Generalizing the star graphs of Müller-Stach and Westrich, we describe a class of graphs whose associated graph hypersurface is equipped with a non-trivial torus action. For such graphs, we show that the Euler characteristic of the corresponding projective graph hypersurface complement is zero. In contrast, we also show that the Euler characteristic in question can take any integer value for a suitable graph. This disproves a conjecture of Aluffi in a strong sense.

The momentum amplituhedron is a positive geometry encoding tree-level scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills directly in spinor-helicity space. In this paper we classify all boundaries of the momentum amplituhedron $\mathcal{M}_{n,k}$ and explain how these boundaries are related to the expected factorization channels, and soft and collinear limits of tree amplitudes. Conversely, all physical singularities of tree amplitudes are encoded in this boundary stratification. Finally, we find that the momentum amplituhedron $\mathcal{M}_{n,k}$ has Euler characteristic equal to one, which provides a first step towards proving that it is homeomorphic to a ball.
Semi-equivelar maps on the surface of Euler genus 3
If the cyclic sequence of faces for all the vertices in a map are of same type, then the map is said to be a semi-equivelar map. In this article, we classify all the types of semi-equivelar maps on the surface of Euler genus 3, $i.e.$, on the surface of Euler characteristic $-1$. That is, we present {a complete map types of} semi-equivelar maps (if exist) on the surface of Euler char. $-1$. We know the complete list of semi-equivelar maps (upto isomorphism) for some types. Here, we also present a complete list of semi-equivelar maps for one type and for other types, similar steps can be followed.
New upper bounds for the bondage number of a graph in terms of its maximum degree and Euler characteristic

The bondage number $b(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest number of edges whose removal from $G$ results in a graph with larger domination number. Let $G$ be embeddable on a surface whose Euler characteristic $χ$ is as large as possible, and assume $χ\leq0$. Gagarin-Zverovich and Huang have recently found upper bounds of $b(G)$ in terms of the maximum degree $Δ(G)$ and the Euler characteristic $χ(G)=χ$. In this paper we prove a better upper bound $b(G)\leqΔ(G)+\lfloor t\rfloor$ where $t$ is the largest real root of the cubic equation $z^3 + z^2 + (3χ- 8)z + 9χ- 12=0$; this upper bound is asymptotically equivalent to $b(G)\leqΔ(G)+1+\lfloor \sqrt{4-3χ} \rfloor$. We also establish further improved upper bounds for $b(G)$ when the girth, order, or size of the graph $G$ is large compared with its Euler characteristic $χ$.

Given a natural number k and an orientable surface S of finite type, define the k-curve graph to be the graph with vertices corresponding to isotopy classes of essential simple closed curves on S and with edges corresponding to pairs of such curves admitting representatives that intersect at most k times. We prove that the automorphism group of the k-curve graph of a surface S is isomorphic to the extended mapping class group for all k sufficiently small with respect to the Euler characteristic of S. We prove the same result for the so-called systolic complex, a variant of the curve graph whose complete subgraphs encode the intersection patterns for any collection of systoles with respect to a hyperbolic metric. This resolves a conjecture of Schmutz Schaller.

We give a combinatorial proof for a multivariable formula of the generating series of type D Young walls. Based on this we give a motivic refinement of a formula for the generating series of Euler characteristics of Hilbert schemes of points on the orbifold surface of type D.
Poincare Hopf for vector fields on graphs
We generalize the Poincare-Hopf theorem sum_v i(v) = X(G) to vector fields on a finite simple graph (V,E) with Whitney complex G. To do so, we define a directed simplicial complex as a finite abstract simplicial complex equipped with a bundle map F: G to V telling which vertex T(x) in x dominates the simplex x. The index i(v) of a vertex v is defined as X(F^-1(v)), where X is the Euler characteristic. We get a flow by adding a section map F: V to G. The resulting map T on G is a discrete model for a differential equation x'=F(x) on a compact manifold. Examples of directed complexes are defined by Whitney complexes defined by digraphs with no cyclic triangles or gradient fields on finite simple graphs defined by a locally injective function. The result extends to simplicial complexes equipped with an energy function H:G to Z that implements a divisor. The index sum is then the total energy.
Whittaker functions from motivic Chern classes

