Preservation of discrete structures. A metric point of view
In the early 80's, Alain Quilliot presented an approach of ordered sets and graphs in terms of metric spaces, where instead of positive real numbers, the values of the distance are elements of an ordered monoid equipped with an involution. This point of view was further developed in a series of papers by Jawhari, Misane, Pouzet, Rosenberg and Kabil. Some results are currently published by Rosenberg, Kabil and Pouzet, Bandelt, Pouzet and Saïdane, Khamsi and Pouzet. Special aspects were developed by the authors of the present paper. A survey on generalized metric spaces is in print. In this paper, we review briefly the salient aspects of the theory of generalized metric spaces, then we illustrate the properties of the preservation, by operations, of sets of relations, notably binary relations, and particularly equivalence relations.

For an odd integer $n=2d-1$, let $\mathcal{B}(n, d)$ be the subgraph of the hypercube $Q_n$ induced by the two largest layers. In this paper, we describe the typical structure of independent sets in $\mathcal{B}(n, d)$ and give precise asymptotics on the number of them. The proofs use Sapozhenko's graph container method and a recently developed method of Jenssen and Perkins, which combines Sapozhenko's graph container lemma with the cluster expansion for polymer models from statistical physics.
Upper Eigenvalue Bounds for the Kirchhoff Laplacian on Embbeded Metric Graphs
We derive upper bounds for the eigenvalues of the Kirchhoff Laplacian on a compact metric graph depending on the graph's genus g. These bounds can be further improved if $g = 0$, i.e. if the metric graph is planar. Our results are based on a spectral correspondence between the Kirchhoff Laplacian and a particular a certain combinatorial weighted Laplacian. In order to take advantage of this correspondence, we also prove new estimates for the eigenvalues of the weighted combinatorial Laplacians that were previously known only in the weighted case.

A bihole in a bipartite graph $G$ with partite sets $A$ and $B$ is an independent set $I$ in $G$ with $|I\cap A|=|I\cap B|$. We prove lower bounds on the largest order of biholes in balanced bipartite graphs subject to conditions involving the vertex degrees and the average degree.

Given a large graph $H$, does the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$ contain a copy of $H$ as an induced subgraph with high probability? This classical question has been studied extensively for various graphs $H$, going back to the study of the independence number of $G(n,p)$ by Erdős and Bollobás, and Matula in 1976. In this paper we prove an asymptotically best possible result for induced matchings by showing that if $C/n\le p \le 0.99$ for some large constant $C$, then $G(n,p)$ contains an induced matching of order approximately $2\log_q(np)$, where $q= \frac{1}{1-p}$.
A System of Billiard and Its Application to Information-Theoretic Entropy

In this article, we define an information-theoretic entropy based on the Ihara zeta function of a graph which is called the Ihara entropy. A dynamical system consists of a billiard ball and a set of reflectors correspond to a combinatorial graph. The reflectors are represented by the vertices of the graph. Movement of the billiard ball between two reflectors is represented by the edges. The prime cycles of this graph generate the bi-infinite sequences of the corresponding symbolic dynamical system. The number of different prime cycles of a given length can be expressed in terms of the adjacency matrix of the oriented line graph. It also constructs the formal power series expansion of Ihara zeta function. Therefore, the Ihara entropy has a deep connection with the dynamical system of billiards. As an information-theoretic entropy, it fulfils the generalized Shannon-Khinchin axioms. It is a weakly decomposable entropy whose composition law is given by the Lazard formal group law.

Motivated by a longstanding conjecture of Thomassen, we study how large the average degree of a graph needs to be to imply that it contains a $C_4$-free subgraph with average degree at least $t$. Kühn and Osthus showed that an average degree bound which is double exponential in t is sufficient. We give a short proof of this bound, before reducing it to a single exponential. That is, we show that any graph $G$ with average degree at least $2^{ct^2\log t}$ (for some constant $c>0$) contains a $C_4$-free subgraph with average degree at least $t$. Finally, we give a construction which improves the lower bound for this problem, showing that this initial average degree must be at least $t^{3-o(1)}$.
Two Results on Layered Pathwidth and Linear Layouts
Layered pathwidth is a new graph parameter studied by Bannister et al (2015). In this paper we present two new results relating layered pathwidth to two types of linear layouts. Our first result shows that, for any graph $G$, the stack number of $G$ is at most four times the layered pathwidth of $G$. Our second result shows that any graph $G$ with track number at most three has layered pathwidth at most four. The first result complements a result of Dujmović and Frati (2018) relating layered treewidth and stack number. The second result solves an open problem posed by Bannister et al (2015).

