The game of cops and robber has been studied for many years. Denoting $\mathsf{Forb}(4K_1)$ to be the family of all graphs that contain no induced subgraph isomorphic to $4K_1$ (e.g., with independence number less than $4$), we prove that for any $G\in\mathsf{Forb}(4K_1)$, we have $c(G)\leq 2$, where $c(\cdot)$ is the cop number. This improves a lower bound of a question proposed by Char et al. in a recent paper (arxiv, 2025), that any counterexample of a conjecture raised by Turcotte (2022) when $p=4$ must have at least 14 vertices.
Optimal codes and arcs for the generalized Hamming weights
This text contains some notes on the Griesmer bound. In particular, we give a geometric proof of the Griesmer bound for the generalized weights and show that a Solomon--Stiffler type construction attains it if the minimum distance is sufficiently large. We also determine the parameters of optimal binary codes for dimensions at most seven and the optimal ternary codes for dimensions at most five.
Solution to a problem on isolation of cliques in uniform hypergraphs
A copy of a hypergraph $F$ is called an $F$-copy. Let $K_k^r$ denote the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph whose vertex set is $[k] = \{1, \dots, k\}$ (that is, the edges of $K_k^r$ are the $r$-element subsets of $[k]$). Given an $r$-uniform $n$-vertex hypergraph $H$, the $K_k^r$-isolation number of $H$, denoted by $ι(H, K_k^r)$, is the size of a smallest subset $D$ of the vertex set of $H$ such that the closed neighbourhood $N[D]$ of $D$ intersects the vertex sets of the $K_k^r$-copies contained by $H$ (equivalently, $H-N[D]$ contains no $K_k^r$-copy). In this note, we show that if $2 \leq r \leq k$ and $H$ is connected, then $ι(H, K_k^r) \leq \frac{n}{k+1}$ unless $H$ is a $K_k^r$-copy or $k = r = 2$ and $H$ is a $5$-cycle. This solves a recent problem of Li, Zhang and Ye. The result for $r = 2$ (that is, $H$ is a graph) was proved by Fenech, Kaemawichanurat and the author, and is used to prove the result for any $r$. The extremal structures for $r = 2$ were determined by various authors. We use this to determine the extremal structures for any $r$.
Spanning Components and Surfaces Under Minimum Vertex Degree
We study minimum vertex-degree conditions in 3-uniform hypergraphs for (tight) spanning components and (combinatorial) surfaces. Our main results show that a 3-uniform hypergraph $G$ on $n$ vertices contains a spanning component if $δ_1(G) \gtrsim \tfrac{1}{2} \binom{n}{2}$ and a spanning copy of any surface if $δ_1(G) \gtrsim \tfrac{5}{9} \binom{n}{2}$, which in both cases is asymptotically optimal. This extends the work of Georgakopoulos, Haslegrave, Montgomery, and Narayanan who determined the corresponding minimum codegree conditions in this setting.
Coloring Hardness on Low Twin-Width Graphs

As the class $\mathcal T_4$ of graphs of twin-width at most 4 contains every finite subgraph of the infinite grid and every graph obtained by subdividing each edge of an $n$-vertex graph at least $2 \log n$ times, most NP-hard graph problems, like Max Independent Set, Dominating Set, Hamiltonian Cycle, remain so on $\mathcal T_4$. However, Min Coloring and k-Coloring are easy on both families because they are 2-colorable and 3-colorable, respectively.
We show that Min Coloring is NP-hard on the class $\mathcal T_3$ of graphs of twin-width at most 3. This is the first hardness result on $\mathcal T_3$ for a problem that is easy on cographs (twin-width 0), on trees (whose twin-width is at most 2), and on unit circular-arc graphs (whose twin-width is at most 3). We also show that for every $k \geqslant 3$, k-Coloring is NP-hard on $\mathcal T_4$. We finally make two observations: (1) there are currently very few problems known to be in P on $\mathcal T_d$ (graphs of twin-width at most $d$) and NP-hard on $\mathcal T_{d+1}$ for some nonnegative integer $d$, and (2) unlike $\mathcal T_4$, which contains every graph as an induced minor, the class $\mathcal T_3$ excludes a fixed planar graph as an induced minor; thus it may be viewed as a special case (or potential counterexample) for conjectures about classes excluding a (planar) induced minor. These observations are accompanied by several open questions.