We prove a `motivic' analogue of the Weyl character formula, computing the Euler characteristic of a line bundle on a generalized flag manifold $G/B$ multiplied either by a motivic Chern class of a Schubert cell, or a Segre analogue of it. The result, given in terms of Demazure-Lusztig (D-L) operators, recovers formulas found by Brubaker, Bump and Licata for the Iwahori-Whittaker functions of the principal series representation of a $p$-adic group. In particular, we obtain a new proof of the classical Casselman-Shalika formula for the spherical Whittaker function. The proofs are based on localization in equivariant K theory, and require a geometric interpretation of how the Hecke dual (or inverse) of a D-L operator acts on the class of a point. We prove that the Hecke dual operators give Grothendieck-Serre dual classes of the motivic classes, a result which might be of independent interest. In an Appendix joint with Dave Anderson we show that if the line bundle is trivial, we recover a generalization of a classical formula by Kostant, Macdonald, Shapiro and Steinberg for the Poincar{é} polynomial of $G/B$; the generalization we consider is due to Akyıldız and Carrell and replaces $G/B$ by any smooth Schubert variety.
Homological Percolation and the Euler Characteristic

In this paper we study the connection between the phenomenon of homological percolation (the formation of "giant" cycles in persistent homology), and the zeros of the expected Euler characteristic curve. We perform an experimental study that covers four different models: site-percolation on the cubical and permutahedral lattices, the Poisson-Boolean model, and Gaussian random fields. All the models are generated on the flat torus $T^d$, for $d=2,3,4$. The simulation results strongly indicate that the zeros of the expected Euler characteristic curve approximate the critical values for homological-percolation. Our results also provide some insight about the approximation error. Further study of this connection could have powerful implications both in the study of percolation theory, and in the field of Topological Data Analysis.
Deletion-contraction triangles for Hausel-Proudfoot varieties

To a graph, Hausel and Proudfoot associate two complex manifolds, B and D, which behave, respectively like moduli of local systems on a Riemann surface, and moduli of Higgs bundles. For instance, B is a moduli space of microlocal sheaves, which generalize local systems, and D carries the structure of a complex integrable system. We show the Euler characteristics of these varieties count spanning subtrees of the graph, and the point-count over a finite field for B is a generating polynomial for spanning subgraphs. This polynomial satisfies a deletion-contraction relation, which we lift to a deletion-contraction exact triangle for the cohomology of B. There is a corresponding triangle for D. Finally, we prove B and D are diffeomorphic, that the diffeomorphism carries the weight filtration on the cohomology of B to the perverse Leray filtration on the cohomology of D, and that all these structures are compatible with the deletion-contraction triangles.

