Wreath determinants for group-subgroup pairs

The aim of the present paper is to generalize the notion of the group determinants for finite groups. For a finite group $G$ of order $kn$ and its subgroup $H$ of order $n$, one may define an $n$ by $kn$ matrix $X=(x_{hg^{-1}})_{h\in H,g\in G}$, where $x_g$ ($g\in G$) are indeterminates indexed by the elements in $G$. Then, we define an invariant $Θ(G,H)$ for a given pair $(G,H)$ by the $k$-wreath determinant of the matrix $X$, where $k$ is the index of $H$ in $G$. The $k$-wreath determinant of $n$ by $kn$ matrix is a relative invariant of the left action by the general linear group of order $k$ and right action by the wreath product of two symmetric groups of order $k$ and $n$. Since the definition of $Θ(G,H)$ is ordering-sensitive, representation theory of symmetric groups are naturally involved. In this paper, we treat abelian groups with a special choice of indeterminates and give various examples of non-abelian group-subgroup pairs.
Hankel Determinant Calculus for the Thue-Morse and related sequences

The Hankel determinants of certain automatic sequences $f$ are evaluated, based on a calculation modulo a prime number. In most cases, the Hankel determinants of automatic sequences do not have any closed-form expressions; the traditional methods, such as $LU$-decompo\-si\-tion and Jacobi continued fraction, cannot be applied directly. Our method is based on a simple idea: the Hankel determinants of each sequence $g$ equal to $f$ modulo $p$ are equal to the Hankel determinants of $f$ modulo $p$. The clue then consists of finding a nice sequence $g$, whose Hankel determinants have closed-form expressions.
Several examples are presented, including a result saying that the Hankel determinants of the Thue-Morse sequence are nonzero, first proved by Allouche, Peyrière, Wen and Wen using determinant manipulation. The present approach shortens the proof of the latter result significantly. We also prove that the corresponding Hankel determinants do not vanish when the powers $2^n$ in the infinite product defining the $\pm 1$ Thue--Morse sequence are replaced by $3^n$.

In 1998, Allouche, Peyrière, Wen and Wen established that the Hankel determinants associated with the Thue--Morse sequence on $\{-1, 1\}$ are always nonzero. Their proof depends on a set of sixteen recurrence relations. We present an alternative, purely combinatorial proof of the same result. We also re-prove a recent result of Coons on the non-vanishing of the Hankel determinants associated to two other classical integer sequences.
On $t$-extensions of the Hankel determinants of certain automatic sequences

In 1998, Allouche, Peyrière, Wen and Wen considered the Thue--Morse sequence, and proved that all the Hankel determinants of the period-doubling sequence are odd integral numbers. We speak of $t$-extension when the entries along the diagonal in the Hankel determinant are all multiplied by~$t$. Then we prove that the $t$-extension of each Hankel determinant of the period-doubling sequence is a polynomial in $t$, whose leading coefficient is the {\it only one} to be an odd integral number. Our proof makes use of the combinatorial set-up developed by Bugeaud and Han, which appears to be very suitable for this study, as the parameter $t$ counts the number of fixed points of a permutation. Finally, we prove that all the $t$-extensions of the Hankel determinants of the regular paperfolding sequence are polynomials in $t$ of degree less than or equal to $3$.
Hankel continued fraction and its applications

