Chromatic numbers of Cayley graphs of abelian groups: Cases of small dimension and rank
A connected Cayley graph on an abelian group with a finite generating set $S$ can be represented by its Heuberger matrix, i.e., an integer matrix whose columns generate the group of relations between members of $S$. In a previous article, the authors laid the foundation for the use of Heuberger matrices to study chromatic numbers of abelian Cayley graphs. We call the number of rows in the Heuberger matrix the {\it dimension}, and the number of columns the {\it rank}. In this paper, we give precise numerical conditions that completely determine the chromatic number in all cases with dimension $1$; with rank $1$; and with dimension $\leq 3$ and rank $\leq 2$. For such a graph without loops, we show that it is $4$-colorable if and only if it does not contain a $5$-clique, and it is $3$-colorable if and only if it contains neither a diamond lanyard nor a $C_{13}(1,5)$, both of which we define herein. It is shown in another paper that as a special case of our theorem for dimension $3$ and rank $2$, we obtain improved upper bounds for minimal periods of optimal colorings of $6$-valent integer distance graphs.
Biclique immersions in graphs with independence number 2
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 122, Article 104042, 2024 • View Publication • BIB
The analogue of Hadwiger's conjecture for the immersion relation states that every graph $G$ contains an immersion of $K_{χ(G)}$. For graphs with independence number 2, this is equivalent to stating that every such $n$-vertex graph contains an immersion of $K_{\lceil n/2 \rceil}$. We show that every $n$-vertex graph with independence number 2 contains every complete bipartite graph on $\lceil n/2 \rceil$ vertices as an immersion.

The trianguline variety, tangent spaces and the Grothendieck-Springer resolution
By the work of Breuil-Hellmann-Schraen, we know that the trianguline variety contains crystalline companion points which are parametrised by pairs (w,w_sat) of permutations. We first define and study a certain combinatorial property of a pair (w',w) of permutations, linked to the Bruhat order, in the context of Weyl groups of root systems. We call good pairs the pairs satisfying this property (which is the vast majority of pairs) and bad pairs the other ones. We then give an exact formula for the dimension of the tangent space to the trianguline variety at (generic) crystalline companion points such that (w,w_sat) is a good pair. The method (due to Breuil-Hellmann-Schraen) is to first compute an analogous dimension for a local model of the trianguline variety built out of Grothendieck's simultaneous resolution. To achieve this, we prove a conjecture of Breuil-Hellmann-Schraen, describing the intersection of the closure of a Schubert cell with another Schubert cell on this local model (in the context of an arbitrary split reductive group), when this pair of cells is parametrised by a good pair of permutations. We give counter-examples to this conjecture for an infinite family of pairs of cells (associated to bad pairs).

Distribution of Andrews' Singular Overpartitions $\overline{C}_{p,1}(n)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Andrews introduced the partition function $\overline{C}_{k, i}(n)$, called singular overpartition, which counts the number of overpartitions of $n$ in which no part is divisible by $k$ and only parts $\equiv \pm i\pmod{k}$ may be overlined. We study the parity and distribution results for $\overline{C}_{k,i}(n),$ where $k>3$ and $1\leq i \leq \left\lfloor\frac{k}{2}\right\rfloor$. More particularly, we prove that for each integer $\ell\geq 2$ depending on $k$ and $i$, the interval $\left[\ell, \frac{\ell(3\ell+1)}{2}\right]$ $\Big($resp.\ $\left[2\ell-1, \frac{\ell(3\ell-1)}{2}\right] \Big)$ contains an integer $n$ such that $\overline{C}_{k,i}(n)$ is even (resp.\ odd). Finally we study the distribution for $\overline{C}_{p,1}(n)$ where $p\geq 5$ be a prime number.

