Determinants, their applications to Markov processes, and a random walk proof of Kirchhoff's matrix tree theorem
Kirchhoff's matrix tree theorem is a well-known result that gives a formula for the number of spanning trees in a finite, connected graph in terms of the graph Laplacian matrix. A closely related result is Wilson's algorithm for putting the uniform distribution on the set of spanning trees. We will show that when one follows Greg Lawler's strategy for proving Wilson's algorithm, Kirchhoff's theorem follows almost immediately after one applies some elementary linear algebra. We also show that the same ideas can be applied to other computations related to general Markov chains and processes on a finite state space.

Asymptotics for the number of spanning trees in circulant graphs and degenerating d-dimensional discrete tori
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 19.3 (2015): 513-543 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we obtain precise asymptotics for certain families of graphs, namely circulant graphs and degenerating discrete tori. The asymptotics contain interesting constants from number theory among which some can be interpreted as corresponding values for continuous limiting objects. We answer one question formulated in a paper from Atajan, Yong and Inaba in [1] and formulate a conjecture in relation to the paper from Zhang, Yong and Golin [21]. A crucial ingredient in the proof is to use the matrix tree theorem and express the combinatorial laplacian determinant in terms of Bessel functions. A non-standard Poisson summation formula and limiting properties of theta functions are then used to evaluate the asymptotics.
Observables of Macdonald processes
Published in Transactions of American Mathematical Society. 368 (2016), 1517-1558 • View PublicationBIB
We present a framework for computing averages of various observables of Macdonald processes. This leads to new contour--integral formulas for averages of a large class of multilevel observables, as well as Fredholm determinants for averages of two different single level observables.

Minors of a Class of Riordan Arrays Related to Weighted Partial Motzkin Paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
A partial Motzkin path is a path from $(0, 0)$ to $(n, k)$ in the $XOY$-plane that does not go below the $X$-axis and consists of up steps $U=(1, 1)$, down steps $D=(1, -1)$ and horizontal steps $H=(1, 0)$. A weighted partial Motzkin path is a partial Motzkin path with the weight assignment that all up steps and down steps are weighted by 1, the horizontal steps are endowed with a weight $x$ if they are lying on $X$-axis, and endowed with a weight $y$ if they are not lying on $X$-axis. Denote by $M_{n,k}(x, y)$ to be the weight function of all weighted partial Motzkin paths from $(0, 0)$ to $(n, k)$, and $\mathcal{M}=(M_{n,k}(x,y))_{n\geq k\geq 0}$ to be the infinite lower triangular matrices. In this paper, we consider the sums of minors of second order of the matrix $\mathcal{M}$, and obtain a lot of interesting determinant identities related to $\mathcal{M}$, which are proved by bijections using weighted partial Motzkin paths. When the weight parameters $(x, y)$ are specialized, several new identities are obtained related to some classical sequences involving Catalan numbers. Besides, in the alternating cases we also give some new explicit formulas for Catalan numbers.

Four transformations on the Catalan triangle
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we define four transformations on the classical Catalan triangle $\mathcal{C}=(C_{n,k})_{n\geq k\geq 0}$ with $C_{n,k}=\frac{k+1}{n+1}\binom{2n-k}{n}$. The first three ones are based on the determinant and the forth is utilizing the permanent of a square matrix. It not only produces many known and new identities involving Catalan numbers, but also provides a new viewpoint on combinatorial triangles.
Generalized frieze pattern determinants and higher angulations of polygons
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, vol. 123 (2014), pp. 30-42 • View PublicationBIB
Frieze patterns (in the sense of Conway and Coxeter) are in close connection to triangulations of polygons. Broline, Crowe and Isaacs have assigned a symmetric matrix to each polygon triangulation and computed the determinant. In this paper we consider d-angulations of polygons and generalize the combinatorial algorithm for computing the entries in the associated symmetric matrices; we compute their determinants and the Smith normal forms. It turns out that both are independent of the particular d-angulation, the determinant is a power of d-1, and the elementary divisors only take values d-1 and 1. We also show that in the generalized frieze patterns obtained in our setting every adjacent 2x2-determinant is 0 or 1, and we give a combinatorial criterion for when they are 1, which in the case d=3 gives back the Conway-Coxeter condition on frieze patterns.

Central differences, Euler numbers and symbolic methods
I relate some coefficients encountered when computing the functional determinants on spheres to the central differentials of nothing. In doing this I use some historic works, in particular transcribing the elegant symbolic formalism of Jeffery (1861) into central difference form which has computational advantages for Euler numbers, as discovered by Shovelton (1915). I derive sum rules for these, and for the central differentials, the proof of which involves an interesting expression for powers of sech x as multiple derivatives. I present a more general, symbolic treatment of central difference calculus which allows known, and unknown, things to be obtained in an elegant and compact fashion gaining, at no cost, the expansion of the powers of the inverse sinh, a basic central function. Systematic use is made of the operator 2 asinh(D/2). Umbral calculus is employed to compress the operator formalism. For example the orthogonality/completeness of the factorial numbers, of the first and second kinds, translates, umbrally, to T(t(x))=x. The classic expansions of multiple angle cosh and sinh in terms of powers of sinh are thence obtained with minimal effort.

Lambda Determinants
In this paper we prove a homogenous generalization of the lambda determinant formula of Mills, Robbins and Rumsey. In our formula the parameters depends on two indices. Our result also extends a recent formula of Di Francesco.

Some algebraic identities for the alpha-permanent
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the permanent of a matrix is a linear combination of determinants of block diagonal matrices which are simple functions of the original matrix. To prove this, we first show a more general identity involving α-permanents: for arbitrary complex numbers αand β, we show that the α-permanent of any matrix can be expressed as a linear combination of β-permanents of related matrices. Some other identities for the α-permanent of sums and products of matrices are shown, as well as a relationship between the α-permanent and general immanants. We conclude with a discussion of the computational complexity of the α-permanent and provide some numerical illustrations.

