Schubert polynomials form a basis of all polynomials and appear in the study of cohomology rings of flag manifolds. The vanishing problem for Schubert polynomials asks if a coefficient of a Schubert polynomial is zero. We give a tableau criterion to solve this problem, from which we deduce the first polynomial time algorithm. These results are obtained from new characterizations of the Schubitope, a generalization of the permutahedron defined for any subset of the n x n grid. In contrast, we show that computing these coefficients explicitly is #P-complete.
The Stembridge Equality for Skew Stable Grothendieck Polynomials and Skew Dual Stable Grothendieck Polynomials

The Schur polynomials $s_λ$ are essential in understanding the representation theory of the general linear group. They also describe the cohomology ring of the Grassmannians. For $ρ= (n, n-1, \dots, 1)$ a staircase shape and $μ\subseteq ρ$ a subpartition, the Stembridge equality states that $s_{ρ/μ} = s_{ρ/μ^T}$. This equality provides information about the symmetry of the cohomology ring. The stable Grothendieck polynomials $G_λ$, and the dual stable Grothendieck polynomials $g_λ$, developed by Buch, Lam, and Pylyavskyy, are variants of the Schur polynomials and describe the $K$-theory of the Grassmannians. Using the Hopf algebra structure of the ring of symmetric functions and a generalized Littlewood-Richardson rule, we prove that $G_{ρ/μ} = G_{ρ/μ^T}$ and $g_{ρ/μ} = g_{ρ/μ^T}$, the analogues of the Stembridge equality for the skew stable and skew dual stable Grothendieck polynomials.
Schubert puzzles and integrability II: multiplying motivic Segre classes

In Schubert Puzzles and Integrability I we proved several "puzzle rules" for computing products of Schubert classes in K-theory (and sometimes equivariant K-theory) of d-step flag varieties. The principal tool was "quantum integrability", in several variants of the Yang--Baxter equation; this let us recognize the Schubert structure constants as q->0 limits of certain matrix entries in products of R- (and other) matrices of quantized affine algebra representations. In the present work we give direct cohomological interpretations of those same matrix entries but at finite q: they compute products of "motivic Segre classes", closely related to K-theoretic Maulik--Okounkov stable classes living on the cotangent bundles of the flag varieties. Without q->0, we avoid some divergences that blocked fuller understanding of d=3,4. The puzzle computations are then explained (in cohomology onlyin this work, not K-theory) in terms of Lagrangian convolutions between Nakajima quiver varieties. More specifically, the conormal bundle to the diagonal inclusion of a flag variety factors through a quiver variety that is not a cotangent bundle, and it is on that intermediate quiver variety that the R-matrix calculation occurs.

Let $Γ$ be a finite graph and let $A(Γ)$ be the corresponding right-angled Artin group. We characterize the Hamiltonicity of $Γ$ via the structure of the cohomology algebra of $A(Γ)$. In doing so, we define and develop a new canonical graph associated to a matrix, which as a consequence provides a novel perspective on the matrix determinant.
On the depth of binomial edge ideals of graphs

Let $G$ be a graph on the vertex set $[n]$ and $J_G$ the associated binomial edge ideal in the polynomial ring $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n,y_1,\ldots,y_n]$. In this paper we investigate the depth of binomial edge ideals. More precisely, we first establish a combinatorial lower bound for the depth of $S/J_G$ based on some graphical invariants of $G$. Next, we combinatorially characterize all binomial edge ideals $J_G$ with $\mathrm{depth}\hspace{1.2mm}S/J_G=5$. To achieve this goal, we associate a new poset $\mathcal{M}_G$ with the binomial edge ideal of $G$, and then elaborate some topological properties of certain subposets of $\mathcal{M}_G$ in order to compute some local cohomology modules of $S/J_G$.
A transitivity result for ad-nilpotent ideals in type A

The paper considers subspaces of the strictly upper triangular matrices, which are stable under Lie bracket with any upper triangular matrix. These subspaces are called ad-nilpotent ideals and there are Catalan number of such subspaces. Each ad-nilpotent ideal meets a unique largest nilpotent orbit in the Lie algebra of all matrices. The main result of the paper is that under an equivalence relation on ad-nilpotent ideals studied by Mizuno and others, the equivalence classes are the ad-nilpotent ideals with the same largest nilpotent orbit. We include two applications of the result, one to the higher vanishing of cohomology groups of vector bundles on the flag variety and another to the Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in the affine Weyl group of the symmetric group. Finally, some combinatorial results are discussed.
Toward permutation bases in the equivariant cohomology rings of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties

