Combinatorics of Poincaré's and Schröder's equations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the combinatorial properties of the functional equation $φ[h(z)]=h(qz)$ for the conjugation of a formal diffeomorphism $φ$ of $\mathbb{C}$ to its linear part $z\mapsto qz$. This is done by interpreting the functional equation in terms of symmetric functions, and then lifting it to noncommutative symmetric functions. We describe explicitly the expansion of the solution in terms of plane trees and prove that its expression on the ribbon basis has coefficients in ${\mathbb N}[q]$ after clearing the denominators $(q)_n$. We show that the conjugacy equation can be lifted to a quadratic fixed point equation in the free triduplicial algebra on one generator. This can be regarded as a $q$-deformation of the duplicial interpretation of the noncommutative Lagrange inversion formula. Finally, these calculations are interpreted in terms of the group of the operad of Stasheff polytopes, and are related to Ecalle's arborified expansion by means of morphisms between various Hopf algebras of trees.

Tropical surfaces
We present tools and definitions to study abstract tropical manifolds in dimension 2, which we call simply tropical surfaces. This includes explicit descriptions of intersection numbers of 1-cycles, normal bundles to some curves and tropical Chern cycles and numbers. We provide a new method for constructing tropical surfaces, called the tropical sum, similar to the fiber sum of usual manifolds. We prove a tropical adjunction formula for curves in compact tropical surfaces satisfying a local condition, a partial Castelnuovo-Enriques criterion for contracting (-1)-curves, and also invariance of (p, q)-homology and Chow groups under tropical modification. Finally we prove a tropical version of Noether's formula for compact surfaces constructed from tropical toric surfaces by way of summations and tropical modifications.

Kostka multiplicity one for multipartitions
If $[λ(j)]$ is a multipartition of the positive integer $n$ (a sequence of partitions with total size $n$), and $μ$ is a partition of $n$, we study the number $K_{[λ(j)]μ}$ of sequences of semistandard Young tableaux of shape $[λ(j)]$ and total weight $μ$. We show that the numbers $K_{[λ(j)] μ}$ occur naturally as the multiplicities in certain permutation representations of wreath products. The main result is a set of conditions on $[λ(j)]$ and $μ$ which are equivalent to $K_{[λ(j)] μ} = 1$, generalizing a theorem of Berenshteĭn and Zelevinskiĭ. We also show that the questions of whether $K_{[λ(j)] μ} > 0$ or $K_{[λ(j)] μ} = 1$ can be answered in polynomial time, expanding on a result of Narayanan. Finally, we give an application to multiplicities in the degenerate Gel'fand-Graev representations of the finite general linear group, and we show that the problem of determining whether a given irreducible representation of the finite general linear group appears with nonzero multiplicity in a given degenerate Gel'fand-Graev representation, with their partition parameters as input, is $NP$-complete.

Impartial avoidance games for generating finite groups
Published in North-W. Eur. J. of Math. 2, 83-101, 2016 • Search Publication
We study an impartial avoidance game introduced by Anderson and Harary. The game is played by two players who alternately select previously unselected elements of a finite group. The first player who cannot select an element without making the set of jointly-selected elements into a generating set for the group loses the game. We develop criteria on the maximal subgroups that determine the nim-numbers of these games and use our criteria to study our game for several families of groups, including nilpotent, sporadic, and symmetric groups.

Jordan-like characterization of automorphism groups of planar graphs
We investigate automorphism groups of planar graphs. The main result is a complete recursive description of all abstract groups that can be realized as automorphism groups of planar graphs. The characterization is formulated in terms of inhomogeneous wreath products. In the proof, we combine techniques from combinatorics, group theory, and geometry. This significantly improves the Babai's description (1975).

A summation formula for Macdonald polynomials
Published in Letters in Mathematical Physics 106 (2016), 381--394 • View PublicationBIB
We derive an explicit sum formula for symmetric Macdonald polynomials. Our expression contains multiple sums over the symmetric group and uses the action of Hecke generators on the ring of polynomials. In the special cases $t=1$ and $q=0$, we recover known expressions for the monomial symmetric and Hall-Littlewood polynomials, respectively. Other specializations of our formula give new expressions for the Jack and $q$-Whittaker polynomials.
Simplicial and Cellular Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Much information about a graph can be obtained by studying its spanning trees. On the other hand, a graph can be regarded as a 1-dimensional cell complex, raising the question of developing a theory of trees in higher dimension. As observed first by Bolker, Kalai and Adin, and more recently by numerous authors, the fundamental topological properties of a tree --- namely acyclicity and connectedness --- can be generalized to arbitrary dimension as the vanishing of certain cellular homology groups. This point of view is consistent with the matroid-theoretic approach to graphs, and yields higher-dimensional analogues of classical enumerative results including Cayley's formula and the matrix-tree theorem. A subtlety of the higher-dimensional case is that enumeration must account for the possibility of torsion homology in trees, which is always trivial for graphs. Cellular trees are the starting point for further high-dimensional extensions of concepts from algebraic graph theory including the critical group, cut and flow spaces, and discrete dynamical systems such as the abelian sandpile model.

