Shannon capacity, Lovász theta number and the Mycielski construction
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the effect of the well-known Mycielski construction on the Shannon capacity of graphs and on one of its most prominent upper bounds, the (complementary) Lovász theta number. We prove that if the Shannon capacity of a graph, the distinguishability graph of a noisy channel, is attained by some finite power, then its Mycielskian has strictly larger Shannon capacity than the graph itself. For the complementary Lovász theta function we show that its value on the Mycielskian of a graph is completely determined by its value on the original graph, a phenomenon similar to the one discovered for the fractional chromatic number by Larsen, Propp and Ullman. We also consider the possibility of generalizing our results on the Sperner capacity of directed graphs and on the generalized Mycielsky construction. Possible connections with what Zuiddam calls the asymptotic spectrum of graphs are discussed as well.
The fractional chromatic number of the plane is at least 4
We prove that the fractional chromatic number $χ_f(\mathbb R^2)$ of the unit distance graph of the Euclidean plane is greater than or equal to $4$. Interestingly, however, we cannot present a finite subgraph $G$ of the plane such that $χ_f(G)\ge 4$. Instead, we utilize the concept of the geometric fractional chromatic number $χ_{gf}(G)$, which was introduced recently in connection with density bounds for 1-avoiding sets. First, as $G$ ranges over finite subgraphs of the plane, we establish that the supremum of $χ_f(G)$ is the same as that of $χ_{gf}(G)$. The proof exploits the amenability of the group of Euclidean transformations in dimension 2 and, as such, we do not know whether the analogous statement holds in higher dimensions. We then present a specific planar unit distance graph $G$ on 27 vertices such that $χ_{gf}(G)=4$, and conclude $χ_f(\mathbb R^2)\ge 4$ as a corollary. As another main result we show that the finitary fractional chromatic number and the Hall ratio of the plane are equal. As a consequence, we conclude that there exist finite unit distance graphs with independence ratio $\frac{1}{4}+\varepsilon$, while we conjecture that the value $\frac{1}{4}$ cannot be reached.

Critical subgraphs of Schrijver graphs for the fractional chromatic number
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schrijver graphs are vertex-color-critical subgraphs of Kneser graphs having the same chromatic number. They also share the value of their fractional chromatic number but Schrijver graphs are not critical for that. Here we present an induced subgraph of every Schrijver graph that is vertex-critical with respect to the fractional chromatic number. These subgraphs turn out to be isomorphic with certain circular complete graphs. We also characterize the critical edges within this subgraph.

New Eigenvalue Bound for the Fractional Chromatic Number
Published in J. Graph Theory 106 (2024) 167-181 • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph $G$, we let $s^+(G)$ denote the sum of the squares of the positive eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of $G$, and we similarly define $s^-(G)$. We prove that \[χ_f(G)\ge 1+\max\left\{\frac{s^+(G)}{s^-(G)},\frac{s^-(G)}{s^+(G)}\right\}\] and thus strengthen a result of Ando and Lin, who showed the same lower bound for the chromatic number $χ(G)$. We in fact show a stronger result wherein we give a bound using the eigenvalues of $G$ and $H$ whenever $G$ has a homomorphism to an edge-transitive graph $H$. Our proof utilizes ideas motivated by association schemes.

