A note on polyomino chains with extremum general sum-connectivity index
The general sum-connectivity index of a graph $G$ is defined as $χ_α(G)= \sum_{uv\in E(G)} (d_u + d_{v})^α$ where $d_{u}$ is degree of the vertex $u\in V(G)$, $α$ is a real number different from $0$ and $uv$ is the edge connecting the vertices $u,v$. In this note, the problem of characterizing the graphs having extremum $χ_α$ values from a certain collection of polyomino chain graphs is solved for $α<0$. The obtained results together with already known results (concerning extremum values of polyomino chain graphs) give the complete solution of the aforementioned problem.

Two conjectures in Ramsey-Turán theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given graphs $H_1,\ldots, H_k$, a graph $G$ is $(H_1,\ldots, H_k)$-free if there is a $k$-edge-colouring $φ:E(G)\rightarrow [k]$ with no monochromatic copy of $H_i$ with edges of colour $i$ for each $i\in[k]$. Fix a function $f(n)$, the Ramsey-Turán function $\textrm{RT}(n,H_1,\ldots,H_k,f(n))$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $(H_1,\ldots,H_k)$-free graph with independence number at most $f(n)$. We determine $\textrm{RT}(n,K_3,K_s,δn)$ for $s\in\{3,4,5\}$ and sufficiently small $δ$, confirming a conjecture of Erdős and Sós from 1979. It is known that $\textrm{RT}(n,K_8,f(n))$ has a phase transition at $f(n)=Θ(\sqrt{n\log n})$. However, the values of $\textrm{RT}(n,K_8, o(\sqrt{n\log n}))$ was not known. We determined this value by proving $\textrm{RT}(n,K_8,o(\sqrt{n\log n}))=\frac{n^2}{4}+o(n^2)$, answering a question of Balogh, Hu and Simonovits. The proofs utilise, among others, dependent random choice and results from graph packings.

A Vizing-type result for semi-total domination
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 258: 8-12, (2019) • View Publication • BIB
A set of vertices $S$ in a simple isolate-free graph $G$ is a semi-total dominating set of $G$ if it is a dominating set of $G$ and every vertex of $S$ is within distance 2 or less with another vertex of $S$. The semi-total domination number of $G$, denoted by $γ_{t2}(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a semi-total dominating set of $G$. In this paper, we study semi-total domination of Cartesian products of graphs. Our main result establishes that for any graphs $G$ and $H$, $γ_{t2}(G\,\square\, H)\ge \frac{1}{3}γ_{t2}(G)γ_{t2}(H)$.

Planar anti-Ramsey numbers of matchings
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a positive integer $n$ and a planar graph $H$, let $\mathcal{T}_n(H)$ be the family of all plane triangulations $T$ on $n$ vertices such that $T$ contains a subgraph isomorphic to $H$. The planar anti-Ramsey number of $H$, denoted $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, H)$, is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of a plane triangulation $T\in \mathcal{T}_n(H)$ such that $T$ contains no rainbow copy of $H$. In this paper we study planar anti-Ramsey numbers of matchings. For all $t\ge1$, let $M_t$ denote a matching of size $t$. We prove that for all $t\ge6$ and $n\ge 3t-6$, $2n+3t-15\le ar_{_{\mathcal{P}}}(n, {M}_t)\le 2n+4t-14$, which significantly improves the existing lower and upper bounds for $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, M_t)$. It seems that for each $t\ge6$, the lower bound we obtained is the exact value of $ar_{_{\mathcal{P}}}(n, {M}_t)$ for sufficiently large $n$. This is indeed the case for $M_6$. We prove that $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, M_6)=2n+3$ for all $n\ge30$.