The Hankel determinants of a given power series $f$ can be evaluated by using the Jacobi continued fraction expansion of $f$. However the existence of the Jacobi continued fraction needs that all Hankel determinants of $f$ are nonzero. We introduce {\it Hankel continued fraction}, whose existene and unicity are guaranteed without any condition for the power series $f$. The Hankel determinants can also be evaluated by using the Hankel continued fraction.
It is well known that the continued fraction expansion of a quadratic irrational number is ultimately periodic. We prove a similar result for power series. If a power series $f$ over a finite field satisfies a quadratic functional equation, then the Hankel continued fraction is ultimately periodic. As an application, we derive the Hankel determinants of several automatic sequences, in particular, the regular paperfolding sequence. Thus we provide an automatic proof of a result obtained by Guo, Wu and Wen, which was conjectured by Coons-Vrbik.
Dimers and Dominoes
Using Kasteleyn's determinant method, we count perfect matchings of rectangular subgraphs of the square grid.
Averages of alpha-determinants over permutations
We show that certain weighted average of the alpha-determinant of a $kn$ by $kn$ matrix of the form $A\otimes1_{1,k}$, the Kronecker product of a $kn$ by $n$ matrix $A$ and $1$ by $k$ all one matrix $1_{1,k}$, over permutations of $kn$ letters is reduced to the $k$-wreath determinant of $A$ up to constant. The constant is exactly given by the modified content polynomial for the Young diagram $(k^n)$. As a corollary, we give a `determinantal' formula for certain functions on the symmetric groups which are invariant under the left and right translation by a Young subgroup, especially the values of the Kostka numbers for rectangular shapes with arbitrary weight. This corollary gives a generalization of the formula of irreducible characters of the symmetric group for rectangular shapes due to Stanley.
Lower bounds on maximal determinants of binary matrices via the probabilistic method
Let $D(n)$ be the maximal determinant for $n \times n$ $\{\pm 1\}$-matrices, and ${\mathcal R}(n) = D(n)/n^{n/2}$ be the ratio of $D(n)$ to the Hadamard upper bound. We give several new lower bounds on ${\mathcal R}(n)$ in terms of $d$, where $n = h+d$, $h$ is the order of a Hadamard matrix, and $h$ is maximal subject to $h \le n$. A relatively simple bound is \[{\mathcal R}(n) \ge \left(\frac{2}{πe}\right)^{d/2}
\left(1 - d^2\left(\fracπ{2h}\right)^{1/2}\right)
\;\text{ for all }\; n \ge 1.\] An asymptotically sharper bound is \[{\mathcal R}(n) \ge \left(\frac{2}{πe}\right)^{d/2}
\exp\left(d\left(\fracπ{2h}\right)^{1/2} +
\; O\left(\frac{d^{5/3}}{h^{2/3}}\right)\right).\] We also show that \[{\mathcal R}(n) \ge \left(\frac{2}{πe}\right)^{d/2}\] if $n \ge n_0$ and $n_0$ is sufficiently large, the threshold $n_0$ being independent of $d$, or for all $n\ge 1$ if $0 \le d \le 3$ (which would follow from the Hadamard conjecture). The proofs depend on the probabilistic method, and generalise previous results that were restricted to the cases $d=0$ and $d=1$.

The theory of Ihara zeta functions is extended to infinite graphs which are weighted and of finite total weight. In this case one gets meromorphic instead of rational functions and the classical determinant formulas of Bass and Ihara hold true with Fredholm determinants.

By the Chinese remainder theorem, the canonical map \[Ψ_n: R[X]/(X^n-1)\to \oplus_{d|n} R[X]/Φ_d(X)\] is an isomorphism when $R$ is a field whose characteristic does not divide $n$ and $Φ_d$ is the $d$th cyclotomic polynomial. When $R$ is the ring $\mathbf{Z}$ of rational integers, this map is injective but not surjective. In this paper, we give an explicit formula for the elementary divisors of the cokernel of $Ψ_n$(when $R=\mathbb{Z}$) using the prime factorisation of $n$. We also give a pictorial algorithm using Young Tableaux that takes $O(n^{3+ε})$ bit operations for any $ε> 0$ to determine a basis of Smith vectors (see Definition 3.1) for the codomain of $Ψ_n$. In general when $R$ is an integral domain, we prove that the determinant of $Ψ: R[X]/(\prod_j f_j) \to \bigoplus_j R[X]/(f_j)$ written with respect to the standard basis is $\prod_{1 \leqslant i < j
\leqslant n} \mathcal{R}(f_j, f_i)$, where $f_i$'s are pairwise relatively prime monic polynomials and $\mathcal{R}(f_j, f_i)$ is the resultant of $f_j$ and $f_i$.
Bounds on determinants of perturbed diagonal matrices

