Representative set statements for delta-matroids and the Mader delta-matroid
We present representative sets-style statements for linear delta-matroids, which are set systems that generalize matroids, with important connections to matching theory and graph embeddings. Furthermore, our proof uses a new approach of sieving polynomial families, which generalizes the linear algebra approach of the representative sets lemma to a setting of bounded-degree polynomials. The representative sets statements for linear delta-matroids then follow by analyzing the Pfaffian of the skew-symmetric matrix representing the delta-matroid. Applying the same framework to the determinant instead of the Pfaffian recovers the representative sets lemma for linear matroids. Altogether, this significantly extends the toolbox available for kernelization.
As an application, we show an exact sparsification result for Mader networks: Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph and $\mathcal{T}$ a partition of a set of terminals $T \subseteq V(G)$, $|T|=k$. A $\mathcal{T}$-path in $G$ is a path with endpoints in distinct parts of $\mathcal{T}$ and internal vertices disjoint from $T$. In polynomial time, we can derive a graph $G'=(V',E')$ with $T \subseteq V(G')$, such that for every subset $S \subseteq T$ there is a packing of $\mathcal{T}$-paths with endpoints $S$ in $G$ if and only if there is one in $G'$, and $|V(G')|=O(k^3)$. This generalizes the (undirected version of the) cut-covering lemma, which corresponds to the case that $\mathcal{T}$ contains only two blocks.
To prove the Mader network sparsification result, we furthermore define the class of Mader delta-matroids, and show that they have linear representations. This should be of independent interest.
Rank functions and invariants of delta-matroids
In this note, we give a rank function axiomatization for delta-matroids and study the corresponding rank generating function. We relate an evaluation of the rank generating function to the number of independent sets of the delta-matroid, and we prove a log-concavity result for that evaluation using the theory of Lorentzian polynomials.
Characterizations of the set of integer points in an integral bisubmodular polyhedron
In this note, we provide two characterizations of the set of integer points in an integral bisubmodular polyhedron. Our characterizations do not require the assumption that a given set satisfies the hole-freeness, i.e., the set of integer points in its convex hull coincides with the original set. One is a natural multiset generalization of the exchange axiom of a delta-matroid, and the other comes from the notion of the tangent cone of an integral bisubmodular polyhedron.
Jump-systems of $T$-paths

Jump systems are sets of integer vectors satisfying a simple axiom, generalizing matroids, also delta-matroids, and well-kown combinatorial examples such as degree sequences of subgraphs of a graph. It is useful to know if a set of vectors defined from combinatorial structures is a jump system: this has consequences for optimizing on the set, or on some derived sets of vectors. In this note we are mainly concerned in telling our proof of the following more than two decades old fact and its original, elementary proof for an example different from degree sequences:
{\em Given an udirected graph $G=(V,E)$ and $T\subseteq V$, the vectors $m$ indexed by $T$ for which there exist a set of openly disjoint $T$-paths so that each $t\in T$ is the endpoint of exactly $m(t)$ paths forms a jump system. The same holds for edge-disjoint $T$-paths.}
We are also exhibiting the context and some consequences of this fact, with some pointers to recent developments, among them ro another proof by Iwata and Yokoi, to some related jump system intersection theorems and to some open problems.

Gross, Mansour and Tucker introduced the partial-twuality polynomial of a ribbon graph. Chumutov and Vignes-Tourneret posed a problem: it would be interesting to know whether the partial duality polynomial and the related conjectures would make sense for general delta-matroids. In this paper we consider analogues of partial-twuality polynomials for delta-matroids. Various possible properties of partial-twuality polynomials of set systems are studied. We discuss the numerical implications of partial-twualities on a single element and prove that the intersection graphs can determine the partial-twuality polynomials of bouquets and normal binary delta-matroids, respectively. Finally, we give a characterization of vf-safe delta-matroids whose partial-twuality polynomials have only one term.

We establish a connection between the algebraic geometry of the type B permutohedral toric variety and the combinatorics of delta-matroids. Using this connection, we compute the volume and lattice point counts of type B generalized permutohedra. Applying tropical Hodge theory to a new framework of "tautological classes of delta-matroids," modeled after certain vector bundles associated to realizable delta-matroids, we establish the log-concavity of a Tutte-like invariant for a broad family of delta-matroids that includes all realizable delta-matroids. Our results include new log-concavity statements for all (ordinary) matroids as special cases.

The twist polynomial of a delta-matroid was recently introduced by Yan and Jin, who proved a characterization of binary delta-matroids with twist monomials. In this paper, we extend this result to all delta-matroids by proving that any delta-matroid with a twist monomial must be binary.

