A sufficient condition for pre-Hamiltonian cycles in bipartite digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $D$ be a strongly connected balanced bipartite directed graph of order $2a\geq 10$ other than a directed cycle. Let $x,y$ be distinct vertices in $D$. $\{x,y\}$ dominates a vertex $z$ if $x\rightarrow z$ and $y\rightarrow z$; in this case, we call the pair $\{x,y\}$ dominating. In this paper we prove: If $ max\{d(x), d(y)\}\geq 2a-2$ for every dominating pair of vertices $\{x,y\}$, then $D$ contains cycles of all lengths $2,4, \ldots , 2a-2$ or $D$ is isomorphic to a certain digraph of order ten which we specify.

Secret sharing on large girth graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate graph based secret sharing schemes and its information ratio, also called complexity, measuring the maximal amount of information the vertices has to store. It was conjectured that in large girth graphs, where the interaction between far away nodes is restricted to a single path, this ratio is bounded. This conjecture was supported by several result, most notably by a result of Csirmaz and Ligeti saying that the complexity of graphs with girth at least six and no neighboring high degree vertices is strictly below 2. In this paper we refute the above conjecture. First, a family of $d$-regular graphs is defined iteratively such that the complexity of these graphs is the largest possible $(d+1)/2$ allowed by Stinson's bound. This part extends earlier results of van Dijk and Blundo et al, and uses the so-called entropy method. Second, using combinatorial arguments, we show that this family contains graphs with arbitrary large girth. In particular, we obtain the following purely combinatorial result, which might be interesting on its own: there are $d$-regular graphs with arbitrary large girth such that any fractional edge-cover by stars (or by complete multipartite graphs) must cover some vertex $(d+1)/2$ times.

Tutte Polynomials of Symmetric Hyperplane Arrangements
Originally in 1954 the Tutte polynomial was a bivariate polynomial associated to a graph in order to enumerate the colorings of this graph and of its dual graph at the same time. However the Tutte polynomial reveals more of the internal structure of a graph, and contains even other specializations from other sciences like the Jones polynomial in Knot theory, the partition function of the Pott model in statistical physics, and the reliability polynomial in network theory. In this article, we study the Tutte polynomial associated to more general objects which are the arrangements of hyperplanes. Indeed determining the Tutte polynomial of a graph is equivalent to determining the Tutte polynomial of a special hyperplane arrangement called graphic arrangement. In 2007 Ardila computed the Tutte polynomials of the hyperplane arrangements associated to the classical Weyl groups, and the characteristic polynomials of the Catalan arrangements. The charateristic polynomial is also a specialization of the Tutte polynomial. In 2012 Seo computed the characteristic polynomials of the Shi threshold arrangements, and in 2017 Song computed the characteristic polynomials of the $\mathcal{I}_n$ arrangements in the plane and in the space. We aim to bring a more general result by introducing a wider class of hyperplane arrangements which is the set of symmetric hyperplane arrangements. We compute the Tutte polynomial of a symmetric hyperplane arrangement, and, as examples of application, we deduce the Tutte polynomials of the Catalan, the Shi threshold, and the $\mathcal{I}_n$ arrangements.

An Erdős-Gallai-type theorem for keyrings
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics, 34(4) 2018, 633-638 • View Publication • BIB
A keyring is a graph obtained by appending $r \geq 1$ leaves to one of the vertices of a cycle. We prove that for every $r \leq (k-1)/2$, any graph with average degree more than $k-1$ contains a keyring with $r$ leaves and at least $k$ edges.

We prove that a subset of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ that contains a hyperplane in any direction has size at least $q^{n}-O(q^2)$.

A proof of a conjecture of Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau and Schelp on subgraphs of minimum degree $k$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau and Schelp observed the following fact for every fixed integer $k\geq 2$: Every graph on $n\geq k-1$ vertices with at least $(k-1)(n-k+2)+{k-2\choose 2}$ edges contains a subgraph with minimum degree at least $k$. However, there are examples in which the whole graph is the only such subgraph. Erdős et al. conjectured that having just one more edge implies the existence of a subgraph on at most $(1-\varepsilon_k)n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $k$, where $\varepsilon_k>0$ depends only on $k$. We prove this conjecture, using and extending ideas of Mousset, Noever and Škorić.

