronger assumption, expressed in terms of cohomology cup-length, we improve our results quantitatively. We also illustrate our methods in the continuous setting, generalizing and improving quantitatively the Minkowski principle of Balacheff and Karam; a corollary of this result is the extension of the Guth--Nakamura cup-length systolic bound from manifolds to complexes.

Conic decomposition of a toric variety and its application to cohomology
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of a \emph{conic sequence} of a convex polytope. It is a way of building up a polytope starting from a vertex and attaching faces one by one with certain regulations. We apply this to a toric variety to obtain an iterated cofibration structure on it. This allows us to prove several vanishing results in the rational cohomology of a toric variety and to calculate Poincaré polynomials for a large class of singular toric varieties.

A $q$-deformation of an algebra of Klyachko and Macdonald's reduced word formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
There is a striking similarity between Macdonald's reduced word formula and the image of the Schubert class in the cohomology ring of the permutahedral variety $\mathrm{Perm}_n$ as computed by Klyachko. Toward understanding this better, we undertake an in-depth study of a $q$-deformation of the $\mathbb{S}_n$-invariant part of the rational cohomology ring of $\mathrm{Perm}_n$, which we call the $q$-Klyachko algebra. We uncover intimate links between expansions in the basis of squarefree monomials in this algebra and various notions in algebraic combinatorics, thereby connecting seemingly unrelated results by finding a common ground to study them. Our main results are as follows. 1) A $q$-analog of divided symmetrization ($q$-DS) using Yang-Baxter elements in the Hecke algebra. It is a linear form that picks up coefficients in the squarefree basis. 2) A relation between $q$-DS and the ideal of quasisymmetric polynomials involving work of Aval--Bergeron--Bergeron. 3) A family of polynomials in $q$ with nonnegative integral coefficients that specialize to Postnikov's mixed Eulerian numbers when $q=1$. We refer to these new polynomials as remixed Eulerian numbers. For $q>0$, their normalized versions occur as probabilities in the internal diffusion limited aggregation (IDLA) stochastic process. 4) A lift of Macdonald's reduced word identity in the $q$-Klyachko algebra. 5) The Schubert expansion of the Chow class of the standard split Deligne--Lusztig variety in type $A$, when $q$ is a prime power.

Infinite flags and Schubert polynomials
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e36 • View PublicationBIB
We study Schubert polynomials using geometry of infinite-dimensional flag varieties and degeneracy loci. Applications include Graham-positivity of coefficients appearing in equivariant coproduct formulas and expansions of back-stable and enriched Schubert polynomials. We also construct an embedding of the type C flag variety, and study the corresponding pullback map on (equivariant) cohomology rings.

Permutation actions on Quiver Grassmannians for the equioriented cycle via GKM-Theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
In previous work we equipped quiver Grassmannians for nilpotent representations of the equioriented cycle with an action of an algebraic torus. We show here that the equivariant cohomology ring is acted upon by a product of symmetric groups and we investigate this permutation action via GKM techniques. In the case of (type A) flag varieties, or Schubert varieties therein, we recover Tymoczko's results on permutation representations.
Toric orbifolds associated with partitioned weight polytopes in classical types

Given a root system $Φ$ of type $A_n$, $B_n$, $C_n$, or $D_n$ in Euclidean space $E$, let $W$ be the associated Weyl group. For a point $p \in E$ not orthogonal to any of the roots in $Φ$, we consider the $W$-permutohedron $P_W$, which is the convex hull of the $W$-orbit of $p$. The representation of $W$ on the rational cohomology ring $H^\ast(X_Φ)$ of the toric variety $X_Φ$ associated to (the normal fan to) $P_W$ has been studied by various authors. Let $\{s_1,\ldots,s_n\}$ be a complete set of simple reflections in $W$. For $K \subseteq [n]$, let $W_K$ be the standard parabolic subgroup of $W$ generated by $\{s_k:k \in K\}$. We show that the fixed subring $H^\ast(X_Φ)^{W_K}$ is isomorphic to the cohomology ring of the toric variety $X_Φ(K)$ associated to a polytope obtained by intersecting $P_W$ with half-spaces bounded by reflecting hyperplanes for the given generators of $W_K$. By a result of Balibanu--Crooks, the cohomology rings $H^\ast(X_Φ(K))$ are isomorphic with cohomology rings of certain regular Hessenberg varieties.

Homology of tropical fans
The aim of this paper is to study homological properties of tropical fans and to propose a notion of smoothness in tropical geometry, which goes beyond matroids and their Bergman fans and which leads to an enrichment of the category of smooth tropical varieties. Among the resulting applications, we prove the Hodge isomorphism theorem which asserts that the Chow rings of smooth unimodular tropical fans are isomorphic to the tropical cohomology rings of their corresponding canonical compactifications, and prove a slightly weaker statement for any unimodular fan. We furthermore introduce a notion of shellability for tropical fans and show that shellable tropical fans are smooth and thus enjoy all the nice homological properties of smooth tropical fans. Several other interesting properties for tropical fans are shown to be shellable. Finally, we obtain a generalization, both in the tropical and in the classical setting, of the pioneering work of Feichtner-Yuzvinsky and De Concini-Procesi on the cohomology ring of wonderful compactifications of complements of hyperplane arrangements. The results in this paper form the basis for our subsequent works on Hodge theory for tropical and non-Archimedean varieties.
Geometry of Peterson Schubert calculus in type A and left-right diagrams

We introduce an additive basis of the integral cohomology ring of the Peterson variety which reflects the geometry of certain subvarieties of the Peterson variety. We explain the positivity of the structure constants from a geometric viewpoint, and provide a manifestly positive combinatorial formula for them. We also prove that our basis coincides with the additive basis introduced by Harada-Tymoczko.

The isomorphism problem for Schubert varieties
Schubert varieties in the full flag variety of Kac-Moody type are indexed by elements of the corresponding Weyl group. We give a practical criterion for when two such Schubert varieties (from potentially different flag varieties) are isomorphic, in terms of the Cartan matrix and reduced words for the indexing Weyl group elements. As a corollary, we show that two such Schubert varieties are isomorphic if and only if there is an isomorphism between their integral cohomology rings that preserves the Schubert basis.
