Fractional chromatic number, maximum degree and girth
We introduce a new method for computing bounds on the independence number and fractional chromatic number of classes of graphs with local constraints, and apply this method in various scenarios. We establish a formula that generates a general upper bound for the fractional chromatic number of triangle-free graphs of maximum degree~$Δ\ge 3$. This upper bound matches that deduced from the fractional version of Reed's bound for small values of~$Δ$, and improves it when~$Δ\ge 17$, transitioning smoothly to the best possible asymptotic regime, barring a breakthrough in Ramsey theory. Focusing on smaller values of~$Δ$, we also demonstrate that every graph of girth at least~$7$ and maximum degree~$Δ$ has fractional chromatic number at most~$1+ \min_{k \in \mathbb{N}} \frac{2Δ+ 2^{k-3}}{k}$. In particular, the fractional chromatic number of a graph of girth~$7$ and maximum degree~$Δ$ is at most~$\frac{2Δ+9}{5}$ when~$Δ\in [3,8]$, at most~$\frac{Δ+7}{3}$ when~$Δ\in [8,20]$, at most~$\frac{2Δ+23}{7}$ when~$Δ\in [20,48]$, and at most~$\fracΔ{4}+5$ when~$Δ\in [48,112]$. In addition, we also obtain new lower bounds on the independence ratio of graphs of maximum degree~$Δ\in \{3,4,5\}$ and girth~$g\in \{6,\dotsc,12\}$, notably~$1/3$ when~$(Δ,g)=(4,10)$ and~$2/7$ when~$(Δ,g)=(5,8)$.

It has recently been observed by Zuiddam that finite graphs form a preordered commutative semiring under the graph homomorphism preorder together with join and disjunctive product as addition and multiplication, respectively. This led to a new characterization of the Shannon capacity $Θ$ via Strassen's Positivstellensatz: $Θ(\bar{G}) = \inf_f f(G)$, where $f : \mathsf{Graph} \to \mathbb{R}_+$ ranges over all monotone semiring homomorphisms.
Constructing and classifying graph invariants $\mathsf{Graph} \to \mathbb{R}_+$ which are monotone under graph homomorphisms, additive under join, and multiplicative under disjunctive product is therefore of major interest. We call such invariants semiring-homomorphic. The only known such invariants are all of a fractional nature: the fractional chromatic number, the projective rank, the fractional Haemers bounds, as well as the Lovász number (with the latter two evaluated on the complementary graph). Here, we provide a unified construction of these invariants based on linear-like semiring families of graphs. Along the way, we also investigate the additional algebraic structure on the semiring of graphs corresponding to fractionalization.
Linear-like semiring families of graphs are a new concept of combinatorial geometry different from matroids which may be of independent interest.
Occupancy fraction, fractional colouring, and triangle fraction
Given $\varepsilon>0$, there exists $f_0$ such that, if $f_0 \le f \le Δ^2+1$, then for any graph $G$ on $n$ vertices of maximum degree $Δ$ in which the neighbourhood of every vertex in $G$ spans at most $Δ^2/f$ edges, (i) an independent set of $G$ drawn uniformly at random has at least $(1/2-\varepsilon)(n/Δ)\log f$ vertices in expectation, and (ii) the fractional chromatic number of $G$ is at most $(2+\varepsilon)Δ/\log f$. These bounds cannot in general be improved by more than a factor $2$ asymptotically. One may view these as stronger versions of results of Ajtai, Komlós and Szemerédi (1981) and Shearer (1983). The proofs use a tight analysis of the hard-core model.
1-subdivisions, fractional chromatic number and Hall ratio
The Hall ratio of a graph G is the maximum of |V(H)|/alpha(H) over all subgraphs H of G. Clearly, the Hall ratio of a graph is a lower bound for the fractional chromatic number. It has been asked whether conversely, the fractional chromatic number is upper bounded by a function of the Hall ratio. We answer this question in negative, by showing two results of independent interest regarding 1-subdivisions (the 1-subdivision of a graph is obtained by subdividing each edge exactly once).
* For every c > 0, every graph of sufficiently large average degree contains as a subgraph the 1-subdivision of a graph of fractional chromatic number at least c.
* For every d > 0, there exists a graph G of average degree at least d such that every graph whose 1-subdivision appears as a subgraph of G has Hall ratio at most 18.
We also discuss the consequences of these results in the context of graph classes with bounded expansion.

