Approximation of Geodesics in Metabelian Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is known that the bounded Geodesic Length Problem in free metabelian groups is NP-complete (in particular, the Geodesic Problem is NP-hard). We construct a 2-approximation polynomial time deterministic algorithm for the Geodesic Problem. We show that the Geodesic Problem in the restricted wreath product of a finitely generated non-trivial group with a finitely generated abelian group containing $Z^2$ is NP-hard and there exists a Polynomial Time Approximation Scheme for this problem. We also show that the Geodesic Problem in the restricted wreath product of two finitely generated non-trivial abelian groups is NP-hard if and only if the second abelian group contains $Z^2$.

The Real-Rootedness and Log-concavities of Coordinator Polynomials of Weyl Group Lattices
Published in European. J. Combin. 34 (2013) 490-494 • View PublicationBIB
It is well-known that the coordinator polynomials of the classical root lattice of type $A_n$ and those of type $C_n$ are real-rooted. They can be obtained, either by the Aissen-Schoenberg-Whitney theorem, or from their recurrence relations. In this paper, we develop a trigonometric substitution approach which can be used to establish the real-rootedness of coordinator polynomials of type $D_n$. We also find the coordinator polynomials of type $B_n$ are not real-rooted in general. As a conclusion, we obtain that all coordinator polynomials of Weyl group lattices are log-concave.

Pattern avoidance by even permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study questions of even-Wilf-equivalence, the analogue of Wilf-equivalence when attention is restricted to pattern avoidance by permutations in the alternating group. Although some Wilf-equivalence results break when considering even-Wilf-equivalence analogues, we prove that other Wilf-equivalence results continue to hold in the even-Wilf-equivalence setting. In particular, we prove that t(t-1)...321 and (t-1)(t-2)...21t are even-shape-Wilf-equivalent for odd t, paralleling a result (which held for all t) of Backelin, West, and Xin for shape-Wilf-equivalence. This allows us to classify the patterns of length 4, and to partially classify patterns of length 5 and 6. As with transition to involution-Wilf-equivalence, some (but not all) of the classical Wilf-equivalence results are preserved when we make the transition to even-Wilf-equivalence.

Efficient Two-Stage Group Testing Algorithms for DNA Screening
Group testing algorithms are very useful tools for DNA library screening. Building on recent work by Levenshtein (2003) and Tonchev (2008), we construct in this paper new infinite classes of combinatorial structures, the existence of which are essential for attaining the minimum number of individual tests at the second stage of a two-stage disjunctive testing algorithm.

Amenability and Ramsey Theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this article is to connect the notion of the amenability of a discrete group with a new form of structural Ramsey theory. The Ramsey theoretic reformulation of amenability constitutes a considerable weakening of the Folner criterion. As a by-product, it will be shown that in any non amenable group G, there is a subset E of G such that no finitely additive probability measure on G measures all translates of E equally.

From Macdonald Polynomials to a Charge Statistic beyond Type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
The charge is an intricate statistic on words, due to Lascoux and Schutzenberger, which gives positive combinatorial formulas for Lusztig's q-analogue of weight multiplicities and the energy function on affine crystals, both of type A. As these concepts are defined for all Lie types, it has been a long-standing problem to express them based on a generalization of charge. I present a method for addressing this problem in classical Lie types, based on the recent Ram-Yip formula for Macdonald polynomials and the quantum Bruhat order on the corresponding Weyl group. The details of the method are carried out in type A (where we recover the classical charge) and type C (where we define a new statistic).

Representing some non-representable matroids
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 50 (2013), no. 1, 228-242 • View PublicationBIB
We extend the notion of representation of a matroid to algebraic structures that we call skew partial fields. Our definition of such representations extends Tutte's definition, using chain groups. We show how such representations behave under duality and minors, we extend Tutte's representability criterion to this new class, and we study the generator matrices of the chain groups. An example shows that the class of matroids representable over a skew partial field properly contains the class of matroids representable over a skew field. Next, we show that every multilinear representation of a matroid can be seen as a representation over a skew partial field. Finally we study a class of matroids called quaternionic unimodular. We prove a generalization of the Matrix Tree theorem for this class.

Projected Richardson varieties and affine Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a complex quasi-simple algebraic group and $G/P$ be a partial flag variety. The projections of Richardson varieties from the full flag variety form a stratification of $G/P$. We show that the closure partial order of projected Richardson varieties agrees with that of a subset of Schubert varieties in the affine flag variety of $G$. Furthermore, we compare the torus-equivariant cohomology and $K$-theory classes of these two stratifications by pushing or pulling these classes to the affine Grassmannian. Our work generalizes results of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer for the Grassmannian of type $A$.