We say that a pure simplicial complex ${\mathbf K}$ of dimension $d$ satisfies the removal-collapsibility condition if ${\mathbf K}$ is either empty or ${\mathbf K}$ becomes collapsible after removing $\tilde β_d ({\mathbf K}; {\mathbb Z}_2)$ facets, where $\tilde β_d ({\mathbf K}; {\mathbb Z}_2)$ denotes the $d$th reduced Betti number.
In this paper, we show that if the link of each face of a pure simplicial complex ${\mathbf K}$ (including the link of the empty face which is the whole ${\mathbf K}$) satisfy the removal-collapsibility condition, then the second barycentric subdivision of ${\mathbf K}$ is vertex decomposable and in particular shellable. This is a higher dimensional generalization of a result of Hachimori, who proved that that if the link of each vertex of a pure 2-dimensional simplicial complex ${\mathbf K}$ is connected, and ${\mathbf K}$ becomes simplicially collapsible after removing $\tildeχ({\mathbf K})$ facets, where $\tilde χ({\mathbf K})$ denotes the reduced Euler characteristic, then the second barycentric subdivision of ${\mathbf K}$ is shellable.
For the proof, we introduce a new variant of decomposability of a simplicial complex, stronger than vertex decomposability, which we call star decomposability. This notion may be of independent interest.
Energized simplicial complexes
For a simplicial complex with n sets, let W^-(x) be the set of sets in G contained in x and W^+(x) the set of sets in G containing x. An integer-valued function h on G defines for every A subset G an energy E[A]=sum_x in A h(x). The function energizes the geometry similarly as divisors do in the continuum, where the Riemann-Roch quantity chi(G)+deg(D) plays the role of the energy. Define the n times n matrices L=L^--(x,y)=E[W^-(x) cap W^-(y)] and L^++(x,y) = E[W^+(x) cap W^+(y)]. With the notation S(x,y)=1_n omega(x) =delta(x,y) (-1)dim(x) and str(A)=tr(SA) define g=S L^++ S. The results are: det(L)=det(g) = prod_x in G h(x) and E[G] = sum_x,y g(x,y) and E[G]=str(g). The number of positive eigenvalues of g is equal to the number of positive energy values of h. In special cases, more is true: A) If h(x) in -1, 1}, the matrices L=L^--,L^++ are unimodular and L^-1 = g, even if G is a set of sets. B) In the constant energy h(x)=1 case, L and g are isospectral, positive definite matrices in SL(n,Z). For any set of sets G we get so isospectral multi-graphs defined by adjacency matrices L^++ or L^-- which have identical spectral or Ihara zeta function. The positive definiteness holds for positive divisors in general. C) In the topological case h(x)=omega(x), the energy E[G]=str(L) = str(g) = sum_x,y g(x,y)=chi(G) is the Euler characteristic of G and phi(G)=prod_x omega(x), a product identity which holds for arbitrary set of sets. D) For h(x)=t^|x| with some parameter t we have E[H]=1-f_H(t) with f_H(t)=1+f_0 t + cdots + f_d t^d+1 for the f-vector of H and L(x,y) = (1-f_W^-(x) cap W^-(y)(t)) and g(x,y)=omega(x) omega(y) (1-f_W^+(x) cap W^+(y)(t)). Now, the inverse of g is g^-1(x,y) = 1-f_W^-(x) cap W^-(y)(t)/t^dim(x cap y) and E[G] = 1-f_G(t)=sum_x,y g(x,y).
On the Boundaries of the m=2 Amplituhedron
Amplituhedra $\mathcal{A}_{n,k}^{(m)}$ are geometric objects of great interest in modern mathematics and physics: for mathematicians they are combinatorially rich generalizations of polygons and polytopes, based on the notion of positivity; for physicists, the amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}^{(4)}_{n,k}$ encodes the scattering amplitudes of the planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. In this paper we study the structure of boundaries for the amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n,k}^{(2)}$. We classify all boundaries of all dimensions and provide their graphical enumeration. We find that the boundary poset for the amplituhedron is Eulerian and show that the Euler characteristic of the amplituhedron equals one. This provides an initial step towards proving that the amplituhedron for $m=2$ is homeomorphic to a closed ball.
The counting matrix of a simplicial complex
For a finite abstract simplicial complex G with n sets, define the n x n matrix K(x,y) which is the number of subsimplices in the intersection of x and y. We call it the counting matrix of G. Similarly as the connection matrix L which is L(x,y)=1 if x and y intersect and 0 else, the counting matrix K is unimodular. Actually, K is always in SL(n,Z). The inverse of K has the Green function entries K^(-1)(x,y)=w(x) w(y) |W^+(x) intersected W^+y|, where W^+(x) is the star of x, the sets in G which contain x and w(x)=(-1)^dim(x). The matrix K is always positive definite. The spectra of K and K^(-1) always agree so that the matrix Q=K-K^(-1) has the spectral symmetry spec(Q)=-spec(Q) and the zeta function z(s) summing l(k)^(-s) with eigenvalues l(k) of K satisfies the functional equation z(a+ib)=z(-a+ib). The energy theorem in this case tells that the sum of the matrix elements of K^(-1)(x,y) is equal to the number sets in G. In comparison, we had in the connection matrix case the identity that the sum of the matrix elements of L^(-1) is the Euler characteristic of G.
The energy of a simplicial complex