Asymptotics of Jack characters
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 166 (2019) 91-143 • View PublicationBIB
Jack characters are a one-parameter deformation of the characters of the symmetric groups; a deformation given by the coefficients in the expansion of Jack symmetric functions in the basis of power-sum symmetric functions. We study Jack characters from the viewpoint of the asymptotic representation theory. In particular, we give explicit formulas for their asymptotically top-degree part, in terms of bicolored oriented maps with an arbitrary face structure. We also study their multiplicative structure and their structure constants and we prove that they fulfill approximate factorization property, a convenient tool for proving Gaussianity of fluctuations of random Young diagrams.

Bias and dessins
Grothendieck's theory of dessins provides a bridge between algebraic numbers and combinatorics. This paper adds a new concept, called 'bias', to the bridge. This produces: (i) from a biased plane tree the construction of a sequence of algebraic numbers, and (ii) a Galois invariant lattice structure on the set of biased dessins. Bias brings these benefits by (i) using individual polynomials instead of equivalence classes of polynomials, and (ii) applying properties of covering spaces and the fundamental group. The new features give new opportunities. At the 2014 SIGMAP conference the author spoke [1] on 'The decorated lattice of biased dessins'. This decorated lattice $\mathcal{L}$ is combinatorially defined, and its automorphism group contains the absolute Galois group $Γ$, perhaps as an index 6 subgroup. This paper defines new families of invariants of dessins, although they require further work to be understood and useful. For this, $\mathcal{L}$ is vital. This paper relies on the the existing, unbiased, theory. Also, it only sketches the construction of $\mathcal{L}$. In [2], [3] the author will remove this dependency, develop the biased theory further, with a focus on $Γ$, and make the theory more accessible.

Fattening up Warning's Second Theorem
We present a generalization of Warning's Second Theorem to polynomial systems over a finite local principal ring with suitably restricted input and output variables. This generalizes a recent result with Forrow and Schmitt (and gives a new proof of that result). Applications to additive group theory, graph theory and polynomial interpolation are pursued in detail.

Cayley graphs of diameter two from difference sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $C(d,k)$ and $AC(d,k)$ be the largest order of a Cayley graph and a Cayley graph based on an abelian group, respectively, of degree $d$ and diameter $k$. When $k=2$, it is well-known that $C(d,2)\le d^2+1$ with equality if and only if the graph is a Moore graph. In the abelian case, we have $AC(d,2)\le \frac{d^2}{2}+d+1$. The best currently lower bound on $AC(d,2)$ is $\frac{3}{8}d^2-1.45 d^{1.525}$ for all sufficiently large $d$. In this paper, we consider the construction of large graphs of diameter $2$ using generalized difference sets. We show that $AC(d,2)\ge \frac{25}{64}d^2-2.1 d^{1.525}$ for sufficiently large $d$ and $AC(d,2) \ge \frac{4}{9}d^2$ if $d=3q$, $q=2^m$ and $m$ is odd.

A Characterization of class groups via sets of lengths {II}
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $H$ be a Krull monoid with finite class group $G$ and suppose that every class contains a prime divisor. If an element $a \in H$ has a factorization $a=u_1 \cdot \ldots \cdot u_k$ into irreducible elements $u_1, \ldots, u_k \in H$, then $k$ is called the length of the factorization and the set $\mathsf L (a)$ of all possible factorization lengths is the set of lengths of $a$. It is classical that the system $\mathcal L (H) = \{ \mathsf L (a) \mid a \in H \}$ of all sets of lengths depends only on the class group $G$, and a standing conjecture states that conversely the system $\mathcal L (H)$ is characteristic for the class group. We verify the conjecture if the class group is isomorphic to $C_n^r$ with $r,n \ge 2$ and $r \le \max \{2, (n+2)/6\}$. Indeed, let $H'$ be a further Krull monoid with class group $G'$ such that every class contains a prime divisor and suppose that $\mathcal L (H)= \mathcal L (H')$. We prove that, if one of the groups $G$ and $G'$ is isomorphic to $C_n^r$ with $r,n$ as above, then $G$ and $G'$ are isomorphic (apart from two well-known pairings).

