Equitable Partition Theorem of Tensors and Spectrum of Generalized Power Hypergraphs
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, 555(2018) 21-38 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present an equitable partition theorem of tensors, which gives the relations between $H$-eigenvalues of a tensor and its quotient equitable tensor and extends the equitable partitions of graphs to hypergraphs. Furthermore, with the aid of it, some properties and $H$-eigenvalues of the generalized power hypergraphs are obtained, which extends some known results, including some results of Yuan, Qi and Shao.

Unicyclic signed graphs with maximal energy
Let $x_1, x_2, \dots, x_n$ be the eigenvalues of a signed graph $Γ$ of order $n$. The energy of $Γ$ is defined as $E(Γ)=\sum^{n}_{j=1}|x_j|.$ Let $\mathcal{P}_n^4$ be obtained by connecting a vertex of the negative circle $(C_4,{\overlineσ})$ with a terminal vertex of the path $P_{n-4}$. In this paper, we show that for $n=4,6$ and $n \geq 8,$ $\mathcal{P}_n^4$ has the maximal energy among all connected unicyclic $n$-vertex signed graphs, except the cycles $C_5^+, C_7^+.$

Hypergraph expanders of all uniformities from Cayley graphs
Published in Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. 121(5): 1311--1336 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
Hypergraph expanders are hypergraphs with surprising, non-intuitive expansion properties. In a recent paper, the first author gave a simple construction, which can be randomized, of $3$-uniform hypergraph expanders with polylogarithmic degree. We generalize this construction, giving a simple construction of $r$-uniform hypergraph expanders for all $r \geq 3$.

A Rainbow Dirac's Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
A famous theorem of Dirac states that any graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $n/2$ has a Hamilton cycle. Such graphs are called Dirac graphs. Strengthening this result, we show the existence of rainbow Hamilton cycles in $μn$-bounded colourings of Dirac graphs for sufficiently small $μ>0$.

The Double Star Sequences and the General Second Zagreb Index
Published in Matematychni Studii, Vol. 51, No.2, 2019, 115-123 • View PublicationBIB
For a simple graph we introduce notions of the double star sequence, the double star frequently sequence and prove that these sequences are inverses of each other. As a consequence, we express the general second Zagreb index in terms of the double star sequence. Also, we calculate the ordinary generating function and a linear recurrence relation for the sequence of the general second Zagreb indexes.
Finitely forcible graphons with an almost arbitrary structure
Published in Version published by Discrete Analysis 2020:9 • View PublicationBIB
Graphons are analytic objects representing convergent sequences of large graphs. A graphon is said to be finitely forcible if it is determined by finitely many subgraph densities, i.e., if the asymptotic structure of graphs represented by such a graphon depends only on finitely many density constraints. Such graphons appear in various scenarios, particularly in extremal combinatorics. Lovasz and Szegedy conjectured that all finitely forcible graphons possess a simple structure. This was disproved in a strong sense by Cooper, Kral and Martins, who showed that any graphon is a subgraphon of a finitely forcible graphon. We strenghten this result by showing for every $\varepsilon>0$ that any graphon spans a $1-\varepsilon$ proportion of a finitely forcible graphon.

The extremal function for $K_9^=$ minors
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove the extremal function for $K_9^=$ minors, where $K_9^=$ denotes the complete graph $K_9$ with two edges removed. In particular, we show that any graph with $n$ vertices and at least $6n - 20$ edges either contains a $K_9^=$ minor or is isomorphic to a graph obtained from disjoint copies of $K_8$ and $K_{2, 2, 2, 2, 2}$ by identifying cliques of size 5. We utilize computer assistance to prove one of our lemmas.

Graphs with no $K_9^=$ minor are 10-colorable
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hadwiger's conjecture claims that any graph with no $K_t$ minor is $(t - 1)$-colorable. This has been proved for $t \le 6$, but remains open for $t \ge 7$. As a variant of this conjecture, graphs with no $K_t^=$ minor have been considered, where $K_t^=$ denotes the complete graph with two edges removed. It has been shown that graphs with no $K_t^=$ minor are $(2t - 8)$-colorable for $t \in \{7, 8\}$. In this paper, we extend this result to the case $t = 9$ and show that graphs with no $K_9^=$ minor are $10$-colorable.
Sharp conditions for the existence of an even $[a,b]$-factor in a graph
Let $a$ and $b$ be positive integers. An even $[a,b]$-factor of a graph $G$ is a spanning subgraph $H$ such that for every vertex $v \in V(G)$, $d_H(v)$ is even and $a \le d_H(v) \le b$. Matsuda conjectured that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex 2-edge-connected graph such that $n \ge 2a+b+\frac{a^2-3a}b - 2$, $δ(G) \ge a$, and $σ_2(G) \ge \frac{2an}{a+b}$, then $G$ has an even $[a,b]$-factor. In this paper, we provide counterexamples, which are highly connected. Furthermore, we give sharp sufficient conditions for a graph to have an even $[a,b]$-factor. For even $an$, we conjecture a lower bound for $λ_1(G)$ in an $n$-vertex graph to have an $[a,b]$-factor, where $λ_1(G)$ is the largest eigenvalue of $G$.

