Subalgebras of the Fomin-Kirillov algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Fomin-Kirillov algebra $\mathcal E_n$ is a noncommutative quadratic algebra with a generator for every edge of the complete graph on $n$ vertices. For any graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, we define $\mathcal E_G$ to be the subalgebra of $\mathcal E_n$ generated by the edges of $G$. We show that these algebras have many parallels with Coxeter groups and their nil-Coxeter algebras: for instance, $\mathcal E_G$ is a free $\mathcal E_H$-module for any $H\subseteq G$, and if $\mathcal E_G$ is finite-dimensional, then its Hilbert series has symmetric coefficients. We determine explicit monomial bases and Hilbert series for $\mathcal E_G$ when $G$ is a simply-laced finite Dynkin diagram or a cycle, in particular showing that $\mathcal E_G$ is finite-dimensional in these cases. We also present conjectures for the Hilbert series of $\mathcal E_{\tilde{D}_n}$, $\mathcal E_{\tilde{E}_6}$, and $\mathcal E_{\tilde{E}_7}$, as well as for which graphs $G$ on six vertices $\mathcal E_G$ is finite-dimensional.

Standard and Weierstrass spin groups on hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces
We show that at any standard or Weierstrass point P on a hyperelliptic Riemann surface S equipped with a nonsingular even spin structure, we may attach a spin group G(P) in a natural way. All such spin groups are isomorphic to each other and to the alternating group A(g)<S(g). Moreover, for any two vertices of the same spin graph we construct a natural, unique isomorphism between the corresponding, mutually conjugate spin groups.

Exceptional Spin groups on hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces
We find all exceptional spin groups attached to the vertices of any exceptional spin graph on any hyperbolic Riemann surface S of genus g>1. In particular, we show that when the order r of a graph is r>2 (i.e.the genus of S must be g>3) then the spin group attached to an exceptional point Q is either isomorphic to the symmetry group S(r) (when the degree of Q is equal to r) or to the symmetry group S(r+1)(when the degree of Q is equal to r+1).

Chromatic Bounds On Orbital Chromatic Roots
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a group $G$ of automorphisms of a graph $Γ$, the orbital chromatic polynomial $OP_{Γ,G}(x)$ is the polynomial whose value at a positive integer $k$ is the number of orbits of $G$ on proper $k$-colorings of $Γ.$ In \cite{Cameron}, Cameron et. al. explore the roots of orbital chromatic polynomials, and in particular prove that orbital chromatic roots are dense in $\mathbb{R}$, extending Thomassen's famous result (see \cite{Thomassen}) that chromatic roots are dense in $[\frac{32}{27},\infty)$. Cameron et al \cite{Cameron} further conjectured that the real roots of the orbital chromatic polynomial of any graph are bounded above by the largest real root of its chromatic polynomial. We resolve this conjecture in the negative, and provide a process for generating families of counterexamples. We additionally show that the answer is true for various classes of graphs, including many outerplanar graphs.
On a canonical construction of tesselated surfaces via finite group theory, Part I
This paper is the first part in a 2 part study of an elementary functorial construction from the category of finite non-abelian groups to a category of singular compact, oriented 2-manifolds. After a desingularization process this construction results in a collection of compact, connected, oriented tesselated smooth surfaces equipped with a closed-cell structure which is face and edge transitive and which has at most 2 orbits of vertices. These tesselated surfaces can also be viewed as abstract 3-polytopes (or as graph embeddings in the corresponding surface) which are either equivar or dual to abstract quasiregular polytopes. This construction generally results in a large collection of tesselated surfaces per group, for example when the construction is applied to Σ_6 it yields 4477 tesselated surfaces of 27 distinct genus and even more varieties of tesselation cell structure. We study the distribution of these surfaces in various groups and some interesting resulting tesselations. In a second paper, we show that extensions of groups result in branched coverings between the component surfaces in their decompositions. We also exploit functoriality to obtain interesting faithful, orientation preserving actions of subquotients of these groups and their automorphism groups on these surfaces and in the corresponding mapping class groups.

