Setwise intersecting families of permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A family of permutations $A \subset S_n$ is said to be \emph{$t$-set-intersecting} if for any two permutations $σ, π\in A$, there exists a $t$-set $x$ whose image is the same under both permutations, i.e. $σ(x)=π(x)$. We prove that if $n$ is sufficiently large depending on $t$, the largest $t$-set-intersecting families of permutations in $S_n$ are cosets of stabilizers of $t$-sets. The $t=2$ case of this was conjectured by János Körner. It can be seen as a variant of the Deza-Frankl conjecture, proved in [4]. Our proof uses similar techniques to those of [4], namely, eigenvalue methods, together with the representation theory of the symmetric group, but the combinatorial part of the proof is harder.

Deformation of finite-volume hyperbolic Coxeter polyhedra, limiting growth rates and Pisot numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
A connection between real poles of the growth functions for Coxeter groups acting on hyperbolic space of dimensions three and greater and algebraic integers is investigated. In particular, a geometric convergence of fundamental domains for cocompact hyperbolic Coxeter groups with finite-volume limiting polyhedron provides a relation between Salem numbers and Pisot numbers. Several examples conclude this work.

Combinatorial aspects of dynamical Yang-Baxter maps and dynamical braces
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article we propose an algebraic system, which is an abelian group $(A,+)$ with a family of non-associative and non-(left)distributive multiplications $\{\cdot_λ\}_{λ\in H}$. We call this algebraic system dynamical brace. The dynamical brace corresponds to a certain dynamical Yang-Baxter map (which is left nondegenerate and satisfy the unitary condition). Combinatorial aspects of the dynamical brace give us a correspondence between the dynamical brace and a certain family of subsets of $A\rtimes Aut(A)$. From this viewpoint we give an interpretation and examples of the dynamical brace.

Cohomological and Combinatorial Methods in the Study of Symbolic Powers and Equations defining Varieties
In this PhD thesis we will discuss some aspects in Commutative Algebra which have interactions with Algebraic Geometry, Representation Theory and Combinatorics. In particular, in the first chapter we will focus on understanding when certain cohomology modules vanish, a classical problem raised by Grothendieck. In the second chapter we will use local cohomology to study the connectedness behavior during a Groebner deformation and the arithmetical rank of certain varieties. In the third chapter, we will investigate the relations between the minors of a fixed size of a generic matrix by using tools from the representation theory of the general linear group (the results of this chapter will appear in a joint paper with Bruns and Conca). In the last chapter we will use combinatorial methods to study the Cohen-Macaulay property of the symbolic powers of Stanley-Reisner ideals. In the thesis are included five appendixes with some basic needed facts and a preliminary chapter introducing to local cohomology.

Abacus models for parabolic quotients of affine Weyl groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce abacus diagrams that describe minimal length coset representatives in affine Weyl groups of types B, C, and D. These abacus diagrams use a realization of the affine Weyl group of type C due to Eriksson to generalize a construction of James for the symmetric group. We also describe several combinatorial models for these parabolic quotients that generalize classical results in affine type A related to core partitions.

On group choosability of total graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the group and list group colorings of total graphs and we give two group versions of the total and list total colorings conjectures. We establish the group version of the total coloring conjecture for the following classes of graphs: graphs with small maximum degree, two-degenerate graphs, planner graphs with maximum degree at least 11, planner graphs without certain small cycles, outerplanar and near-outerplanar graphs. In addition, the group version of the list total coloring conjecture is established for forests, outerplanar graphs and graphs with maximum degree at most two.