Seminormal forms and cyclotomic quiver Hecke algebras of type $A$
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper shows that the cyclotomic quiver Hecke algebras of type $A$, and the gradings on these algebras, are intimately related to the classical seminormal forms. We start by classifying all seminormal bases and then give an explicit "integral" closed formula for the Gram determinants of the Specht modules in terms of the combinatorics which utilizes the KLR gradings. We then use seminormal forms to give a deformation of the KLR algebras of type $A$. This makes it possible to study the cyclotomic quiver Hecke algebras in terms of the semisimple representation theory and seminormal forms. As an application we construct a new distinguished graded cellular basis of the cyclotomic KLR algebras of type $A$.

Heat kernels on regular graphs and generalized Ihara zeta function formulas
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish a new formula for the heat kernel on regular trees in terms of classical I-Bessel functions. Although the formula is explicit, and a proof is given through direct computation, we also provide a conceptual viewpoint using the horocyclic transform on regular trees. From periodization, we then obtain a heat kernel expression on any regular graph. From spectral theory, one has another expression for the heat kernel as an integral transform of the spectral measure. By equating these two formulas and taking a certain integral transform, we obtain several generalized versions of the determinant formula for the Ihara zeta function associated to finite or infinite regular graphs. Our approach to the Ihara zeta function and determinant formula through heat kernel analysis follows a similar methodology which exists for quotients of rank one symmetric spaces.
Dually weighted Stirling-type sequences
Published in European J. Combin. 43 (2015) 55-67 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a generalization of the Stirling numbers via symmetric functions involving two weight functions. The resulting extension unifies previously known Stirling-type sequences with known symmetric function forms, as well as other sequences such as the $p,q$-binomial coefficients. Recurrence relations, generating functions, orthogonality relations, convolution formulas, and determinants of certain matrices involving the obtained sequences are derived. We also give combinatorial interpretations of certain cases in terms of colored partitions and permutations.

Some Determinantal Identities
Some applications of a result, which is proved recently, is considered. We first prove three determinantal identities concerning the binomial coefficient and Stirling numbers of the first and the second kind. We also easily obtain the inverse of the Vandermonde matrix. Then we derive a recurrence formula for sums of powers, which is similar to the well-known Newton identity. In the last section, we consider some sequences given by a homologous linear recurrence equation. A determinantal identity for the Fibonacci numbers of higher order is proved. We finish with an expression of the generalized Vandermonde determinant in terms of the standard Vandermonde determinant and elementary symmetric polynomials.

Generalized Counting Constraint Satisfaction Problems With Determinantal Circuits
Published • View PublicationBIB
Generalized counting constraint satisfaction problems include Holant problems with planarity restrictions; polynomial-time algorithms for such problems include matchgates and matchcircuits, which are based on Pfaffians. In particular, they use gates which are expressible in terms of a vector of sub-Pfaffians of a skew-symmetric matrix. We introduce a new type of circuit based instead on determinants, with seemingly different expressive power. In these determinantal circuits, a gate is represented by the vector of all minors of an arbitrary matrix. Determinantal circuits permit a different class of gates. Applications of these circuits include proofs of theorems from algebraic graph theory including the Chung-Langlands formula for the number of rooted spanning forests of a graph and computing Tutte Polynomials of certain matroids. They also give a strategy for simulating quantum circuits with closed timelike curves. Monoidal category theory provides a useful language for discussing such counting problems, turning combinatorial restrictions into categorical properties. We introduce the counting problem in monoidal categories and count-preserving functors as a way to study FP subclasses of problems in settings which are generally #P-hard. Using this machinery we show that, surprisingly, determinantal circuits can be simulated by Pfaffian circuits at quadratic cost.

Binary Linear Codes, Dimers and Hypermatrices

We show that the weight enumerator of any binary linear code is equal to the permanent of a 3-dimensional hypermatrix (3-matrix). We also show that each permanent is a determinant of a 3-matrix. As an application we write the dimer partition function of a finite 3-dimensional cubic lattice as the determinant of the vertex-adjacency 3-matrix of a 2-dimensional simplicial complex which preserves the natural embedding of the cubic lattice.

SL_2-tilings and triangulations of the strip
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 120 (2013), 1817-1834 • View PublicationBIB
SL_2-tilings were introduced by Assem, Reutenauer, and Smith in connection with frieses and their applications to cluster algebras. An SL_2-tiling is a bi-infinite matrix of positive integers such that each adjacent 2 x 2-submatrix has determinant 1. We construct a large class of new SL_2-tilings which contains the previously known ones. More precisely, we show that there is a bijection between our class of SL_2-tilings and certain combinatorial objects, namely triangulations of the strip.

Matrices, Characters and Descents

A new family of asymmetric matrices of Walsh-Hadamard type is introduced. We study their properties and, in particular, compute their determinants and discuss their eigenvalues. The invertibility of these matrices implies that certain character formulas are invertible, yielding expressions for the cardinalities of sets of combinatorial objects with prescribed descent sets in terms of character values of the symmetric group.

Determinants of grids, tori, cylinders and Möbius ladders
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Bieñ [A. Bieñ, The problem of singularity for planar grids, Discrete Math. 311 (2011), 921--931] obtained a recursive formula for the determinant of a grid. Also, recently, Pragel [D. Pragel, Determinants of box products of paths, Discrete Math. 312 (2012), 1844--1847], independently, obtained an explicit formula for this determinant. In this paper, we give a short proof for this problem. Furthermore, applying the same technique, we get explicit formulas for the determinant of a torus, a cylinder, and a Möbius ladder.
