Riordan Paths and Derangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
Riordan paths are Motzkin paths without horizontal steps on the x-axis. We establish a correspondence between Riordan paths and $(321,3\bar{1}42)$-avoiding derangements. We also present a combinatorial proof of a recurrence relation for the Riordan numbers in the spirit of the Foata-Zeilberger proof of a recurrence relation on the Schröder numbers.

Two identities of derangements
In this note, we present two new identities for derangements. As a corollary, we have a combinatorial proof of the irreducibility of the standard representation of symmetric groups.

Derangements in Symmetric Cost Matrices
Let M be an n X n symmetric cost matrix. Assume that D is a derangement in M, i.e.,a set of disjoint cycles consisting of edges that contains all of the n points of M. The modified Floyd-Warshall algorithm applied to (D')^-1(M^-)A^- (where A is an asymmetric cost matrix containing D', a derangement)yielded a solution to the Assignment Problem in O((n^2)logn) running time. Here, applying a variation of the modified F-W to (D^-1)M^-1, we can obtain D = D_FWABS, the smallest-valued derangement obtainable using the modified F-W. Let T_TSPOPT be an optimal tour in M. We give conditions for obtaining D_ABSOLUTE, the smallest-valued derangement obtainable in M, where |D_ABSOLUTE| <= |T_TSPOPT|.

On Obtaining a Minimally-Valued Derangement in a Symmetric Cost Matrix
Let M be an n X n symmetric cost matrix. Assume that D is a derangement of edges in M, i.e., a set of point-disjoint cycles containing all of the n points of M.The modified Floyd-Warshall algorithm applied to ((D')^-1)A^- (where A is an asymmetric cost matrix containing D', a derangement)yielded a solution to the Assignment Problem in O((n^2)logn) running time. Here, applying a variation of the modified F-W algorithm to D^-1)M^-, we may possibly obtain a smaller-valued derangement than D consisting of entries in M. A minimally-valued derangement would be of great value as a good and natural lower bound for an optimal tour in M.

Extending Fine sequences: a link with forbidden patterns
We propose a natural, bivariate, generalization of the nonsingular similarity relations considered by T. Fine. We also provide an enumeration formulae and a generating tree for those relations. The latter allow us to give a new bijection between 321-avoiding derangements and Fine sequences. Moreover, we establish that two special cases are in a one-to-one correspondence with subsets of permutations characterized by forbidden subsequences on the symmetrical group. All our results are established using the technique of generating tree, thus giving entirely bijective proofs.

Derangement characters of the full general linear group
Published • View PublicationBIB
We focus on derangement characters of $GL(n,q)$ which depend solely on the dimension of the space of fixed vectors. This family includes Thoma characters which become asymptotically irreducible as $n\to\infty$. We find explicit decomposition of Thoma characters into irreducibles, construct further derangement characters and seek for extremes in the family of derangement characters.

Derangements and asymptotics of Laplace transforms of polynomials
We use a probabilistic approach to describe the behavior as $n -> \infty$ of the Laplace transforms of $P^n$, where $P$ a fixed complex polynomial. As a consequence we obtain a new elementary proof of an result of Gillis-Ismail-Offer in the combinatorial theory of derangements.

Derangements in simple and primitive groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the proportion of fixed point free permutations (derangements) in finite transitive permutation groups. This article is the first in a series where we prove a conjecture of Shalev that the proportion of such elements is bounded away from zero for a simple finite group. In fact, there are much stronger results. This article focuses on finite Chevalley groups of bounded rank. We also discuss derangements in algebraic groups and in more general primitive groups. These results have applications in questions about probabilistic generation of finite simple groups and maps between varieties over finite fields.

Derangements and tensor powers of adjoint modules for sl_n
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics 16 (2002), 31-42 • View PublicationBIB
We obtain the decomposition of the tensor space $\mathfrak{sl}_n^{\otimes k}$ as a module for $\mathfrak{sl}_n$, find an explicit formula for the multiplicities of its irreducible summands, and (when $n \ge 2k$) describe the centralizer algebra $C=End_{\mathfrak{sl}_n}(\mathfrak{sl}_n^{\otimes k})$ and its representations. The multiplicities of the irreducible summands are derangement numbers in several important instances, and the dimension of $C$ is given by the number of derangements of a set of $2k$ elements.

Semigroups, rings, and Markov chains
Published • View PublicationBIB
We analyze random walks on a class of semigroups called ``left-regular bands''. These walks include the hyperplane chamber walks of Bidigare, Hanlon, and Rockmore. Using methods of ring theory, we show that the transition matrices are diagonalizable and we calculate the eigenvalues and multiplicities. The methods lead to explicit formulas for the projections onto the eigenspaces. As examples of these semigroup walks, we construct a random walk on the maximal chains of any distributive lattice, as well as two random walks associated with any matroid. The examples include a q-analogue of the Tsetlin library. The multiplicities of the eigenvalues in the matroid walks are ``generalized derangement numbers'', which may be of independent interest.