A universal adjacency matrix of a graph $G$ with adjacency matrix $A$ is any matrix of the form $U = αA + βI + γJ + δD$ with $α\neq 0$, where $I$ is the identity matrix, $J$ is the all-ones matrix and $D$ is the diagonal matrix with the vertex degrees. In the case that $G$ is the disjoint union of regular graphs, we present an expression for the characteristic polynomials of the various universal adjacency matrices in terms of the characteristic polynomials of the adjacency matrices of the components. As a consequence we obtain a formula for the characteristic polynomial of the Seidel matrix of $G$, and the signless Laplacian of the complement of $G$ (i.e. the join of regular graphs).

Dujmović et al (FOCS2019) recently proved that every planar graph $G$ is a subgraph of $H\boxtimes P$, where $\boxtimes$ denotes the strong graph product, $H$ is a graph of treewidth 8 and $P$ is a path. This result has found numerous applications to linear graph layouts, graph colouring, and graph labelling. The proof given by Dujmović et al is based on a similar decomposition of Pilipczuk and Siebertz (SODA2019) which is constructive and leads to an $O(n^2)$ time algorithm for finding $H$ and the mapping from $V(G)$ onto $V(H\boxtimes P)$. In this note, we show that this algorithm can be made to run in $O(n\log n)$ time.
The normalized Laplacians and random walks of the parallel subdivision graphs
The $k$-parallel subdivision graph $S_k(G)$ is generated from $G$ which each edge of $G$ is replaced by $k$ parallel paths of length 2. The $2k$-parallel subdivision graph $S_{2k}(G)$ is constructed from $G$ which each edge of $G$ is replaced by $k$ parallel paths of length 3. In this paper, the normalized Laplacian spectra of $S_k(G)$ and $S_{2k}(G)$ are given. They turn out that the multiplicities of the corresponding eigenvalues are only determined by $k$. As applications, the expected hitting time, the expected commute time and any two-points resistance distance between vertices $i$ and $j$ of $S_k(G)$, the normalized Laplacian spectra of $S_k(G)$ and $S_{2k}(G)$ with $r$ iterations are given. Moreover, the multiplicative degree Kirchhoff index, Kemeny's constant and the number of spanning tress of $S_k(G)$, $S_k^r(G)$, $S_{2k}(G)$ and $S_{2k}^r(G)$ are respectively obtained. Our results have generalized the previous works in Xie et al. and Guo et al. respectively.

Let $G$ be a graph of minimum degree at least $k$ and let $G_p$ be the random subgraph of $G$ obtained by keeping each edge independently with probability $p$. We are interested in the size of the largest complete minor that $G_p$ contains when $p = \frac{1+\varepsilon}{k}$ with $\varepsilon >0$. We show that with high probability $G_p$ contains a complete minor of order $\tildeΩ(\sqrt{k})$, where the $\sim$ hides a polylogarithmic factor. Furthermore, in the case where the order of $G$ is also bounded above by a constant multiple of $k$, we show that this polylogarithmic term can be removed, giving a tight bound.