Recent work of Shareshian and Wachs, Brosnan and Chow, and Guay-Paquet connects the well-known Stanley-Stembridge conjecture in combinatorics to the dot action of the symmetric group $S_n$ on the cohomology rings $H^*(Hess(S,h))$ of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties. In particular, in order to prove the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture, it suffices to construct (for any Hessenberg function $h$) a permutation basis of $H^*(Hess(S,h))$ whose elements have stabilizers isomorphic to Young subgroups. In this manuscript we give several results which contribute toward this goal. Specifically, in some special cases, we give a new, purely combinatorial construction of classes in the $T$-equivariant cohomology ring $H^*_T(Hess(S,h))$ which form permutation bases for subrepresentations in $H^*_T(Hess(S,h))$. Moreover, from the definition of our classes it follows that the stabilizers are isomorphic to Young subgroups. Our constructions use a presentation of the $T$-equivariant cohomology rings $H^*_T(Hess(S,h))$ due to Goresky, Kottwitz, and MacPherson. The constructions presented in this manuscript generalize past work of Abe-Horiguchi-Masuda, Chow, and Cho-Hong-Lee.
A categorification for the signed chromatic polynomial

By coloring a signed graph by signed colors, one obtains the signed chromatic polynomial of the signed graph. For each signed graph we construct graded cohomology groups whose graded Euler characteristic yields the signed chromatic polynomial of the signed graph. We show that the cohomology groups satisfy a long exact sequence which corresponds to signed deletion-contraction rule. This work is motivated by Helme-Guizon and Rong's construction of the categorification for the chromatic polynomial of unsigned graphs.
Tropical Clemens-Schmid sequence and existence of tropical cycles with a given cohomology class
This is a sequel to our work in tropical Hodge theory. Our aim here is to prove a tropical analogue of the Clemens-Schmid exact sequence in asymptotic Hodge theory. As an application of this result, we prove the tropical Hodge conjecture for smooth projective tropical varieties which are rationally triangulable. This provides a partial answer to a question of Kontsevich who suggested the validity of the tropical Hodge conjecture could be used as a test for the validity of the Hodge conjecture.
The holonomy Lie algebra of a matroid
We will start from the beginning and define a matroid and its Orlik-Solomon algebra and holonomy Lie algebra, but first we give some background from topology and cohomology. A (central) hyperplane arrangement is a finite number of subspaces of codimension one in a finite dimensional vector space over R, C or even finite fields. The space X which is the complement of the union of the hyperplanes has interesting properties. If you consider R^n the cohomology is however rather trivial, there is just an H^0, since X is a disjoint union of contractible sets. But it is not a trivial task to compute |H^0|. The way to do it is to consider the intersection lattice of the hyperplanes and compute its Möbius function. The result is that the number of components is the sum of the absolut values of the Möbius function (Zaslavsky 1975).

We relate the mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology of open positroid varieties (in particular, their Betti numbers over $\mathbb{C}$ and point counts over $\mathbb{F}_q$) to Khovanov--Rozansky homology of associated links. We deduce that the mixed Hodge polynomials of top-dimensional open positroid varieties are given by rational $q,t$-Catalan numbers. Via the curious Lefschetz property of cluster varieties, this implies the $q,t$-symmetry and unimodality properties of rational $q,t$-Catalan numbers. We show that the $q,t$-symmetry phenomenon is a manifestation of Koszul duality for category $\mathcal{O}$, and discuss relations with open Richardson varieties and extension groups of Verma modules.
On the Top-Weight Rational Cohomology of $A_g$

We compute the top-weight rational cohomology of $A_g$ for $g=5$, $6$, and $7$, and we give some vanishing results for the top-weight rational cohomology of $A_8, A_9,$ and $ A_{10}$. When $g=5$ and $g=7$, we exhibit nonzero cohomology groups of $A_g$ in odd degree, thus answering a question highlighted by Grushevsky. Our methods develop the relationship between the top-weight cohomology of $A_g$ and the homology of the link of the moduli space of principally polarized tropical abelian varieties of rank $g$. To compute the latter we use the Voronoi complexes used by Elbaz-Vincent-Gangl-Soulé. Our computations give natural candidates for compactly supported cohomology classes of $A_g$ in weight $0$ that produce the stable cohomology classes of the Satake compactification of $A_g$ in weight $0$, under the Gysin spectral sequence for the latter space.
Pre-Calabi-Yau algebras and noncommutative calculus on higher cyclic Hochschild cohomology
We prove $L_{\infty}$-formality for the higher cyclic Hochschild complex $\chH$ over free associative algebra or path algebra of a quiver. The $\chH$ complex is introduced as an appropriate tool for the definition of pre-Calabi-Yau structure. We show that cohomologies of this complex are pure in case of free algebras (path algebras), concentrated in degree zero. It serves as a main ingredient for the formality proof. For any smooth algebra we choose a small qiso subcomplex in the higher cyclic Hochschild complex, which gives rise to a calculus of highly noncommutative monomials, we call them $ξδ$-monomials. The Lie structure on this subcomplex is combinatorially described in terms of $ξδ$-monomials. This subcomplex and a basis of $ξδ$-monomials in combination with arguments from Groebner bases theory serves for the cohomology calculations of the higher cyclic Hochschild complex. The language of $ξδ$-monomials in particular allows an interpretation of pre-Calabi-Yau structure as a noncommutative Poisson structure.