Spanning trees in randomly perturbed graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A classical result of Komlós, Sárközy and Szemerédi states that every $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $(1/2+ o(1))n$ contains every $n$-vertex tree with maximum degree $O(n/\log{n})$ as a subgraph, and the bounds on the degree conditions are sharp. On the other hand, Krivelevich, Kwan and Sudakov recently proved that for every $n$-vertex graph $G_α$ with minimum degree at least $αn$ for any fixed $α>0$ and every $n$-vertex tree $T$ with bounded maximum degree, one can still find a copy of $T$ in $G_α$ with high probability after adding $O(n)$ randomly-chosen edges to $G_α$. We extend their results to trees with unbounded maximum degree. More precisely, for a given $n^{o(1)}\leq Δ\leq cn/\log n$ and $α>0$, we determine the precise number (up to a constant factor) of random edges that we need to add to an arbitrary $n$-vertex graph $G_α$ with minimum degree $αn$ in order to guarantee a copy of any fixed $n$-vertex tree $T$ with maximum degree at most~$Δ$ with high probability.
New Algorithms for Weighted $k$-Domination and Total $k$-Domination Problems in Proper Interval Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a positive integer $k$, a $k$-dominating set in a graph $G$ is a set of vertices such that every vertex not in the set has at least $k$ neighbors in the set. A total $k$-dominating set, also known as a $k$-tuple total dominating set, is a set of vertices such that every vertex of the graph has at least $k$ neighbors in the set. The problems of finding the minimum size of a $k$-dominating, respectively total $k$-dominating set, in a given graph, are referred to as $k$-domination, respectively total $k$-domination. These generalizations of the classical domination and total domination problems are known to be NP-hard in the class of chordal graphs, and, more specifically, even in the classes of split graphs (both problems) and undirected path graphs (in the case of total $k$-domination). On the other hand, it follows from recent work of Kang et al.~(2017) that these two families of problems are solvable in time $\mathcal{O}(|V(G)|^{6k+4})$ in the class of interval graphs. We develop faster algorithms for $k$-domination and total $k$-domination in the class of proper interval graphs, by means of reduction to a single shortest path computation in a derived directed acyclic graph with $\mathcal{O}(|V(G)|^{2k})$ nodes and $\mathcal{O}(|V(G)|^{4k})$ arcs. We show that a suitable implementation, which avoids constructing all arcs of the digraph, leads to a running time of $\mathcal{O}(|V(G)|^{3k})$. The algorithms are also applicable to the weighted case.

On the circular chromatic number of a subgraph of the Kneser graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $n,k,r$ be positive integers with $n \geq rk$ and $r \geq 2$. Consider a circle $C$ with~$n$ points~$1,\ldots,n$ in clockwise order. The $r$-stable \emph{interlacing graph} $\text{IG}_{n,k}^{(r)}$ is the graph with vertices corresponding to $k$-subsets $S$ of $\{1,...,n\}$ such that any two distinct points in~$S$ have distance at least~$r$ around the circle, and edges between~$k$-subsets $P$ and $Q$ if they \emph{interlace}: after removing the points in~$P$ from $C$, the points in~$Q$ are in different connected components. In this paper we prove that the circular chromatic number of $\text{IG}_{n,k}^{(r)}$ is equal to $ n/k $ (hence the chromatic number is $\lceil n/k \rceil$) and that its circular clique number is also $ n/k $. Furthermore, we show that its independence number is $\binom{n-(r-1)k-1}{k-1}$, thereby strengthening a result by Talbot.

Partitioning a graph into degenerate subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G = (V, E)$ be a connected graph with maximum degree $k\geq 3$ distinct from $K_{k+1}$. Given integers $s \geq 2$ and $p_1,\ldots,p_s\geq 0$, $G$ is said to be $(p_1, \dots, p_s)$-partitionable if there exists a partition of $V$ into sets~$V_1,\ldots,V_s$ such that $G[V_i]$ is $p_i$-degenerate for $i\in\{1,\ldots,s\}$. In this paper, we prove that we can find a $(p_1, \dots, p_s)$-partition of $G$ in $O(|V| + |E|)$-time whenever $1\geq p_1, \dots, p_s \geq 0$ and $p_1 + \dots + p_s \geq k - s$. This generalizes a result of Bonamy et al. (MFCS, 2017) and can be viewed as an algorithmic extension of Brooks' theorem and several results on vertex arboricity of graphs of bounded maximum degree. We also prove that deciding whether $G$ is $(p, q)$-partitionable is $\mathbb{NP}$-complete for every $k \geq 5$ and pairs of non-negative integers $(p, q)$ such that $(p, q) \not = (1, 1)$ and $p + q = k - 3$. This resolves an open problem of Bonamy et al. (manuscript, 2017). Combined with results of Borodin, Kostochka and Toft (\emph{Discrete Mathematics}, 2000), Yang and Yuan (\emph{Discrete Mathematics}, 2006) and Wu, Yuan and Zhao (\emph{Journal of Mathematical Study}, 1996), it also settles the complexity of deciding whether a graph with bounded maximum degree can be partitioned into two subgraphs of prescribed degeneracy.