Arrangements of homothets of a convex body II
Published in Contributions to Discrete Mathematics 13 (2018), 116--123 • View Publication • BIB
A family of homothets of an o-symmetric convex body K in d-dimensional Euclidean space is called a Minkowski arrangement if no homothet contains the center of any other homothet in its interior. We show that any pairwise intersecting Minkowski arrangement of a d-dimensional convex body has at most $2\cdot 3^d$ members. This improves a result of Polyanskii (arXiv:1610.04400). Using similar ideas, we also give a proof the following result of Polyanskii: Let $K_1,\dots,K_n$ be a sequence of homothets of the o-symmetric convex body $K$, such that for any $i<j$, the center of $K_j$ lies on the boundary of $K_i$. Then $n\leq O(3^d d)$.

Group divisible (K_4-e)-packings with any minimum leave
Published • View Publication • BIB
A decomposition of $K_{n(g)}\setminus L$, the complete n-partite equipartite graph with a subgraph L (called the leave) removed, into edge disjoint copies of a graph G is called a maximum group divisible packing of $K_{n(g)}$ with G if L contains as few edges as possible. We examine all possible minimum leaves for maximum group divisible $(K_4-e)$-packings. Necessary and sufficient conditions are established for their existences.

Large induced subgraphs with $k$ vertices of almost maximum degree
In this note we prove that for every integer $k$, there exist constants $g_{1}(k)$ and $g_{2}(k)$ such that the following holds. If $G$ is a graph on $n$ vertices with maximum degree $Δ$ then it contains an induced subgraph $H$ on at least $n - g_{1}(k)\sqrtΔ$ vertices, such that $H$ has $k$ vertices of the same degree of order at least $Δ(H)-g_{2}(k)$. This solves a conjecture of Caro and Yuster up to the constant $g_{2}(k)$.

Conscious and controlling elements in combinatorial group testing problems with more defectives
Published • View Publication • BIB
In combinatorial group testing problems Questioner needs to find a defective element $x\in [n]$ by testing subsets of $[n]$. In [18] the authors introduced a new model, where each element knows the answer for those queries that contain it and each element should be able to identify the defective one. In this article we continue to investigate this kind of models with more defective elements. We also consider related models inspired by secret sharing models, where the elements should share information among them to find out the defectives. Finally the adaptive versions of the different models are also investigated.

Constraining the clustering transition for colorings of sparse random graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Ω_q$ denote the set of proper $q$-colorings of the random graph $G_{n,m}, m=dn/2$ and let $H_q$ be the graph with vertex set $Ω_q$ and an edge $\{σ,τ\}$ where $σ,τ$ are mappings $[n]\to[q]$ iff $h(σ,τ)=1$. Here $h(σ,τ)$ is the Hamming distance $|\{v\in [n]:σ(v)\neqτ(v)\}|$. We show that w.h.p. $H_q$ contains a single giant component containing almost all colorings in $Ω_q$ if $d$ is sufficiently large and $q\geq \frac{cd}{\log d}$ for a constant $c>3/2$.

Additive Combinatorics: A Menu of Research Problems
This text contains over three hundred specific open questions on various topics in additive combinatorics, each placed in context by reviewing all relevant results. While the primary purpose is to provide an ample supply of problems for student research, it is hopefully also useful for a wider audience. It is the author's intention to keep the material current, thus all feedback and updates are greatly appreciated.

Hamilton cycles in infinite cubic graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Investigating a problem of B. Mohar, we show that every one-ended Hamiltonian cubic graph with end degree 3 contains a second Hamilton cycle. We also construct two examples showing that this result does not extend to give a third Hamilton cycle, nor that it extends to the two-ended case.

Cycle decompositions of pathwidth-6 graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Hajós conjecture asserts that a simple Eulerian graph on n vertices can be decomposed into at most (n - 1)/2 cycles. The conjecture is only proved for graph classes in which every element contains vertices of degree 2 or 4. We develop new techniques to construct cycle decompositions. They work on the common neighbourhood of two degree-6 vertices. With these techniques we find structures that cannot occur in a minimal counterexample to Hajós conjecture and verify the conjecture for Eulerian graphs of pathwidth at most 6. This implies that these graphs satisfy the small cycle double cover conjecture.