On a canonical construction of tesselated surfaces via finite group theory, Part II

This paper is the second part of a two-part study of an elementary functorial construction of tesselated surfaces from finite groups. This elementary construction was discussed in the first part and generally results in a large collection of tesselated surfaces per group, for example when the construction is applied to Σ_6 it yields 4477 tesselated surfaces of 27 distinct genus and even more varieties of tesselation cell structure. These tesselations are face and edge transitive and consist of closed cell structures. In this paper, we continue to study the distribution of these surfaces in various groups and some interesting resulting tesselations with the aid of computer computations. We also show that extensions of groups result in branched coverings between the component surfaces in their decompositions. Finally we exploit functoriality to obtain interesting faithful, orientation preserving actions of subquotients of these groups and their automorphism groups on these surfaces and in the corresponding mapping class groups.

The sandpile groups of graphs of classes CH_n (a_1, ..., a_n)
The article considers the procedure of connection of graphs to the edges of a cyclic graph and its influence on the sandpile group of the graph thus obtained. A series of classes of graphs CH_n(a_1,...,a_n) is defined. Recurrent and non-recurrent formulas for calculating the sandpile groups of all graphs of classes CH_n (a_1, ..., a_n) are proposed.
The sharp threshold for maximum-size sum-free subsets in even-order abelian groups
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 24 (2015) 609-640 • View PublicationBIB
We study sum-free sets in sparse random subsets of even order abelian groups. In particular, we determine the sharp threshold for the following property: the largest such set is contained in some maximum-size sum-free subset of the group. This theorem extends recent work of Balogh, Morris and Samotij, who resolved the case G = Z_{2n}, and who obtained a weaker threshold (up to a constant factor) in general.

On algebraic fusions of association schemes
We give a complete description of the irreducible representations of algebraic fusions of association schemes, in terms of the irreducible representations of a Schur cover of the corresponding group of algebraic automorphisms.

The Automorphism Group of a Self Dual Binary [72,36,16] Code Does Not Contain Z4
Published in IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 60, no. 6, pp. 3302-3307, June 2014 • View PublicationBIB
It has been proven in a series of works that the order of the automorphism group of a binary [72,36,16] code does not exceed five. We obtain a parametrization of all self-dual binary codes of length 72 with automorphism of order 4 which can be extremal. We use extensive computations in MAGMA and on a supercomputer to show that an extremal binary code of length 72 does not have an element of order 4.

An Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for the derangement graph of PGL(3,q) acting on the projective plane
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we prove an Erdős-Ko-Rado-type theorem for intersecting sets of permutations. We show that an intersecting set of maximal size in the projective general linear group PGL(3,q), in its natural action on the points of the projective line, is either a coset of the stabilizer of a point or a coset of the stabilizer of a line.

On inductively free Restrictions of Reflection Arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let W be a finite complex reflection group acting on the complex vector space V and let A(W) = (A(W), V) be the associated reflection arrangement. In an earlier paper by the last two authros, we classified all inductively free reflection arrangements A(W). The aim of this note is to extend this work by determining all inductively free restrictions of reflection arrangements.

On strong homotopy for quasi-schemoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
A quasi-schemoid is a small category with a particular partition of the set of morphisms. We define a homotopy relation on the category of quasi-schemoids and study its fundamental properties. As a homotopy invariant, the homotopy set of self-homotopy equivalences on a quasi-schemoid is introduced. The main theorem enables us to deduce that the homotopy invariant for the quasi-schemoid induced by a finite group is isomorphic to the automorphism group of the given group.

