Directed paths: from Ramsey to Ruzsa and Szemerédi
Starting from an innocent Ramsey-theoretic question regarding directed paths in tournaments, we discover a series of rich and surprising connections that lead into the theory around a fundamental problem in Combinatorics: the Ruzsa-Szemerédi induced matching problem. Using these relationships, we prove that every coloring of the edges of the transitive $n$-vertex tournament using three colors contains a directed path of length at least $\sqrt{n} \cdot e^{\log^* n}$ which entirely avoids some color. We also expose connections to a family of constructions for Ramsey tournaments, and introduce and resolve some natural generalizations of the Ruzsa-Szemerédi problem which we encounter through our investigation.

Improper Interval Graphs and the Corresponding Minimal Forbidden Interval Subgraphs
An interval graph is considered improper if and only if it has a representation such that an interval contains another interval. Previously these have been investigated in terms of balance and minimal forbidden interval subgraphs for the class of 1-improper interval graphs. This paper investigates the minimal forbidden interval sub-graphs further, generalizing results to all p-improper interval graphs. It is apparent that there are many different types of possible minimal forbidden subgraphs that fall into four broad categories.

Semi-algebraic colorings of complete graphs
We consider $m$-colorings of the edges of a complete graph, where each color class is defined semi-algebraically with bounded complexity. The case $m = 2$ was first studied by Alon et al., who applied this framework to obtain surprisingly strong Ramsey-type results for intersection graphs of geometric objects and for other graphs arising in computational geometry. Considering larger values of $m$ is relevant, e.g., to problems concerning the number of distinct distances determined by a point set. For $p\ge 3$ and $m\ge 2$, the classical Ramsey number $R(p;m)$ is the smallest positive integer $n$ such that any $m$-coloring of the edges of $K_n$, the complete graph on $n$ vertices, contains a monochromatic $K_p$. It is a longstanding open problem that goes back to Schur (1916) to decide whether $R(p;m)=2^{O(m)}$, for a fixed $p$. We prove that this is true if each color class is defined semi-algebraically with bounded complexity. The order of magnitude of this bound is tight. Our proof is based on the Cutting Lemma of Chazelle {\em et al.}, and on a Szemerédi-type regularity lemma for multicolored semi-algebraic graphs, which is of independent interest. The same technique is used to address the semi-algebraic variant of a more general Ramsey-type problem of Erdős and Shelah.
More nonexistence results for symmetric pair coverings
A $(v,k,λ)$-covering is a pair $(V, \mathcal{B})$, where $V$ is a $v$-set of points and $\mathcal{B}$ is a collection of $k$-subsets of $V$ (called blocks), such that every unordered pair of points in $V$ is contained in at least $λ$ blocks in $\mathcal{B}$. The excess of such a covering is the multigraph on vertex set $V$ in which the edge between vertices $x$ and $y$ has multiplicity $r_{xy}-λ$, where $r_{xy}$ is the number of blocks which contain the pair $\{x,y\}$. A covering is symmetric if it has the same number of blocks as points. Bryant et al.(2011) adapted the determinant related arguments used in the proof of the Bruck-Ryser-Chowla theorem to establish the nonexistence of certain symmetric coverings with $2$-regular excesses. Here, we adapt the arguments related to rational congruence of matrices and show that they imply the nonexistence of some cyclic symmetric coverings and of various symmetric coverings with specified excesses.

Dirac's Condition for Spanning Halin Subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex graph with $n\ge 3$. A classic result of Dirac from 1952 asserts that $G$ is hamiltonian if $δ(G)\ge n/2$. Dirac's theorem is one of the most influential results in the study of hamiltonicity and by now there are many related known results\,(see, e.g., J. A. Bondy, Basic Graph Theory: Paths and Circuits, Chapter 1 in: {\it Handbook of Combinatorics Vol.1}). A {\it Halin graph} is a planar graph consisting of two edge-disjoint subgraphs: a spanning tree of at least 4 vertices and with no vertex of degree 2, and a cycle induced on the set of the leaves of the spanning tree. Halin graphs possess rich hamiltonicity properties such as being hamiltonian, hamiltonian connected, and almost pancyclic. As a continuous "generalization" of Dirac's theorem, in this paper, we show that there exists a positive integer $n_0$ such that any graph $G$ with $n\ge n_0$ vertices and $δ(G)\ge (n+1)/2$ contains a spanning Halin subgraph. In particular, it contains a spanning Halin subgraph which is also pancyclic.

