On the spectral moments of trees with a given bipartition
For two given positive integers $p$ and $q$ with $p\leqslant q$, we denote $\mathscr{T}_n^{p, q}={T: T$ is a tree of order $n$ with a $(p, q)$-bipartition}. For a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, let $A(G)$ be its adjacency matrix with eigenvalues $λ_1(G), λ_2(G), ..., λ_n(G)$ in non-increasing order. The number $S_k(G):=\sum_{i=1}^{n}λ_i^k(G)\,(k=0, 1, ..., n-1)$ is called the $k$th spectral moment of $G$. Let $S(G)=(S_0(G), S_1(G),..., S_{n-1}(G))$ be the sequence of spectral moments of $G$. For two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, one has $G_1\prec_s G_2$ if for some $k\in {1,2,...,n-1}$, $S_i(G_1)=S_i(G_2) (i=0,1,...,k-1)$ and $S_k(G_1)<S_k(G_2)$ holds. In this paper, the last four trees, in the $S$-order, among $\mathscr{T}_n^{p, q} (4\leqslant p\leqslant q)$ are characterized.
Genus Ranges of 4-Regular Rigid Vertex Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a notion of genus range as a set of values of genera over all surfaces into which a graph is embedded cellularly, and we study the genus ranges of a special family of four-regular graphs with rigid vertices that has been used in modeling homologous DNA recombination. We show that the genus ranges are sets of consecutive integers. For any positive integer $n$, there are graphs with $2n $ vertices that have genus range ${m,m+1,...,m'}$ for all $0\le m<m'\le n$, and there are graphs with $2n-1$ vertices with genus range ${m,m+1,...,m'}$ for all $0\le m<m' <n$ or $0<m<m'\le n$. Further, we show that for every $n$ there is $k<n$ such that ${h}$ is a genus range for graphs with $2n-1$ and $2n$ vertices for all $h\le k$. It is also shown that for every $n$, there is a graph with $2n$ vertices with genus range ${0,1,...,n}$, but there is no such a graph with $2n-1$ vertices.

Using the subspace theorem to bound unit distances
We prove a special case of Erdős' unit distance problem using a corollary of the subspace theorem bounding the number of solutions of linear equations from a multiplicative group. We restrict our attention to unit distances coming from a multiplicative group of rank $r$ not too large. Specifically, given $\varepsilon>0$ and $n$ points in the plane, we construct the unit distance graph from these points and distances and use the corollary above to bound certain paths of length $k$ in the graph giving at most $n^{1+\varepsilon}$ unit distances from the group above. We require that the rank $r\le c\log n$ for some $c>0$ depending on $\varepsilon$. This extends a result of József Solymosi, Frank de Zeeuw and the author where we only considered unit distances that are roots of unity. Lastly we show that the lower bound configuration for the unit distance problem of Erdős consists of unit distances from a multiplicative subgroup of the form above.

A conjecture on equitable vertex arboricity of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Wu, Zhang and Li [4] conjectured that the set of vertices of any simple graph $G$ can be equitably partitioned into $\lceil(Δ(G)+1)/2\rceil$ subsets so that each of them induces a forest of $G$. In this note, we prove this conjecture for graphs $G$ with $Δ(G)\geq |G|/2$.

Beyond the Vizing's bound for at most seven colors
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph of maximum degree $Δ$. The edges of $G$ can be colored with at most $Δ+1$ colors by Vizing's theorem. We study lower bounds on the size of subgraphs of $G$ that can be colored with $Δ$ colors. Vizing's Theorem gives a bound of $\fracΔ{Δ+1}|E|$. This is known to be tight for cliques $K_{Δ+1}$ when $Δ$ is even. However, for $Δ=3$ it was improved to $26/31|E|$ by Albertson and Haas [Parsimonious edge colorings, Disc. Math. 148, 1996] and later to $6/7|E|$ by Rizzi [Approximating the maximum 3-edge-colorable subgraph problem, Disc. Math. 309, 2009]. It is tight for $B_3$, the graph isomorphic to a $K_4$ with one edge subdivided. We improve previously known bounds for $Δ\in{3,...,7}$, under the assumption that for $Δ=3,4,6$ graph $G$ is not isomorphic to $B_3$, $K_5$ and $K_7$, respectively. For $Δ\geq 4$ these are the first results which improve over the Vizing's bound. We also show a new bound for subcubic multigraphs not isomorphic to $K_3$ with one edge doubled. In the second part, we give approximation algorithms for the Maximum k-Edge-Colorable Subgraph problem, where given a graph G (without any bound on its maximum degree or other restrictions) one has to find a k-edge-colorable subgraph with maximum number of edges. In particular, when G is simple for k=3,4,5,6,7 we obtain approximation ratios of 13/15, 9/11, 19/22, 23/27 and 22/25, respectively. We also present a 7/9-approximation for k=3 when G is a multigraph. The approximation algorithms follow from a new general framework that can be used for any value of k.

