The Effect of Symmetry-preserving Operations on 3-Connectivity
In 2017, Brinkmann, Goetschalckx and Schein introduced a very general way of describing operations on embedded graphs that preserve all orientation-preserving symmetries of the graph. This description includes all well-known operations such as Dual, Truncation and Ambo. As these operations are applied locally, they are called local orientation-preserving symmetry-preserving operations (lopsp-operations). In this text we will use the general description of these operations to determine their effect on 3-connectivity. Recently it was proved that all lopsp-operations preserve 3-connectivity of graphs that have face-width at least three. We present a simple condition that characterises exactly which lopsp-operations preserve 3-connectivity for all embedded graphs, even for those with face-width less than three.
Splittings of Tangles and Spatial Graphs
Menasco proved the surprising result that if $G$ is a reduced, alternating, connected projection of a link $L$ and $G$ is prime then $L$ is prime. This result has been generalized to other classes of links, tangles, and spatial graphs. We draw attention to some issues with previous splitting results about tangles and spatial graphs, and obtain new more general results for tangles and spatial graphs.

For any positive definite rational quadratic form $q$ of $n$ variables let $G(\mathbb{Q}^n, q)$ denote the graph with vertices $\mathbb{Q}^n$ and $x, y \in \mathbb{Q}^n$ connected iff $q(x - y) = 1$. This notion generalises standard Euclidean distance graphs. In this article we study these graphs and show how to find the exact value of clique number of the $G(\mathbb{Q}^n, q)$.
We also prove rational analogue of the Beckman--Quarles theorem that any unit-preserving mapping of $\mathbb{Q}^n$ is an isometry.
Cliques of orders three and four in the Paley-type graphs
Let $n=2^s p_{1}^{α_{1}}\cdots p_{k}^{α_{k}}$, where $s=0$ or $1$, $α_i\geq 1$, and the distinct primes $p_i$ satisfy $p_i\equiv 1\pmod{4}$ for all $i=1, \ldots, k$. Let $\mathbb{Z}_n^\ast$ denote the group of units in the commutative ring $\mathbb{Z}_n$. Recently, we defined a Paley-type graph $G_n$ of order $n$ as the graph whose vertex set is $\mathbb{Z}_n$ and $xy$ is an edge if $x-y\equiv a^2\pmod n$ for some $a\in\mathbb{Z}_n^\ast$. The Paley-type graph $G_n$ resembles the classical Paley graph in a number of ways, and adds to the list of generalizations of the Paley graph. Computing the number of cliques of a particular order in a Paley graph or its generalizations has been of considerable interest. For primes $p\equiv 1\pmod 4$ and $α\geq 1$, by evaluating certain character sums, we found the number of cliques of order $3$ in $G_{p^α}$ and expressed the number of cliques of order $4$ in $G_{p^α}$ in terms of Jacobi sums. In this article we give combinatorial proofs and find the number of cliques of orders $3$ and $4$ in $G_n$ for all $n$ for which the graph is defined.
Counting graphic sequences via integrated random walks
Given an integer $n$, let $G(n)$ be the number of integer sequences $n-1\ge d_1\ge d_2\ge\dotsb\ge d_n\ge 0$ that are the degree sequence of some graph. We show that $G(n)=(c+o(1))4^n/n^{3/4}$ for some constant $c>0$, improving both the previously best upper and lower bounds by a factor of $n^{1/4}$ (up to polylog-factors).
Additionally, we answer a question of Royle, extend the values of $n$ for which the exact value of $G(n)$ is known from $n\le290$ to $n\le 1651$ and determine the asymptotic probability that the integral of a (lazy) simple symmetric random walk bridge remains non-negative.
A procedure to obtain symmetric cycles of any odd length using directed Hajós constructions
The dichromatic number of a digraph $D$ is the minimum number of colors of a vertex coloring of $D$ such that $D$ has no monochromatic cycles. The Hajós join were recently extended to digraphs (using the dichromatic number) by J. Bang-Jensen et. al. and Hajós (directed) operations is a tool to obtain r-(di)chromatic (di)graphs. J. Bang-Jensen et. al. posed in 2020 the problem of how to obtain the symmetric cycle of length 5 from symmetric cycles of length 3. We recently solved this problem by applying a genetic algorithm. In this article, a procedure is presented to construct any odd symmetric cycle by applying directed Hajós operations to symmetric cycles of length 3, thus, generalizing the known construction of the symmetric cycle of length 5. In addition, this procedure is analyzed to determine its computational complexity.
