It is shown that a refined version of a q-analogue of the Eulerian numbers together with the action, by conjugation, of the subgroup of the symmetric group $S_n$ generated by the $n$-cycle $(1,2,...,n)$ on the set of permutations of fixed cycle type and fixed number of excedances provides an instance of the cyclic sieving phenonmenon of Reiner, Stanton and White. The main tool is a class of symmetric functions recently introduced in work of two of the authors.

Duistermaat and van der Kallen show that there is no nontrivial complex Laurent polynomial all of whose powers have a zero constant term. Inspired by this, Sturmfels posed two questions: Do the constant terms of a generic Laurent polynomial form a regular sequence? If so, then what is the degree of the associated zero-dimensional ideal? In this note, we prove that the Eulerian numbers provide the answer to the second question. The proof involves reinterpreting the problem in terms of toric geometry.

A classical result of Euler states that the tangent numbers are an alternating sum of Eulerian numbers. A dual result of Roselle states that the secant numbers can be obtained by a signed enumeration of derangements. We show that both identities can be refined with the following statistics: the number of crossings in permutations and derangements, and the number of patterns 31-2 in alternating permutations.
Using previous results of Corteel, Rubey, Prellberg, and the author, we derive closed formulas for both q-tangent and q-secant numbers. There are two different methods to obtain these formulas: one with permutation tableaux and one with weighted Motzkin paths (Laguerre histories).
On powers of Stirling matrices
The powers of matrices with Stirling number-coefficients are investigated. It is revealed that the elements of these matrices have a number of properties of the ordinary Stirling numbers. Moreover, "higher order" Bell, Fubini and Eulerian numbers can be defined. Hence we give a new interpretation for E. T. Bell's iterated exponential integers. In addition, it is worth to note that these numbers appear in combinatorial physics, in the problem of the normal ordering of quantum field theoretical operators.

The combinatorial theory for the set of parity alternating permutations is expounded. In view of the numbers of ascents and inversions, several enumerative aspects of the set are investigated. In particular, it is shown that signed Eulerian numbers have intimate relationships to the set.

The notion of Rees product of posets was introduced by Björner and Welker, where they study connections between poset topology and commutative algebra. Björner and Welker conjectured and Jonsson proved that the dimension of the top homology of the Rees product of the truncated Boolean algebra $B_n \setminus \{0\}$ and the $n$-chain $C_n$ is equal to the number of derangements in the symmetric group $\mathfrak S_n$. Here we prove a refinement of this result, which involves the Eulerian numbers, and a $q$-analog of both the refinement and the original conjecture, which comes from replacing the Boolean algebra by the lattice of subspaces of the $n$-dimensional vector space over the $q$ element field, and involves the $(\maj,\exc)$-$q$-Eulerian polynomials studied in previous papers of the authors. Equivariant versions of the refinement and the original conjecture are also proved, as are type BC versions (in the sense of Coxeter groups) of the original conjecture and its $q$-analog.

We give a formula for generalized Eulerian numbers, prove monotonicity of sequences of certain ratios of the Eulerian numbers, and apply these results to obtain a new proof that the natural symmetric measure for the Bratteli-Vershik dynamical system based on the Euler graph is the unique fully supported invariant ergodic Borel probability measure. Key ingredients of the proof are a two-dimensional induction argument and a one-to-one correspondence between most paths from two vertices at the same level to another vertex.

In this paper, we explore the interrelationship between Eulerian numbers and B splines. Specifically, using B splines, we give the explicit formulas of the refined Eulerian numbers, and descents polynomials. Moreover, we prove that the coefficients of descent polynomials $D_d^n(t)$ are log-concave. This paper also provides a new approach to study Eulerian numbers and descent polynomials.

We derive an identity for certain linear combinations of polylogarithm functions with negative exponents, which implies relations for linear combinations of Eulerian numbers. The coefficients of our linear combinations are related to expanding moments of Satake parameters of holomorphic cuspidal newforms in terms of the moments of the corresponding Fourier coefficients, which has applications in analyzing lower order terms in the behavior of zeros of L-functions near the central point.
The signed Eulerian numbers on involutions
We define an analogue of signed Eulerian numbers $f_{n,k}$ for involutions of the symmetric group and derive some combinatorial properties of this sequence. In particular, we exhibit both an explicit formula and a recurrence for $f_{n,k}$ arising from the properties of its generating function.

In order to study signed Eulerian numbers, we introduce permutations of a particular type, called parity-alternate permutations, because they take even and odd entries alternately. The objective of this paper is twofold. The first is to derive several properties of those permutations, by subdividing them into even and odd ones. The second is to discuss relationships between those and signed Eulerian numbers. Divisibility properties by prime powers are also deduced for signed Eulerian numbers and several related numbers.

Let $f(x)$ and $g(x)$ be two real polynomials whose leading coefficients have the same sign. Suppose that $f(x)$ and $g(x)$ have only real zeros and that $g$ interlaces $f$ or $g$ alternates left of $f$. We show that if $ad\ge bc$ then the polynomial $$(bx+a)f(x)+(dx+c)g(x)$$ has only real zeros. Applications are related to certain results of F.Brenti (Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 413 (1989)) and transformations of Pólya frequency sequences. More specifically, suppose that $A(n,k)$ are nonnegative numbers which satisfy the recurrence $$A(n,k)=(rn+sk+t)A(n-1,k-1)+(an+bk+c)A(n-1,k)$$ for $n\ge 1$ and $0\le k\le n$, where $A(n,k)=0$ unless $0\le k\le n$. We show that if $rb\ge as$ and $(r+s+t)b\ge (a+c)s$, then for each $n\ge 0$, $A(n,0),A(n,1),...,A(n,n)$ is a Pólya frequency sequence. This gives a unified proof of the PF property of many well-known sequences including the binomial coefficients, the Stirling numbers of two kinds and the Eulerian numbers.