Off-diagonal hypergraph Ramsey numbers

The Ramsey number $r_k(s,n)$ is the minimum $N$ such that every red-blue coloring of the $k$-subsets of $\{1, \ldots, N\}$ contains a red set of size $s$ or a blue set of size $n$, where a set is red (blue) if all of its $k$-subsets are red (blue). A $k$-uniform \emph{tight path} of size $s$, denoted by $P_{s}$, is a set of $s$ vertices $v_1 < \cdots < v_{s}$ in $\mathbb{Z}$, and all $s-k+1$ edges of the form $\{v_j,v_{j+1},\ldots, v_{j + k -1}\}$. Let $r_k(P_s, n)$ be the minimum $N$ such that every red-blue coloring of the $k$-subsets of $\{1, \ldots, N\}$ results in a red $P_{s}$ or a blue set of size $n$. The problem of estimating both $r_k(s,n)$ and $r_k(P_s, n)$ for $k=2$ goes back to the seminal work of Erdos and Szekeres from 1935, while the case $k\ge 3$ was first investigated by Erdos and Rado in 1952. In this paper, we deduce a quantitative relationship between multicolor variants of $r_k(P_s, n)$ and $r_k(n, n)$. This yields several consequences including the following: (1) We determine the correct tower growth rate for both $r_k(s,n)$ and $r_k(P_s, n)$ for $s \ge k+3$. The question of determining the tower growth rate of $r_k(s,n)$ for all $s \ge k+1$ was posed by Erdos and Hajnal in 1972. (2) We show that determining the tower growth rate of $r_k(P_{k+1}, n)$ is equivalent to determining the tower growth rate of $r_k(n,n)$, which is a notorious conjecture of Erdos, Hajnal and Rado from 1965 that remains open. Some related off-diagonal hypergraph Ramsey problems are also explored.

Cayley graphs of more than one abelian group
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that for certain integers $n$, the problem of whether or not a Cayley digraph $Γ$ of $\mathbb Z_n$ is also isomorphic to a Cayley digraph of some other abelian group $G$ of order $n$ reduces to the question of whether or not a natural subgroup of the full automorphism group contains more than one regular abelian group up to isomorphism (as opposed to the full automorphism group). A necessary and sufficient condition is then given for such circulants to be isomorphic to Cayley digraphs of more than one abelian group, and an easy-to-check necessary condition is provided.

On the Likelihood of Single-Peaked Preferences
Published in Soc Choice Welf (2017) • View Publication • BIB
This paper contains an extensive combinatorial analysis of the single-peaked domain restriction and investigates the likelihood that an election is single-peaked. We provide a very general upper bound result for domain restrictions that can be defined by certain forbidden configurations. This upper bound implies that many domain restrictions (including the single-peaked restriction) are very unlikely to appear in a random election chosen according to the Impartial Culture assumption. For single-peaked elections, this upper bound can be refined and complemented by a lower bound that is asymptotically tight. In addition, we provide exact results for elections with few voters or candidates. Moreover, we consider the Pólya urn model and the Mallows model and obtain lower bounds showing that single-peakedness is considerably more likely to appear for certain parameterizations.