The degrees, number of edges, spectral radius and weakly Hamilton-connectedness of bipartite graphs
A path of a graph $G$ is called a Hamilton path if it passes through all the vertices of $G$. A graph is Hamilton-connected if any two vertices are connected by a Hamilton path. Note that any bipartite graph is not Hamilton-connected. We consider the weak version of Hamilton-connected property among bipartite graphs. A weakly Hamilton-connected graph is a balanced bipartite graph $G=(X,Y,E)$ that there is a Hamilton path between any vertex $x\in X$ and $y\in Y$. In this paper, we present some degrees, number of edges, and spectral radius conditions for a simple balanced bipartite graph to be weakly Hamilton-connected.

Dushnik-Miller dimension of d-dimensional tilings with boxes
Planar graphs are the graphs with Dushnik-Miller dimension at most three (W. Schnyder, Planar graphs and poset dimension, Order 5, 323-343, 1989). Consider the intersection graph of interior disjoint axis parallel rectangles in the plane. It is known that if at most three rectangles intersect on a point, then this intersection graph is planar, that is it has Dushnik-Miller dimension at most three. This paper aims at generalizing this from the plane to $R^d$ by considering tilings of $R^d$ with axis parallel boxes, where at most $d+1$ boxes intersect on a point. Such tilings induce simplicial complexes and we will show that those simplicial complexes have Dushnik-Miller dimension at most $d+1$.

Not all partial cubes are $Θ$-graceful
It is shown that the graph obtained by merging two vertices of two 4-cycles is not a $Θ$-graceful partial cube, thus answering in the negative a question by Brešar and Klavžar from [1], who asked whether every partial cube is $Θ$-graceful.

Regularity, matchings and Cameron-Walker graphs

Let $G$ be a simple graph and let $ν(G)$ be the matching number of $G$. It is well-known that $\reg I(G) \leqslant ν(G)+1$. In this paper we show that $\reg I(G) = ν(G)+1$ if and only if every connected component of $G$ is either a pentagon or a Cameron-Walker graph.

Fractional coloring of planar graphs of girth five
A graph G is (a:b)-colorable if there exists an assignment of b-element subsets of {1,...,a} to vertices of G such that sets assigned to adjacent vertices are disjoint. We first show that for every triangle-free planar graph G and a vertex x of G, the graph G has a set coloring phi by subsets of {1,...,6} such that |phi(v)|>=2 for each vertex v of G and |phi(x)|=3. As a corollary, every triangle-free planar graph on n vertices is (6n:2n+1)-colorable. We further use this result to prove that for every Delta, there exists a constant M_Delta such that every planar graph G of girth at least five and maximum degree Delta is (6M_Delta:2M_Delta+1)-colorable. Consequently, planar graphs of girth at least five with bounded maximum degree Delta have fractional chromatic number at most 3-3/(2M_Delta+1).

Reconfiguration of graphs with connectivity constraints
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ realizes the degree sequence $S$ if the degrees of its vertices is $S$. Hakimi gave a necessary and sufficient condition to guarantee that there exists a connected multigraph realizing $S$. Taylor later proved that any connected multigraph can be transformed into any other via a sequence of flips (maintaining connectivity at any step). A flip consists in replacing two edges $ab$ and $cd$ by the diagonals $ac$ and $bd$. In this paper, we study a generalization of this problem. A set of subsets of vertices $\mathcal{CC}$ is \emph{nested} if for every $C,C' \in \mathcal{CC}$ either $C \cap C' = \emptyset$ or one is included in the other. We are interested in multigraphs realizing a degree sequence $S$ and such that all the sets of a nested collection $\mathcal{CC}$ induce connected subgraphs. Such constraints naturally appear in tandem mass spectrometry. We show that it is possible to decide in polynomial if there exists a graph realizing $S$ where all the sets in $\mathcal{CC}$ induce connected subgraphs. Moreover, we prove that all such graphs can be obtained via a sequence of flips such that all the intermediate graphs also realize $S$ and where all the sets of $\mathcal{CC}$ induce connected subgraphs. Our proof is algorithmic and provides a polynomial time approximation algorithm on the shortest sequence of flips between two graphs whose ratio depends on the depth of the nested partition.

Spectrum of complex networks
Published • View PublicationBIB
The study of complex networks has been one of the most active fields in science in recent decades. Spectral properties of networks (or graphs that represent them) are of fundamental importance. Researchers have been investigating these properties for many years, and, based on numerical data, have raised a number of questions about the distribution of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors. In this paper, we give the solution to some of these questions. In particular, we determine the limiting distribution of (the bulk of) the spectrum as the size of the network grows to infinity and show that the leading eigenvectors are strongly localized. We focus on the preferential attachment graph, which is the most popular mathematical model for growing complex networks. Our analysis is, on the other hand, general and can be applied to other models.