Let $r \leqslant n$ be nonnegative integers, and let $N = \binom{n}{r} - 1$. For a matroid $M$ of rank $r$ on the finite set $E = [n]$ and a partial field $k$ in the sense of Semple--Whittle, it is known that the following are equivalent: (a) $M$ is representable over $k$; (b) there is a point $p = (p_J) \in {\bf P}^N(k)$ with support $M$ (meaning that $\text{Supp}(p) := \{J \in \binom{E}{r} \; \vert \; p_J \ne 0\}$ of $p$ is the set of bases of $M$) satisfying the Grassmann-Plücker equations; and (c) there is a point $p = (p_J) \in {\bf P}^N(k)$ with support $M$ satisfying just the 3-term Grassmann-Plücker equations. Moreover, by a theorem of P. Nelson, almost all matroids (meaning asymptotically 100%) are not representable over any partial field. We prove analogues of these facts for Lagrangian orthogonal matroids in the sense of Gelfand-Serganova, which are equivalent to even Delta-matroids in the sense of Bouchet.

Recently, we introduced the twist polynomials of delta-matroids and gave a characterization of even normal binary delta-matroids whose twist polynomials have only one term and posed a problem: what would happen for odd binary delta-matroids? In this paper, we show that a normal binary delta-matroid whose twist polynomials have only one term if and only if each connected component of the intersection graph of the delta-matroid is either a complete graph of odd order or a single vertex with a loop.

For every finite simple connected graph $G = (V,E)$, we introduce an invariant, its blowup-polynomial $p_G(\{ n_v : v \in V \})$. This is obtained by dividing the determinant of the distance matrix of its blowup graph $G[{\bf n}]$ (containing $n_v$ copies of $v$) by an exponential factor. We show that $p_G({\bf n})$ is indeed a polynomial function in the sizes $n_v$, which is moreover multi-affine and real-stable. This associates a hitherto unexplored delta-matroid to each graph $G$; and we provide a second unexplored one for each tree. As another consequence, we obtain a new characterization of complete multipartite graphs, via the homogenization at $-1$ of $p_G$ being completely/strongly log-concave, i.e., Lorentzian. (These results extend to weighted graphs.) Finally, we show $p_G$ is indeed a graph invariant, i.e., $p_G$ and its symmetries (in the variables ${\bf n}$) recover $G$ and its isometries, respectively.

The handle slide operation, originally defined for ribbon graphs, was extended to delta-matroids by I. Moffatt and E. Mphako-Bandab, who show that, using a delta-matroid analogue of handle slides, every binary delta-matroid in which the empty set is feasible can be written in a canonical form analogous to the canonical form for one-vertex maps on a surface. We provide a canonical form for binary delta-matroids without restriction on the feasibility of the empty set.

We introduce a new one-variable polynomial invariant of graphs, which we call the skew characteristic polynomial. For an oriented simple graph, this is just the characteristic polynomial of its anti-symmetric adjacency matrix. For nonoriented simple graphs the definition is different, but for a certain class of graphs (namely, for intersection graphs of chord diagrams), it gives the same answer if we endow such a graph with an orientation induced by the chord diagram. We prove that this invariant satisfies Vassiliev's $4$-term relations and determines therefore a finite type knot invariant. We investigate the behaviour of the polynomial with respect to the Hopf algebra structure on the space of graphs and show that it takes a constant value on any primitive element in this Hopf algebra. We also provide a two-variable extension of the skew characteristic polynomial to embedded graphs and delta-matroids. The $4$-term relations for the extended polynomial prove that it determines a finite type invariant of multicomponent links.

Recently, Gross, Mansour and Tucker introduced the partial duality polynomial of a ribbon graph and posed a conjecture that there is no orientable ribbon graph whose partial duality polynomial has only one non-constant term. We found an infinite family of counterexamples for the conjecture and showed that essentially these are the only counterexamples. This is also obtained independently by Chumutov and Vignes-Tourneret and they posed a problem: it would be interesting to know whether the partial duality polynomial and the related conjectures would make sence for general delta-matroids. In this paper, we show that partial duality polynomials have delta-matroid analogues. We introduce the twist polynomials of delta-matroids and discuss its basic properties for delta-matroids. We give a characterization of even normal binary delta-matroids whose twist polynomials have only one term and then prove that the twist polynomial of a normal binary delta-matroid contains non-zero constant term if and only if its intersection graph is bipartite.
Multivariate blowup-polynomials of graphs
In recent joint work (2021), we introduced a novel multivariate polynomial attached to every metric space - in particular, to every finite simple connected graph $G$ - and showed it has several attractive properties. First, it is multi-affine and real-stable (leading to a hitherto unstudied delta-matroid for each graph $G$). Second, the polynomial specializes to (a transform of) the characteristic polynomial $χ_{D_G}$ of the distance matrix $D_G$; as well as recovers the entire graph, where $χ_{D_G}$ cannot do so. Third, the polynomial encodes the determinants of a family of graphs formed from $G$, called the blowups of $G$.
In this short note, we exhibit the applicability of these tools and techniques to other graph-matrices and their characteristic polynomials. As a particular case, we will see that the adjacency characteristic polynomial $χ_{A_G}$ is in fact the shadow of a richer multivariate blowup-polynomial, which is similarly multi-affine and real-stable. Moreover, this polynomial encodes not only the aforementioned three properties, but also yields additional information for specific families of graphs.