The cyclic coloring complex of a complete k-uniform hypergraph
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the homology of the cyclic coloring complex of three different types of $k$-uniform hypergraphs. For the case of a complete $k$-uniform hypergraph, we show that the dimension of the $(n-k-1)^{st}$ homology group is given by a binomial coefficient. Further, we discuss a complex whose $r$-faces consist of all ordered set partitions $[B_1, ..., B_{r+2}]$ where none of the $B_i$ contain a hyperedge of the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ and where $1 \in B_1$. It is shown that the dimensions of the homology groups of this complex are given by binomial coefficients. As a consequence, this result gives the dimensions of the multilinear parts of the cyclic homology groups of $\C[x_1,...,x_n]/ \{x_{i_1}...x_{i_k} \mid i_{1}...i_{k}$ is a hyperedge of $H \}$. For the other two types of hypergraphs, star hypergraphs and diagonal hypergraphs, we show that the dimensions of the homology groups of their cyclic coloring complexes are given by binomial coefficients as well.

Gauss sums over some matrix groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note, we give explicit expressions of Gauss sums for general (resp. special) linear groups over finite fields, which involves Gauss sums (resp. Kloosterman sums). The key ingredient is averaging such sums over Borel subgroups. As applications, we count the number of invertible matrices of zero-trace over finite fields and we also improve two bounds by Ferguson, Hoffman, Luca, Ostafe and Shparlinski in [ Some additive combinatorics problems in matrix rings, Rev. Mat. Complut. (23) 2010, 501--513 ].

Simple Modules of Exceptional Groups with Normal Closures of Maximal Torus Orbits
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be an exceptional simple algebraic group, and let T be a maximal torus in G. In this paper, for every such G, we find all simple rational G-modules V with the following property: for every vector v in V, the closure of its T-orbit is a normal affine variety. For all G-modules without this property we present a T-orbit with the non-normal closure. To solve this problem, we use a combinatorial criterion of normality formulated in the terms of weights of a simple G-module. This paper continues two papers of the second author, where the same problem was solved for classical linear groups.

Multivariate Diagonal Coinvariant Spaces for Complex Reflection Groups

For finite complex reflexion groups, we consider the graded $W$-modules of diagonally harmonic polynomials in $r$ sets of variables, and show that associated Hilbert series may be described in a global manner, independent of the value of $r$.

Affine and degenerate affine BMW algebras: The center
Published • View PublicationBIB
The degenerate affine and affine BMW algebras arise naturally in the context of Schur-Weyl duality for orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras and quantum groups, respectively. Cyclotomic BMW algebras, affine Hecke algebras, cyclotomic Hecke algebras, and their degenerate versions are quotients. In this paper the theory is unified by treating the orthogonal and symplectic cases simultaneously; we make an exact parallel between the degenerate affine and affine cases via a new algebra which takes the role of the affine braid group for the degenerate setting. A main result of this paper is an identification of the centers of the affine and degenerate affine BMW algebras in terms of rings of symmetric functions which satisfy a "cancellation property" or "wheel condition" (in the degenerate case, a reformulation of a result of Nazarov). Miraculously, these same rings also arise in Schubert calculus, as the cohomology and K-theory of isotropic Grassmanians and symplectic loop Grassmanians. We also establish new intertwiner-like identities which, when projected to the center, produce the recursions for central elements given previously by Nazarov for degenerate affine BMW algebras, and by Beliakova-Blanchet for affine BMW algebras.

Suborbits of a point stabilizer in the orthogonal group on the last subconstituent of orthogonal dual polar graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
As one of the serial papers on suborbits of point stabilizers in classical groups on the last subconstituent of dual polar graphs, the corresponding problem for orthogonal dual polar graphs over a finite field of odd characteristic is discussed in this paper. We determine all the suborbits of a point-stabilizer in the orthogonal group on the last subconstituent, and calculate the length of each suborbit. Moreover, we discuss the quasi-strongly regular graphs and the association schemes based on the last subconstituent, respectively.

On (almost) extreme components in Kronecker products of characters of the symmetric groups
Published in Journal of Algebra 410 (2014) 460-500 • View PublicationBIB
Using a recursion formula due to Dvir, we obtain information on maximal and almost maximal components in Kronecker products of characters of the symmetric groups. This is applied to confirm a conjecture made by Bessenrodt and Kleshchev in 1999, which classifies all such Kronecker products with only three or four components.