Proper conflict-free choosability of planar graphs
A proper conflict-free coloring of a graph is a proper vertex coloring wherein each non-isolated vertex's open neighborhood contains at least one color appearing exactly once. For a non-negative integer $k$, a graph $G$ is said to be proper conflict-free (degree+$k$)-choosable if given any list assignment $L$ for $G$ where $|L(v)| = d(v) + k$ holds for every vertex $v \in V(G)$, there exists a proper conflict-free coloring $φ$ of $G$ such that $φ(v) \in L(v)$ for all $v \in V(G)$. Recently, Kashima, Škrekovski, and Xu proposed two related conjectures on proper conflict-free choosability: the first asserts the existence of an absolute constant $k$ such that every graph is proper conflict-free (degree+$k$)-choosable, while the second strengthens this claim by restricting to connected graphs other than the cycle of length 5 and reducing the constant to $k=2$. In this paper, we confirm the second conjecture for three graph classes: $K_4$-minor-free graphs with maximum degree at most 4, outer-1-planar graphs with maximum degree at most 4, and planar graphs with girth at least 12; we also confirm the first conjecture for these same graph classes, in addition to all outer-1-planar graphs (without degree constraints). Moreover, we prove that planar graphs with girth at least 12 and outer-1-planar graphs are proper conflict-free $6$-choosable.
A point in the interior of the convex hulls
Steinitz's theorem states that if a point $a \in \mathrm{int\,conv\,} X$ for a set $X \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, then $X$ contains a subset $Y$ of size at most $2d$ such that $a \in \mathrm{int\,conv\,}Y$. The bound $2d$ is best possible here. We prove the colourful version of this theorem and characterize the cases when exactly $2d$ sets are needed.
The codegree Turán density of tight cycles
The codegree Turán density $γ(F)$ of a $k$-uniform hypergraph $F$ is the minimum real number $γ\ge 0$ such that every $k$-uniform hypergraph on sufficiently many $n$ vertices, in which every set of $k-1$ vertices is contained in at least $(γ+o(1))n$ edges, contains a copy of $F$. A recent result of Piga, Sanhueza-Matamala, and Schacht determines that $γ(C_{\ell}^3)=\frac13$ for every $3$-uniform tight cycle $C_\ell^3$ of length $\ell$, where $\ell \ge \ell_0$ and $\ell$ is not divisible by $3$. In this paper, we investigate the codegree Turán density of $k$-uniform tight cycles $C_\ell^k$. We establish improved upper and lower bounds on $γ(C_{\ell}^k)$ for general $\ell$ not divisible by $k$. These results yield the following consequences:
1). For any prime $k \ge 3$, we show that $γ(C_{\ell}^k)=\frac13$ for all sufficiently large $\ell$ not divisible by $k$, generalizing the above theorem of Piga et al.
2). For all $k \ge 3$, we determine the exact value of $γ(C_{\ell}^k)$ for integers $\ell$ not divisible by $k$ in a set of (natural) density at least $\frac{\varphi(k)}{k}$, where $\varphi(\cdot)$ denotes Euler's totient function.
3). We give a complete answer to a question of Han, Lo, and Sanhueza-Matamala concerning the tightness of their construction for $γ(C_{\ell}^k)$.