To every finite metric space $X$, including all connected unweighted graphs with the minimum edge-distance metric, we attach an invariant that we call its blowup-polynomial $p_X(\{ n_x : x \in X \})$. This is obtained from the blowup $X[{\bf n}]$ - which contains $n_x$ copies of each point $x$ - by computing the determinant of the distance matrix of $X[{\bf n}]$ and removing an exponential factor. We prove that as a function of the sizes $n_x$, $p_X({\bf n})$ is a polynomial, is multi-affine, and is real-stable. This naturally associates a hitherto unstudied delta-matroid to each metric space $X$; we produce another novel delta-matroid for each tree, which interestingly does not generalize to all graphs.
We next specialize to the case of $X = G$ a connected unweighted graph - so $p_G$ is "partially symmetric" in $\{ n_v : v \in V(G) \}$ - and show three further results: (a) We show that the polynomial $p_G$ is indeed a graph invariant, in that $p_G$ and its symmetries recover the graph $G$ and its isometries, respectively. (b) We show that the univariate specialization $u_G(x) := p_G(x,\dots,x)$ is a transform of the characteristic polynomial of the distance matrix $D_G$; this connects the blowup-polynomial of $G$ to the well-studied "distance spectrum" of $G$. (c) We obtain a novel characterization of complete multipartite graphs, as precisely those for which the "homogenization at $-1$" of $p_G({\bf n})$ is real-stable (equivalently, Lorentzian, or strongly/completely log-concave), if and only if the normalization of $p_G(-{\bf n})$ is strongly Rayleigh.

For an abelian group $Γ$, a $Γ$-labelled graph is a graph whose vertices are labelled by elements of $Γ$. We prove that a certain collection of edge sets of a $Γ$-labelled graph forms a delta-matroid, which we call a $Γ$-graphic delta-matroid, and provide a polynomial-time algorithm to solve the separation problem, which allows us to apply the symmetric greedy algorithm of Bouchet to find a maximum weight feasible set in such a delta-matroid. We present two algorithmic applications on graphs; Maximum Weight Packing of Trees of Order Not Divisible by $k$ and Maximum Weight $S$-Tree Packing. We also discuss various properties of $Γ$-graphic delta-matroids.

We introduce delta-graphic matroids, which are matroids whose bases form graphic delta-matroids. The class of delta-graphic matroids contains graphic matroids as well as cographic matroids and is a proper subclass of the class of regular matroids. We give a structural characterization of the class of delta-graphic matroids. We also show that every forbidden minor for the class of delta-graphic matroids has at most $48$ elements.

An equitable partition into branchings in a digraph is a partition of the arc set into branchings such that the sizes of any two branchings differ at most by one. For a digraph whose arc set can be partitioned into $k$ branchings, there always exists an equitable partition into $k$ branchings. In this paper, we present two extensions of equitable partitions into branchings in digraphs: those into matching forests in mixed graphs; and into $b$-branchings in digraphs. For matching forests, Király and Yokoi (2022) considered a tricriteria equitability based on the sizes of the matching forest, and the matching and branching therein. In contrast to this, we introduce a single-criterion equitability based on the number of covered vertices, which is plausible in the light of the delta-matroid structure of matching forests. While the existence of this equitable partition can be derived from a lemma in Király and Yokoi, we present its direct and simpler proof. For $b$-branchings, we define an equitability notion based on the size of the $b$-branching and the indegrees of all vertices, and prove that an equitable partition always exists. We then derive the integer decomposition property of the associated polytopes.

Delta-matroid theory is often thought of as a generalization of topological graph theory. It is well-known that an orientable embedded graph is bipartite if and only if its Petrie dual is orientable. In this paper, we first introduce the concepts of Eulerian and bipartite delta-matroids and then extend the result from embedded graphs to arbitrary binary delta-matroids. The dual of any bipartite embedded graph is Eulerian. We also extend the result from embedded graphs to the class of delta-matroids that arise as twists of binary matroids. Several related results are also obtained.