A New Construction of the Vietoris-Rips Complex
We present a new, inductive construction of the Vietoris-Rips complex, in which we take advantage of a small amount of unexploited combinatorial structure in the $k$-skeleton of the complex in order to avoid unnecessary comparisons when identifying its $(k+1)$-simplices. In doing so, we achieve a significant reduction in the number of comparisons required to construct the Vietoris-Rips compared to state-of-the-art algorithms, which is seen here by examining the computational complexity of the critical step in the algorithms. In experiments comparing a C/C++ implementation of our algorithm to the GUDHI v3.9.0 software package, this results in an observed $5$-$10$-fold improvement in speed of on sufficiently sparse Erdős-Rényi graphs with the best advantages as the graphs become sparser, as well as for higher dimensional Vietoris-Rips complexes. We further clarify that the algorithm described in Boissonnat and Maria (https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-33090-2_63) for the construction of the Vietoris-Rips complex is exactly the Incremental Algorithm from Zomorodian (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cag.2010.03.007), albeit with the additional requirement that the result be stored in a tree structure, and we explain how these techniques are different from the algorithm presented here.
On Hamiltonian Bypasses in Digraphs satisfying Meyniel-like Condition
Let $G$ be a strongly connected directed graph of order $p\geq 3$. In this paper, we show that if $d(x)+d(y)\geq 2p-2$ (respectively, $d(x)+d(y)\geq 2p-1$) for every pair of non-adjacent vertices $x, y$, then $G$ contains a Hamiltonian path (with only a few exceptional cases that can be clearly characterized) in which the initial vertex dominates the terminal vertex (respectively, $G$ contains two distinct verteces $x$ and $y$ such that there are two internally disjoint $(x,y)$-paths of lengths $p-2$ and $2$).
On a generalization of the spectral Mantel's theorem
Mantel's theorem is a classical result in extremal graph theory which implies that the maximum number of edges of a triangle-free graph of order $n$. In 1970, E. Nosal obtained a spectral version of Mantel's theorem which gave the maximum spectral radius of a triangle-free graph of order $n$. In this paper, the clique tensor of a graph $G$ is proposed and the spectral Mantel's theorem is extended via the clique tensor. Furthermore, a sharp upper bound of the number of cliques in $G$ via the spectral radius of the clique tensor is obtained. And we show that the results of this paper implies that a result of Erdős [Magyar Tud. Akad. Mat. Kutató Int. Közl. 7 (1962)] under certain conditions.
Self-complementary distance-regular Cayley graphs over abelian groups
In this paper, we study self-complementary distance-regular Cayley graphs over abelian groups. We prove that if a regular graph is self-complementary distance-regular, then it is self-complementary strongly regular. We also deal with self-complementary strongly regular Cayley graphs over abelian groups and give an example of a self-complementary strongly regular Cayley graph over a non-elementary abelian group.
Distance-regular graphs admitting a perfect $1$-code
In this paper, we study the problem that which of distance-regular graphs admit a perfect $1$-code. Among other results, we characterize distance-regular line graphs which admit a perfect $1$-code. Moreover, we characterize all known distance-regular graphs with small valency at most $4$, the distance-regular graphs with known putative intersection arrays for valency $5$, and all distance-regular graphs with girth $3$ and valency $6$ or $7$ which admit a perfect $1$-code.
