Permutation polynomials on F_q induced from bijective Redei functions on subgroups of the multiplicative group of F_q
We construct classes of permutation polynomials over F_{Q^2} by exhibiting classes of low-degree rational functions over F_{Q^2} which induce bijections on the set of (Q+1)-th roots of unity in F_{Q^2}. As a consequence, we prove two conjectures about permutation trinomials from a recent paper by Tu, Zeng, Hu and Li.

Order polynomials and Pólya's enumeration theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Pólya's enumeration theorem is concerned with counting labeled sets up to symmetry. Given a finite group acting on a finite set of labeled elements it states that the number of labeled sets up to symmetry is given by a polynomial in the number of labels. We give a new perspective on this theorem by generalizing it to partially ordered sets and order preserving maps. Further we prove a reciprocity statement in terms of strictly order preserving maps generalizing a classical result by Stanley (1970). We apply our results to counting graph colorings up to symmetry.

An analogue of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence and non-symmetric Cauchy kernels for truncated staircases
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a restriction of an analogue of the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence for semi-skyline augmented fillings, due to Mason, to multisets of cells of a staircase possibly truncated by a smaller staircase at the upper left end corner, or at the bottom right end corner. The restriction to be imposed on the pairs of semi-skyline augmented fillings is that the pair of shapes, rearrangements of each other, satisfies an inequality in the Bruhat order, w.r.t. the symmetric group, where one shape is bounded by the reverse of the other. For semi-standard Young tableaux the inequality means that the pair of their right keys is such that one key is bounded by the Schützenberger evacuation of the other. This bijection is then used to obtain %recover an expansion formula of the non-symmetric Cauchy kernel, over staircases or truncated staircases, in the basis of Demazure characters of type $A$, and the basis of Demazure atoms. The expansion implies Lascoux expansion formula, when specialised to staircases or truncated staircases, and make explicit, in the latter, the Young tableaux in the Demazure crystal by interpreting Demazure operators via elementary bubble sorting operators acting on weak compositions.

Edgewise subdivisions, local $h$-polynomials and excedances in the wreath product $\ZZ_r \wr \mathfrak{S}_n$
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 28 (2014), no. 3, 1479-1492 • View PublicationBIB
The coefficients of the local $h$-polynomial of the barycentric subdivision of the simplex with $n$ vertices are known to count derangements in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ by the number of excedances. A generalization of this interpretation is given for the local $h$-polynomial of the $r$th edgewise subdivision of the barycentric subdivision of the simplex. This polynomial is shown to be $γ$-nonnegative and a combinatorial interpretation to the corresponding $γ$-coefficients is provided. The new combinatorial interpretations involve the notions of flag excedance and descent in the wreath product $\ZZ_r \wr \mathfrak{S}_n$. A related result on the derangement polynomial for $\ZZ_r \wr \mathfrak{S}_n$, studied by Chow and Mansour, is also derived from results of Linusson, Shareshian and Wachs on the homology of Rees products of posets.

Quantum cluster algebra structures on quantum nilpotent algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
All algebras in a very large, axiomatically defined class of quantum nilpotent algebras are proved to possess quantum cluster algebra structures under mild conditions. Furthermore, it is shown that these quantum cluster algebras always equal the corresponding upper quantum cluster algebras. Previous approaches to these problems for the construction of (quantum) cluster algebra structures on (quantized) coordinate rings arising in Lie theory were done on a case by case basis relying on the combinatorics of each concrete family. The results of the paper have a broad range of applications to these problems, including the construction of quantum cluster algebra structures on quantum unipotent groups and quantum double Bruhat cells (the Berenstein-Zelevinsky conjecture), and treat these problems from a unified perspective. All such applications also establish equality between the constructed quantum cluster algebras and their upper counterparts. The proofs rely on Chatters' notion of noncommutative unique factorization domains. Toric frames are constructed by considering sequences of homogeneous prime elements of chains of noncommutative UFDs (a generalization of the construction of Gelfand-Tsetlin subalgebras) and mutations are obtained by altering chains of noncommutative UFDs. Along the way, an intricate (and unified) combinatorial model for the homogeneous prime elements in chains of noncommutative UFDs and their alterations is developed. When applied to special families, this recovers the combinatorics of Weyl groups and double Weyl groups previously used in the construction and categorification of cluster algebras. It is expected that this combinatorial model of sequences of homogeneous prime elements will have applications to the unified categorification of quantum nilpotent algebras.