We study a group action on permutations due to Foata and Strehl and use it to prove that the descent generating polynomial of certain sets of permutations has a nonnegative expansion in the basis $\{t^i(1+t)^{n-1-2i}\}_{i=0}^m$, $m=\lfloor (n-1)/2 \rfloor$. This property implies symmetry and unimodality. We prove that the action is invariant under stack-sorting which strengthens recent unimodality results of Bóna. We prove that the generalized permutation patterns $(13-2)$ and $(2-31)$ are invariant under the action and use this to prove unimodality properties for a $q$-analog of the Eulerian numbers recently studied by Corteel, Postnikov, Steingrímsson and Williams.
We also extend the action to linear extensions of sign-graded posets to give a new proof of the unimodality of the $(P,ω)$-Eulerian polynomials of sign-graded posets and a combinatorial interpretations (in terms of Stembridge's peak polynomials) of the corresponding coefficients when expanded in the above basis.
Finally, we prove that the statistic defined as the number of vertices of even height in the unordered decreasing tree of a permutation has the same distribution as the number of descents on any set of permutations invariant under the action. When restricted to the set of stack-sortable permutations we recover a result of Kreweras.

The Eulerian triangle is a classical array of combinatorial numbers defined by a linear recursion. The associated boundary problem asks one to find all extreme nonnegative solutions to a dual recursion. Exploiting connections with random permutations and Markov chains we show that the boundary is discrete and explicitly identify its elements.
A New Approach to Signed Eulerian Numbers
The numbers of even and odd permutations with a given ascent number are investigated using an operator that was previously introduced by the author. Their difference is called a signed Eulerian number. By means of the operator the recurrence relation for signed Eulerian numbers is deduced, which was obtained by an analytic method. Our approach is straightforward and enables us to deduce other properties including divisibility by prime powers.
A Refinement of the Eulerian Numbers, and the Joint Distribution of $π(1)$ and Des($π$) in $S_n$
Given a permutation $π$ chosen uniformly from $S_n$, we explore the joint distribution of $π(1)$ and the number of descents in $π$. We obtain a formula for the number of permutations with $\des(π)=d$ and $π(1)=k$, and use it to show that if $\des(π)$ is fixed at $d$, then the expected value of $π(1)$ is $d+1$. We go on to derive generating functions for the joint distribution, show that it is unimodal if viewed correctly, and show that when $d$ is small the distribution of $π(1)$ among the permutations with $d$ descents is approximately geometric. Applications to Stein's method and the Neggers-Stanley problem are presented.
Permutation Tableaux and Permutation Patterns
In this paper we introduce and study a class of tableaux which we call permutation tableaux; these tableaux are naturally in bijection with permutations, and they are a distinguished subset of the Le-diagrams of Alex Postnikov. The structure of these tableaux is in some ways more transparent than the structure of permutations; therefore we believe that permutation tableaux will be useful in furthering the understanding of permutations. We give two bijections from permutation tableaux to permutations. The first bijection carries tableaux statistics to permutation statistics based on relative sizes of pairs of letters in a permutation and their places. We call these statistics weak excedance statistics, because of their close relation to weak excedances. The second bijection carries tableaux statistics (via the weak excedance statistics) to statistics based on generalized permutation patterns. We then give enumerative applications of these bijections. One nice consequence of these results is that the polynomial enumerating permutation tableaux according to their content generalizes both Carlitz' q-analog of the Eulerian numbers and the more recent q-analog of the Eulerian numbers of the second author. We conclude our paper with a list of open problems, some of which have now been solved by Burstein, Corteel, Eriksen, Reifegerste, and Viennot.

The volume and the number of lattice points of the permutohedron P_n are given by certain multivariate polynomials that have remarkable combinatorial properties. We give several different formulas for these polynomials. We also study a more general class of polytopes that includes the permutohedron, the associahedron, the cyclohedron, the Pitman-Stanley polytope, and various generalized associahedra related to wonderful compactifications of De Concini-Procesi. These polytopes are constructed as Minkowski sums of simplices. We calculate their volumes and describe their combinatorial structure. The coefficients of monomials in Vol P_n are certain positive integer numbers, which we call the mixed Eulerian numbers. These numbers are equal to the mixed volumes of hypersimplices. Various specializations of these numbers give the usual Eulerian numbers, the Catalan numbers, the numbers (n+1)^{n-1} of trees, the binomial coefficients, etc. We calculate the mixed Eulerian numbers using certain binary trees. Many results are extended to an arbitrary Weyl group.

We derive the continued fraction form of the generating function of some new $q$-analogs of the Eulerian numbers $\hat{E}_{k,n}(q)$ introduced by Lauren Williams building on work of Alexander Postnikov. They are related to the number of alignments and weak exceedances of permutations. We show how these numbers are related to crossing and generalized patterns of permutations We generalize to the case of decorated permutations. Finally we show how these numbers appear naturally in the stationary distribution of the ASEP model.