Counting Generating Invariants Under Semisimple Group and Torus Actions
Although degree bounds and algorithms for the generators of various invariant rings have been known for decades, little is known about the cardinality of minimal generating sets. Estimates of such would provide lower bounds for the runtime of algorithms that compute invariants. Fix a semisimple linear algebraic group, choose an irreducible representation of highest weight w, and consider the irreducible representations of highest weight nw. As n goes to infinity, the cardinality of a minimal set of generating invariants grows faster than any polynomial in n. On the other hand, combinatorial methods yield sub-exponential upper bounds for the growth of generating sets for torus invariants on the binary forms.
Quiver Grassmannians and degenerate flag varieties
Published in ALGEBRA & NUMBER THEORY, vol. 6, p. 165-194, 2012 • View PublicationBIB
Quiver Grassmannians are varieties parametrizing subrepresentations of a quiver representation. It is observed that certain quiver Grassmannians for type A quivers are isomorphic to the degenerate flag varieties investigated earlier by the second named author. This leads to the consideration of a class of Grassmannians of subrepresentations of the direct sum of a projective and an injective representation of a Dynkin quiver. It is proven that these are (typically singular) irreducible normal local complete intersection varieties, which admit a group action with finitely many orbits, and a cellular decomposition. For type A quivers explicit formulas for the Euler characteristic (the median Genocchi numbers) and the Poincare polynomials are derived.

On the classification of Hermitian self-dual additive codes over GF(9)
Published in IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory 58(8), pp. 5500-5511, 2012 • View PublicationBIB
Additive codes over GF(9) that are self-dual with respect to the Hermitian trace inner product have a natural application in quantum information theory, where they correspond to ternary quantum error-correcting codes. However, these codes have so far received far less interest from coding theorists than self-dual additive codes over GF(4), which correspond to binary quantum codes. Self-dual additive codes over GF(9) have been classified up to length 8, and in this paper we extend the complete classification to codes of length 9 and 10. The classification is obtained by using a new algorithm that combines two graph representations of self-dual additive codes. The search space is first reduced by the fact that every code can be mapped to a weighted graph, and a different graph is then introduced that transforms the problem of code equivalence into a problem of graph isomorphism. By an extension technique, we are able to classify all optimal codes of length 11 and 12. There are 56,005,876 (11,3^11,5) codes and 6493 (12,3^12,6) codes. We also find the smallest codes with trivial automorphism group.

Noncommutative sets of small doubling
Published • View PublicationBIB
A corollary of Kneser's theorem, one sees that any finite non-empty subset $A$ of an abelian group $G = (G,+)$ with $|A + A| \leq (2-\eps) |A|$ can be covered by at most $\frac{2}{\eps}-1$ translates of a finite group $H$ of cardinality at most $(2-\eps)|A|$. Using some arguments of Hamidoune, we establish an analogue in the noncommutative setting. Namely, if $A$ is a finite non-empty subset of a nonabelian group $G = (G,\cdot)$ such that $|A \cdot A| \leq (2-\eps) |A|$, then $A$ is either contained in a right-coset of a finite group $H$ of cardinality at most $\frac{2}{\eps}|A|$, or can be covered by at most $\frac{2}{\eps}-1$ right-cosets of a finite group $H$ of cardinality at most $|A|$. We also note some connections with some recent work of Sanders and of Petridis.

Cyclic sieving of finite Grassmannians and flag varieties
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 312, Issue 5, 6 March 2012, Pages 898-910 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we prove instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon for finite Grassmannians and partial flag varieties, which carry the action of various tori in the finite general linear group GL_n(F_q). The polynomials involved are sums of certain weights of the minimal length parabolic coset representatives of the symmetric group S_n, where the weight of a coset representative can be written as a product over its inversions.
Symplectic degenerate flag varieties
Published in Can. J. Math.-J. Can. Math. 66 (2014) 1250-1286 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\SF^a_λ$ be the degenerate symplectic flag variety. These are projective singular irreducible $\bG_a^M$ degenerations of the classical flag varieties for symplectic group $Sp_{2n}$. We give an explicit construction for the varieties $\SF^a_λ$ and construct their desingularizations, similar to the Bott-Samelson resolutions in the classical case. We prove that $\SF^a_\la$ are normal locally complete intersections with terminal and rational singularities. We also show that these varieties are Frobenius split. Using the above mentioned results, we prove an analogue of the Borel-Weil-Bott theorem and obtain a $q$-character formula for the characters of irreducible $Sp_{2n}$-modules via the Atiyah-Bott-Lefschetz fixed points formula.

On the adjoint representation of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ and the Fibonacci numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We decompose the adjoint representation of $\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}=\mathfrak {sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb C)$ by a purely combinatorial approach based on the introduction of a certain subset of the Weyl group called the \emph{Weyl alternation set} associated to a pair of dominant integral weights. The cardinality of the Weyl alternation set associated to the highest root and zero weight of $\mathfrak {sl}_{r+1}$ is given by the $r^{th}$ Fibonacci number. We then obtain the exponents of $\mathfrak {sl}_{r+1}$ from this point of view.

Sudoku Symmetry Group
The mathematical aspects of the popular logic game Sudoku incorporate a significant number of the group theory concepts. In this note, we describe all symmetric transformations of the Sudoku grid. We do not intend to obtain a new strategy of solving Sudoku and do not describe basic ideas of the game which can be found in numerous other sources.

We show that double cosets of the infinite symmetric group with respect to some special subgroups admit natural structures of semigroups. We interpret elements of such semigroups in combinatorial terms (chips, colored graphs, two-dimensional surfaces with polygonal tiling) and describe explicitly the multiplications.