On π-surfaces of four-dimensional parallelohedra
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 21:4 (2017), 551-572 • View PublicationBIB
We show that every four-dimensional parallelohedron P satisfies a recently found condition of Garber, Gavrilyuk & Magazinov sufficient for the Voronoi conjecture being true for P. Namely we show that for every four-dimensional parallelohedron P the group of rational first homologies of its π-surface is generated by half-belt cycles.

Invariants for critical dimension groups and permutation-Hermite equivalence
Motivated by classification, up to order isomorphism, of some dense subgroups of Euclidean space that are free of minimal rank, we obtain apparently new invariants for an equivalence relation (intermediate between Hermite and Smith) on integer matrices. These then participate in the classification of the dense subgroups. The same equivalence relation has appeared before, in the classification of lattice simplices. We discuss this equivalence relation (called {\it permutation-Hermite}), obtain fairly fine invariants for it, and have density results, and some formulas counting the numbers of equivalence classes for fixed determinant.

Group distance magic and antimagic graphs
Published in Acta Math. Sin. (Engl. Ser.) 32 (2016) 1159-1176 • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and an Abelian group $A$ of order $n$, an $A$-distance antimagic labelling of $G$ is a bijection from $V(G)$ to $A$ such that the vertices of $G$ have pairwise distinct weights, where the weight of a vertex is the sum (under the operation of $A$) of the labels assigned to its neighbours. An {$A$-distance magic labelling} of $G$ is a bijection from $V(G)$ to $A$ such that the weights of all vertices of $G$ are equal to the same element of $A$. In this paper we study these new labellings under a general setting with a focus on product graphs. We prove among other things several general results on group antimagic or magic labellings for Cartesian, direct and strong products of graphs. As applications we obtain several families of graphs admitting group distance antimagic or magic labellings with respect to elementary Abelian groups, cyclic groups or direct products of such groups.

Dyck tilings and the homogeneous Garnir relations for graded Specht modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
Suppose $λ$ and $μ$ are integer partitions with $λ\supseteqμ$. Kenyon and Wilson have introduced the notion of a cover-inclusive Dyck tiling of the skew Young diagram $λ\setminusμ$, which has applications in the study of double-dimer models. We examine these tilings in more detail, giving various equivalent conditions and then proving a recurrence which we use to show that the entries of the transition matrix between two bases for a certain permutation module for the symmetric group are given by counting cover-inclusive Dyck tilings. We go on to consider the inverse of this matrix, showing that its entries are determined by what we call cover-expansive Dyck tilings. The fact that these two matrices are mutual inverses allows us to recover the main result of Kenyon and Wilson. We then discuss the connections with recent results of Kim et al, who give, a simple expression for the sum, over all $μ$, of the number of cover-inclusive Dyck tilings of $λ\setminusμ$. Our results provide a new proof of this result. Finally, we show how to use our results to obtain simpler expressions for the homogeneous Garnir relations for the universal Specht modules introduced by Kleshchev, Mathas and Ram for the cyclotomic quiver Hecke algebras.

Labelled seeds and the mutation group
Published in Math. Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 163 (2017), no. 2, 193-217 • View PublicationBIB
We study the set S of labelled seeds of a cluster algebra of rank n inside a field F as a homogeneous space for the group M_n of (globally defined) mutations and relabellings. Regular equivalence relations on S are associated to subgroups W of Aut_{M_n}(S), and we thus obtain groupoids W \ S. We show that for two natural choices of equivalence relation, the corresponding groups W^c and W^+ act on F, and the groupoids W^c \ S and W^+ \ S on the model field K=Q(x_1,...,x_n). The groupoid W^+ \ S is equivalent to Fock-Goncharov's cluster modular groupoid. Moreover, W^c is isomorphic to the group of cluster automorphisms, and W^+ to the subgroup of direct cluster automorphisms, in the sense of Assem-Schiffler-Shramchenko. We also prove that, for mutation classes whose seeds have mutation finite quivers, the stabilizer of a labelled seed under M_n determines the quiver of the seed up to 'similarity', meaning up to taking opposites of some of the connected components. Consequently, the subgroup W^c is the entire automorphism group of S in these cases.

