Splitting criterion for reflexive sheaves
Published • View Publication • BIB
The purpose of this paper is to study the structure of reflexive sheaves over projective spaces through hyperplane sections. We give a criterion for a reflexive sheaf to split into a direct sum of line bundles. An application to the theory of free hyperplane arrangements is also given.

Lattice Path Matroids: Structural Properties
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 2006 • View Publication • BIB
This paper studies structural aspects of lattice path matroids, a class of transversal matroids that is closed under taking minors and duals. Among the basic topics treated are direct sums, duals, minors, circuits, and connected flats. One of the main results is a characterization of lattice path matroids in terms of fundamental flats, which are special connected flats from which one can recover the paths that define the matroid. We examine some aspects related to key topics in the literature of transversal matroids and we determine the connectivity of lattice path matroids. We also introduce notch matroids, a minor-closed, dual-closed subclass of lattice path matroids, and we find their excluded minors.

Cyclotomic and simplicial matroids
Published in Israel J. Math. 150 (2005), 229-240 • View Publication • BIB
Two naturally occurring matroids representable over Q are shown to be dual: the {\it cyclotomic matroid} $μ_n$ represented by the $n^{th}$ roots of unity $1,ζ,ζ^2,...,ζ^{n-1}$ inside the cyclotomic extension $Q(ζ)$, and a direct sum of copies of a certain simplicial matroid, considered originally by Bolker in the context of transportation polytopes. A result of Adin leads to an upper bound for the number of $Q$-bases for $Q(ζ)$ among the $n^{th}$ roots of unity, which is tight if and only if $n$ has at most two odd prime factors. In addition, we study the Tutte polynomial of $μ_n$ in the case that $n$ has two prime factors.

Pattern avoidance classes and subpermutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Pattern avoidance classes of permutations that cannot be expressed as unions of proper subclasses can be described as the set of subpermutations of a single bijection. In the case that this bijection is a permutation of the natural numbers a structure theorem is given. The structure theorem shows that the class is almost closed under direct sums or has a rational generating function.

On the structure of the adjacency matrix of the line digraph of a regular digraph
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, Volume 154, Issue 12, 15 July 2006, Pages 1763-1765 • View Publication • BIB
We show that the adjacency matrix M of the line digraph of a d-regular digraph D on n vertices can be written as M=AB, where the matrix A is the Kronecker product of the all-ones matrix of dimension d with the identity matrix of dimension n and the matrix B is the direct sum of the adjacency matrices of the factors in a dicycle factorization of D.

The displacement and split decompositions for a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Γ$ denote a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph with diameter at least three and standard module $V$. We introduce two direct sum decompositions of $V$. We call these the displacement decomposition for $Γ$ and the split decomposition for $Γ$. We describe how these decompositions are related.

The peak algebra and the descent algebras of types B and D
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 356 (2004), no. 7, 2781--2824 • View Publication • BIB
We show the existence of a unital subalgebra of the symmetric group algebra linearly spanned by sums of permutations with a common peak set, which we call the peak algebra. We show that this algebra is the image of the descent algebra of type B under the map to the descent algebra of type A which forgets the signs, and also the image of the descent algebra of type D. The peak algebra contains a two sided ideal which is defined in terms of interior peaks. This object was introduced in previous work by Nyman; we find that it is the image of certain ideals of the descent algebras of types B and D introduced in previous work of N. Bergeron et al. We derive an exact sequence involving the peak ideal and the peak algebras of degrees $n$ and $n-2$. We obtain this and many other properties of the peak algebra and its peak ideal by first establishing analogous results for signed permutations and then forgetting the signs. In particular, we construct two new commutative semisimple subalgebras of the descent algebra by grouping permutations according to their number of peaks or interior peaks. We discuss the Hopf algebraic structures that exist on the direct sums of these spaces over $n\geq 0$ and explain the connection with previous work of Stembridge; we also obtain new properties of his descents-to-peaks map and construct a type B analog.

Combinatorics of words and semigroup algebras which are sums of locally nilpotent subalgebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct new examples of non-nil algebras with any number of generators, which are direct sums of two locally nilpotent subalgebras. As all previously known examples, our examples are contracted semigroup algebras and the underlying semigroups are unions of locally nilpotent subsemigroups. In our constructions we make more transparent than in the past the close relationship between the considered problem and combinatorics of words.