A finite abstract simplicial complex G defines a matrix L, where L(x,y)=1 if two simplicies x,y in G intersect and where L(x,y)=0 if they don't. This matrix is always unimodular so that the inverse g of L has integer entries g(x,y). In analogy to Laplacians on Euclidean spaces, these Green function entries define a potential energy between two simplices x,y. We prove that the total energy summing all matrix elements g(x,y) is equal to the Euler characteristic X(G) of G and that the number of positive minus the number of negative eigenvalues of L is equal to X(G).
Theta functions and quiver Grassmannians
In this article, we use the relationship between cluster scattering diagrams and stability scattering diagrams to relate quiver representations with these diagrams. With a notion of positive crossing of a path $γ$, we show that if $γ$ has positive crossing in the scattering diagram, then it goes in the opposite direction of the Auslander-Reiten quiver of $Q$. We then give the Hall algebra theta functions which recover the cluster character formula by the Euler characteristic map. At last, we define the Hall algebra broken lines and then are able to give the stratification of the quiver Grassmannians by the bending of the broken lines.
A parametrized Poincare-Hopf Theorem and Clique Cardinalities of graphs
Given a locally injective real function g on the vertex set V of a finite simple graph G=(V,E), we prove the Poincare-Hopf formula f_G(t) = 1+t sum_{x in V} f_{S_g(x)}(t), where S_g(x) = { y in S(x), g(y) less than g(x) } and f_G(t)=1+f_0 t + ... + f_{d} t^{d+1} is the f-function encoding the f-vector of a graph G, where f_k counts the number of k-dimensional cliques, complete sub-graphs, in G. The corresponding computation of f reduces the problem recursively to n tasks of graphs of half the size. For t=-1, the parametric Poincare-Hopf formula reduces to the classical Poincare-Hopf result X(G)=sum_x i_g(x), with integer indices i_g(x)=1-X(S_g(x)) and Euler characteristic X. In the new Poincare-Hopf formula, the indices are integer polynomials and the curvatures K_x(t) expressed as index expectations K_x(t) = E[i_x(t)] are polynomials with rational coefficients. Integrating the Poincare-Hopf formula over probability spaces of functions g gives Gauss-Bonnet formulas like f_G(t) = 1+sum_{x} F_{S(x)}(t), where F_G is the anti-derivative of f_G. A similar computation is done for the generating function f_{G,H}(t,s) = sum_{k,l} f_{k,l}(G,H) s^k t^l of the f-intersection matrix f_{k,l}(G,H) counting the number of intersections of k-simplices in G with l-simplices in H. Also here, the computation is reduced to 4 n^2 computations for graphs of half the size: f_{G,H}(t,s) = sum_{v,w} f_{B_g(v),B_g(w)}(t,s) - f_{B_g(v),S_g(w)}(t,s) - f_{S_g(v),B_g(w)}(t,s) + f_{S_g(v),S_g(w)}(t,s), where B_g(v)= S_g(v)+{v} is the unit ball of v.

We compute the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the edge ideals of two families of circulant graphs, which includes all cubic circulant graphs. A feature of our approach is to combine bounds on the regularity, the projective dimension, and the reduced Euler characteristic to derive an exact value for the regularity.

Recent work of the first author, Negut and Rasmussen, and of Oblomkov and Rozansky in the context of Khovanov--Rozansky knot homology produces a family of polynomials in $q$ and $t$ labeled by integer sequences. These polynomials can be expressed as equivariant Euler characteristics of certain line bundles on flag Hilbert schemes. The $q,t$-Catalan numbers and their rational analogues are special cases of this construction. In this paper, we give a purely combinatorial treatment of these polynomials and show that in many cases they have nonnegative integer coefficients.
For sequences of length at most 4, we prove that these coefficients enumerate subdiagrams in a certain fixed Young diagram and give an explicit symmetric chain decomposition of the set of such diagrams. This strengthens results of Lee, Li and Loehr for $(4,n)$ rational $q,t$-Catalan numbers.

Veit Elser proposed a random graph model for percolation in which physical dimension appears as a parameter. Studying this model combinatorially leads naturally to the consideration of numerical graph invariants which we call \emph{Elser numbers} $\mathsf{els}_k(G)$, where $G$ is a connected graph and $k$ a nonnegative integer. Elser had proven that $\mathsf{els}_1(G)=0$ for all $G$. By interpreting the Elser numbers as Euler characteristics of appropriate simplicial complexes called \emph{nucleus complexes}, we prove that for all graphs $G$, they are nonpositive when $k=0$ and nonnegative for $k\geq2$. The last result confirms a conjecture of Elser. Furthermore, we give necessary and sufficient conditions, in terms of the 2-connected structure of~$G$, for the nonvanishing of the Elser numbers.
