Dehn-Sommerville from Gauss-Bonnet
We give a zero curvature proof of Dehn-Sommerville for finite simple graphs. It uses a parametrized Gauss-Bonnet formula telling that the curvature of the valuation G to f_G(t)=1+f0 t + ... + fd t^(d+1) defined by the f-vector of G is the anti-derivative F of f evaluated on the unit sphere S(x). Gauss Bonnet is then parametrized, f_G(t) = sum_x F_(S(x))(t), and holds for all simplicial complexes G. The Gauss-Bonnet formula chi(G)=sum_x K(x) for Euler characteristic chi(G) is the special case t=-1. Dehn-Sommerville is equivalent to the reflection symmetry f_G(t)+(-1)^d f_G(-1-t)=0 which is equivalent to the same symmetry for F. Gauss-Bonnet therefore relates Dehn-Sommerville for G with Dehn-Sommerville for the unit spheres S(x), where it is a zero curvature condition. A class X_d of complexes for which Dehn-Sommerville holds is defined inductively by requiring chi(G)=1+(-1)^d and S(x) in X_(d-1) for all x. It starts with X_(-1)={}. Examples are simplicial spheres, including homology spheres, any odd-dimensional discrete manifold, any even-dimensional discrete manifold with chi(G)=2. It also contains non-orientable ones for which Poincar'e-duality fails or stranger spaces like spaces where the unit spheres allow for two disjoint copies of manifolds with chi(G)=1. Dehn-Sommerville is present in the Barycentric limit. It is a symmetry for the Perron-Frobenius eigenvector of the Barycentric refinement operator A. The even eigenfunctions of A^T, the Barycentric Dehn-Sommerville functionals, vanish on X like 22 f1 - 33 f2 + 40 f3 - 45f4=0 for all 4-manifolds.
The average simplex cardinality of a finite abstract simplicial complex
We study the average simplex cardinality Dim^+(G) = sum_x |x|/(|G|+1) of a finite abstract simplicial complex G. The functional is a homomorphism from the monoid of simplicial complexes to the rationals: the formula Dim^+(G + H) = Dim^+(G) + Dim^+(H) holds for the join + similarly as for the augmented inductive dimension dim^+(G) = dim(G)+1 where dim is the inductive dimension dim(G) = 1+ sum_x dim(S(x))/|G| with unit sphere S(x) (a recent theorem of Betre and Salinger). In terms of the generating function f(t) = 1+v_0 t + v_1 t^2 + ... +v_d t^(d+1) defined by the f-vector (v_0,v_1, \dots) of G for which f(-1) is the genus 1-X(G) with Euler characteristic X and f(1)=|G|+1 is the augmented number of simplices, the average cardinality is the logarithmic derivative Dim^+(f) = f'(1)/f(1) of f at 1. Beside introducing the average cardinality and establishing its compatibility with arithmetic, we prove two results: 1) the inequality dim^+(G)/2 <= Dim^+(G) with equality for complete complexes. 2) the limit C_d of Dim^+(G_n) for n to infinity is the same for any initial complex G_0 of maximal dimension d and the constant c_d is explicitly given in terms of the Perron-Frobenius eigenfunction of the universal Barycentric refinement operator and is for positive d always a rational number in the open interval ((d+1)/2,d+1).
Semi-equivelar maps of Euler characteristics -2 with few vertices
We enumerate and classify all the semi equivelar maps on the surface of $ χ=-2 $ with up to 12 vertices. We also determine which of these are vertex-transitive and which are not.
The Möbius function of ${\rm PSL}(3,2^p)$ for any prime $p$
Let $G$ be the simple group ${\rm PSL}(3,2^p)$, where $p$ is a prime number. For any subgroup $H$ of $G$, we compute the Möbius function of $H$ in the subgroup lattice of $G$. To this aim, we describe the intersections of maximal subgroups of $G$. We point out some connections of the Möbius function with other combinatorial objects, and, in this context, we compute the reduced Euler characteristic of the order complex of the subposet of $r$-subgroups of ${\rm PGL}(3,q)$, for any prime $r$ and any prime power $q$.
Euler characteristics in the quantum $K$-theory of flag varieties
We prove that the sheaf Euler characteristic of the product of a Schubert class and an opposite Schubert class in the quantum $K$-theory ring of a (generalized) flag variety $G/P$ is equal to $q^d$, where $d$ is the smallest degree of a rational curve joining the two Schubert varieties. This implies that the sum of the structure constants of any product of Schubert classes is equal to 1. Along the way, we provide a description of the smallest degree $d$ in terms of its projections to flag varieties defined by maximal parabolic subgroups.
Generalisations of the Harer-Zagier recursion for 1-point functions
Harer and Zagier proved a recursion to enumerate gluings of a $2d$-gon that result in an orientable genus $g$ surface, in their work on Euler characteristics of moduli spaces of curves. Analogous results have been discovered for other enumerative problems, so it is natural to pose the following question: how large is the family of problems for which these so-called 1-point recursions exist?
In this paper, we prove the existence of 1-point recursions for a class of enumerative problems that have Schur function expansions. In particular, we recover the Harer-Zagier recursion, but our methodology also applies to the enumeration of dessins d'enfant, to Bousquet-Mélou-Schaeffer numbers, to monotone Hurwitz numbers, and more. On the other hand, we prove that there is no 1-point recursion that governs simple Hurwitz numbers. Our results are effective in the sense that one can explicitly compute particular instances of 1-point recursions, and we provide several examples. We conclude the paper with a brief discussion and a conjecture relating 1-point recursions to the theory of topological recursion.
Harer-Zagier generating functions, the Redfield-Polya cycle index and Cohen semilinear congruences
Harer-Zagier generating functions for Euler characteristics of moduli spaces of curves contain $n$-necklace polynomials. Taylor expansions for these polynomials depend on numbers of solutions of Cohen semilinear congruences.
A Categorification of the Vandermonde Determinant

