An orientation of a graph $G$ is proper if any two adjacent vertices have different indegrees. The proper orientation number $\overrightarrowχ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum of the maximum indegree, taken over all proper orientations of $G$. In this paper, we show that a connected bipartite graph may be properly oriented even if we are only allowed to control the orientation of a specific set of edges, namely, the edges of a spanning tree and all the edges incident to one of its leaves. As a consequence of this result, we prove that 3-connected planar bipartite graphs have proper orientation number at most 6. Additionally, we give a short proof that $\overrightarrowχ(G) \leq 4$, when $G$ is a tree and this proof leads to a polynomial-time algorithm to proper orient trees within this bound.

An eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a graph is said to be \emph{main} if the all-1 vector is not orthogonal to the associated eigenspace. In this work, we approach the main eigenvalues of some graphs. The graphs with exactly two main eigenvalues are considered and a relation between those main eigenvalues is presented. The particular case of harmonic graphs is analyzed and they are characterized in terms of their main eigenvalues without any restriction on its combinatorial structure. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph $G$ to have $-1-λ_{\min}$ as an eigenvalue of its complement, where $λ_{\min}$ denotes the least eigenvalue of $G$. Also, we prove that among connected bipartite graphs, $K_{r,r}$ is the unique graph for which the index of the complement is equal to $-1-λ_{\min}$. Finally, we characterize all paths and all double stars (trees with diameter three) for which the smallest eigenvalue is non-main. Main eigenvalues of paths and double stars are identified.

Let G be a connected bipartite graph with color classes E and V and root polytope Q. Regarding the hypergraph (V,E) induced by G, we prove that its interior polynomial is equivalent to the Ehrhart polynomial of Q, which in turn is equivalent to the h-vector of any triangulation of Q. It follows that the interior polynomials of (V,E) and its transpose (E,V) agree.
When G is a complete bipartite graph, our result recovers a well known hypergeometric identity due to Saalschütz. It also implies that certain extremal coefficients in the Homfly polynomial of a special alternating link can be read off of an associated Floer homology group.
Solution to a conjecture on the proper connection number of graphs
A path in an edge-colored graph is called a proper path if no two adjacent edges of the path receive the same color. For a connected graph $G$, the proper connection number $pc(G)$ of $G$ is defined as the minimum number of colors needed to color its edges, so that every pair of distinct vertices of $G$ is connected by at least one proper path in $G$. Recently, Li and Magnant in [Theory Appl. Graphs 0(1)(2015), Art.2] posed the following conjecture: If $G$ is a connected noncomplete graph of order $n \geq 5$ and minimum degree $δ(G) \geq n/4$, then $pc(G)=2$. In this paper, we show that this conjecture is true except for two small graphs on 7 and 8 vertices, respectively. As a byproduct we obtain that if $G$ is a connected bipartite graph of order $n\geq 4$ with $δ(G)\geq \frac{n+6}{8}$, then $pc(G)=2$.

Since Sedlá$\breve{\mbox{c}}$ek introduced the notion of magic labeling of a graph in 1963, a variety of magic labelings of a graph have been defined and studied. In this paper, we study consecutive edge magic labelings of a connected bipartite graph. We make a very useful observation that there are only four possible values of $b$ for which a connected bipartite graph has a $b$-edge consecutive magic labeling. On the basis of this fundamental result, we deduce various interesting results on consecutive edge magic labelings of bipartite graphs, especially caterpillars and lobsters, which extends the results given by Sugeng and Miller.

The regular number of a graph G denoted by reg(G) is the minimum number of subsets into which the edge set of G can be partitioned so that the subgraph induced by each subset is regular. In this work we answer to the problem posed as an open problem in A. Ganesan et al. (2012) [3] about the complexity of determining the regular number of graphs. We show that computation of the regular number for connected bipartite graphs is NP-hard. Furthermore, we show that, determining whether reg(G) = 2 for a given connected 3-colorable graph G is NP-complete. Also, we prove that a new variant of the Monotone Not-All-Equal 3-Sat problem is NP-complete.

Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $N$. The normalized Laplacian Estrada index of $G$ is defined as $NEE(G)=\sum_{i=1}^Ne^{λ_i}$, where $λ_1,λ_2,\cdots,λ_N$ are the normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$. In this paper, we give a tight lower bound for $NEE$ of general graphs. We also calculate $NEE$ for a class of treelike fractals, which contain some classical chemical trees as special cases. It is shown that $NEE$ scales linearly with the order of the fractal, in line with a best possible lower bound for connected bipartite graphs.

For a graph $G$ of order $n$ and with eigenvalues $λ_1\geqslant\cdots\geqslantλ_n$, the HL-index $R(G)$ is defined as $R(G) ={\max}\left\{|λ_{\lfloor(n+1)/2\rfloor}|, |λ_{\lceil(n+1)/2\rceil}|\right\}.$ We show that for every connected bipartite graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ\geqslant3$, $R(G)\leqslant\sqrt{Δ-2}$ unless $G$ is the the incidence graph of a projective plane of order $Δ-1$. We also present an approach through graph covering to construct infinite families of bipartite graphs with large HL-index.