Lower bound in the Roth theorem for amenable groups
Published in Ergod. Th. Dynam. Sys. 35 (2014) 1746-1766 • View PublicationBIB
Let $T_1$, $T_2$ be two commuting probability measure-preserving actions of a countable amenable group such that the group spanned by these actions acts ergodically. We show that $μ(A\cap T_1^g A\cap T_1^g T_2^g A) > μ(A)^4-ε$ on a syndetic set for any measurable set $A$ and any $ε>0$. The proof uses the concept of a sated system introduced by Austin.

Combinatorial categories and permutation groups

The regular objects in various categories, such as maps, hypermaps or covering spaces, can be identified with the normal subgroups N of a given group Γ, with quotient group isomorphic to Γ/N. It is shown how to enumerate such objects with a given finite automorphism group G, how to represent them all as quotients of a single regular object U(G), and how they are acted on by the outer automorphism group of Γ. Examples constructed include kaleidoscopic maps with trinity symmetry.
The Catalan simplicial set
Published in Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc. 158(2):211-222, 2015 • View PublicationBIB
The Catalan numbers are well-known to be the answer to many different counting problems, and so there are many different families of sets whose cardinalities are the Catalan numbers. We show how such a family can be given the structure of a simplicial set. We show how the low-dimensional parts of this simplicial set classify, in a precise sense, the structures of monoid and of monoidal category. This involves aspects of combinatorics, algebraic topology, quantum groups, logic, and category theory.

Almost Commutative Probability Theory
We solve two longstanding major problems in Free Probability. This is achieved by generalising the theory to one with values in arbitrary commutative algebras. We prove the existence of the multi-variable $S$-transform, and show that it is naturally realised as a faithful linear representation. Further, we prove that in dimension one, the analog of the classical relation between addition and multiplication of independent random variables holds for free random variables, if the co-domain is an algebra over the rationals. In this case the multiplicative problem can be reduced to the additive one, which is not true in dimensions greater than one. Finally, we classify the groups which arise as joint distributions of $n$-tuples of non-commutative random variables, endowed with the free convolution product, which is the binary operation that encodes the multiplication of free $n$-tuples.

On some colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions
Recently, Hyatt introduced some colored Eulerian quasisymmetric function to study the joint distribution of excedance number and major index on colored permutation groups. We show how Hyatt's generating function formula for the fixed point colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions can be deduced from the Decrease value theorem of Foata and Han. Using this generating function formula, we prove two symmetric function generalizations of the Chung-Graham-Knuth symmetrical Eulerian identity for some flag Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which are specialized to the flag excedance numbers. Combinatorial proofs of those symmetrical identities are also constructed. We also study some other properties of the flag Eulerian quasisymmetric functions. In particular, we confirm a recent conjecture of Mongelli [Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 120 (2013) 1216--1234] about the unimodality of the generating function of the flag excedances over the type B derangements. Moreover, colored versions of the hook factorization and admissible inversions of permutations are found, as well as a new recurrence formula for the $(\maj-\exc,\fexc)$-$q$-Eulerian polynomials. We introduce a colored analog of Rawlings major index on colored permutations and obtain an interpretation of the colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions as sums of some fundamental quasisymmetric functions related with them, by applying Stanley's $P$-partition theory and a decomposition of the Chromatic quasisymmetric functions due to Shareshian and Wachs.

On a Theorem of Deshouillers and Freiman
Published • View PublicationBIB
The study of `structure' on subsets of abelian groups, with small `doubling constant', has been well studied in the last fifty years, from the time Freiman initiated the subject. In \cite{DF} Deshouillers and Freiman establish a structure theorem for subsets of $\n$ with small doubling constant. In the current article we provide an alternate proof of one of the main theorem of \cite{DF}. Also our proof leads to slight improvement of the theorems in \cite{DF}.

Remarks on the tensor degree of finite groups
Published in Filomat 28 (2014), 1929--1933 • View PublicationBIB
The present paper is a note on the tensor degree of finite groups, introduced recently in literature. This numerical invariant generalizes the commutativity degree through the notion of nonabelian tensor square. We show two inequalities, which correlate the tensor and the commutativity degree of finite groups, and, indirectly, structural properties will be discussed.