Spectral extremal graphs without intersecting triangles as a minor
Let $F_s$ be the friendship graph obtained from $s$ triangles by sharing a common vertex. For fixed $s\ge 2$ and sufficiently large $n$, the $F_s$-free graphs of order $n$ which attain the maximal spectral radius was firstly characterized by Cioabă, Feng, Tait and Zhang [Electron. J. Combin. 27 (4) (2020)],and later uniquely determined by Zhai, Liu and Xue [Electron. J. Combin. 29 (3) (2022)]. Recently, the spectral extremal problems was widely studied for graphs containing no $H$ as a minor. For instance, Tait [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 166 (2019)], Zhai and Lin [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 157 (2022)] solved the case $H=K_r$ and $H=K_{s,t}$, respectively. Motivated by these results, we consider the spectral extremal problems in the case $H=F_s$. We shall prove that $K_s \vee I_{n-s}$ is the unique graph that attain the maximal spectral radius over all $n$-vertex $F_s$-minor-free graphs. Moreover, let $Q_t$ be the graph obtained from $t$ copies of the cycle of length $4$ by sharing a common vertex. We also determine the unique $Q_t$-minor-free graph attaining the maximal spectral radius. Namely, $K_t \vee M_{n-t}$, where $M_{n-t}$ is a graph obtained from an independent set of order $n-t$ by embedding a matching consisting of $\lfloor \frac{n-t}{2}\rfloor$ edges.
On the graph of non-degenerate linear $[n,2]_2$ codes
Consider the Grassmann graph of $k$-dimensional subspaces of an $n$-dimensional vector space over the $q$-element field, $1<k<n-1$. Every automorphism of this graph is induced by a semilinear automorphism of the corresponding vector space or a semilinear isomorphism to the dual vector space; the second possibility is realized only for $n=2k$. Let $Γ(n,k)_q$ be the subgraph of the Grassman graph formed by all non-degenerate linear $[n,k]_q$ codes. If $q\ge 3$ or $k\ge 3$, then every isomorphism of $Γ(n,k)_{q}$ to a subgraph of the Grassmann graph can be uniquely extended to an automorphism of the Grassmann graph. For $q=k=2$ there is an isomorphism of $Γ(n,k)_{q}$ to a subgraph of the Grassmann graph which does not have this property. In this paper, we show that such exceptional isomorphism is unique up to an automorphism of the Grassmann graph.
Large monochromatic components in hypergraphs with large minimum codegree
A result of Gyárfás says that for every $3$-coloring of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$, there is a monochromatic component of order at least $\frac{n}{2}$, and this is best possible when $4$ divides $n$. Furthermore, for all $k\geq 3$ and every $(k+1)$-coloring of the edges of the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph $K_n^{k}$, there is a monochromatic component of order at least $\frac{kn}{k+1}$ and this is best possible for all $n$.
Recently, Guggiari and Scott and independently Rahimi proved a strengthening of the graph case in the result above which says that the same conclusion holds if $K_n$ is replaced by any graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $\frac{5n}{6}-1$; furthermore, this bound on the minimum degree is best possible.
We prove a strengthening of the $k\geq 3$ case in the result above which says that the same conclusion holds if $K_n^k$ is replaced by any $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with minimum $(k-1)$-degree at least $\frac{kn}{k+1}-(k-1)$; furthermore, this bound on the $(k-1)$-degree is best possible.
A "network of networks" (from history to algebra)
Recall first the algebraic treatment of flows or tensions in a transportation network $N$, i.e. a connected antisymmetric 1-graph $G(X, U)$. Assume that, unusually, we take the values of flows (resp. tensions) in $\mathbb{C}$. So the algebraic lattices $Γ$ of flow (resp. tension) values associated to $G(X, U)$ are lattices of $\mathbb{C}$. These lattices are congruent modulo the action of the special linear group SL($2, \mathbb{C}$). Then, it is well known one can define a lattice function $G_{k}(Γ)$, as a modular function of weight $2k$, on the set $\mathcal{R}$ of all lattices of $\mathbb{C}$. Let now $N_{1}, N_{2}, ..., N_{p}$ be connected antisymmetric 1-graphs and $C_{n}$, the set of hermitian symmetric matrices $n \times n$. Let also $\mathcal{R'} $ be the set of all the lattices of $C_{n}$. The previous structure can be transposed to any $ n \times n $ symmetric hermitian matrices of flow (or tension) values of the $G_{i}$. In this case, the Siegel space $S_{n}= C_{n}$ replaces the Poincaré half-plane, and the symplectic group Sp$(2n, \mathbb{R})$ takes the place of the special linear group SL($2, \mathbb{C}$). We get now the new lattice function as a function of all the lattices of $S_{n}$, i.e. a model of the "network of networks" $\mathcal{R'}$. In the end, we study the tree of minimal length of $\mathcal{R'}$.