Packing colorings of subcubic outerplanar graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph $G$ and a nondecreasing sequence $S=(s_1,\ldots,s_k)$ of positive integers, the mapping $c:V(G)\longrightarrow \{1,\ldots,k\}$ is called an $S$-packing coloring of $G$ if for any two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ in $c^{-1}(i)$, the distance between $x$ and $y$ is greater than $s_i$. The smallest integer $k$ such that there exists a $(1,2,\ldots,k)$-packing coloring of a graph $G$ is called the packing chromatic number of $G$, denoted $χ_ρ(G)$. The question of boundedness of the packing chromatic number in the class of subcubic (planar) graphs was investigated in several earlier papers; recently it was established that the invariant is unbounded in the class of all subcubic graphs. In this paper, we prove that the packing chromatic number of any 2-connected bipartite subcubic outerplanar graph is bounded by $7$. Furthermore, we prove that every subcubic triangle-free outerplanar graph has a $(1,2,2,2)$-packing coloring, and that there exists a subcubic outerplanar graph with a triangle that does not admit a $(1,2,2,2)$-packing coloring. In addition, there exists a subcubic triangle-free outerplanar graph that does not admit a $(1,2,2,3)$-packing coloring. A similar dichotomy is shown for bipartite outerplanar graphs: every such graph admits an $S$-packing coloring for $S=(1,3,\ldots,3)$, where $3$ appears $Δ$ times ($Δ$ being the maximum degree of vertices), and this property does not hold if one of the integers $3$ is replaced by $4$ in the sequence $S$.

Towards the linear arboricity conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
The linear arboricity of a graph $G$, denoted by $\text{la}(G)$, is the minimum number of edge-disjoint linear forests (i.e. forests in which every connected component is a path) in $G$ whose union covers all the edges of $G$. A famous conjecture due to Akiyama, Exoo, and Harary from 1980 asserts that $\text{la}(G)\leq \lceil (Δ(G)+1)/2 \rceil$, where $Δ(G)$ denotes the maximum degree of $G$. This conjectured upper bound would be best possible, as is easily seen by taking $G$ to be a regular graph. In this paper, we show that for every graph $G$, $\text{la}(G)\leq \fracΔ{2}+O(Δ^{2/3-α})$ for some $α> 0$, thereby improving the previously best known bound due to Alon and Spencer from 1992. For graphs which are sufficiently good spectral expanders, we give even better bounds. Our proofs of these results further give probabilistic polynomial time algorithms for finding such decompositions into linear forests.
Text-based Passwords Generated From Topological Graphic Passwords
Topological graphic passwords (Topsnut-gpws) are one of graph-type passwords, but differ from the existing graphical passwords, since Topsnut-gpws are saved in computer by algebraic matrices. We focus on the transformation between text-based passwords (TB-paws) and Topsnut-gpws in this article. Several methods for generating TB-paws from Topsnut-gpws are introduced; these methods are based on topological structures and graph coloring/labellings, such that authentications must have two steps: one is topological structure authentication, and another is text-based authentication. Four basic topological structure authentications are introduced and many text-based authentications follow Topsnut-gpws. Our methods are based on algebraic, number theory and graph theory, many of them can be transformed into polynomial algorithms. A new type of matrices for describing Topsnut-gpws is created here, and such matrices can produce TB-paws in complex forms and longer bytes. Estimating the space of TB-paws made by Topsnut-gpws is very important for application. We propose to encrypt dynamic networks and try to face: (1) thousands of nodes and links of dynamic networks; (2) large numbers of Topsnut-gpws generated by machines rather than human's hands. As a try, we apply spanning trees of dynamic networks and graphic groups (Topsnut-groups) to approximate the solutions of these two problems. We present some unknown problems in the end of the article for further research.

Domination Parameters of the Unitary Cayley Graph of $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The unitary Cayley graph of $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, denoted $X_n$, is the graph on $\{0,\dots,n-1\}$ where vertices $a$ and $b$ are adjacent if and only if $\gcd(a-b,n) = 1$. We answer a question of Defant and Iyer by constructing a family of infinitely many integers $n$ such that $γ_t(X_n) \leq g(n) - 2$, where $γ_t$ denotes the total domination number and $g$ denotes the Jacobsthal function. We determine the irredundance number, domination number, and lower independence number of certain direct products of complete graphs and give bounds for these parameters for any direct product of complete graphs. We provide upper bounds on the size of irredundant sets in direct products of balanced, complete multipartite graphs which are asymptotically correct for the unitary Cayley graphs of integers with a bounded smallest prime factor.