Hall-Littlewood RSK field
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a randomized Hall-Littlewood RSK algorithm and study its combinatorial and probabilistic properties. On the probabilistic side, a new model --- the Hall-Littlewood RSK field --- is introduced. Its various degenerations contain known objects (the stochastic six vertex model, the asymmetric simple exclusion process) as well as a variety of new ones. We provide formulas for a rich class of observables of these models, extending existing results about Macdonald processes. On the combinatorial side, we establish analogs of properties of the classical RSK algorithm: invertibility, symmetry, and a "bijectivization" of the skew-Cauchy identity.
On the maximum degree of path-pairable planar graphs
A graph is path-pairable if for any pairing of its vertices there exist edge-disjoint paths joining the vertices in each pair. We investigate the behaviour of the maximum degree in path-pairable planar graphs. We show that any $n$-vertex path-pairable planar graph must contain a vertex of degree linear in $n$.

Elation KM-arcs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study KM-arcs in $PG(2, q)$, the Desarguesian projective plane of order $q$. A KM-arc A of type $t$ is a natural generalisation of a hyperoval: it is a set of $q + t$ points in $PG(2, q)$ such that every line of $PG(2,q)$ meets A in $0,2$ or $t$ points. We study a particular class of KM-arcs, namely, elation KM-arcs. These KM-arcs are highly symmetrical and moreover, many of the known examples are elation KM-arcs. We provide an algebraic framework and show that all elation KM-arcs of type $q/4$ in $PG(2,q)$ are translation KM-arcs. Using a result of [2], this concludes the classification problem for elation KM-arcs of type $q/4$. Furthermore, we construct for all $q = 2^h$, $h > 3$, an infinite family of elation KM-arcs of type $q/8$, and for $q = 2^h$, where $4, 6, 7 | h$ an infinite family of KM-arcs of type $q/16$. Both families contain new examples of KM-arcs.

Four NP-complete problems about generalizations of perfect graphs
We show that the following problems are NP-complete. 1. Can the vertex set of a graph be partitioned into two sets such that each set induces a perfect graph? 2. Is the difference between the chromatic number and clique number at most $1$ for every induced subgraph of a graph? 3. Can the vertex set of every induced subgraph of a graph be partitioned into two sets such that the first set induces a perfect graph, and the clique number of the graph induced by the second set is smaller than that of the original induced subgraph? 4. Does a graph contain a stable set whose deletion results in a perfect graph? The proofs of the NP-completeness of the four problems follow the same pattern: Showing that all the four problems are NP-complete when restricted to triangle-free graphs by using results of Maffray and Preissmann on $3$-colorability and $4$-colorability of triangle-free graphs
Conflict-free connection numbers of line graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A path in an edge-colored graph is called \emph{conflict-free} if it contains at least one color used on exactly one of its edges. An edge-colored graph $G$ is \emph{conflict-free connected} if for any two distinct vertices of $G$, there is a conflict-free path connecting them. For a connected graph $G$, the \emph{conflict-free connection number} of $G$, denoted by $cfc(G)$, is defined as the minimum number of colors that are required to make $G$ conflict-free connected. In this paper, we investigate the conflict-free connection numbers of connected claw-free graphs, especially line graphs. We first show that for an arbitrary connected graph $G$, there exists a positive integer $k$ such that $cfc(L^k(G))\leq 2$. Secondly, we get the exact value of the conflict-free connection number of a connected claw-free graph, especially a connected line graph. Thirdly, we prove that for an arbitrary connected graph $G$ and an arbitrary positive integer $k$, we always have $cfc(L^{k+1}(G))\leq cfc(L^k(G))$, with only the exception that $G$ is isomorphic to a star of order at least~$5$ and $k=1$. Finally, we obtain the exact values of $cfc(L^k(G))$, and use them as an efficient tool to get the smallest nonnegative integer $k_0$ such that $cfc(L^{k_0}(G))=2$.

Cubic vertex-transitive non-Cayley graphs of order 12p
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is said to be {\em vertex-transitive non-Cayley} if its full automorphism group acts transitively on its vertices and contains no subgroups acting regularly on its vertices. In this paper, a complete classification of cubic vertex-transitive non-Cayley graphs of order $12p$, where $p$ is a prime, is given. As a result, there are $11$ sporadic and one infinite family of such graphs, of which the sporadic ones occur when $p=5$, $7$ or $17$, and the infinite family exists if and only if $p\equiv1\ (\mod 4)$, and in this family there is a unique graph for a given order.