This paper studies, for a positive integer $m$, the subalgebra of the cohomology ring of the complex Grassmannians generated by the elements of degree at most $m$. We build in two ways upon a conjecture for the Hilbert series of this subalgebra due to Reiner and Tudose. The first reinterprets it in terms of the operation of $k$-conjugation, suggesting two conjectural bases for the subalgebras that would imply their conjecture. The second introduces an analogous conjecture for the cohomology of Lagrangian Grassmannians.
An equivariant quantum Pieri rule for the Grassmannian on cylindric shapes

The quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian is determined by the quantum Pieri rule for multiplying by Schubert classes indexed by row or column-shaped partitions. We provide a direct equivariant generalization of Postnikov's quantum Pieri rule for the Grassmannian in terms of cylindric shapes, complementing related work of Gorbounov and Korff in quantum integrable systems. The equivariant terms in our Graham-positive rule simply encode the positions of all possible addable boxes within one cylindric skew diagram. As such, unlike the earlier equivariant quantum Pieri rule of Huang and Li and known equivariant quantum Littlewood-Richardson rules, our formula does not require any calculations in a different Grassmannian or two-step flag variety.
Comodule Structures, Equivariant Hopf Structures, and Generalized Schubert Polynomials
In this article, the comodule structure of Chow rings of Flag manifolds $\operatorname{CH}(G/B)$ is described by Schubert cells. Its equivariant version gives rise to a Hopf structure of the equivariant cohomology of flag manifolds $H^*_B(G/B)$. We get two identities of generalized Schubert polynomials as explanations of the geometric facts.
A combinatorial approach to first degree cohomology of Specht modules
Using purely combinatorial methods we calculate the first degree cohomology of Specht modules indexed by two part partitions over fields of characteristic $p\ge 3$. These combinatorial methods also allow us to obtain an explicit description of all of the non-split extensions of the Specht module, $S^λ$, by the trivial module. Applying this work to partitions with more than two parts we are able to give an entirely combinatorial proof of the bound on the dimension of the first degree cohomology given by work of Donkin and Geranios. We also obtain as a corollary a result of Weber giving a far reaching condition determining partitions for which the first cohomology of the Specht module is trivial.
Singular Hodge theory for combinatorial geometries
We introduce the intersection cohomology module of a matroid and prove that it satisfies Poincaré duality, the hard Lefschetz theorem, and the Hodge-Riemann relations. As applications, we obtain proofs of Dowling and Wilson's Top-Heavy conjecture and the nonnegativity of the coefficients of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for all matroids.
Extra-fine sheaves and interaction decompositions
We introduce an original notion of extra-fine sheaf on a topological space, and a variant (hyper-extra-fine) for which Čech cohomology in strictly positive degree vanishes. We provide a characterization of such sheaves when the topological space is a partially ordered set (poset) equipped with the Alexandrov topology. Then we further specialize our results to some sheaves of vector spaces and injective maps, where extra-fineness is (essentially) equivalent to the decomposition of the sheaf into a direct sum of subfunctors, known as interaction decomposition, and can be expressed by a sum-intersection condition. We use these results to compute the dimension of the space of global sections when the presheaves are freely generated over a functor of sets, generalizing classical counting formulae for the number of solutions of the linearized marginal problem (Kellerer and Matúš). We finish with a comparison theorem between the Čech cohomology associated to a covering and the topos cohomology of the poset with coefficients in the presheaf, which is also the cohomology of a cosimplicial local system over the nerve of the poset. For that, we give a detailed treatment of cosimplicial local systems on simplicial sets. The appendixes present presheaves, sheaves and Čech cohomology, and their application to the marginal problem.
The Ceresa class: tropical, topological, and algebraic

The Ceresa cycle is an algebraic cycle attached to a smooth algebraic curve with a marked point, which is trivial when the curve is hyperelliptic with a marked Weierstrass point. The image of the Ceresa cycle under a certain cycle class map provides a class in étale cohomology called the Ceresa class. Describing the Ceresa class explicitly for non-hyperelliptic curves is in general not easy. We present a "combinatorialization" of this problem, explaining how to define a Ceresa class for a tropical algebraic curve, and also for a topological surface endowed with a multiset of commuting Dehn twists (where it is related to the Morita cocycle on the mapping class group). We explain how these are related to the Ceresa class of a smooth algebraic curve over $\mathbb{C}(\!(t)\!)$, and show that the Ceresa class in each of these settings is torsion.