It is proved that the median eigenvalues of every connected bipartite graph $G$ of maximum degree at most three belong to the interval $[-1,1]$ with a single exception of the Heawood graph, whose median eigenvalues are $\pm\sqrt{2}$. Moreover, if $G$ is not isomorphic to the Heawood graph, then a positive fraction of its median eigenvalues lie in the interval $[-1,1]$. This surprising result has been motivated by the problem about HOMO-LUMO separation that arises in mathematical chemistry.

Let $H$ be a connected bipartite graph, whose signless Laplacian matrix is $Q(H)$. Suppose that the bipartition of $H$ is $(S,T)$ and that $x$ is the eigenvector of the smallest eigenvalue of $Q(H)$. It is well-known that $x$ is positive and constant on $S$, and negative and constant on $T$.
The resilience of the sign pattern of $x$ under addition of edges into the subgraph induced by either $S$ or $T$ is investigated and a number of cases in which the sign pattern of $x$ persists are described.

Let $G$ be a graph and $\mathcal {S}$ be a subset of $Z$. A vertex-coloring $\mathcal {S}$-edge-weighting of $G$ is an assignment of weight $s$ by the elements of $\mathcal {S}$ to each edge of $G$ so that adjacent vertices have different sums of incident edges weights.
It was proved that every 3-connected bipartite graph admits a vertex-coloring $\{1,2\}$-edge-weighting (Lu, Yu and Zhang, (2011) \cite{LYZ}). In this paper, we show that the following result: if a 3-edge-connected bipartite graph $G$ with minimum degree $δ$ contains a vertex $u\in V(G)$ such that $d_G(u)=δ$ and $G-u$ is connected, then $G$ admits a vertex-coloring $\mathcal {S}$-edge-weighting for $\mathcal {S}\in \{\{0,1\},\{1,2\}\}$. In particular, we show that every 2-connected and 3-edge-connected bipartite graph admits a vertex-coloring $\mathcal {S}$-edge-weighting for $\mathcal {S}\in \{\{0,1\},\{1,2\}\}$. The bound is sharp, since there exists a family of infinite bipartite graphs which are 2-connected and do not admit vertex-coloring $\{1,2\}$-edge-weightings or vertex-coloring $\{0,1\}$-edge-weightings.
Bipartite graphs are weak antimagic
The \emph{Antimagic Graph Conjecture} asserts that every connected graph $G = (V, E)$ except $K_2$ admits an edge labeling such that each label $1, 2, ..., |E|$ is used exactly once and the sums of the labels on all edges incident with a given node are distinct. We study an associated counting function (replacing the upper bound on the possible labels by a variable) and prove that a variant of this counting function, when we do not require the labels to be distinct, is a polynomial if $G$ is bipartite. As a consequence, we show that every connected bipartite graph $G = (V, E)$ except $K_2$ admits a \emph{weakly} antimagic labeling, that is, each edge label is among $1, 2, ..., |E|$ (repetition allowed) and the sums of the labels on all edges incident with a given node are distinct. We also present a natural extension of these results to directed and bidirected graphs; this extension gives rise to a (bi-)directed version of the Antimagic Graph Conjecture, which might be of independent interest.
Notes on the sum of powers of the signless Laplacian eigenvalues of graphs
For a graph $G$ and a non-zero real number $α$, the graph invariant $S_α(G)$ is the sum of the $α^{th}$ power of the non-zero signless Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$. In this paper, we obtain the sharp bounds of $S_α(G)$ for a connected bipartite graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and a connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices having a connectivity less than or equal to $k$, respectively, and propose some open problems for future research.

Let H be a connected bipartite graph with n nodes and m edges. We give an O(nm) time algorithm to decide whether H is an interval bigraph. The best known algorithm has time complexity O(nm^6(m + n) \log n) and it was developed in 1997 [18]. Our approach is based on an ordering characterization of interval bigraphs introduced by Hell and Huang [13]. We transform the problem of finding the desired ordering to choosing strong components of a pair-digraph without creating conflicts. We make use of the structure of the pair-digraph as well as decomposition of bigraph H based on the special components of the pair-digraph. This way we make explicit what the difficult cases are and gain efficiency by isolating such situations.

Let X be an algebraic toric set in a projective space over a finite field. We study the vanishing ideal, I(X), of X and show some useful degree bounds for a minimal set of generators of I(X). We give an explicit description of a set of generators of I(X), when X is the algebraic toric set associated to an even cycle or to a connected bipartite graph with pairwise disjoint even cycles. In this case, a fomula for the regularity of I(X) is given. We show an upper bound for this invariant, when X is associated to a (not necessarily connected) bipartite graph. The upper bound is sharp if the graph is connected. We are able to show a formula for the length of the parameterized linear code associated with any graph, in terms of the number of bipartite and non-bipartite components.