The peak algebra of the symmetric group revisited
Published in Adv. in Math. 192 (2005), No. 2, 259-309 • View Publication • BIB
The linear span P_n of the sums of all permutations in the symmetric group S_n with a given set of peaks is a sub-algebra of the symmetric group algebra, due to Nyman. This peak algebra is a left ideal of the descent algebra D_n; and the direct sum P of all P_n is a Hopf sub-algebra of the direct sum D of all D_n, dual to the Stembridge algebra of peak functions. In our self-contained approach, peak counterparts of several results on the descent algebra are established, including a simple combinatorial characterization of the algebra P_n; an algebraic characterization of P_n based on the action on the Poincar'e-Birkhoff-Witt basis of the free associative algebra; the display of peak variants of the classical Lie idempotents; an Eulerian-type sub-algebra of P_n; a description of the Jacobson radical of P_n and its nil-potency index, of the principal indecomposable and irreducible P_n-modules, and of the Cartan matrix of P_n. Furthermore, it is shown that the primitive Lie algebra of P is free, and that P is its enveloping algebra.
Homogeneous multivariate polynomials with the half-plane property
Published in Adv. Appl. Math. 32, 88-187 (2004) • View Publication • BIB
A polynomial P in n complex variables is said to have the "half-plane property" (or Hurwitz property) if it is nonvanishing whenever all the variables lie in the open right half-plane. Such polynomials arise in combinatorics, reliability theory, electrical circuit theory and statistical mechanics. A particularly important case is when the polynomial is homogeneous and multiaffine: then it is the (weighted) generating polynomial of an r-uniform set system. We prove that the support (set of nonzero coefficients) of a homogeneous multiaffine polynomial with the half-plane property is necessarily the set of bases of a matroid. Conversely, we ask: For which matroids M does the basis generating polynomial P_{B(M)} have the half-plane property? Not all matroids have the half-plane property, but we find large classes that do: all sixth-root-of-unity matroids, and a subclass of transversal (or cotransversal) matroids that we call "nice". Furthermore, the class of matroids with the half-plane property is closed under minors, duality, direct sums, 2-sums, series and parallel connection, full-rank matroid union, and some special cases of principal truncation, principal extension, principal cotruncation and principal coextension. Our positive results depend on two distinct (and apparently unrelated) methods for constructing polynomials with the half-plane property: a determinant construction (exploiting "energy" arguments), and a permanent construction (exploiting the Heilmann-Lieb theorem on matching polynomials). We conclude with a list of open questions.

The kernel of the adjacency matrix of a rectangular mesh
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given an m x n rectangular mesh, its adjacency matrix A, having only integer entries, may be interpreted as a map between vector spaces over an arbitrary field K. We describe the kernel of A: it is a direct sum of two natural subspaces whose dimensions are equal to $\lceil c/2 \rceil$ and $\lfloor c/2 \rfloor$, where c = gcd (m+1,n+1) - 1. We show that there are bases to both vector spaces, with entries equal to 0, 1 and -1. When K = Z/(2), the kernel elements of these subspaces are described by rectangular tilings of a special kind. As a corollary, we count the number of tilings of a rectangle of integer sides with a specified set of tiles.

Cohen-Macaulay quotients of normal semigroup rings via irreducible resolutions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Every quotient R/I of a semigroup ring R by a radical monomial ideal I has a unique minimal injective-like resolution by direct sums of quotients of R modulo prime monomial ideals. The quotient R/I is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if every summand in cohomological degree $i$ has dimension exactly dim(R/I) - i. This Cohen-Macaulay characterization reduces to the Eagon-Reiner theorem by Alexander duality when R is a polynomial ring. The proof exploits a graded ring-theoretic generalization of the Zeeman spectral sequence, thereby also providing a combinatorial topological version for polyhedral cell complexes, involving no commutative algebra.

Tensor product varieties and crystals. ADE case
Let g be a simple simply laced Lie algebra. In this paper two families of varieties associated to the Dynkin graph of g are described: ``tensor product'' and ``multiplicity'' varieties. These varieties are closely related to Nakajima's quiver varieties and should play an important role in the geometric constructions of tensor products and intertwining operators. In particular it is shown that the set of irreducible components of a tensor product variety can be equipped with a structure of g-crystal isomorphic to the crystal of the canonical basis of the tensor product of several simple finite dimensional representations of g, and that the number of irreducible components of a multiplicity variety is equal to the multiplicity of a certain representation in the tensor product of several others. Moreover the decomposition of a tensor product into a direct sum is described geometrically (on the level of crystals).