Moreover, our results also determine the codegree Turán density of $C_\ell^{k-}$, that is, the $k$-uniform tight cycle of length $\ell$ with one edge removed, for a new set of integers $\ell$ of positive density for every $k \ge 3$. Our upper bound result is based on a structural characterization of $C_{\ell}^k$-free $k$-uniform hypergraphs with high minimum codegree, while the lower bounds are derived from a novel construction model, coupled with the arithmetic properties of the integers $k$ and $\ell$.
Spectral supersaturation for color-critical graphs
A graph is color-critical if it contains an edge whose deletion reduces its chromatic number. This class of graphs, including cliques and odd cycles, plays a central role in extremal graph theory. In this paper, following an influential line of research initiated by Bollobás-Nikiforov, we study the spectral supersaturation problem for color-critical graphs. Let $T_{n,r}$ be the $r$-partite Turán graph, let $\mathcal{T}_{n,r,q}$ denote the family of graphs obtained from $T_{n,r}$ by adding $q$ edges, and let $λ(G)$ be the spectral radius of a graph $G$. We first prove that for any color-critical graph $F$ with chromatic number $r+1$, there exists $δ_F > 0$ such that for sufficiently large $n$ and all $1 \leq q \leq δ_F \sqrt{n}$, any $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $λ(G) \ge \min_{T \in \mathcal{T}_{n,r,q}} λ(T)$ contains at least $q \cdot c(n,F)$ copies of $F$, where $c(n,F)$ denotes the minimum number of copies of $F$ created by adding a single edge to $T_{n,r}$; moreover, any extremal graph $G$ must belong to $ \mathcal{T}_{n,r,q}$.Next, we prove a spectral supersaturation result for the analogous condition $λ(G) \ge \max_{T \in \mathcal{T}_{n,r,q}} λ(T)$, valid for all $1 \leq q \leq δ_F n$. Together, these results provide a complete resolution to a problem proposed by Ning-Zhai, and establish a spectral counterpart to the well-known results of Mubayi and Pikhurko-Yilma in the extremal supersaturation setting. A notable feature of our first result is that the restriction $q = O(\sqrt{n})$ is tight up to a constant factor, in contrast to the linear bounds provided by other settings discussed above. As applications, we extend a result of Liu-Mubayi, and solve a related conjecture by Li-Lu-Peng.
Tiling Triangles with $2π/3$ Angles
Motivated by a question of Erdös and inquiries by Beeson and Laczkovich, we explore the possible $N$ for which a triangle $T$ can tile into $N$ congruent copies of a triangle $R$. The \emph{reptile} cases (where $T$ is similar to $R$) and the \emph{commensurable-angles} cases (where all angles of $R$ are rational multiples of $π$) are well-understood. We tackle the most interesting remaining case, which is when $R$ contains an angle of $2π/3$ and when $T$ is one of $6$ ``sporadic'' specific triangles, of which only $2$ were known to have constructions. For each of these, we create a family of constructions and conjecture that they are the only possible $N$ that occur for these triangles.
On distance transitive graphs and $4$-geodesic transitive graphs
For an integer $s\geq1$ and a graph $Γ$, a path $(u_0, u_1, \ldots, u_{s})$ composed of vertices of $Γ$ is called an {\em $s$-geodesic} if it is a shortest path between $u_0$ and $u_s$. We say that $Γ$ is {\em $s$-geodesic transitive} if for each $i\leq s$, $Γ$ contains at least one $i$-geodesic, and its automorphism group acts transitively on the set of all $i$-geodesics. In this paper, by using the classification of almost simple primitive groups of rank $4$, we first classify all distance transitive graphs of diameter $3$. The resulting classification encompasses $73$ classes of graphs. As an application of this result, we have extended the main result of Jin and Tan [J. Algebra Combin. 60 (2024) 949--963]. More precisely, for a connected $(G,4)$-geodesic transitive graph with a nontrivial intransitive normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ that has at least $3$ orbits, where $G$ is an automorphism group of $Γ$, it is shown that either both $Γ$ and $Γ_N$ are known, or $Γ$ and $Γ_N$ have the same girth and $Γ_N$ is $(G/N,4)$-geodesic transitive.