In the spirit of Bar Natan's construction of Khovanov homology, we give a categorification of the Vandermonde determinant. Given a sequence of positive integers $\vec{x}=(x_1,...,x_n)$, we construct a commutative diagram in the shape of the Bruhat order on $S_n$ whose nodes are colored smoothings of the $2$-strand torus link $T_{2,n}$, and whose arrows are colored cobordisms. An application of a TQFT to this diagram yields a chain complex whose Euler characteristic is the Vandermonde determinant evaluated at $\vec{x}$. A generalization to arbitrary link diagrams is given, producing categorifications of certain generalized Vandermonde determinants. We also address functoriality of this construction.
A q-analogue and a symmetric function analogue of a result by Carlitz, Scoville and Vaughan
We derive an equation that is analogous to a well-known symmetric function identity: $\sum_{i=0}^n(-1)^ie_ih_{n-i}=0$. Here the elementary symmetric function $e_i$ is the Frobenius characteristic of the representation of $\mathcal{S}_i$ on the top homology of the subset lattice $B_i$, whereas our identity involves the representation of $\mathcal{S}_n\times \mathcal{S}_n$ on the Segre product of $B_n$ with itself. We then obtain a q-analogue of a polynomial identity given by Carlitz, Scoville and Vaughan through examining the Segre product of the subspace lattice $B_n(q)$ with itself. We recognize the connection between the Euler characteristic of the Segre product of $B_n(q)$ with itself and the representation on the Segre product of $B_n$ with itself by recovering our polynomial identity from specializing the identity on the representation of $\mathcal{S}_i\times \mathcal{S}_i$.

In this paper we define infinite-dimensional algebra and its representation, whose basis is naturally identified with semi-infinite configurations of the square ladder model. We also extrapolate the ideas for the cyclic 3-leg triangular ladder model. All of these propose a way for generalization, which leads to representations of N = 2, ... algebras.