Edge Constrained Eulerian Extensions
In this paper we study Eulerian extensions with edge constraints and use the probabilistic method to establish sufficient conditions for a given connected graph to be a subgraph of a Eulerian graph containing $m$ edges, for a given number $m$.
Two spectral extremal results for graphs with given order and rank
The spectral radius and rank of a graph are defined to be the spectral radius and rank of its adjacency matrix, respectively. It is an important problem in spectral extremal graph theory to determine the extremal graph that has the maximum or minimum spectral radius over certain families of graphs. Monsalve and Rada [Extremal spectral radius of graphs with rank 4, Linear Algebra Appl. 609 (2021) 1-11] obtained the extremal graphs with maximum and minimum spectral radii among all graphs with order n and rank 4. In this paper, we first determine the extremal graph which attains the maximum spectral radius among all graphs with any given order n and rank r, and further determine the extremal graph which attains the minimum spectral radius among all graphs with order n and rank 5.
Application of Causal Inference Techniques to the Maximum Weight Independent Set Problem
A powerful technique for solving combinatorial optimization problems is to reduce the search space without compromising the solution quality by exploring intrinsic mathematical properties of the problems. For the maximum weight independent set (MWIS) problem, using an upper bound lemma which says the weight of any independent set not contained in the MWIS is bounded from above by the weight of the intersection of its closed neighbor set and the MWIS, we give two extension theorems -- independent set extension theorem and vertex cover extension theorem. With them at our disposal, two types of causal inference techniques (CITs) are proposed on the assumption that a vertex is strongly reducible (included or not included in all MWISs) or reducible (contained or not contained in a MWIS). One is a strongly reducible state-preserving technique, which extends a strongly reducible vertex into a vertex set where all vertices have the same strong reducibility. The other, as a reducible state-preserving technique, extends a reducible vertex into a vertex set with the same reducibility as that vertex and creates some weighted packing constraints to narrow the search space. Numerical experiments show that our CITs can help reduction algorithms find much smaller remaining graphs, improve the ability of exact algorithms to find the optimal solutions and help heuristic algorithms produce approximate solutions of better quality. In particular, detailed tests on $12$ representative graphs generated from datasets in Network Data Repository demonstrate that, compared to the state-of-the-art algorithms, the size of remaining graphs is further reduced by more than 32.6%, and the number of solvable instances is increased from 1 to 5.

Cops and Robber is a family of two-player games played on graphs in which one player controls a number of cops and the other player controls a robber. In alternating turns, each player moves (all) their figures. The cops try to capture the robber while the latter tries to flee indefinitely. In this paper we consider a variant of the game played on a planar graph where the robber moves between adjacent vertices while the cops move between adjacent faces. The cops capture the robber if they occupy all incident faces. We prove that a constant number of cops suffices to capture the robber on any planar graph of maximum degree $Δ$ if and only if $Δ\leq 4$.
Generalized Turán problem with bounded matching number
For a graph $T$ and a set of graphs $\mathcal{H}$, let $\mbox{ex}(n,T,\mathcal{H})$ denote the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $n$-vertex $\mathcal{H}$-free graph. Recently, Alon and Frankl~(arXiv2210.15076) determined the exact value of $\mbox{ex}(n,K_2,\{K_{k+1},M_{s+1}\})$, where $K_{k+1}$ and $M_{s+1}$ are complete graph on $k+1$ vertices and matching of size $s+1$, respectively. Soon after, Gerbner~(arXiv2211.03272) continued the study by extending $K_{k+1}$ to general fixed graph $H$. In this paper, we continue the study of the function $\mbox{ex}(n, T,\{H,M_{s+1}\})$ when $T=K_r$ for $r\ge 3$. We determine the exact value of $\mbox{ex}(n,K_r,\{K_{k+1},M_{s+1}\})$ and give the value of $\mbox{ex}(n,K_r,\{H,M_{s+1}\})$ for general $H$ with an error term $O(1)$.