Tableaux and orbit harmonics quotients for finite transformation monoids

We extend Grood's tableau construction of irreducible representations of the rook monoid and Steinberg's analogous result for the full transformation monoid. Our approach is characteristic-free and applies to any submonoid $\mathcal{M}(n)$ of the partial transformation monoid on an $n$-element set that contains the symmetric group. To achieve this, we introduce and study a functor from the category of rational representations of the monoid of $n \times n$ matrices to the category of finite dimensional representations of $\mathcal{M}(n)$. We establish two branching rules. Our main results describe graded module structures of orbit harmonics quotients for the rook, partial transformation, and full transformation monoids. This yields analogs of the Cauchy decomposition for polynomial rings in $n\times n$ variables.
Connectivity of $p$-subgroup posets with irreducible characters
Let $G$ be a finite group. For a prime $p$ and an integer $e \geq 0$, we denote by $Γ_{p,e}(G)$ the set of all pairs $(H, \varphi)$, where $H$ is a $p$-subgroup of $G$ of order greater than $p^e$ and $\varphi$ is a complex irreducible character of $H$. In this paper, we investigate the connected components of the poset $Γ_{p,e}(G)$. For the case $e = 0$, we prove that $Γ_{p,0}(G)$ is disconnected if and only if either $G$ has a strongly $p$-embedded subgroup, or every Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ contains a unique subgroup of order $p$. Furthermore, for $e = 1$ and $G$ a $p$-group, we show that the number of connected components of $Γ_{p,1}(G)$ equals the order of the intersection of all subgroups of $G$ of order $p^2$.
Finite type and completeness of $g$-fans
We study the $g$-fan associated with a skew-symmetrizable matrix in the sense of cluster algebras. We show that a skew-symmetrizable matrix is of finite type if and only if its $g$-fan is complete; equivalently (as we show), its support contains all lattice points.
On the size edge-ordered Ramsey numbers of graphs
For edge-ordered graphs $G^{\prec}$ and $H^{\prec}$, the size edge-ordered Ramsey number $\hat{r}_{\text{edge}}(G^{\prec}, H^{\prec})$ is defined as the smallest integer $m$ for which there exists an edge-ordered graph $F^{\prec}$ (with underlying graph $F$) having $m$ edges, such that every $2$-coloring of the edges of $F^{\prec}$ contains a monochromatic edge-ordered subgraph isomorphic to $G^{\prec}$ or a monochromatic edge-ordered subgraph isomorphic to $H^{\prec}$. Fox and Li posed a foundational question: which families of edge-ordered graphs have linear or near-linear size edge-ordered Ramsey numbers? In this paper, we apply Szemerédi's regularity lemma to prove that, even for sparse graph families, specifically the well-defined class of edge-ordered book graphs, the size edge-ordered Ramsey numbers of this family exhibit non-linear growth. Furthermore, we show that three families of edge-ordered graphs exhibit linear or near-linear size edge-ordered Ramsey numbers.
Littlewood-Offord bounds on the symmetric groups and applications
The anti-concentration phenomenon in probability theory has been intensively studied in recent years, with applications across many areas of mathematics. In most existing works, the ambient probability space is a product space generated by independent random variables. In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of anti-concentration when the ambient space is the symmetric group, equipped with the uniform measure. Concretely, we focus on the random sum $S_π = \sum_{i=1}^{n} w_i\, v_{π(i)}$, where $w=(w_1,\dots,w_n)$ and $v=(v_1,\dots,v_n)$ are fixed vectors and $π$ is a uniformly random permutation.