A Cohomology Theory for Planar Trivalent Graphs with Perfect Matchings
We introduce a new cohomology theory for planar trivalent graphs with perfect matchings. The graded Euler characteristic of the cohomology is a one variable polynomial called the 2-factor polynomial that, if nonzero when evaluated at one, implies that the perfect matching is even and therefore the graph is 4-face colorable. We also define several new polynomials invariants of graphs with and without perfect matchings that are invariants of abstract tensors systems and spin networks defined by Roger Penrose in the 1970s. We show how some of these polynomials can be ``categorified'' into their own homology theories.

Let $G$ be the simple group ${\rm PSU}(2,2^{2^n})$, $n>0$. For any subgroup $H$ of $G$, we compute the Möbius function $μ_L(H,G)$ of $H$ in the subgroup lattice $L$ of $G$, and the Möbius function $μ_{\bar L}([H],[G])$ of $[H]$ in the poset $\bar L$ of conjugacy classes of subgroups of $G$. For any prime $p$, we provide the Euler characteristic of the order complex of the poset of $p$-subgroups of $G$.

Whitney's theorem states that every 3-connected planar graph is uniquely embeddable on the sphere. On the other hand, it has many inequivalent embeddings on another surface. We shall characterize structures of a $3$-connected $3$-regular planar graph $G$ embedded on the projective-plane, the torus and the Klein bottle, and give a one-to-one correspondence between inequivalent embeddings of $G$ on each surface and some subgraphs of the dual of $G$ embedded on the sphere. These results enable us to give explicit bounds for the number of inequivalent embeddings of $G$ on each surface, and propose effective algorithms for enumerating and counting these embeddings.
Ansatz for $(-1)^{n-1}\nabla p_n$
We construct a special family of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Hilbert scheme on $n$-points in the affine plane. The equivariant Euler characteristic of these sheaves are closely related to the symmetic functions $(-1)^{n-1} \nabla p_n$. We prove a higher cohomology vanishing result of these sheaves. It follows from the Bridgeland-King-Reid correspondence that there is an effective $S_n$ module underlying the aforementioned family of symmetric functions.

We introduce two new bases of the ring of polynomials and study their relations to known bases. The first basis is the quasiLascoux basis, which is simultaneously both a $K$-theoretic deformation of the quasikey basis and also a lift of the $K$-analogue of the quasiSchur basis from quasisymmetric polynomials to general polynomials. We give positive expansions of this quasiLascoux basis into the glide and Lascoux atom bases, as well as a positive expansion of the Lascoux basis into the quasiLascoux basis. As a special case, these expansions give the first proof that the $K$-analogues of quasiSchur polynomials expand positively in multifundamental quasisymmetric polynomials of T. Lam and P. Pylyavskyy.
The second new basis is the kaon basis, a $K$-theoretic deformation of the fundamental particle basis. We give positive expansions of the glide and Lascoux atom bases into this kaon basis.
Throughout, we explore how the relationships among these $K$-analogues mirror the relationships among their cohomological counterparts. We make several 'alternating sum' conjectures that are suggestive of Euler characteristic calculations.

A vertex-transitive map $X$ is a map on a surface on which the automorphism group of $X$ acts transitively on the set of vertices of $X$. If the face-cycles at all the vertices in a map are of same type then the map is called a semi-equivelar map. Clearly, a vertex-transitive map is semi-equivelar. Converse of this is not true in general. In particular, there are semi-equivelar maps on the torus, on the Klein bottle and on the surfaces of Euler characteristics $-1$ $\&$ $-2$ which are not vertex-transitive.
It is known that the boundaries of Platonic solids, Archimedean solids, regular prisms and antiprisms are vertex-transitive maps on $\mathbb{S}^2$. Here we show that there is exactly one semi-equivelar map on $\mathbb{S}^2$ which is not vertex-transitive. More precisely, we show that a semi-equivelar map on $\mathbb{S}^2$ is the boundary of a Platonic solid, an Archimedean solid, a regular prism, an antiprism or the pseudorhombicuboctahedron. As a consequence, we show that all the semi-equivelar maps on $\mathbb{RP}^2$ are vertex-transitive. Moreover, every semi-equivelar map on $\mathbb{S}^2$ can be geometrized, i.e., every semi-equivelar map on $\mathbb{S}^2$ is isomorphic to a semi-regular tiling of $\mathbb{S}^2$. In the course of the proof of our main result, we present a combinatorial characterization in terms of an inequality of all the types of semi-equivelar maps on $\mathbb{S}^2$. Here, we present self-contained combinatorial proofs of all our results.