Permutations destroying arithmetic progressions in finite cyclic groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
A permutation πof an abelian group G is said to destroy arithmetic progressions (APs) if, whenever (a,b,c) is a non-trivial 3-term AP in G, that is c-b=b-a and a,b,c are not all equal, then (π(a),π(b),π(c)) is not an AP. In a paper from 2004, the first author conjectured that such a permutation exists of Z/nZ, for all n except 2,3,5 and 7. Here we prove, as a special case of a more general result, that such a permutation exists for all n >= n_0, for some explcitly constructed number n_0 \approx 1.4 x 10^{14}. We also construct such a permutation of Z/pZ for all primes p > 3 such that p = 3 (mod 8).

Higher Bruhat Orders in Type B
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the geometry of certain hyperplane arrangements, Manin and Schechtman defined for each positive integer n a hierarchy of finite partially ordered sets B(n, k), indexed by positive integers k, called the higher Bruhat orders. The poset B(n, 1) is naturally identified with the weak left Bruhat order on the symmetric group S_n, each B(n, k) has a unique maximal and a unique minimal element, and the poset B(n, k + 1) can be constructed from the set of maximal chains in B(n, k). Elias has demonstrated a striking connection between the posets B(n, k) for k = 2 and the diagrammatics of Bott-Samelson bimodules in type A, providing significant motivation for the development of an analogous theory of higher Bruhat orders in other Cartan-Killing types, particularly for k = 2. In this paper we present a partial generalization to type B, complete up to k = 2, prove a direct analogue of the main theorem of Manin and Schechtman, and relate our construction to the weak Bruhat order and reduced expression graph for Weyl groups of type B.

Large circulant graphs of fixed diameter and arbitrary degree
Published in Ars Mathematica Contemporanea, Vol. 13 No. 2 (2017), pp. 275--291 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the degree-diameter problem for undirected and directed circulant graphs. To date, attempts to generate families of large circulant graphs of arbitrary degree for a given diameter have concentrated mainly on the diameter 2 case. We present a direct product construction yielding improved bounds for small diameters and introduce a new general technique for "stitching" together circulant graphs which enables us to improve the current best known asymptotic orders for every diameter. As an application, we use our constructions in the directed case to obtain upper bounds on the minimum size of a subset $A$ of a cyclic group of order $n$ such that the $k$-fold sumset $kA$ is equal to the whole group. We also present a revised table of largest known circulant graphs of small degree and diameter.

Automorphism Groups of Comparability Graphs
Comparability graphs are graphs which have transitive orientations. The dimension of a poset is the least number of linear orders whose intersection gives this poset. The dimension ${\rm dim}(X)$ of a comparability graph $X$ is the dimension of any transitive orientation of X, and by $k$-DIM we denote the class of comparability graphs $X$ with ${\rm dim}(X) \le k$. It is known that the complements of comparability graphs are exactly function graphs and permutation graphs equal 2-DIM. In this paper, we characterize the automorphism groups of permutation graphs similarly to Jordan's characterization for trees (1869). For permutation graphs, there is an extra operation, so there are some extra groups not realized by trees. For $k \ge 4$, we show that every finite group can be realized as the automorphism group of some graph in $k$-DIM, and testing graph isomorphism for $k$-DIM is GI-complete.

Rainbow connectivity of the non-commuting graph of a finite group
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a finite non-abelian group. The non-commuting graph $Γ_G$ of $G$ has the vertex set $G\setminus Z(G)$ and two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if $xy\ne yx$, where $Z(G)$ is the center of $G$. We prove that the rainbow $2$-connectivity of $Γ_G$ is $2$. In particular, the rainbow connection number of $Γ_G$ is $2$. Moreover, for any positive integer $k$, we prove that there exist infinitely many non-abelian groups $G$ such that the rainbow $k$-connectivity of $Γ_G$ is $2$.

We define Bush-type generalized Hadamard matrices over abelian groups and construct symmetric Bush-type generalized Hadamard matrices over the additive group of finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, $q$ a prime power. We then show and study an association scheme obtained from such generalized Hadamard matrices.