Generalizing Körner's graph entropy to graphons
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 114, December 2023, 103779 • View PublicationBIB
Körner introduced the notion of graph entropy in 1973 as the minimal code rate of a natural coding problem where not all pairs of letters can be distinguished in the alphabet. Later it turned out that it can be expressed as the solution of a minimization problem over the so-called vertex-packing polytope. In this paper we generalize this notion to graphons. We show that the analogous minimization problem provides an upper bound for graphon entropy. We also give a lower bound in the shape of a maximization problem. The main result of the paper is that for most graphons these two bounds actually coincide and hence precisely determine the entropy in question. Furthermore, graphon entropy has a nice connection to the fractional chromatic number and the fractional clique number.
Coloring circle arrangements: New $4$-chromatic planar graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Felsner, Hurtado, Noy and Streinu (2000) conjectured that arrangement graphs of simple great-circle arrangements have chromatic number at most $3$. Motivated by this conjecture, we study the colorability of arrangement graphs for different classes of arrangements of (pseudo-)circles. In this paper the conjecture is verified for $\triangle$-saturated pseudocircle arrangements, i.e., for arrangements where one color class of the 2-coloring of faces consists of triangles only, as well as for further classes of (pseudo-)circle arrangements. These results are complemented by a construction which maps $\triangle$-saturated arrangements with a pentagonal face to arrangements with 4-chromatic 4-regular arrangement graphs. This "corona" construction has similarities with the crowning construction introduced by Koester (1985). Based on exhaustive experiments with small arrangements we propose three strengthenings of the original conjecture. We also investigate fractional colorings. It is shown that the arrangement graph of every arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ of pairwise intersecting pseudocircles is "close" to being $3$-colorable. More precisely, the fractional chromatic number $χ_f(\mathcal{A})$ of the arrangement graph is bounded from above by $χ_f(\mathcal{A}) \le 3+O(\frac{1}{n})$, where $n$ is the number of pseudocircles of $\mathcal{A}$. Furthermore, we construct an infinite family of $4$-edge-critical $4$-regular planar graphs which are fractionally $3$-colorable. This disproves a conjecture of Gimbel, Kündgen, Li, and Thomassen (2019).

11/4-colorability of subcubic triangle-free graphs
Published in Zdeněk Dvořák, Bernard Lidický, and Luke Postle: 11/4-colorability of subcubic triangle-free graphs, Advances in Combinatorics 2025:5, 61pp • View PublicationBIB
We prove that up to two exceptions, every connected subcubic triangle-free graph has fractional chromatic number at most 11/4. This is tight unless further exceptional graphs are excluded, and improves the known bound on the fractional chromatic number of subcubic triangle-free planar graphs.

The fractional chromatic number of double cones over graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Assume $n, m$ are positive integers and $G$ is a graph. Let $P_{n,m}$ be the graph obtained from the path with vertices $\{-m, -(m-1), \ldots, 0, \ldots, n\}$ by adding a loop at vertex $ 0$. The double cone $Δ_{n,m}(G)$ over a graph $G$ is obtained from the direct product $G \times P_{n,m}$ by identifying $V(G) \times \{n\}$ into a single vertex $(\star, n)$, identifying $V(G) \times \{-m\}$ into a single vertex $(\star, -m)$, and adding an edge connecting $(\star, -m)$ and $(\star, n)$. This paper determines the fractional chromatic number of $Δ_{n,m}(G)$. In particular, if $n < m$ or $n=m$ is even, then $χ_f(Δ_{n,m}(G)) = χ_f(Δ_n(G))$, where $Δ_n(G)$ is the $n$th cone over $G$. If $n=m$ is odd, then $χ_f(Δ_{n,m}(G)) > χ_f(Δ_n(G))$. The chromatic number of $Δ_{n,m}(G)$ is also discussed.

The fractional chromatic number of $K_Δ$-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a simple graph $G$, let $χ_f(G)$ be the fractional chromatic number of $G$. In this paper, we aim to establish upper bounds on $χ_f(G)$ for those graphs $G$ with restrictions on the clique number. Namely, we prove that for $Δ\geq 4$, if $G$ has maximum degree at most $Δ$ and is $K_Δ$-free, then $χ_f(G) \leq Δ-\tfrac{1}{8}$ unless $G= C^2_8$ or $G = C_5\boxtimes K_2$. This im proves the result in [King, Lu, and Peng, SIAM J. Discrete Math., 26(2) (2012), pp. 452-471] for $Δ\geq 4$ and the result in [Katherine and King, SIAM J.Discrete Math., 27(2) (2013), pp. 1184-1208] for $Δ\in \{6,7,8\}$.
An eigenvalue bound for the fractional chromatic number
We show that Hoffman's sum of eigenvalues bound for the chromatic number is at least as good as the Lovász theta number, but no better than the ceiling of the fractional chromatic number. In order to do so, we display an interesting connection between this sum of eigenvalues bound and a generalization of the Lovász theta number introduced by Manber and Narasimhan in 1988.