Comments on "New generating relations for products of two Laguerre polynomials"
By utilizing a two-dimensional extension of a very general series transform given by Bailey, Exton [Indian J. pure appl. Math. 24 (6) (1993), 401-408] deduced a very general double generating relation of a product of a pair of Laguerre polynomials and obtained a number of useful relations with elementary functions, Bessel functions, Hermite polynomials and single series expansions of pairs of Laguerre polynomials. Unfortunately, some of the results given by Exon contain errors and thus this is the aim of this short note to provide the corrected form of these results.
A sunflower anti-Ramsey theorem and its applications
A $h$-sunflower in a hypergraph is a family of edges with $h$ vertices in common. We show that if we colour the edges of a complete hypergraph in such a way that any monochromatic $h$-sunflower has at most $λ$ petals, then it contains a large rainbow complete subhypergraph. This extends a theorem by Lefmann, Rödl and Wysocka, but this version can be applied to problems in geometry and algebra. We also give an infinite version of the theorem.
High density piecewise syndeticity of product sets in amenable groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
M. Beiglböck, V. Bergelson, and A. Fish proved that if $G$ is a countable amenable group and $A$ and $B$ are subsets of $G$ with positive Banach density, then the product set $AB$ is piecewise syndetic. This means that there is a finite subset $E$ of $G$ such that $EAB$ is thick, that is, $EAB$ contains translates of any finite subset of $G$. When $G=\mathbb{Z}$, this was first proven by R. Jin. We prove a quantitative version of the aforementioned result by providing a lower bound on the density (with respect to a Følner sequence) of the set of witnesses to the thickness of $% EAB$. When $G=\mathbb{Z}^d$, this result was first proven by the current set of authors using completely different techniques.
On a group theoretic generalization of the Morse-Hedlund theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
In their 1938 seminal paper on symbolic dynamics, Morse and Hedlund proved that every aperiodic infinite word $x\in A^N,$ over a non empty finite alphabet $A,$ contains at least $n+1$ distinct factors of each length $n.$ They further showed that an infinite word $x$ has exactly $n+1$ distinct factors of each length $n$ if and only if $x$ is binary, aperiodic and balanced, i.e., $x$ is a Sturmian word. In this paper we obtain a broad generalization of the Morse-Hedlund theorem via group actions. Given a subgroup $G$ of the symmetric group $S_n, $ let $1\leq ε(G)\leq n$ denote the number of distinct $G$-orbits of $\{1,2,\ldots ,n\}.$ Since $G$ is a subgroup of $S_n,$ it acts on $A^n=\{a_1a_2\cdots a_n\,|\,a_i\in A\}$ by permutation. Thus, given an infinite word $x\in A^N$ and an infinite sequence $ω=(G_n)_{n\geq 1}$ of subgroups $G_n \subseteq S_n,$ we consider the complexity function $p_{ω,x}:N \rightarrow N$ which counts for each length $n$ the number of equivalence classes of factors of $x$ of length $n$ under the action of $G_n.$ We show that if $x$ is aperiodic, then $p_{ω, x}(n)\geqε(G_n)+1$ for each $n\geq 1,$ and moreover, if equality holds for each $n,$ then $x$ is Sturmian. Conversely, let $x$ be a Sturmian word. Then for every infinite sequence $ω=(G_n)_{n\geq 1}$ of Abelian subgroups $G_n \subseteq S_n,$ there exists $ω'=(G_n')_{n\geq 1}$ such that for each $n\geq 1:$ $G_n'\subseteq S_n$ is isomorphic to $G_n$ and $p_{ω',x}(n)=ε(G'_n)+1.$ Applying the above results to the sequence $(Id_n)_{n\geq 1},$ where $Id_n$ is the trivial subgroup of $S_n$ consisting only of the identity, we recover both directions of the Morse-Hedland theorem.

Turán numbers of hypergraph trees
An $r$-graph is an $r$-uniform hypergraph tree (or $r$-tree) if its edges can be ordered as $E_1,\ldots, E_m$ such that $\forall i>1 \, \exists α(i)<i$ such that $E_i\cap (\bigcup_{j=1}^{i-1} E_j)\subseteq E_{α(i)}$. The Turán number $ex(n,{\cal H})$ of an $r$-graph ${\cal H}$ is the largest size of an $n$-vertex $r$-graph that does not contain ${\cal H}$. A cross-cut of ${\cal H}$ is a set of vertices in ${\cal H}$ that contains exactly one vertex of each edge of ${\cal H}$. The cross-cut number $σ({\cal H})$ of ${\cal H}$ is the minimum size of a cross-cut of ${\cal H}$. We show that for a large family of $r$-graphs (largest within a certain scope) that are embeddable in $r$-trees, $ex(n,{\cal H})=(σ-1)\binom{n}{r-1}+o(n^{r-1})$ holds, and we establish structural stability of near extremal graphs. From stability, we establish exact results for some subfamilies.

