On the number of real classes in the finite projective linear and unitary groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that for any $n$ and $q$, the number of real conjugacy classes in $\mathrm{PGL}(n, \mathbb{F}_q)$ is equal to the number of real conjugacy classes of $\mathrm{GL}(n, \mathbb{F}_q)$ which are contained in $\mathrm{SL}(n, \mathbb{F}_q)$, refining a result of Lehrer, and extending the result of Gill and Singh that this holds when $n$ is odd or $q$ is even. Further, we show that this quantity is equal to the number of real conjugacy classes in $\mathrm{PGU}(n, \mathbb{F}_q)$, and equal to the number of real conjugacy classes of $\mathrm{U}(n, \mathbb{F}_q)$ which are contained in $\mathrm{SU}(n, \mathbb{F}_q)$, refining results of Gow and Macdonald. We also give a generating function for this common quantity.

Degenerate Schubert Varieties in Type A
We introduce rectangular elements in the symmetric group. In the framework of PBW degenerations, we show that in type A the degenerate Schubert variety associated to a rectangular element is indeed a Schubert variety in a partial flag variety of the same type with larger rank. Moreover, the degenerate Demazure module associated to a rectangular element is isomorphic to the Demazure module for this particular Schubert variety of larger rank. This generalizes previous results by Cerulli Irelli, Lanini and Littelmann for the PBW degenerate flag variety.

Published in Contributions to Discrete Mathematics, 16(1), 2021 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we provide few results on the group distance magic labeling of lexicographic product and direct product of two graphs. We also prove some necessary conditions for a graph to be group distance magic and provide a characterization for a tree to be group distance magic.

An inversion metric for reduced words
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the graph on reduced words with edges given by the Coxeter relations for the symmetric group. We define a metric on reduced words for a given permutation, analogous to Coxeter length for permutations, for which the graph becomes ranked with unique maximal element. We show this metric extends naturally to balanced tableaux, and use it to recover enumerative results of Edelman and Greene and of Reiner and Roichman.

Distinguishing Numbers and Generalizations
The distinguishing number of a graph was introduced by Albertson and Collins as a measure of the amount of symmetry contained in the graph. Tymoczko extended this definition to faithful group actions on sets; taking the set to be the vertex set of a graph and the group to be the automorphism group of the graph allows one to recover the previous definition. Since then, several authors have studied properties of the distinguishing number as well as extensions of the notion. In this paper, we first answer a few open questions regarding the distinguishing number. Next we turn to generalizations regarding the labeling of Cartesian powers of a set and the different subgroups that can be obtained through labelings. We then introduce a new partially ordered set on partitions that follows naturally from extending the theory of distinguishing numbers to that of distinguishing partitions. Then we investigate the groups obtainable from partitioning Cartesian powers of a set in more detail and show how the original notion of the distinguishing number of a graph can be recovered in this way. Next, we introduce a polynomial and a symmetric function generalization of the distinguishing number. Finally, we present a large number of open questions and problems for further research.
The second eigenvalue of some normal Cayley graphs of high transitive groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Γ$ be a finite group acting transitively on $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$, and let $G=\mathrm{Cay}(Γ,T)$ be a Cayley graph of $Γ$. The graph $G$ is called normal if $T$ is closed under conjugation. In this paper, we obtain an upper bound for the second (largest) eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of the graph $G$ in terms of the second eigenvalues of certain subgraphs of $G$ (see Theorem 2.6). Using this result, we develop a recursive method to determine the second eigenvalues of certain Cayley graphs of $S_n$ and we determine the second eigenvalues of a majority of the connected normal Cayley graphs (and some of their subgraphs) of $S_n$ with $\max_{τ\in T}|\mathrm{supp}(τ)|\leq 5$, where $\mathrm{supp}(τ)$ is the set of points in $[n]$ non-fixed by $τ$.

Root systems in number fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
We classify the types of root systems $R$ in the rings of integers of number fields $K$ such that the Weyl group $W(R)$ lies in the group $\mathcal L(K)$ generated by ${\rm Aut} (K)$ and multiplications by the elements of $K^*$. We also classify the Weyl groups of roots systems of rank $n$ which are isomorphic to a subgroup of $\mathcal L(K)$ for a number field $K$ of degree $n$ over $\mathbb Q$.