The permanental polynomial of a graph $G$ is $π(G,x)\triangleq\mathrm{per}(xI-A(G))$. From the result that a bipartite graph $G$ admits an orientation $G^e$ such that every cycle is oddly oriented if and only if it contains no even subdivision of $K_{2,3}$, Yan and Zhang showed that the permanental polynomial of such a bipartite graph $G$ can be expressed as the characteristic polynomial of the skew adjacency matrix $A(G^e)$. In this paper we first prove that this equality holds only if the bipartite graph $G$ contains no even subdivision of $K_{2,3}$. Then we prove that such bipartite graphs are planar. Further we mainly show that a 2-connected bipartite graph contains no even subdivision of $K_{2,3}$ if and only if it is planar 1-cycle resonant. This implies that each cycle is oddly oriented in any Pfaffian orientation of a 2-connected bipartite graph containing no even subdivision of $K_{2,3}$. As applications, permanental polynomials for some types of bipartite graphs are computed.

A $k$-{\it edge-weighting} $w$ of a graph $G$ is an assignment of an integer weight, $w(e)\in \{1,\dots, k\}$, to each edge $e$. An edge weighting naturally induces a vertex coloring $c$ by defining $c(u)=\sum_{u\sim e} w(e)$ for every $u \in V(G)$. A $k$-edge-weighting of a graph $G$ is \emph{vertex-coloring} if the induced coloring $c$ is proper, i.e., $c(u) \neq c(v)$ for any edge $uv \in E(G)$.
Given a graph $G$ and a vertex coloring $c_0$, does there exist an edge-weighting such that the induced vertex coloring is $c_0$? We investigate this problem by considering edge-weightings defined on an abelian group.
It was proved that every 3-colorable graph admits a vertex-coloring $3$-edge-weighting \cite{KLT}. Does every 2-colorable graph (i.e., bipartite graphs) admit a vertex-coloring 2-edge-weighting? We obtain several simple sufficient conditions for graphs to be vertex-coloring 2-edge-weighting. In particular, we show that 3-connected bipartite graphs admit vertex-coloring 2-edge-weighting.
The complement of a connected bipartite graph is vertex decomposable
Associated to a simple undirected graph $G$ is a simplicial complex $Δ_G$ whose faces correspond to the independent sets of $G$. A graph $G$ is called vertex decomposable if $Δ_G$ is a vertex decomposable simplicial complex. We are interested in determining what families of graph have the property that the complement of $G$, denoted by $\overline{G}$, is vertex decomposable. We obtain the result that the complement of a connected bipartite graph is vertex decomposable and so it is Cohen-Macaulay due to pureness of $Δ_{\overline{G}}$.

Motivated by the bijection between Schnyder labelings of a plane triangulation and partitions of its inner edges into three trees, we look for binary labelings for quadrangulations (whose edges can be partitioned into two trees). Our labeling resembles many of the properties of Schnyder's one for triangulations: Apart from being in bijection with tree decompositions, paths in these trees allow to define the regions of a vertex such that counting faces in them yields an algorithm for embedding the quadrangulation, in this case on a~2-book. Furthermore, as Schnyder labelings have been extended to 3-connected plane graphs, we are able to extend our labeling from quadrangulations to a larger class of 2-connected bipartite graphs. Finally, we propose a binary labeling for Laman graphs.

Let $F$ be a family of connected bipartite graphs, each with at least three vertices. A proper vertex colouring of a graph $G$ with no bichromatic subgraph in $F$ is $\F$-free. The $F$-free chromatic number $χ(G,F)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of colours in an $F$-free colouring of $G$. For appropriate choices of $F$, several well-known types of colourings fit into this framework, including acyclic colourings, star colourings, and distance-2 colourings. This paper studies $F$-free colourings of the cartesian product of graphs.
Let $H$ be the cartesian product of the graphs $G_1,G_2,...,G_d$. Our main result establishes an upper bound on the $F$-free chromatic number of $H$ in terms of the maximum $F$-free chromatic number of the $G_i$ and the following number-theoretic concept. A set $S$ of natural numbers is $k$-multiplicative Sidon if $ax=by$ implies $a=b$ and $x=y$ whenever $x,y\in S$ and $1\leq a,b\leq k$. Suppose that $χ(G_i,F)\leq k$ and $S$ is a $k$-multiplicative Sidon set of cardinality $d$. We prove that $χ(H,F) \leq 1+2k\cdot\max S$. We then prove that the maximum density of a $k$-multiplicative Sidon set is $Θ(1/\log k)$. It follows that $χ(H,F) \leq O(dk\log k)$. We illustrate the method with numerous examples, some of which generalise or improve upon existing results in the literature.