Classification of finite groups with toroidal or projective-planar permutability graphs
Published in Communications in Algebra 44 (2016), no. 9, pp. 3705-3726 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a group. The permutability graph of subgroups of $G$, denoted by $Γ(G)$, is a graph having all the proper subgroups of $G$ as its vertices, and two subgroups are adjacent in $Γ(G)$ if and only if they permute. In this paper, we classify the finite groups whose permutability graphs are toroidal or projective-planar. In addition, we classify the finite groups whose permutability graph does not contain one of $K_{3,3}$, $K_{1,5}$, $C_6$, $P_5$, or $P_6$ as a subgraph.

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph of density $p$ on $n$ vertices. Following Erdős, Łuczak and Spencer, an $m$-vertex subgraph $H$ of $G$ is called {\em full} if $H$ has minimum degree at least $p(m - 1)$. Let $f(G)$ denote the order of a largest full subgraph of $G$. If $p\binom{n}{2}$ is a non-negative integer, define \[ f(n,p) = \min\{f(G) : \vert V(G)\vert = n, \ \vert E(G)\vert = p\binom{n}{2} \}.\] Erdős, Łuczak and Spencer proved that for $n \geq 2$, \[ (2n)^{\frac{1}{2}} - 2 \leq f(n, {\frac{1}{2}}) \leq 4n^{\frac{2}{3}}(\log n)^{\frac{1}{3}}.\] In this paper, we prove the following lower bound: for $n^{-\frac{2}{3}} <p_n <1-n^{-\frac{1}{7}}$, \[ f(n,p) \geq \frac{1}{4}(1-p)^{\frac{2}{3}}n^{\frac{2}{3}} -1.\] Furthermore we show that this is tight up to a multiplicative constant factor for infinitely many $p$ near the elements of $\{\frac{1}{2},\frac{2}{3},\frac{3}{4},\dots\}$. In contrast, we show that for any $n$-vertex graph $G$, either $G$ or $G^c$ contains a full subgraph on $Ω(\frac{n}{\log n})$ vertices. Finally, we discuss full subgraphs of random and pseudo-random graphs, and several open problems.

Orthogonal colorings of the sphere
Published in Mathematika 62 (2016) 492-501 • View Publication • BIB
An orthogonal coloring of the two-dimensional unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$, is a partition of $\mathbb{S}^2$ into parts such that no part contains a pair of orthogonal points, that is, a pair of points at spherical distance $π/2$ apart. It is a well-known result that an orthogonal coloring of $\mathbb{S}^2$ requires at least four parts, and orthogonal colorings with exactly four parts can easily be constructed from a regular octahedron centered at the origin. An intriguing question is whether or not every orthogonal 4-coloring of $\mathbb{S}^2$ is such an octahedral coloring. In this paper we address this question and show that if every color class has a non-empty interior, then the coloring is octahedral. Some related results are also given.
Dominating induced matchings in graphs containing no long claw
Published • View Publication • BIB
An induced matching $M$ in a graph $G$ is dominating if every edge not in $M$ shares exactly one vertex with an edge in $M$. The dominating induced matching problem (also known as efficient edge domination) asks whether a graph $G$ contains a dominating induced matching. This problem is generally NP-complete, but polynomial-time solvable for graphs with some special properties. In particular, it is solvable in polynomial time for claw-free graphs. In the present paper, we study this problem for graphs containing no long claw, i.e. no induced subgraph obtained from the claw by subdividing each of its edges exactly once. To solve the problem in this class, we reduce it to the following question: given a graph $G$ and a subset of its vertices, does $G$ contain a matching saturating all vertices of the subset? We show that this question can be answered in polynomial time, thus providing a polynomial-time algorithm to solve the dominating induced matching problem for graphs containing no long claw.