A survey of congruences and quotients of partially ordered sets
Published in EMS Surv. Math. Sci. 11 (2024), no. 1, pp. 153-203 • View Publication • BIB
A quotient of a poset $P$ is a partial order obtained on the equivalence classes of an equivalence relation $θ$ on $P$; $θ$ is then called a congruence if it satisfies certain conditions, which vary according to different theories. The literature on congruences and quotients of partially ordered sets contains a large and profilerating array of approaches, but little in the way of systematic exposition and examination of the subject. We seek to rectify this by surveying the different theories in the literature and providing philosophical discussion on requirements for notions of congruences of posets. We advocate a pluralist approach which recognises that different types of congruence arise naturally in different mathematical situations. There are some notions of congruence which are very general, whilst others capture specific structure which often appears in examples. Indeed, we finish by giving several examples where quotients of posets appear naturally in mathematics.

Connectivity keeping edges of trees in 3-connected or 3-edge-connected graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Hasunuma [J. Graph Theory 102 (2023) 423-435] conjectured that for any tree $T$ of order $m$, every $k$-connected (or $k$-edge-connected) graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $k+m-1$ contains a tree $T'\cong T$ such that $G-E(T')$ is still $k$-connected (or $k$-edge connected). Hasunuma verified this conjecture for $k\leq 2$. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture for $k=3$.
An extension theorem for signotopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1926, Levi showed that, for every pseudoline arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ and two points in the plane, $\mathcal{A}$ can be extended by a pseudoline which contains the two prescribed points. Later extendability was studied for arrangements of pseudohyperplanes in higher dimensions. While the extendability of an arrangement of proper hyperplanes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with a hyperplane containing $d$ prescribed points is trivial, Richter-Gebert found an arrangement of pseudoplanes in $\mathbb{R}^3$ which cannot be extended with a pseudoplane containing two particular prescribed points. In this article, we investigate the extendability of signotopes, which are a combinatorial structure encoding a rich subclass of pseudohyperplane arrangements. Our main result is that signotopes of odd rank are extendable in the sense that for two prescribed crossing points we can add an element containing them. Moreover, we conjecture that in all even ranks $r \geq 4$ there exist signotopes which are not extendable for two prescribed points. Our conjecture is supported by examples in ranks 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 that were found with a SAT based approach.

On subtensors of high partition rank
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that for every positive integer $d \ge 2$ there exist polynomial functions $F_d, G_d: \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$ such that for each positive integer $r$, every order-$d$ tensor $T$ over an arbitrary field and with partition rank at least $G_d(r)$ contains a $F_d(r) \times \cdots \times F_d(r)$ subtensor with partition rank at least $r$. We then deduce analogous results on the Schmidt rank of polynomials in zero or high characteristic.

Enumeration and Unimodular Equivalence of Empty Delta-Modular Simplices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Consider a class of simplices defined by systems $A x \leq b$ of linear inequalities with $Δ$-modular matrices. A matrix is called $Δ$-modular, if all its rank-order sub-determinants are bounded by $Δ$ in an absolute value. In our work we call a simplex $Δ$-modular, if it can be defined by a system $A x \leq b$ with a $Δ$-modular matrix $A$. And we call a simplex empty, if it contains no points with integer coordinates. In literature, a simplex is called lattice-simplex, if all its vertices have integer coordinates. And a lattice-simplex called empty, if it contains no points with integer coordinates excluding its vertices. Recently, assuming that $Δ$ is fixed, it was shown that the number of $Δ$-modular empty simplices modulo the unimodular equivalence relation is bounded by a polynomial on dimension. We show that the analogous fact holds for the class of $Δ$-modular empty lattice-simplices. As the main result, assuming again that the value of the parameter $Δ$ is fixed, we show that all unimodular equivalence classes of simplices of the both types can be enumerated by a polynomial-time algorithm. As the secondary result, we show the existence of a polynomial-time algorithm for the problem to check the unimodular equivalence relation for a given pair of $Δ$-modular, not necessarily empty, simplices.
On the geometric thickness of 2-degenerate graphs
A graph is 2-degenerate if every subgraph contains a vertex of degree at most 2. We show that every 2-degenerate graph can be drawn with straight lines such that the drawing decomposes into 4 plane forests. Therefore, the geometric arboricity, and hence the geometric thickness, of 2-degenerate graphs is at most 4. On the other hand, we show that there are 2-degenerate graphs that do not admit any straight-line drawing with a decomposition of the edge set into 2 plane graphs. That is, there are 2-degenerate graphs with geometric thickness, and hence geometric arboricity, at least 3. This answers two questions posed by Eppstein [Separating thickness from geometric thickness. In Towards a Theory of Geometric Graphs, vol. 342 of Contemp. Math., AMS, 2004].