The sum-capture problem for abelian groups
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group, let $0 < α< 1$, and let $A \subseteq G$ be a random set of size $|G|^α$. We let $$ μ(A) = \max_{B,C:|B|=|C|=|A|}|\{(a,b,c) \in A \times B \times C : a = b + c \}|. $$ The issue is to determine upper bounds on $μ(A)$ that hold with high probability over the random choice of $A$. Mennink and Preneel \cite{BM} conjecture that $μ(A)$ should be close to $|A|$ (up to possible logarithmic factors in $|G|$) for $α\leq 1/2$ and that $μ(A)$ should not much exceed $|A|^{3/2}$ for $α\leq 2/3$. We prove the second half of this conjecture by showing that $$ μ(A) \leq |A|^3/|G| + 4|A|^{3/2}\ln(|G|)^{1/2} $$ with high probability, for all $0 < α< 1$. We note that $3α- 1 \leq (3/2)α$ for $α\leq 2/3$. In previous work, Alon et al$.$ have shown that $μ(A) \leq O(1)|A|^3/|G|$ with high probability for $α\geq 2/3$ while Kiltz, Pietrzak and Szegedy show that $μ(A) \leq |A|^{1 + 2α}$ with high probability for $α\leq 1/4$. Current bounds on $μ(A)$ are essentially sharp for the range $2/3 \leq α\leq 1$. Finding better bounds remains an open problem for the range $0 < α< 2/3$ and especially for the range $1/4 < α< 2/3$ in which the bound of Kiltz et al$.$ doesn't improve on the bound given in this paper (even if that bound applied). Moreover the conjecture of Mennink and Preneel for $α\leq 1/2$ remains open.

Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv theorem for finite commutative semigroups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a finite commutative semigroup written additively, and let $\exp(\mathcal{S})$ be its exponent which is defined as the least common multiple of all periods of the elements in $\mathcal{S}$. For every sequence $T$ of elements in $\mathcal{S}$ (repetition allowed), let $σ(T) \in \mathcal{S}$ denote the sum of all terms of $T$. Define the Davenport constant $D(\mathcal{S})$ of $\mathcal{S}$ to be the least positive integer $d$ such that every sequence $T$ over $\mathcal{S}$ of length at least $d$ contains a proper subsequence $T'$ with $σ(T')=σ(T)$, and define the Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv Theorem constant $E(\mathcal{S})$ to be the least positive integer $\ell$ such that every sequence $T$ over $\mathcal{S}$ of length at least $\ell$ contains a subsequence $T'$ with $|T|-|T'|=\left\lceil\frac{|\mathcal{S}|}{\exp(\mathcal{S})}\right\rceil\exp(\mathcal{S})$ and $σ(T')=σ(T)$. When $\mathcal{S}$ is a finite abelian group, it is well known that $\left\lceil\frac{|\mathcal{S}|}{\exp(\mathcal{S})}\right\rceil\exp(\mathcal{S})=|\mathcal{S}|$ and $E(\mathcal{S})=D(\mathcal{S})+|\mathcal{S}|-1$. In this paper we investigate whether $E(\mathcal{S})\leq D(\mathcal{S})+\left\lceil\frac{|\mathcal{S}|}{\exp(\mathcal{S})}\right\rceil \exp(\mathcal{S})-1$ holds true for all finite commutative semigroups $\mathcal{S}$. We provide a positive answer to the question above for some classes of finite commutative semigroups, including group-free semigroups, elementary semigroups, and archimedean semigroups with certain constraints.

Groups having complete bipartite divisor graphs for their conjugacy class sizes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite group G, the bipartite divisor graph for its conjugacy class sizes is the bipartite graph with bipartition consisting of the set of conjugacy class sizes of G-Z (where Z denotes the centre of G) and the set of prime numbers that divide these conjugacy class sizes, and with {p,n} being an edge if gcd(p,n)\neq 1. In this paper we construct infinitely many groups whose bipartite divisor graph for their conjugacy class sizes is the complete bipartite graph K_{2,5}, giving a solution to a question of Taeri.