Borel fractional colorings of Schreier graphs

Let $Γ$ be a countable group and let $G$ be the Schreier graph of the free part of the Bernoulli shift of $Γ$ (with respect to some finite subset $F \subseteq Γ$). We show that the Borel fractional chromatic number of $G$ is equal to $1$ over the measurable independence number of $G$. As a consequence, we asymptotically determine the Borel fractional chromatic number of $G$ when $Γ$ is the free group, answering a question of Meehan.

On multichromatic numbers of widely colorable graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A coloring is called $s$-wide if no walk of length $2s-1$ connects vertices of the same color. A graph is $s$-widely colorable with $t$ colors if and only if it admits a homomorphism into a universal graph $W(s,t)$. Tardif observed that the value of the $r^{\rm th}$ multichromatic number $χ_r(W(s,t))$ of these graphs is at least $t+2(r-1)$ and equality holds for $r=s=2$. He asked whether there is equality also for $r=s=3$. We show that $χ_s(W(s,t))=t+2(s-1)$ for all $s$ thereby answering Tardif's question. We observe that for large $r$ (with respect to $s$ and $t$ fixed) we cannot have equality and that for $s$ fixed and $t$ going to infinity the fractional chromatic number of $W(s,t)$ also tends to infinity. The latter is a simple consequence of another result of Tardif on the fractional chromatic number of generalized Mycielski graphs.

A note on fractional covers of a graph
Published in Art Discrete Appl. Math. 6(1), P1.06 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
A fractional colouring of a graph $G$ is a function that assigns a non-negative real value to all possible colour-classes of $G$ containing any vertex of $G$, such that the sum of these values is at least one for each vertex. The fractional chromatic number is the minimum sum of the values assigned by a fractional colouring over all possible such colourings of $G$. Introduced by Bosica and Tardif, fractional covers are an extension of fractional colourings whereby the real-valued function acts on all possible subgraphs of $G$ belonging to a given class of graphs. The fractional chromatic number turns out to be a special instance of the fractional cover number. In this work we investigate fractional covers acting on $(k+1)$-clique-free subgraphs of $G$ which, although sharing some similarities with fractional covers acting on $k$-colourable subgraphs of $G$, they exhibit some peculiarities. We first show that if a simple graph $G_2$ is a homomorphic image of a simple graph $G_1$, then the fractional cover number defined on the $(k+1)$-clique-free subgraphs of $G_1$ is bounded above by the corresponding number of $G_2$. We make use of this result to obtain bounds for the associated fractional cover number of graphs that are either $n$-colourable or $a\!\!:\!\!b$-colourable.

Distributed algorithms for fractional coloring
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study fractional coloring from the angle of distributed computing. Fractional coloring is the linear relaxation of the classical notion of coloring, and has many applications, in particular in scheduling. It was proved by Hasemann, Hirvonen, Rybicki and Suomela (2016) that for every real $α>1$ and integer $Δ$, a fractional coloring of total weight at most $α(Δ+1)$ can be obtained deterministically in a single round in graphs of maximum degree $Δ$, in the LOCAL model of computation. However, a major issue of this result is that the output of each vertex has unbounded size. Here we prove that even if we impose the more realistic assumption that the output of each vertex has constant size, we can find fractional colorings of total weight arbitrarily close to known tight bounds for the fractional chromatic number in several cases of interest. More precisely, we show that for any fixed $ε> 0$ and $Δ$, a fractional coloring of total weight at most $Δ+ε$ can be found in $O(\log^*n)$ rounds in graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ with no $K_{Δ+1}$, while finding a fractional coloring of total weight at most $Δ$ in this case requires $Ω(\log \log n)$ rounds for randomized algorithms and $Ω( \log n)$ rounds for deterministic algorithms. We also show how to obtain fractional colorings of total weight at most $2+ε$ in grids of any fixed dimension, for any $ε>0$, in $O(\log^*n)$ rounds. Finally, we prove that in sparse graphs of large girth from any proper minor-closed family we can find a fractional coloring of total weight at most $2+ε$, for any $ε>0$, in $O(\log n)$ rounds.