In a fractional coloring, vertices of a graph are assigned measurable subsets of the real line and adjacent vertices receive disjoint subsets; the fractional chromatic number of a graph is at most $k$ if it has a fractional coloring in which each vertex receives a subset of $[0, 1]$ of measure at least $1/k$. We introduce and develop the theory of "fractional colorings with local demands" wherein each vertex "demands" a certain amount of color that is determined by local parameters such as its degree or the clique number of its neighborhood. This framework provides the natural setting in which to generalize degree-sequence type bounds on the independence number. Indeed, by Linear Programming Duality, all of the problems we study have an equivalent formulation as a problem concerning weighted independence numbers, and they often imply new bounds on the independence number.
Our results and conjectures are inspired by many of the most classical results and important open problems concerning the independence number and the chromatic number, often simultaneously. We conjecture a local strengthening of both Shearer's bound on the independence number of triangle-free graphs and the fractional relaxation of Molloy's recent bound on their chromatic number, as well as a longstanding problem of Ajtai et al.\ on the independence number of $K_r$-free graphs and the fractional relaxations of Reed's $ω, Δ, χ$ Conjecture and the Total Coloring Conjecture. We prove an approximate version of the first two, and we prove "local demands" versions of Vizing's Theorem and of some $χ$-boundedness results.
Counterexamples to a conjecture of Harris on Hall ratio
The Hall ratio of a graph $G$ is the maximum value of $v(H) / α(H)$ taken over all non-null subgraphs $H$ of $G$. For any graph, the Hall ratio is a lower-bound on its fractional chromatic number. In this note, we present various constructions of graphs whose fractional chromatic number grows much faster than their Hall ratio. This refutes a conjecture of Harris.

A subset $A \subset \mathbb R^2$ is said to avoid distance $1$ if: $\forall x,y \in A, \left\| x-y \right\|_2 \neq 1.$ In this paper we study the number $m_1(\mathbb R^2)$ which is the supremum of the upper densities of measurable sets avoiding distance 1 in the Euclidean plane. Intuitively, $m_1(\mathbb R^2)$ represents the highest proportion of the plane that can be filled by a set avoiding distance 1. This parameter is related to the fractional chromatic number $χ_f(\mathbb R^2)$ of the plane.
We establish that $m_1(\mathbb R^2) \leq 0.25647$ and $χ_f(\mathbb R^2) \geq 3.8991$.
Fractional coloring of planar graphs of girth five
A graph G is (a:b)-colorable if there exists an assignment of b-element subsets of {1,...,a} to vertices of G such that sets assigned to adjacent vertices are disjoint. We first show that for every triangle-free planar graph G and a vertex x of G, the graph G has a set coloring phi by subsets of {1,...,6} such that |phi(v)|>=2 for each vertex v of G and |phi(x)|=3. As a corollary, every triangle-free planar graph on n vertices is (6n:2n+1)-colorable. We further use this result to prove that for every Delta, there exists a constant M_Delta such that every planar graph G of girth at least five and maximum degree Delta is (6M_Delta:2M_Delta+1)-colorable. Consequently, planar graphs of girth at least five with bounded maximum degree Delta have fractional chromatic number at most 3-3/(2M_Delta+1).

We prove that any triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $d$ contains a bipartite induced subgraph of minimum degree at least $d^2/(2n)$. This is sharp up to a logarithmic factor in $n$. Relatedly, we show that the fractional chromatic number of any such triangle-free graph is at most the minimum of $n/d$ and $(2+o(1))\sqrt{n/\log n}$ as $n\to\infty$. This is sharp up to constant factors. Similarly, we show that the list chromatic number of any such triangle-free graph is at most $O(\min\{\sqrt{n},(n\log n)/d\})$ as $n\to\infty$.
Relatedly, we also make two conjectures. First, any triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices has fractional chromatic number at most $(\sqrt{2}+o(1))\sqrt{n/\log n}$ as $n\to\infty$. Second, any triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices has list chromatic number at most $O(\sqrt{n/\log n})$ as $n\to\infty$.