Morita equivalences of Ariki-Koike algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that every Ariki-Koike algebra is Morita equivalent to a direct sum of tensor products of smaller Ariki-Koike algebras which have q-connected parameter sets. A similar result is proved for the cyclotomic q-Schur algebras. Combining our results with work of Ariki and Uglov, the decomposition numbers for the Ariki-Koike algebras defined over fields of characteristic zero are now known in principle.

It is proved that the limiting distribution of the length of the longest weakly increasing subsequence in an inhomogeneous random word is related to the distribution function for the eigenvalues of a certain direct sum of Gaussian unitary ensembles subject to an overall constraint that the eigenvalues lie in a hyperplane.
Lattice Diagram Polynomials and Extended Pieri Rules
Published in Adv. Math. 142 (1999), no. 2, 244--334 • View Publication • BIB
The lattice cell in the ${i+1}^{st}$ row and ${j+1}^{st}$ column of the positive quadrant of the plane is denoted $(i,j)$. If $μ$ is a partition of $n+1$, we denote by $μ/ij$ the diagram obtained by removing the cell $(i,j)$ from the (French) Ferrers diagram of $μ$. We set $Δ_{μ/ij}=\det \| x_i^{p_j}y_i^{q_j} \|_{i,j=1}^n$, where $(p_1,q_1),... ,(p_n,q_n)$ are the cells of $μ/ij$, and let ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ be the linear span of the partial derivatives of $Δ_{μ/ij}$. The bihomogeneity of $Δ_{μ/ij}$ and its alternating nature under the diagonal action of $S_n$ gives ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ the structure of a bigraded $S_n$-module. We conjecture that ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ is always a direct sum of $k$ left regular representations of $S_n$, where $k$ is the number of cells that are weakly north and east of $(i,j)$ in $μ$. We also make a number of conjectures describing the precise nature of the bivariate Frobenius characteristic of ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ in terms of the theory of Macdonald polynomials. On the validity of these conjectures, we derive a number of surprising identities. In particular, we obtain a representation theoretical interpretation of the coefficients appearing in some Macdonald Pieri Rules.

Orlik-Solomon algebras and Tutte polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $OS$ algebra $A$ of a matroid $M$ is a graded algebra related to the Whitney homology of the lattice of flats of $M$. In case $M$ is the underlying matroid of a hyperplane arrangement \A in $\C^r$, $A$ is isomorphic to the cohomology algebra of the complement $\C^r\setminus \bigcup \A.$ Few examples are known of pairs of arrangements with non-isomorphic matroids but isomorphic $OS$ algebras. In all known examples, the Tutte polynomials are identical, and the complements are homotopy equivalent but not homeomorphic. We construct, for any given simple matroid $M_0$, a pair of infinite families of matroids $M_n$ and $M'_n$, $n\geq 1$, each containing $M_0$ as a submatroid, in which corresponding pairs have isomorphic $OS$ algebras. If the seed matroid $ M_0$ is connected, then $M_n$ and $M'_n$ have different Tutte polynomials. As a consequence of the construction, we obtain, for any $m$, $m$ different matroids with isomorphic $OS$ algebras. Suppose one is given a pair of central complex hyperplane arrangements $\A_0$ and $\A_1$. Let $§$ denote the arrangement consisting of the hyperplane $\{0\}$ in $\C^1$. We define the parallel connection $P(\A_0,\A_1)$, an arrangement realizing the parallel connection of the underlying matroids, and show that the direct sums $\A_0 \oplus \A_1$ and $§\oplus P(\A_0,\A_1)$ have diffeomorphic complements.

Characteristic varieties of arrangements
Published in Mathematical Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society 127 (1999), no. 1, 33-53 • View Publication • BIB
The k-th Fitting ideal of the Alexander invariant B of an arrangement A of n complex hyperplanes defines a characteristic subvariety, V_k(A), of the complex algebraic n-torus. In the combinatorially determined case where B decomposes as a direct sum of local Alexander invariants, we obtain a complete description of V_k(A). For any arrangement A, we show that the tangent cone at the identity of this variety coincides with R^1_k(A), one of the cohomology support loci of the Orlik-Solomon algebra. Using work of Arapura and Libgober, we conclude that all positive-dimensional components of V_k(A) are combinatorially determined, and that R^1_k(A) is the union of a subspace arrangement in C^n, thereby resolving a conjecture of Falk. We use these results to study the reflection arrangements associated to monomial groups.