Probabilistic existence results for separable codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Separable codes were defined by Cheng and Miao in 2011, motivated by applications to the identification of pirates in a multimedia setting. Combinatorially, $\overline{t}$-separable codes lie somewhere between $t$-frameproof and $(t-1)$-frameproof codes: all $t$-frameproof codes are $\overline{t}$-separable, and all $\overline{t}$-separable codes are $(t-1)$-frameproof. Results for frameproof codes show that (when $q$ is large) there are $q$-ary $\overline{t}$-separable codes of length $n$ with approximately $q^{\lceil n/t\rceil}$ codewords, and that no $q$-ary $\overline{t}$-separable codes of length $n$ can have more than approximately $q^{\lceil n/(t-1)\rceil}$ codewords. The paper provides improved probabilistic existence results for $\overline{t}$-separable codes when $t\geq 3$. More precisely, for all $t\geq 3$ and all $n\geq 3$, there exists a constant $κ$ (depending only on $t$ and $n$) such that there exists a $q$-ary $\overline{t}$-separable code of length $n$ with at least $κq^{n/(t-1)}$ codewords for all sufficiently large integers $q$. This shows, in particular, that the upper bound (derived from the bound on $(t-1)$-frameproof codes) on the number of codewords in a $\overline{t}$-separable code is realistic. The results above are more surprising after examining the situation when $t=2$. Results due to Gao and Ge show that a $q$-ary $\overline{2}$-separable code of length $n$ can contain at most $\frac{3}{2}q^{2\lceil n/3\rceil}-\frac{1}{2}q^{\lceil n/3\rceil}$ codewords, and that codes with at least $κq^{2n/3}$ codewords exist. So optimal $\overline{2}$-separable codes behave neither like $2$-frameproof nor $1$-frameproof codes. Also, the Gao--Ge bound is strengthened to show that a $q$-ary $\overline{2}$-separable code of length $n$ can have at most \[ q^{\lceil 2n/3\rceil}+\tfrac{1}{2}q^{\lfloor n/3\rfloor}(q^{\lfloor n/3\rfloor}-1) \] codewords.

Coloring so that no Pythagorean Triple is Monochromatic
We address the question of the "partition regularity" of the Pythagorean equation a^2+b^2=c^2; in particular, can the natural numbers be assigned a 2-coloring, so that no Pythagorean triple (i.e., a solution to the equation) is monochromatic? We prove that the hypergraph of Pythagorean triples can contain no Steiner triple systems, a natural obstruction to 2-colorability. Then, after transforming the question into one about 3-CNF satisfiability and applying some reductions, a SAT solver is used to find a 2-coloring for {1,...,7664}. Work continues as we seek to improve the reductions and extend the computation.

Parameters for minimal unsatisfiability: Smarandache primitive numbers and full clauses
We establish a new bridge between propositional logic and elementary number theory. The main objects are "minimally unsatisfiable clause-sets", short "MUs", unsatisfiable conjunctive normal forms rendered satisfiable by elimination of any clause. In other words, irredundant coverings of the boolean hypercube by subcubes. The main parameter for MUs is the "deficiency" k, the difference between the number of clauses and the number of variables (the difference between the number of elements in the covering and the dimension of the hypercube), and the fundamental fact is that k >= 1 holds. A "full clause" in an MU contains all variables (corresponding to a singleton in the covering). We show the lower bound S_2(k) <= FCM(k), where FCM(k) is the maximal number of full clauses in MUs of deficiency k, while S_2(k) is the smallest n such that 2^k divides n!. The proof rests on two methods: On the logic-combinatorial side, applying subsumption resolution and its inverse, a fundamental method since Boole in 1854 introduced the "expansion method". On the arithmetical side, analysing certain recursions, combining an application-specific recursion with a recursion from the field of meta-Fibonacci sequences (indeed S_2 equals twice the Conolly sequence). A further tool is the consideration of unsatisfiable "hitting clause-sets" (UHITs), special cases of MUs, which correspond to the partitions of the boolean hypercube by subcubes; they are also known as orthogonal or disjoint DNF tautologies. We actually show the sharper lower bound S_2(k) <= FCH(k), where FCH(k) is the maximal number of full clauses in UHITs of deficiency k. We conjecture that for all k holds S_2(k) = FCH(k), which would establish a surprising connection between the extremal combinatorics of (un)satisfiability and elementary number theory. We apply the lower bound to analyse the structure of MUs and UHITs.