It is well known that for any integers $k$ and $g$, there is a graph with chromatic number at least $k$ and girth at least $g$. In 1960's, Erdős and Hajnal conjectured that for any $k$ and $g$, there exists a number $h(k,g)$, such that every graph with chromatic number at least $h(k,g)$ contains a subgraph with chromatic number at least $k$ and girth at least $g$. In 1977, Rödl proved the case for $g=4$ and arbitrary $k$. We prove the fractional chromatic number version of Rödl's result.

It is well known that a random subgraph of the complete graph $K_n$ has chromatic number $Θ(n/\log n)$ w.h.p. Boris Bukh asked whether the same holds for a random subgraph of any $n$-chromatic graph, at least in expectation. In this paper it is shown that for every graph, whose fractional chromatic number is at least $n$, the fractional chromatic number of its random subgraph is at least $n/(8\log_2(4n))$ with probability more than $1-\frac{1}{2n}$. This gives the affirmative answer for a strengthening of Bukh's question for the fractional chromatic number.

In this note, we present a fractional version of Haemers' bound on the Shannon capacity of a graph, which is originally due to Blasiak. This bound is a common strengthening of both Haemers' bound and the fractional chromatic number of a graph. We show that this fractional version outperforms any bound on the Shannon capacity that could be attained through Haemers' bound. We show also that this bound is multiplicative, unlike Haemers' bound.
Fractional DP-Colorings of Sparse Graphs

DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring developed recently by Dvořák and Postle. In this paper we introduce and study the fractional DP-chromatic number $χ_{DP}^\ast(G)$. We characterize all connected graphs $G$ such that $χ_{DP}^\ast(G) \leqslant 2$: they are precisely the graphs with no odd cycles and at most one even cycle. By a theorem of Alon, Tuza, and Voigt, the fractional list-chromatic number $χ_\ell^\ast(G)$ of any graph $G$ equals its fractional chromatic number $χ^\ast(G)$. This equality does not extend to fractional DP-colorings. Moreover, we show that the difference $χ^\ast_{DP}(G) - χ^\ast(G)$ can be arbitrarily large, and, furthermore, $χ^\ast_{DP}(G) \geq d/(2 \ln d)$ for every graph $G$ of maximum average degree $d \geq 4$. On the other hand, we show that this asymptotic lower bound is tight for a large class of graphs that includes all bipartite graphs as well as many graphs of high girth and high chromatic number.

We study graphon counterparts of the chromatic and the clique number, the fractional chromatic number, the b-chromatic number, and the fractional clique number. We establish some basic properties of the independence set polytope in the graphon setting, and duality properties between the fractional chromatic number and the fractional clique number. We present a notion of perfect graphons and characterize them in terms of induced densities of odd cycles and its complements.
On Graphs and the Gotsman-Linial Conjecture for d = 2
We give an infinite class of counterexamples to the Gotsman-Linial conjecture when d = 2. On the other hand, we establish an asymptotic form of the conjecture for quadratic threshold functions whose non-zero quadratic terms define a graph with either low fractional chromatic number or few edges. Our techniques are elementary and our exposition is self-contained, if you're into that.
Homomorphism bounds and edge-colourings of $K_4$-minor-free graphs

We present a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph of odd-girth $2k+1$ to bound the class of $K_4$-minor-free graphs of odd-girth (at least) $2k+1$, that is, to admit a homomorphism from any such $K_4$-minor-free graph. This yields a polynomial-time algorithm to recognize such bounds. Using this condition, we first prove that every $K_4$-minor free graph of odd-girth $2k+1$ admits a homomorphism to the projective hypercube of dimension $2k$. This supports a conjecture of the third author which generalizes the four-color theorem and relates to several outstanding conjectures such as Seymour's conjecture on edge-colorings of planar graphs. Strengthening this result, we show that the Kneser graph $K(2k+1,k)$ satisfies the conditions, thus implying that every $K_4$-minor free graph of odd-girth $2k+1$ has fractional chromatic number exactly $2+\frac{1}{k}$. Knowing that a smallest bound of odd-girth $2k+1$ must have at least ${k+2 \choose 2}$ vertices, we build nearly optimal bounds of order $4k^2$. Furthermore, we conjecture that the suprema of the fractional and circular chromatic numbers for $K_4$-minor-free graphs of odd-girth $2k+1$ are achieved by a same bound of odd-girth $2k+1$. If true, this improves, in the homomorphism order, earlier tight results on the circular chromatic number of $K_4$-minor-free graphs. We support our conjecture by proving it for the first few cases. Finally, as an application of our work, and after noting that Seymour provided a formula for calculating the edge-chromatic number of $K_4$-minor-free multigraphs, we show that stronger results can be obtained in the case of $K_4$-minor-free regular multigraphs.
An inertial lower bound for the chromatic number of a graph