Improved bounds on the cop number when forbidding a minor
Published in Journal of Graph Theory, 108(3):620-646, March 2025 • View Publication • BIB
Andreae (1986) proved that the cop number of connected $H$-minor-free graphs is bounded for every graph $H$. In particular, the cop number is at most $|E(H-h)|$ if $H-h$ contains no isolated vertex, where $h\in V(H)$. The main result of this paper is an improvement on this bound, which is most significant when $H$ is small or sparse, for instance when $H-h$ can be obtained from another graph by multiple edge subdivisions. Some consequences of this result are improvements on the upper bound for the cop number of $K_{3,t}$-minor-free graphs, $K_{2,t}$-minor-free graphs and linklessly embeddable graphs.
A strong-type Furstenberg-Sárközy theorem for sets of positive measure
Published in J. Geom. Anal. 33 (2023), issue 8, article no. 255 • View Publication • BIB
For every $β\in(0,\infty)$, $β\neq 1$ we prove that a positive measure subset $A$ of the unit square contains a point $(x_0,y_0)$ such that $A$ nontrivially intersects curves $y-y_0 = a (x-x_0)^β$ for a whole interval $I\subseteq(0,\infty)$ of parameters $a\in I$. A classical Nikodym set counterexample prevents one to take $β=1$, which is the case of straight lines. Moreover, for a planar set $A$ of positive density we show that the interval $I$ can be arbitrarily large on the logarithmic scale. These results can be thought of as Bourgain-style large-set variants of a recent continuous-parameter Sárközy-type theorem by Kuca, Orponen, and Sahlsten.
Minimum Degree Threshold for $H$-factors with High Discrepancy
Given a graph $H$, a perfect $H$-factor in a graph $G$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of $H$ spanning $G$. Kühn and Osthus showed that the minimum degree threshold for a graph $G$ to contain a perfect $H$-factor is either given by $1-1/χ(H)$ or by $1-1/χ_{cr}(H)$ depending on certain natural divisibility considerations. Given a graph $G$ of order $n$, a $2$-edge-coloring of $G$ and a subgraph $G'$ of $G$, we say that $G'$ has high discrepancy if it contains significantly (linear in $n$) more edges of one color than the other. Balogh, Csaba, Pluhár and Treglown asked for the minimum degree threshold guaranteeing that every 2-edge-coloring of $G$ has an $H$-factor with high discrepancy and they settled the case where $H$ is a clique. Here we completely resolve this question by determining the minimum degree threshold for high discrepancy of $H$-factors for every graph $H$.
Additive structure in convex translates

Let $\mathcal{P}$ be a set of points in the plane, and $\mathcal{S}$ a strictly convex set of points. In this note, we show that if $\mathcal{P}$ contains many translates of $\mathcal{S}$, then these translates must come from a generalized arithmetic progression of low dimension. We also discuss an application to the unit distance conjecture.

A Note on the Faces of the Dual Koch Arrangement
We analyze the faces of the dual Koch arrangement, which is the arrangement of $2^s + 1$ lines obtained by projective duality from the Koch chain $K_s$. In particular, we show that this line arrangement does not contain any $k$-gons for $k > 5$, and that the number of pentagons is $3 \cdot 2^{s-1} - 3$.