For a graph $G=(V(G),E(G))$, an Italian dominating function (ID function) of $G$ is a function $f:V(G)\rightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ such that for each vertex $v\in V(G)$ with $f(v)=0$, $f(N(v))\geq2$, that is, either there is a vertex $u \in N(v)$ with $f (u) = 2$ or there are two vertices $x,y\in N(v)$ with $f(x)=f(y)=1$. A function $f:V(G)\rightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ is a covering Italian dominating function (CID function) of $G$ if $f$ is an ID function and $\{v\in V(G)\mid f(v)\neq0\}$ is a vertex cover set. The covering Italian domination number (CID number) $γ_{cI}(G)$ is the minimum weight taken over all CID functions of $G$.
In this paper, we study the CID number in graphs. We show that the problem of computing this parameter is NP-hard even when restricted to some well-known families of graphs, and find some bounds on this parameter. We characterize the family of graphs for which their CID numbers attain the upper bound twice their vertex cover number as well as all claw-free graphs whose CID numbers attain the lower bound half of their orders. We also give the characterizations of some families of graphs with small or large CID numbers.
A Highly Symmetric Hamilton Decomposition for Hypercubes
A Hamilton decomposition of a graph is a partitioning of its edge set into disjoint spanning cycles. The existence of such decompositions is known for all hypercubes of even dimension $2n$. We give a decomposition for the case $n = 2^a3^b$ that is highly symmetric in the sense that every cycle can be derived from every other cycle just by permuting the axes. We conjecture that a similar decomposition exists for every n.
Large induced trees in dense random graphs
Erdős and Palka initiated the study of the maximal size of induced trees in random graphs in 1983. They proved that for every fixed $0<p<1$ the size of a largest induced tree in $G_{n,p}$ is concentrated around $2\log_q (np)$ with high probability, where $q=(1-p)^{-1}$. De la Vega showed concentration around the same value for $p=C/n$ where $C$ is a large constant, and his proof also works for all larger $p$. We show that for any given tree $T$ with bounded maximum degree and of size $(2-o(1))\log_q(np)$, $G_{n,p}$ contains an induced copy of $T$ with high probability for $n^{-1/2}\ln^{10/9}n\leq p\leq 0.99$. This is asymptotically optimal.
Macroscopic network circulation for planar graphs

The analysis of networks, aimed at suitably defined functionality, often focuses on partitions into subnetworks that capture desired features. Chief among the relevant concepts is a 2-partition, that underlies the classical Cheeger inequality, and highlights a constriction (bottleneck) that limits accessibility between the respective parts of the network. In a similar spirit, the purpose of the present work is to introduce a new concept of maximal global circulation and to explore 3-partitions that expose this type of macroscopic feature of networks. Herein, graph circulation is motivated by transportation networks and probabilistic flows (Markov chains) on graphs. Our goal is to quantify the large-scale imbalance of network flows and delineate key parts that mediate such global features. While we introduce and propose these notions in a general setting, in this paper, we only work out the case of planar graphs. We explain that a scalar potential can be identified to encapsulate the concept of circulation, quite similarly as in the case of the curl of planar vector fields. Beyond planar graphs, in the general case, the problem to determine global circulation remains at present a combinatorial problem.

Cameron-Liebler sets of subspaces in projective spaces were studied recently by Blokhuis, De Boeck and D'haeseleer (Des. Codes Cryptogr., 2019). In this paper, we discuss Cameron-Liebler sets in bilinear forms graphs, obtain several equivalent definitions and present some classification results.
Graph polynomials and paintability of plane graphs

There exists a variety of coloring problems for plane graphs, involving vertices, edges, and faces in all possible combinations. For instance, in the \emph{entire coloring} of a plane graph we are to color these three sets so that any pair of adjacent or incident elements get different colors. We study here some problems of this type from algebraic perspective, focusing on the \emph{facial} variant. We obtain several results concerning the \emph{Alon-Tarsi number} of various graphs derived from plane embeddings. This allows for extensions of some previous results for \emph{choosability} of these graphs to the game theoretic variant, know as \emph{paintability}. For instance, we prove that every plane graph is facially entirely \emph{$8$-paintable}, which means (metaphorically) that even a color-blind person can facially color the entire graph form lists of size $8$.
Dilworth's Theorem for Borel Posets
A famous theorem of Dilworth asserts that any finite poset of width $k$ can be decomposed into $k$ chains. We study the following problem: given a Borel poset $P$ of finite width $k$, is it true that it can be decomposed into $k$ Borel chains? We give a positive answer in a special case of Borel posets embeddable into the real line. We also prove a dual theorem for posets whose comparability graphs are locally countable.
Bounds Related to The Edge-List Chromatic and Total Chromatic Numbers of a Simple Graph
We show that for a simple graph $G$, $c'(G)\leqΔ(G)+2$ where $c'(G)$ is the choice index (or edge-list chromatic number) of $G$, and $Δ(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$.
As a simple corollary of this result, we show that the total chromatic number $χ_T(G)$ of a simple graph satisfies the inequality $χ_T(G)\leq\ Δ(G)+4$ and the total choice number $c_T(G)$ also satisfies this inequality.
We also relate these bounds to the Hall index and the Hall condition index of a simple graph, and to the total Hall number and the total Hall condition number of a simple graph.