Relatively small counterexamples to Hedetniemi's conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hedetniemi conjectured in 1966 that $χ(G \times H) = \min\{χ(G), χ(H)\}$ for all graphs $G$ and $H$. Here $G\times H$ is the graph with vertex set $ V(G)\times V(H)$ defined by putting $(x,y)$ and $(x',y')$ adjacent if and only if $xx'\in E(G)$ and $yy'\in E(H)$. This conjecture received a lot of attention in the past half century. Recently, Shitov refuted this conjecture. Let $p$ be the minimum number of vertices in a graph of odd girth $7$ and fractional chromatic number greater than $3+4/(p-1)$. Shitov's proof shows that Hedetniemi's conjecture fails for some graphs with chromatic number about $p^22^{p+1} $ and with about $(p^22^{p+1})^{p^32^{p-1}} $ vertices. In this paper, we show that the conjecture fails already for some graphs $G$ and $H$ with chromatic number $3\lceil \frac {p+1}2 \rceil $ and with $p \lceil (p-1)/2 \rceil$ and $3 \lceil \frac {p+1}2 \rceil (p+1)-p$ vertices, respectively. The currently known upper bound for $p$ is $148$. Thus Hedetniemi's conjecture fails for some graphs $G$ and $H$ with chromatic number $225$, and with $10,952$ and $33,377$ vertices, respectively.
Coloring graphs by translates in the circle
Published • View PublicationBIB
The fractional and circular chromatic numbers are the two most studied non-integral refinements of the chromatic number of a graph. Starting from the definition of a coloring base of a graph, which originated in work related to ergodic theory, we formalize the notion of a gyrocoloring of a graph: the vertices are colored by translates of a single Borel set in the circle group, and neighbouring vertices receive disjoint translates. The corresponding gyrochromatic number of a graph always lies between the fractional chromatic number and the circular chromatic number. We investigate basic properties of gyrocolorings. In particular, we construct examples of graphs whose gyrochromatic number is strictly between the fractional chromatic number and the circular chromatic number. We also establish several equivalent definitions of the gyrochromatic number, including a version involving all finite abelian groups.
Dual Hoffman Bounds for the Stability and Chromatic Numbers Based on SDP
The notion of duality is a key element in understanding the interplay between the stability and chromatic numbers of a graph. This notion is a central aspect in the celebrated theory of perfect graphs, and is further and deeply developed in the context of the Lovász theta function and its equivalent characterizations and variants. The main achievement of this paper is the introduction of a new family of norms, providing upper bounds for the stability number, that are obtained from duality from the norms motivated by Hoffman's lower bound for the chromatic number and which achieve the (complementary) Lovász theta function at their optimum. As a consequence, our norms make it formal that Hoffman's bound for the chromatic number and the Delsarte-Hoffman ratio bound for the stability number are indeed dual. Further, we show that our new bounds strengthen the convex quadratic bounds for the stability number studied by Luz and Schrijver, and which achieve the Lovász theta function at their optimum. One of the key observations regarding weighted versions of these bounds is that, for any upper bound for the stability number of a graph which is a positive definite monotone gauge function, its gauge dual is a lower bound on the fractional chromatic number, and conversely. Our presentation is elementary and accessible to a wide audience.