We give upper and lower bounds on the determinant of a perturbation of the identity matrix or, more generally, a perturbation of a nonsingular diagonal matrix. The matrices considered are, in general, diagonally dominant. The lower bounds are best possible, and in several cases they are stronger than well-known bounds due to Ostrowski and other authors. If $A = I-E$ is an $n \times n$ matrix and the elements of $E$ are bounded in absolute value by $\varepsilon \le 1/n$, then a lower bound of Ostrowski (1938) is $\det(A) \ge 1-n\varepsilon$. We show that if, in addition, the diagonal elements of $E$ are zero, then a best-possible lower bound is \[\det(A) \ge (1-(n-1)\varepsilon)\,(1+\varepsilon)^{n-1}.\] Corresponding upper bounds are respectively \[\det(A) \le (1 + 2\varepsilon + n\varepsilon^2)^{n/2}\] and \[\det(A) \le (1 + (n-1)\varepsilon^2)^{n/2}.\] The first upper bound is stronger than Ostrowski's bound (for $\varepsilon < 1/n$) $\det(A) \le (1 - n\varepsilon)^{-1}$. The second upper bound generalises Hadamard's inequality, which is the case $\varepsilon = 1$.
A necessary and sufficient condition for our upper bounds to be best possible for matrices of order $n$ and all positive $\varepsilon$ is the existence of a skew-Hadamard matrix of order $n$.
Correlation Functions of XX0 Heisenberg Chain, q-Binomial Determinants, and Random Walks

The XX0 Heisenberg model on a cyclic chain is considered. The representation of the Bethe wave functions via the Schur functions allows to apply the well-developed theory of the symmetric functions to the calculation of the thermal correlation functions. The determinantal expressions of the form-factors and of the thermal correlation functions are obtained. The q-binomial determinants enable the connection of the form-factors with the generating functions both of boxed plane partitions and of self-avoiding lattice paths. The asymptotical behavior of the thermal correlation functions is studied in the limit of low temperature provided that the characteristic parameters of the system are large enough.

Tree-width and Logspace: Determinants and Counting Euler Tours
Motivated by the recent result of [EJT10] showing that MSO properties are Logspace computable on graphs of bounded tree-width, we consider the complexity of computing the determinant of the adjacency matrix of a bounded tree-width graph and prove that it is L-complete. It is important to notice that the determinant is neither an MSO-property nor counts the number of solutions of an MSO-predicate. We extend this technique to count the number of spanning arborescences and directed Euler tours in bounded tree-width digraphs, and further to counting the number of spanning trees and the number of Euler tours in undirected graphs, all in L. Notice that undirected Euler tours are not known to be MSO-expressible and the corresponding counting problem is in fact #P-hard for general graphs. Counting undirected Euler tours in bounded tree-width graphs was not known to be polynomial time computable till very recently Chebolu et al [CCM13] gave a polynomial time algorithm for this problem (concurrently and independently of this work). Finally, we also show some linear algebraic extensions of the determinant algorithm to show how to compute the charcteristic polynomial and trace of the powers of a bounded tree-width graph in L.
Computing the Tutte Polynomial of Lattice Path Matroids Using Determinantal Circuits

We give a quantum-inspired $O(n^4)$ algorithm computing the Tutte polynomial of a lattice path matroid, where $n$ is the size of the ground set of the matroid. Furthermore, this can be improved to $O(n^2)$ arithmetic operations if we evaluate the Tutte polynomial on a given input, fixing the values of the variables. The best existing algorithm, found in 2004, was $O(n^5)$, and the problem has only been known to be polynomial time since 2003. Conceptually, our algorithm embeds the computation in a determinant using a recently demonstrated equivalence of categories useful for counting problems such as those that appear in simulating quantum systems.
A determinant representation for generalized ballot and Fuss-Catalan numbers
In this note we introduce a determinant and then give its evaluating formula. The determinant turns out to be a generalization of the well-known ballot and Fuss-Catalan numbers, which is believed to be new. The evaluating formula is proved by showing that the determinant coincides with the number of lattice paths with (1,0), (0,1)-steps in the plane that stay below a boundary line of rational slope.