Hurwitz Transitivity of Longer Reflection Factorizations in G4 and G5
We prove that the Hurwitz action on reflection factorizations of Coxeter elements is transitive up to certain natural constraints in the complex reflection groups G4 and G5. This affirms a more general conjecture by Lewis and Reiner in these specific cases. The proof uses induction on length of the factorization using the fact that the square of a reflection is also a reflection.

On local matching property in groups and vector space
In this paper, we define locally matchable subsets of a group which is derived from the concept of matchings in groups and used as a tool to give alternative proofs for existing results in matching theory. We also give the linear analogue of local matching property for subspaces in a field extension. Our tools mix additive number theory, combinatorics and algebra.
Spectra of Cayley graphs
Published in Algebra and Logic, 58:4 (2019), 297--305 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a group and $S\subseteq G$ its subset such that $S=S^{-1}$, where $S^{-1}=\{s^{-1}\mid s\in S\}$. Then {\it the Cayley graph ${\rm Cay}(G,S)$} is an undirected graph $Γ$ with the vertex set $V(Γ)=G$ and the edge set $E(Γ)=\{(g,gs)\mid g\in G, s\in S\}$. A graph $Γ$ is said to be {\it integral} if every eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $Γ$ is integer. In the paper, we prove the following theorem: {\it if a subset $S=S^{-1}$ of $G$ is normal and $s\in S\Rightarrow s^k\in S$ for every $k\in \mathbb{Z}$ such that $(k,|s|)=1$, then ${\rm Cay}(G,S)$ is integral.} In particular, {\it if $S\subseteq G$ is a normal set of involutions, then ${\rm Cay}(G,S)$ is integral.} We also use the theorem to prove that {\it if $G=A_n$ and $S=\{(12i)^{\pm1}\mid i=3,\dots,n\}$, then ${\rm Cay}(G,S)$ is integral.} Thus, we give positive solutions for both problems 19.50(a) and 19.50(b) in "Kourovka Notebook".
On the Harborth constant of $C_3 \oplus C_{3n}$
For a finite abelian group $(G,+, 0)$ the Harborth constant $\mathsf{g}(G)$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that each squarefree sequence over $G$ of length $k$, equivalently each subset of $G$ of cardinality at least $k$, has a subsequence of length $\exp(G)$ whose sum is $0$. In this paper, it is established that $\mathsf{g}(G)= 3n + 3$ for prime $n \neq 3$ and $\mathsf{g}(C_3 \oplus C_9)= 13$.

Ergodic Theorems for the Shift Action and Pointwise Versions of The Abért--Weiss Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Γ$ be a countably infinite group. A common theme in ergodic theory is to start with a probability measure-preserving (p.m.p.) action $Γ\curvearrowright (X, μ)$ and a map $f \in L^1(X, μ)$, and to compare the global average $\int f \,\mathrm{d}μ$ of $f$ to the pointwise averages $|D|^{-1} \sum_{δ\in D} f(δ\cdot x)$, where $x \in X$ and $D$ is a nonempty finite subset of $Γ$. The basic hope is that, when $D$ runs over a suitably chosen infinite sequence, these pointwise averages should converge to the global value for $μ$-almost all $x$. In this paper we prove several results that refine the above basic paradigm by uniformly controlling the averages over specific sets $D$ rather than considering their limit as $|D| \to \infty$. Our results include ergodic theorems for the Bernoulli shift action $Γ\curvearrowright ([0;1]^Γ, λ^Γ)$ and strengthenings of the theorem of Abért and Weiss that the shift is weakly contained in every free p.m.p. action of $Γ$. In particular, we establish a purely Borel version of the Abért--Weiss theorem for finitely generated groups of subexponential growth. The central role in our arguments is played by the recently introduced measurable versions of the Lovász Local Lemma, due to the current author and to Csóka, Grabowski, Máthé, Pikhurko, and Tyros.
A Construction of Bent Functions on a finite group

In this paper, we discuss when a class function on a finite group is a bent function. We have found a necessary condition for a class function on a finite abelian group to be bent. Also, we have found a necessary and sufficient condition for a class function on a finite cyclic group to be bent.