Selective and Ramsey ultrafilters on $G$-spaces
Published in Notre Dame J. Formal Logic 58, no. 3 (2017), 453-459 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a group, $X$ be an infinite transitive $G$-space. A free ultrafilter $\UU$ on $X$ is called $G$-selective if, for any $G$-invariant partition $\PP$ of $X$, either one cell of $\PP$ is a member of $\UU$, or there is a member of $\UU$ which meets each cell of $\PP$ in at most one point. We show (Theorem 1) that in ZFC with no additional set-theoretical assumptions there exists a $G$-selective ultrafilter on $X$, describe all $G$-spaces $X$ (Theorem 2) such that each free ultrafilter on $X$ is $G$-selective, and prove (Theorem 3) that a free ultrafilter $\UU$ on $ω$ is selective if and only if $\UU$ is $G$-selective with respect to the action of any countable group $G$ of permutations of $ω$. A free ultrafilter $\UU$ on $X$ is called $G$-Ramsey if, for any $G$-invariant coloring $χ:[G]^2 \to \{0,1\}$, there is $U\in \UU$ such that $[U]^2$ is $χ$-monochrome. By Theorem 4, each $G$-Ramsey ultrafilter on $X$ is $G$-selective. Theorems 5 and 6 give us a plenty of $\mathbb{Z}$-selective ultrafilters on $\mathbb{Z}$ (as a regular $\mathbb{Z}$-space) but not $\mathbb{Z}$-Ramsey. We conjecture that each $\mathbb{Z}$-Ramsey ultrafilter is selective.

A categorification of non-crossing partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a categorification of the non-crossing partitions given by crystallographic Coxeter groups. This involves a category of certain bilinear lattices, which are essentially determined by a symmetrisable generalised Cartan matrix together with a particular choice of a Coxeter element. Examples arise from Grothendieck groups of hereditary artin algebras.

Geodesic Rosen continued fractions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe how to represent Rosen continued fractions by paths in a class of graphs that arise naturally in hyperbolic geometry. This representation gives insight into Rosen's original work about words in Hecke groups, and it also helps us to identify Rosen continued fraction expansions of shortest length.

On the Erdos-Ko-Rado property for finite Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let a finite group $G$ act transitively on a finite set $X$. A subset $S\subseteq G$ is said to be {\it intersecting} if for any $s_1,s_2\in S$, the element $s_1^{-1}s_2$ has a fixed point. The action is said to have the {\it weak Erdős-Ko-Rado} property, if the cardinality of any intersecting set is at most $|G|/|X|$. If, moreover, any maximal intersecting set is a coset of a point stabilizer, the action is said to have the {\it strong Erdős-Ko-Rado} property. In this paper we will investigate the weak and strong Erdős-Ko-Rado property and attempt to classify the groups whose all transitive actions have these properties. In particular, we show that a group with the weak Erdős-Ko-Rado property is solvable and that a nilpotent group with the strong Erdős-Ko-Rado property is product of a $2$-group and an abelian group of odd order.

On some generalization of the Möbius configuration
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Möbius $(8_4)$ configuration is generalized in a purely combinatorial approach. We consider $(2n_n)$ configurations ${\goth M}_{(n,\varphi)}$ depending on a permutation $\varphi$ in the symmetric group $S_n$. Classes of non-isomorphic configurations of this type are determined. The parametric characterization of ${\goth M}_{(n,\varphi)}$ is given. The uniqueness of the decomposition of ${\goth M}_{(n,\varphi)}$ into two mutually inscribed $n$-simplices is discussed. The automorphisms of ${\goth M}_{(n,\varphi)}$ are characterized for $n\geq 3$.

Automorphisms of Cayley graphs on generalised dicyclic groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph is called a GRR if its automorphism group acts regularly on its vertex-set. Such a graph is necessarily a Cayley graph. Godsil has shown that there are only two infinite families of finite groups that do not admit GRRs : abelian groups and generalised dicyclic groups. Indeed, any Cayley graph on such a group admits specific additional graph automorphisms that depend only on the group. Recently, Dobson and the last two authors showed that almost all Cayley graphs on abelian groups admit no automorphisms other than these obvious necessary ones. In this paper, we prove the analogous result for Cayley graphs on the remaining family of exceptional groups: generalised dicyclic groups.

Combinatorial properties of Temperley Lieb algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider two families of polynomials that play the same role in the Temperley Lieb algebra of a Coxeter group as the Kazhdan Lusztig and R polynomials play in the Hecke algebra of the group. We study these polynomials from a combinatorial point of view. More precisely we obtain recursions, non recursive formulas, symmetry properties, and expressions for the constant terms, of these polynomials.