The 1-2-3 Conjecture and related problems: a survey
The 1-2-3 Conjecture, posed in 2004 by Karonski, Luczak, and Thomason, is as follows: "If G is a graph with no connected component having exactly 2 vertices, then the edges of G may be assigned weights from the set {1,2,3} so that, for any adjacent vertices u and v, the sum of weights of edges incident to u differs from the sum of weights of edges incident to v." This survey paper presents the current state of research on the 1-2-3 Conjecture and the many variants that have been proposed in its short but active history.
New Directions in Bipartite Field Theories
Published in JHEP 1306:032,2013 • View Publication • BIB
We perform a detailed investigation of Bipartite Field Theories (BFTs), a general class of 4d N=1 gauge theories which are defined by bipartite graphs. This class of theories is considerably expanded by identifying a new way of assigning gauge symmetries to graphs. A new procedure is introduced in order to determine the toric Calabi-Yau moduli spaces of BFTs. For graphs on a disk, we show that the matroid polytope for the corresponding cell in the Grassmannian coincides with the toric diagram of the BFT moduli space. A systematic BFT prescription for determining graph reductions is presented. We illustrate our ideas in infinite classes of BFTs and introduce various operations for generating new theories from existing ones. Particular emphasis is given to theories associated to non-planar graphs.
The crossing number of pancake graph $P_4$ is six
The {\it crossing number} of a graph $G$ is the least number of pairwise crossings of edges among all the drawings of $G$ in the plane. The pancake graph is an important topology for interconnecting processors in parallel computers. In this paper, we prove the exact value of the crossing number of pancake graph $P_4$ is six.
Quantum graph walks II: Quantum walks on graph coverings
We give a new determinant expression for the characteristic polynomial of the bond scattering matrix of a quantum graph G. Also, we give a decomposition formula for the characteristic polynomial of the bond scattering matrix of a regular covering of G. Furthermore, we define an L-function of G, and give a determinant expression of it. As a corollary, we express the characteristic polynomial of the bond scattering matrix of a regular covering of G by means of its L-functions. As an application, we introduce three types of quantum graph walks, and treat their relation.

Inequalities on Bruhat graphs, R- and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Series A 120 (2013) no.2, 470--482 • View Publication • BIB
From a combinatorial perspective, we establish three inequalities on coefficients of $R$- and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for crystallographic Coxeter groups: (1) Nonnegativity of $(q-1)$-coefficients of $R$-polynomials, (2) a new criterion of rational singularities of Bruhat intervals by sum of quadratic coefficients of $R$-polynomials, (3) existence of a certain strict inequality (coefficientwise) of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. Our main idea is to understand Deodhar's inequality in a connection with a sum of $R$-polynomials and edges of Bruhat graphs.

On $r$-Equitable Coloring of Complete Multipartite Graphs
Published in Taiwanese Journal of Mathematics 13(7), 991-998, 2013 • View Publication • BIB
Let $r \geqslant 0$ and $k \geqslant 1$ be integers. We say that a graph $G$ has an $r$-equitable $k$-coloring if there exists a proper $k$-coloring of $G$ such that the sizes of any two color classes differ by at most $r$. The least $k$ such that a graph $G$ has an $r$-equitable $k$-coloring is denoted by $χ_{r=} (G)$, and the least $n$ such that a graph $G$ has an $r$-equitable $k$-coloring for all $k \geqslant n$ is denoted by $χ^*_{r=} (G)$. In this paper, we propose a necessary and sufficient condition for a complete multipartite graph $G$ to have an $r$-equitable $k$-coloring, and also give exact values of $χ_{r=} (G)$ and $χ^*_{r=} (G)$.

Spectral characterizations of almost complete graphs
We investigate when a complete graph $K_n$ with some edges deleted is determined by its adjacency spectrum. It is shown to be the case if the deleted edges form a matching, a complete graph $K_m$ provided $m \leq n-2$, or a complete bipartite graph. If the edges of a path are deleted we prove that the graph is determined by its generalized spectrum (that is, the spectrum together with the spectrum of the complement). When at most five edges are deleted from $K_n$, there is just one pair of nonisomorphic cospectral graphs. We construct nonisomorphic cospectral graphs (with cospectral complements) for all $n$ if six or more edges are deleted from $K_n$, provided $n$ is big enough.