A Note on Fractional DP-Coloring of Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
DP-coloring (also called correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring introduced by Dvořák and Postle in 2015. In 2019, Bernshteyn, Kostochka, and Zhu introduced a fractional version of DP-coloring. They showed that unlike the fractional list chromatic number, the fractional DP-chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted $χ_{_{DP}}^*(G)$, can be arbitrarily larger than $χ^*(G)$, the graph's fractional chromatic number. We generalize a result of Alon, Tuza, and Voigt (1997) on the fractional list chromatic number of odd cycles, and, in the process, show that for each $k \in \mathbb{N}$, $χ_{_{DP}}^*(C_{2k+1}) = χ^*(C_{2k+1})$. We also show that for any $n \geq 2$ and $m \in \mathbb{N}$, if $p^*$ is the solution in $(0,1)$ to $p=(1-p)^n$ then $χ_{_{DP}}^*(K_{n,m})\leq1/p^*$, and we prove a generalization of this result for multipartite graphs. Finally, we determine a lower bound on $χ_{_{DP}}^*(K_{2,m})$ for any $m \geq 3$.
Linear Programming Complementation
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we introduce a new operation for Linear Programming (LP), called LP complementation, which resembles many properties of LP duality. Given a maximisation (resp.~minimisation) LP $P$, we define its complement $Q$ as a specific minimisation (resp.~maximisation) LP with the same objective function as $P$. Our central result is the LP complementation theorem, that establishes the following relationship between the optimal value $\text{Opt}(P)$ of $P$ and the optimal value $\text{Opt}(Q)$ of its complement: $\frac{1}{\text{Opt}(P)}+\frac{1}{\text{Opt}(Q)}=1$. The LP complementation operation can be applied if and only if $\text{Opt}(P) > 1$. We then apply LP complementation to hypergraphs. For every hypergraph $H=(V,E)$, its dual is $H^*$ and we call $\overline{H}=(V,\{V\setminus e : e\in E\})$ the complement of $H$. For the covering LP $K(H)$ we obtain $\frac{1}{ \text{Opt}( K(H^*) ) }+\frac{1}{\text{Opt}( K(\overline{H}) ) } = 1$ (and similarly for packing, matching and transversal LPs). We then consider \emph{fractional graph theory}. We prove that the LP for the \Define{fractional in-dominating number} of a digraph $D$ is the complement of the LP for the \Define{fractional total out-dominating number} of the digraph complement of $D$. We also establish that the fractional matching number of a matroid coincides with its edge toughness. Finally, we introduce the problem \text{Vertex Cover with Budget (VCB)}: for a graph $G$ and a positive integer $b$, what is the maximum number $t_b$ of vertex covers $S_1, \dots, S_{t_b}$ of $G$, such that every vertex appears in at most $b$ vertex covers? We relate \text{VCB} with the LP $Q_G$ for the fractional chromatic number of $G$: as $b \to \infty$, $t_b \sim t_f \cdot b$, where $t_f$ is the optimal value of the complement LP of $Q_G$.

Fractional cocoloring of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The cochromatic number $Z(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the fewest number of colors needed to color the vertices of $G$ so that each color class is a clique or an independent set. In a fractional cocoloring of $G$ a non-negative weight is assigned to each clique and independent set so that for each vertex $v$, the sum of the weights of all cliques and independent sets containing $v$ is at least one. The smallest total weight of such a fractional cocoloring of $G$ is the fractional cochromatic number $Z_f(G)$. In this paper we prove results for the fractional cochromatic number $Z_f(G)$ that parallel results for $Z(G)$ and the well studied fractional chromatic number $χ_f{(G)}$. For example $Z_f(G)=χ_f(G)$ when $G$ is triangle-free, except when the only nontrivial component of $G$ is a star. More generally, if $G$ contains no $k$-clique, then $Z_f(G)\le χ_f(G)\le Z_f(G)+R(k,k)$. Moreover, every graph $G$ with $χ_f(G)=m$ contains a subgraph $H$ with $Z_f(H)\ge (\frac 14 - o(1))\frac m{\log_2 m}$. We also prove that the maximum value of $Z_f(G)$ over all graphs $G$ of order $n$ is $Θ(n/\log n)$, and the maximum over all graphs embedded on an orientable surface of genus $g$ is $Θ(\sqrt g / \log g)$.