Cycle Traversability for Claw-free Graphs and Polyhedral Maps
Let $G$ be a graph, and $v\in V(G)$ and $S\subseteq V(G)\backslash v$ of size at least $k$. An important result on graph connectivity due to Perfect states that, if $v$ and $S$ are $k$-linked, then a $(k-1)$-link between a vertex $v$ and $S$ can be extended to a $k$-link between $v$ and $S$ such that the endvertices of the $(k-1)$-link are also the endvertices of the $k$-link. We begin by proving a generalization of Perfect's result by showing that, if two disjoint sets $S_1$ and $S_2$ are $k$-linked, then a $t$-link ($t< k$) between two disjoint sets $S_1$ and $S_2$ can be extended to a $k$-link between $S_1$ and $S_2$ such that the endvertices of the $t$-link are preserved in the $k$-link. Next, we are able to use these results to show that a 3-connected claw-free graph always has a cycle passing through any given five vertices but avoiding any other one specified vertex. We also show that this result is sharp by exhibiting an infinite family of 3-connected claw-free graphs in which there is no cycle containing a certain set of six vertices but avoiding a seventh specified vertex. A direct corollary of our main result shows that, a 3-connected claw-free graph has a topological wheel minor $W_k$ with $k\le 5$ if and only if it has a vertex of degree at least $k$. Finally, we also show that a graph polyhedrally embedded in a surface always has a cycle passing through any given three vertices but avoiding any other specified vertex. The result is best possible in the sense that the polyhedral embedding assumption is necessary, and there are infinitely many graphs polyhedrally embedded in any surface having no cycle containing a certain set of four vertices but avoiding a fifth specified vertex.

Continuous Combinatorics of Abelian Group Actions
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper develops techniques which are used to answer a number of questions in the theory of equivalence relations generated by continuous actions of abelian groups. The methods center around the construction of certain specialized hyper-aperiodic elements, which produce compact subflows with useful properties. For example, we show that there is no continuous $3$-coloring of the Cayley graph on $F(2^{\mathbb{Z}^2})$, the free part of the shift action of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ on $2^{\mathbb{Z}^2}$. With earlier work of the authors this computes the continuous chromatic number of $F(2^{\mathbb{Z}^2})$ to be exactly $4$. Combined with marker arguments for the positive directions, our methods allow us to analyze continuous homomorphisms into graphs, and more generally equivariant maps into subshifts of finite type. We present a general construction of a finite set of "tiles" for $2^{\mathbb{Z}^n}$ (there are $12$ for $n=2$) such that questions about the existence of continuous homomorphisms into various structures reduce to finitary combinatorial questions about the tiles. This tile analysis is used to deduce a number of results about $F(2^{\mathbb{Z}^n})$.

Forbidden subgraphs for constant domination number
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 20 no. 1, Graph Theory (June 4, 2018) dmtcs:4364 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we characterize the sets $\mathcal{H}$ of connected graphs such that there exists a constant $c=c(\mathcal{H})$ satisfying $γ(G)\leq c$ for every connected $\mathcal{H}$-free graph $G$, where $γ(G)$ is the domination number of $G$.
Nonsingular Block Graphs: An Open Problem
A block graph is a graph in which every block is a complete graph. Let $G$ be a block graph and let $A(G)$ be its (0,1)-adjacency matrix. Graph $G$ is called nonsingular (singular) if $A(G)$ is nonsingular (singular). An interesting open problem, proposed in 2013 by Bapat and Roy, is to characterize nonsingular block graphs. In this article, we present some classes of nonsingular and singular block graphs and related conjectures.

Paths between colourings of sparse graphs
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 75 (2019) 169--171 • View Publication • BIB
The reconfiguration graph $R_k(G)$ of the $k$-colourings of a graph~$G$ has as vertex set the set of all possible $k$-colourings of $G$ and two colourings are adjacent if they differ on exactly one vertex. We give a short proof of the following theorem of Bousquet and Perarnau (\emph{European Journal of Combinatorics}, 2016). Let $d$ and $k$ be positive integers, $k \geq d + 1$. For every $ε> 0$ and every graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and maximum average degree $d - ε$, there exists a constant $c = c(d, ε)$ such that $R_k(G)$ has diameter $O(n^c)$. Our proof can be transformed into a simple polynomial time algorithm that finds a path between a given pair of colourings in $R_k(G)$.