Combinatorial Hopf algebraic description of the multiscale renormalization in quantum field theory
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 70 (2014), B70c • Search Publication
We define in this paper several Hopf algebras describing the combinatorics of the so-called multi-scale renormalization in quantum field theory. After a brief recall of the main mathematical features of multi-scale renormalization, we define assigned graphs, that are graphs with appropriate decorations for the multi-scale framework. We then define Hopf algebras on these assigned graphs and on the Gallavotti-Nicolò trees, particular class of trees encoding the supplementary informations of the assigned graphs. Several morphisms between these combinatorial Hopf algebras and the Connes-Kreimer algebra are given. Finally, scale dependent couplings are analyzed via this combinatorial algebraic setting.

An upper bound for the crossing number of bubble-sort graph Bn
The crossing number of a graph G is the minimum number of pairwise intersections of edges in a drawing of G. Motivated by the recent work [Faria, L., Figueiredo, C.M.H. de, Sykora, O., Vrt'o, I.: An improved upper bound on the crossing number of the hypercube. J. Graph Theory 59, 145-161 (2008)], we give an upper bound of the crossing number of n-dimensional bubble-sort graph Bn.

The crossing number of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of pairwise intersections of edges among all drawings of $G$. In this paper, we study the crossing number of $K_{n,n}-nK_2$, $K_n\times P_2$, $K_n\times P_3$ and $K_n\times C_4$.

The crossing number of a graph is the least number of crossings of edges among all drawings of the graph in the plane. In this article, we prove that the crossing number of the generalized Petersen graph P(10, 3) is equal to 6.
On the densities of cliques and independent sets in graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let r, s >= 2 be integers. Suppose that the number of blue r-cliques in a red/blue coloring of the edges of the complete graph K_n is known and fixed. What is the largest possible number of red s-cliques under this assumption? The well known Kruskal-Katona theorem answers this question for r=2 or s=2. Using the shifting technique from extremal set theory together with some analytical arguments, we resolve this problem in general and prove that in the extremal coloring either the blue edges or the red edges form a clique.

Zero forcing for inertia sets
Zero forcing is a combinatorial game played on a graph with a goal of turning all of the vertices of the graph black while having to use as few "unforced" moves as possible. This leads to a parameter known as the zero forcing number which can be used to give an upper bound for the maximum nullity of a matrix associated with the graph. We introduce a new variation on the zero forcing game which can be used to give an upper bound for the maximum nullity of a matrix associated with a graph that has $q$ negative eigenvalues. This gives some limits to the number of positive eigenvalues that such a graph can have and so can be used to form lower bounds for the inertia set of a graph.

Single Exponential FPT Algorithm for Interval Vertex Deletion and Interval Completion Problem
Let G be an input graph with n vertices and m edges and let k be a fixed parameter. We provide a single exponential FPT algorithm with running time O(c^kn(n+m)), c= min {18,k} that turns graph G into an interval graph by deleting at most k vertices from G. This solves an open problem posed by D.Marx [19]. We also provide a single exponential FPT algorithm with running time O(c^kn(n+m)), c= min {17,k} that turns G into an interval graph by adding at most$k edges. The first FPT algorithm with run time O(k^{2k}n^3m) appeared in STOC 2007 [24]. Our algorithm is the the first single exponential FPT algorithm that improves the running time of the previous algorithm. The algorithms are based on a structural decomposition of G into smaller subgraphs when G is free from small interval graph obstructions. The decomposition allows us to manage the search tree more efficiently.

Equitable vertex arboricity of graphs

An equitable $(t,k,d)$-tree-coloring of a graph $G$ is a coloring to vertices of $G$ such that the sizes of any two color classes differ by at most one and the subgraph induced by each color class is a forest of maximum degree at most $k$ and diameter at most $d$. The minimum $t$ such that $G$ has an equitable $(t',k,d)$-tree-coloring for every $t'\geq t$ is called the strong equitable $(k,d)$-vertex-arboricity and denoted by $va^{\equiv}_{k,d}(G)$. In this paper, we give sharp upper bounds for $va^{\equiv}_{1,1}(K_{n,n})$ and $va^{\equiv}_{k,\infty}(K_{n,n})$ by showing that $va^{\equiv}_{1,1}(K_{n,n})=O(n)$ and $va^{\equiv}_{k,\infty}(K_{n,n})=O(n^{\1/2})$ for every $k\geq 2$. It is also proved that $va^{\equiv}_{\infty,\infty}(G)\leq 3$ for every planar graph $G$ with girth at least 5 and $va^{\equiv}_{\infty,\infty}(G)\leq 2$ for every planar graph $G$ with girth at least 6 and for every outerplanar graph. We conjecture that $va^{\equiv}_{\infty,\infty}(G)=O(1)$ for every planar graph and $va^{\equiv}_{\infty,\infty}(G)\leq \lceil\frac{Δ(G)+1}{2}\rceil$ for every graph $G$.