The paper contains several new results, addressing both discrete and continuous anti-concentration phenomena. On the discrete side, we establish a near-optimal structural characterization of the vectors $w$ and $v$ under the assumption that the concentration probability $\sup_x P(S_π=x)$ is polynomially large. As applications, we derive and strengthen a number of previous results. In particular, we show that if both $w$ and $v$ have distinct entries, then $\sup_x P(S_π=x) \le n^{-5/2+o(1)}$. This bound serves as a permutation-space analogue of the classical Erdős--Moser bound in the product-space setting and answers a question posed by Alon--Pohoata--Zhu.
From the continuous perspective, we study the small-ball event $|S_π-L|\le δ$. We establish sharp bounds in various settings, including results exhibiting sub-gaussian decay in $L$. With additional effort, we are also able to treat the joint distribution of these events. Moreover, we provide a characterization of the vectors $w$ and $v$ for which these small-ball probabilities are large. As an application, we prove that the number of extremal points of random permutation polynomials is bounded by $O(\log n)$, extending results of S{ö}ze on the number of real roots.
Choosability of multipartite hypergraphs
A $k$-uniform hypergraph (or $k$-graph) $H = (V, E)$ is $k$-partite if $V$ can be partitioned into $k$ sets $V_1, \ldots, V_k$ such that each edge in $E$ contains precisely one vertex from each $V_i$. We show that $k$-partite $k$-graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ are $q$-choosable for $q \geq \left(\frac{4}{5}(k-1 + o(1))Δ/\log Δ\right)^{1/(k-1)}$. Our proof yields an efficient randomized algorithm for finding such a coloring, which shows that the conjectured algorithmic barrier for coloring pseudorandom $k$-graphs does not apply to $k$-partite $k$-graphs.
Harmonic LCM patterns and sunflower-free capacity
Fix an integer $k\ge 3$. Call a set $A\subseteq [N]$ LCM-$k$-free if it does not contain distinct $a_1,\dots,a_k$ such that $\mathrm{lcm}(a_i,a_j)$ is the same for all $1\le i<j\le k$. Define $$ f_k(N):=\max\left\{\sum_{a\in A}\frac1a: A\subseteq [N] \text{ is LCM-$k$-free}\right\}. $$ Addressing a problem of Erdős, we prove an explicit unconditional lower bound $$ f_k(N)\ge (\log N)^{c_k-o(1)}, \qquad c_k:=\frac{k-2}{e((k-2)!)^{1/(k-2)}}. $$ Let $F_k(n)$ denote the maximum size of a $k$-sunflower-free family of subsets of $[n]$, and define the Erdős--Szemerédi $k$-sunflower-free capacity by $μ_k^{\mathrm S}:=\limsup_{n\to\infty}F_k(n)^{1/n}$. Motivated by a remark of Erdős relating this problem to the sunflower conjecture, we show that $$ (\log N)^{\logμ_k^{\mathrm S}-o(1)} \le f_k(N) \ll (\log N)^{μ_k^{\mathrm S}-1+o(1)}. $$ Furthermore, we show that the Erdős--Szemerédi sunflower conjecture fails for this fixed $k$ (i.e. $μ_k^{\mathrm S}=2$) if and only if $f_k(N)=(\log N)^{1-o(1)}$.
Clique factors in random samplings of regular graphs
We show that for any integer $r\ge 2$, there exists a constant $c>0$ such that for every sufficiently large integer $n$, every $((r-1)n+1)$-regular graph $G$ on $rn$ vertices has at least $c2^{rn}$ subsets $S\subseteq V(G)$ such that $G[S]$ contains a $K_r$-factor. This confirms a conjecture of Draganić, Keevash and Müyesser for large $n$ [Cyclic subsets in regular Dirac graphs. Int. Math. Res. Not., 2025(14): 1-16, 2025].
Disproof of the Odd Hadwiger Conjecture
We prove that there exist graphs which do not contain $K_t$ as an odd minor and whose chromatic number is at least $(\frac 32-o(1))t$. This disproves, in a strong form, the odd Hadwiger conjecture of Gerards and Seymour from 1993.