Kernels by rainbow paths in arc-colored tournaments
Published • View Publication • BIB
For an arc-colored digraph $D$, define its {\em kernel by rainbow paths} to be a set $S$ of vertices such that (i) no two vertices of $S$ are connected by a rainbow path in $D$, and (ii) every vertex outside $S$ can reach $S$ by a rainbow path in $D$. In this paper, we show that it is NP-complete to decide whether an arc-colored tournament has a kernel by rainbow paths, where a {\em tournament} is an orientation of a complete graph. In addition, we show that every arc-colored $n$-vertex tournament with all its strongly connected $k$-vertex subtournaments, $3\leq k\leq n$, colored with at least $k-1$ colors has a kernel by rainbow paths, and the number of colors required cannot be reduced.

Upper bounds for domination numbers of graphs using Turán's Theorem and Lovász local lemma
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a connected graph of order $n$ with vertex set $V(G)$. A subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ is an $(a,b)$-dominating set if every vertex $v\in S$ is adjacent to at least $a$ vertices in $S$ and every $v\in V\setminus S$ is adjacent to at least $b$ vertices in $S$. The minimum cardinality of an $(a,b)$-dominating set of $G$ is the $(a,b)$-domination number of $G$, denoted by $γ_{a,b}(G)$. There are various results about upper bounds for $γ_{a,b}(G)$ when $G$ is regular or $a$ and $b$ are small numbers. In the first part of this paper, for a given graph $G$ with the minimum degree of $\max\{a,b\}$, we define a new graph $G'$ associated to $G$ and show that the independence number of this graph is related to $γ_{a,b}(G)$. In the next part, using Lovász local lemma, we give a randomized approach to improve previous results in some special cases.

Two comments on balls in vertex transitive graphs
We observe that a ball of radius $1$ in the grandfather graph can not be realized as a ball of radius $1$ in a finite vertex transitive graph. We remark on when a ball in a finite vertex transitive graph appears as a ball in an infinite vertex transitive graph.

Determination of the 4-genus of a complete graph (with an appendix)
In this paper, the quadrangular genus (4-genus) of the complete graph $K_p$ is shown to be $γ_4 (K_p) = \lceil {p(p-5)}/{8} \rceil +1$ for orientable surfaces. This means that $K_p$ is minimally embeddable in the closed orientable surface of genus $γ_4 (K_p)$ under the constraint that each face has length at least 4. In the most general setting, the genus of the complete graph was established by Ringel and Youngs and was mainly concerned with triangulations of surfaces. Nonetheless, since then a great deal of interest has also been generated in quadrangulations of surfaces. Hartsfield and Ringel were the first who considered minimal quadrangulations of surfaces. Sections 1--4 of this paper are essentially a reproduction of the original 1998 version as follows: Chen B., Lawrencenko S., Yang H. Determination of the 4-genus of a complete graph, submitted to Discrete Mathematics and withdrawn by S. Lawrencenko, June 1998, URL: https://t.co/cUg6R9Jwyw . More discussion on this 1998 version is held and some copyright issues around the quadrangular genus of complete graphs are clarified in the Appendix to the current version of the paper; the Appendix was written in 2017.

Exploiting symmetry in network analysis
Published in Sánchez-García, R.J. Exploiting symmetry in network analysis. Communications Physics 3, 87 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
Virtually all network analyses involve structural measures between pairs of vertices, or of the vertices themselves, and the large amount of symmetry present in real-world complex networks is inherited by such measures. This has practical consequences which have not yet been explored in full generality, nor systematically exploited by network practitioners. Here we study the effect of network symmetry on arbitrary network measures, and show how this can be exploited in practice in a number of ways, from redundancy compression, to computational reduction. We also uncover the spectral signatures of symmetry for an arbitrary network measure such as the graph Laplacian. Computing network symmetries is very efficient in practice, and we test real-world examples up to several million nodes. Since network models are ubiquitous in the Applied Sciences, and typically contain a large degree of structural redundancy, our results are not only significant, but widely applicable.
Generalized distance domination problems and their complexity on graphs of bounded mim-width
Published • View Publication • BIB
We generalize the family of $(σ, ρ)$-problems and locally checkable vertex partition problems to their distance versions, which naturally captures well-known problems such as distance-$r$ dominating set and distance-$r$ independent set. We show that these distance problems are XP parameterized by the structural parameter mim-width, and hence polynomial on graph classes where mim-width is bounded and quickly computable, such as $k$-trapezoid graphs, Dilworth $k$-graphs, (circular) permutation graphs, interval graphs and their complements, convex graphs and their complements, $k$-polygon graphs, circular arc graphs, complements of $d$-degenerate graphs, and $H$-graphs if given an $H$-representation. To supplement these findings, we show that many classes of (distance) $(σ, ρ)$-problems are W[1]-hard parameterized by mim-width + solution size.