We prove that graded $k$-Schur functions are $G$-equivariant Euler characteristics of vector bundles on the flag variety, settling a conjecture of Chen-Haiman. We expose a new miraculous shift invariance property of the graded $k$-Schur functions and resolve the Schur positivity and $k$-branching conjectures in the strongest possible terms by providing direct combinatorial formulas using strong marked tableaux.
The Cohomology for Wu Characteristics
While Euler characteristic X(G)=sum_x w(x) super counts simplices, Wu characteristics w_k(G) = sum_(x_1,x_2,...,x_k) w(x_1)...w(x_k) super counts simultaneously pairwise interacting k-tuples of simplices in a finite abstract simplicial complex G. More general is the k-intersection number w_k(G_1,...G_k), where x_i in G_i. We define interaction cohomology H^p(G_1,...,G_k) compatible with w_k and invariant under Barycentric subdivison. It allows to distinguish spaces which simplicial cohomology can not: it can identify algebraically the Moebius strip and the cylinder for example. The cohomology satisfies the Kuenneth formula: the Poincare polynomials p_k(t) are ring homomorphisms from the strong ring to the ring of polynomials in t. The Dirac operator D=d+d^* defines the block diagonal Hodge Laplacian L=D^2 which leads to the generalized Hodge correspondence b_p(G)=dim(H^p_k(G)) = dim(ker(L_p)) and Euler-Poincare w_k(G)=sum_p (-1)^p dim(H^p_k(G)) for Wu characteristic. Also, like for traditional simplicial cohomology, isospectral Lax deformation D' = [B(D),D], with B(t)=d(t)-d^*(t)-ib(t), D(t)=d(t)+d(t)^* + b(t) can deform the exterior derivative d. The Brouwer-Lefschetz fixed point theorem generalizes to all Wu characteristics: given an endomorphism T of G, the super trace of its induced map on k'th cohomology defines a Lefschetz number L_k(T). The Brouwer index i_T,k(x_1,...,x_k) = product_j=1^k w(x_j) sign(T|x_j) attached to simplex tuple which is invariant under T leads to the formula L_k(T) = sum_T(x)=x i_T,k(x). For T=Id, the Lefschetz number L_k(Id) is equal to the k'th Wu characteristic w_k(G) of the graph G and the Lefschetz formula reduces to the Euler-Poincare formula for Wu characteristic.
Equivariant Euler characteristics of the symplectic building

Every toroidal graph without triangles adjacent to $5$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable
DP-coloring, also known as correspondence coloring, is introduced by Dvo{ř}{á}k and Postle. It is a generalization of list coloring. In this paper, we show that every connected toroidal graph without triangles adjacent to $5$-cycles has minimum degree at most three unless it is a 2-connected $4$-regular graph with Euler characteristic $ε(G) = 0$. Consequently, every toroidal graph without triangles adjacent to $5$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable. In the final, we show that every planar graph without two certain subgraphs is DP-$4$-colorable. As immediate consequences, (i) every planar graph without $3$-cycles adjacent to $4$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable; (ii) every planar graph without $3$-cycles adjacent to $5$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable; (iii) every planar graph without $4$-cycles adjacent to $5$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable.