Regular self-dual and self-Petrie-dual maps of arbitrary valency
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main result of D. Archdeacon, M. Conder and J. Širáň [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 366 (2014) 8, 4491-4512] implies existence of a regular, self-dual and self-Petrie dual map of any given even valency. In this paper we extend this result to any odd valency $\ge 5$. This is done by algebraic number theory and maps defined on the groups ${\rm PSL}(2,p)$ in the case of odd prime valency $\ge 5$ and valency $9$, and by coverings for the remaining odd valencies.

On the spectral gap of some Cayley graphs on the Weyl group $W(B_n)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Laplacian of a (weighted) Cayley graph on the Weyl group $W(B_n)$ is a $N\times N$ matrix with $N = 2^n n!$ equal to the order of the group. We show that for a class of (weighted) generating sets, its spectral gap (lowest nontrivial eigenvalue), is actually equal to the spectral gap of a $2n \times 2n$ matrix associated to a $2n$-dimensional permutation representation of $W_n$. This result can be viewed as an extension to $W(B_n)$ of an analogous result valid for the symmetric group, known as `Aldous' spectral gap conjecture', proven in 2010 by Caputo, Liggett and Richthammer.
Self-dual, self-Petrie-dual and Möbius regular maps on linear fractional groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Regular maps on linear fractional groups $PSL(2,q)$ and $PGL(2,q$) have been studied for many years and the theory is well-developed, including generating sets for the asscoiated groups. This paper studies the properties of self-duality, self-Petrie-duality and Möbius regularity in this context, providing necessary and sufficient conditions for each case. We also address the special case for regular maps of type (5,5). The final section includes an enumeration of the $PSL(2,q)$ maps for $q\le81$ and a list of all the $PSL(2,q)$ maps which have any of these special properties for $q\le49$.
Permutations with orders coprime to a given integer
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $m$ be a positive integer and let $ρ(m,n)$ be the proportion of permutations of the symmetric group ${\rm Sym}(n)$ whose order is coprime to $m$. In 2002, Pouyanne proved that $ρ(n,m)n^{1-\frac{φ(m)}{m}}\sim κ_m$ where $κ_m$ is a complicated (unbounded) function of $m$. We show that there exists a positive constant $C(m)$ such that, for all $n \geqslant m$, \[C(m) \left(\frac{n}{m}\right)^{\frac{φ(m)}{m}-1} \leqslant ρ(n,m) \leqslant \left(\frac{n}{m}\right)^{\frac{φ(m)}{m}-1}\] where $φ$ is Euler's totient function.

Partial Geometric Designs from Group Actions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, using group actions, we introduce a new method for constructing partial geometric designs (sometimes referred to as $1\frac{1}{2}$-designs). Using this new method, we construct several infinite families of partial geometric designs by investigating the actions of various linear groups of degree two on certain subsets of $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{2}$. Moreover, by computing the stabilizers of such subsets in various linear groups of degree two, we are also able to construct a new infinite family of balanced incomplete block designs.

On compactifications and product-free sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
A subset of a group is said to be product-free if it does not contain three elements satisfying the equation $xy=z$. We give a negative answer to a question of Babai and Sós on the existence of large product-free sets by model theoretic means. This question was originally answered by Gowers. Furthermore, we give a natural and sufficient model theoretic condition for a group to have a large product-free subset, as well as a model theoretic account of a result of Nikolov and Pyber on triple products.

Monochromatic Regular Polygons in finitely colored $\mathbb{Z}_2 *\mathbb{Z}_2 *\mathbb{Z}_2$
We show that for any finite coloring of the group $\mathbb{Z}_2 *\mathbb{Z}_2 *\mathbb{Z}_2$ and for any positive integer $k$, there always exists a monochromatic regular $k$-gon in $\mathbb{Z}_2 *\mathbb{Z}_2 *\mathbb{Z}_2$ with respect to the word length metric induced by the standard generating set; the edge length of which is estimated.