On the Multigraph Overfull Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
A subgraph $H$ of a multigraph $G$ is overfull if $ |E(H) | > Δ(G) \lfloor |V(H)|/2 \rfloor$. Analogous to the Overfull Conjecture proposed by Chetwynd and Hilton in 1986, Stiebitz et al. in 2012 formed the multigraph version of the conjecture as follows: Let $G$ be a multigraph with maximum multiplicity $r$ and maximum degree $Δ>\frac{1}{3} r|V(G)|$. Then $G$ has chromatic index $Δ(G)$ if and only if $G$ contains no overfull subgraph. In this paper, we prove the following three results toward the Multigraph Overfull Conjecture for sufficiently large and even $n$. (1) If $G$ is $k$-regular with $k\ge r(n/2+18)$, then $G$ has a 1-factorization. This result also settles a conjecture of the first author and Tipnis from 2001 up to a constant error in the lower bound of $k$. (2) If $G$ contains an overfull subgraph and $δ(G)\ge r(n/2+18)$, then $χ'(G)=\lceil χ'_f(G) \rceil$, where $χ'_f(G)$ is the fractional chromatic index of $G$. (3) If the minimum degree of $G$ is at least $(1+\varepsilon)rn/2$ for any $0<\varepsilon<1$ and $G$ contains no overfull subgraph, then $χ'(G)=Δ(G)$. The proof is based on the decomposition of multigraphs into simple graphs and we prove a slightly weak version of a conjecture due to the first author and Tipnis from 1991 on decomposing a multigraph into constrained simple graphs. The result is of independent interests.

$K_r$-saturated Graphs and the Two Families Theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $H$, we say that a graph $G$ is $H$-saturated if $G$ contains no copy of $H$ but adding any new edge to $G$ creates a copy of $H$. Let $sat(n,K_r,t)$ be the minimum number of edges in a $K_r$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $t$. Day showed that for fixed $r \geq 3$ and $t \geq r-2$, $sat(n,K_r,t)=tn-c(r,t)$ for large enough $n$, where $c(r,t)$ is a constant depending on $r$ and $t$, and proved the bounds $$ 2^t t^{3/2} \ll_r c(r,t) \leq t^{t^{2t^2}} $$ for fixed $r$ and large $t$. In this paper we show that for fixed $r$ and large $t$, the order of magnitude of $c(r,t)$ is given by $c(r,t)=Θ_r \left(4^t t^{-1/2} \right)$. Moreover, we investigate the dependence on $r$, obtaining the estimates $$ \frac{4^{t-r}}{\sqrt{t-r+3}} + r^2 \ll c(r,t) \ll \frac{4^{t-r} \min{(r,\sqrt{t-r+3})}}{\sqrt{t-r+3}} + r^2 \ . $$ We further show that for all $r$ and $t$, there is a finite collection of graphs such that all extremal graphs are blow-ups of graphs in the collection. Using similar ideas, we show that every large $K_r$-saturated graph with $e$ edges has a vertex cover of size $O(e / \log e)$, uniformly in $r \geq 3$. This strengthens a previous result of Pikhurko. We also provide examples for which this bound is tight. A key ingredient in the proofs is a new version of Bollobás's Two Families Theorem.

Spectral extrema of graphs: Forbidden star-path forests

A path of order $n$ is denoted by $P_n$, and a star of order $n$ is denoted by $S_{n-1}$. A star-path forest is a forest whose connected components are paths and stars. In this paper we determine the maximum spectral radius of graphs that contain no copy of $kS_{\ell-1}\cup P_{\ell}$, $k_1S_{2\ell -1}\cup k_2P_{2\ell}$ or $kS_{4}\cup 2P_{5}$ for $n$ appropriately large.

Minimal H-factors and covers
Published in J. Appl. Probab. 62 (2025) 136-152 • View Publication • BIB
Given a fixed small graph H and a larger graph G, an H-factor is a collection of vertex-disjoint subgraphs $H'\subset G$, each isomorphic to H, that cover the vertices of G. If G is the complete graph $K_n$ equipped with independent U(0,1) edge weights, what is the lowest total weight of an H-factor? This problem has previously been considered for e.g.\ $H=K_2$. We show that if H contains a cycle, then the minimum weight is sharply concentrated around some $L_n = Θ(n^{1-1/d^*})$ (where $d^*$ is the maximum 1-density of any subgraph of H). Some of our results also hold for H-covers, where the copies of H are not required to be vertex-disjoint.