Let $χ(G$) and $χ_f(G)$ denote the chromatic and fractional chromatic numbers of a graph $G$, and let $(n^+ , n^0 , n^-)$ denote the inertia of $G$. We prove that:
\[ 1 + \max\left(\frac{n^+}{n^-} , \frac{n^-}{n^+}\right) \le χ(G) \mbox{ and conjecture that } 1 + \max\left(\frac{n^+}{n^-} , \frac{n^-}{n^+}\right) \le χ_f(G) \]
We investigate extremal graphs for these bounds and demonstrate that this inertial bound is not a lower bound for the vector chromatic number. We conclude with a discussion of asymmetry between $n^+$ and $n^-$, including some Nordhaus-Gaddum bounds for inertia.
Some results on chromatic number as a function of triangle count

A variety of powerful extremal results have been shown for the chromatic number of triangle-free graphs. Three noteworthy bounds are in terms of the number of vertices, edges, and maximum degree given by Poljak \& Tuza (1994), and Johansson. There have been comparatively fewer works extending these types of bounds to graphs with a small number of triangles. One noteworthy exception is a result of Alon et. al (1999) bounding the chromatic number for graphs with low degree and few triangles per vertex; this bound is nearly the same as for triangle-free graphs. This type of parametrization is much less rigid, and has appeared in dozens of combinatorial constructions.
In this paper, we show a similar type of result for $χ(G)$ as a function of the number of vertices $n$, the number of edges $m$, as well as the triangle count (both local and global measures). Our results smoothly interpolate between the generic bounds true for all graphs and bounds for triangle-free graphs. Our results are tight for most of these cases; we show how an open problem regarding fractional chromatic number and degeneracy in triangle-free graphs can resolve the small remaining gap in our bounds.
Dichromatic number and fractional chromatic number

The dichromatic number of a graph $G$ is the maximum integer $k$ such that there exists an orientation of the edges of $G$ such that for every partition of the vertices into fewer than $k$ parts, at least one of the parts must contain a directed cycle under this orientation. In 1979, Erdős and Neumann-Lara conjectured that if the dichromatic number of a graph is bounded, so is its chromatic number. We make the first significant progress on this conjecture by proving a fractional version of the conjecture. While our result uses stronger assumption about the fractional chromatic number, it also gives a much stronger conclusion: If the fractional chromatic number of a graph is at least $t$, then the fractional version of the dichromatic number of the graph is at least $\tfrac{1}{4}t/\log_2(2et^2)$. This bound is best possible up to a small constant factor. Several related results of independent interest are given.
Symmetric Graphs with respect to Graph Entropy

Let $F_G(P)$ be a functional defined on the set of all the probability distributions on the vertex set of a graph $G$. We say that $G$ is \emph{symmetric with respect to $F_G(P)$} if the uniform distribution on $V(G)$ maximizes $F_G(P)$. Using the combinatorial definition of the entropy of a graph in terms of its vertex packing polytope and the relationship between the graph entropy and fractional chromatic number, we characterize all graphs which are symmetric with respect to graph entropy. We show that a graph is symmetric with respect to graph entropy if and only if its vertex set can be uniformly covered by its maximum size independent sets. Furthermore, given any strictly positive probability distribution $P$ on the vertex set of a graph $G$, we show that $P$ is a maximizer of the entropy of graph $G$ if and only if its vertex set can be uniformly covered by its maximum weighted independent sets. We also show that the problem of deciding if a graph is symmetric with respect to graph entropy, where the weight of the vertices is given by probability distribution $P$, is co-NP-hard.