Arithmetic matroids, Tutte polynomial, and toric arrangements
We introduce the notion of an arithmetic matroid, whose main example is given by a list of elements of a finitely generated abelian group. In particular we study the representability of its dual, providing an extension of the Gale duality to this setting. Guided by the geometry of generalized toric arrangements, we provide a combinatorial interpretation of the associated arithmetic Tutte polynomial, which can be seen as a generalization of Crapo's formula for the classical Tutte polynomial.

Twisted strong Macdonald theorems and adjoint orbits
Published • View PublicationBIB
The strong Macdonald theorems state that, for $L$ reductive and $s$ an odd variable, the cohomology algebras $H^*(L[z]/z^N)$ and $H^*(L[z,s])$ are freely generated, and describe the cohomological, $s$-, and $z$-degrees of the generators. The resulting identity for the $z$-weighted Euler characteristic is equivalent to Macdonald's constant term identity for a finite root system. We calculate $H^*(\mathfrak{p} / z^N \mathfrak{p})$ and $H^*(\mathfrak{p}[s])$ for $\mathfrak{p}$ a standard parahoric in a twisted loop algebra, giving strong Macdonald theorems that take into account both a parabolic component and a possible diagram automorphism twist. In particular we show that $H^*(\mathfrak{p} / z^N \mathfrak{p})$ contains a parabolic subalgebra of the coinvariant algebra of the fixed-point subgroup of the Weyl group of $L$, and thus is no longer free. We also prove a strong Macdonald theorem for $H^*(\mathfrak{b}; S^* \mathfrak{n}^*)$ and $H^*(\mathfrak{b} / z^N \mathfrak{n})$ when $\mathfrak{b}$ and $\mathfrak{n}$ are Iwahori and nilpotent subalgebras respectively of a twisted loop algebra. For each strong Macdonald theorem proved, taking $z$-weighted Euler characteristics gives an identity equivalent to Macdonald's constant term identity for the corresponding affine root system. As part of the proof, we study the regular adjoint orbits for the adjoint action of the twisted arc group associated to $L$, proving an analogue of the Kostant slice theorem.

Orientations, lattice polytopes, and group arrangements II: Modular and integral flow polynomials of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study modular and integral flow polynomials of graphs by means of subgroup arrangements and lattice polytopes. We introduce an Eulerian equivalence relation on orientations, flow arrangements, and flow polytopes; and we apply the theory of Ehrhart polynomials to obtain properties of modular and integral flow polynomials. The emphasis is on the geometrical treatment through subgroup arrangements and Ehrhart polynomials. Such viewpoint leads to a reciprocity law for the modular flow polynomial, which gives rise to an interpretation on the values of the modular flow polynomial at negative integers, and answers a question by Beck and Zaslavsky.
Algebraic and combinatorial aspects of sandpile monoids on directed graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The sandpile group of a graph is a well-studied object that combines ideas from algebraic graph theory, group theory, dynamical systems, and statistical physics. A graph's sandpile group is part of a larger algebraic structure on the graph, known as its sandpile monoid. Most of the work on sandpiles so far has focused on the sandpile group rather than the sandpile monoid of a graph, and has also assumed the underlying graph to be undirected. A notable exception is the recent work of Babai and Toumpakari, which builds up the theory of sandpile monoids on directed graphs from scratch and provides many connections between the combinatorics of a graph and the algebraic aspects of its sandpile monoid. In this paper we primarily consider sandpile monoids on directed graphs, and we extend the existing theory in four main ways. First, we give a combinatorial classification of the maximal subgroups of a sandpile monoid on a directed graph in terms of the sandpile groups of certain easily-identifiable subgraphs. Second, we point out certain sandpile results for undirected graphs that are really results for sandpile monoids on directed graphs that contain exactly two idempotents. Third, we give a new algebraic constraint that sandpile monoids must satisfy and exhibit two infinite families of monoids that cannot be realized as sandpile monoids on any graph. Finally, we give an explicit combinatorial description of the sandpile group identity for every graph in a family of directed graphs which generalizes the family of (undirected) distance-regular graphs. This family includes many other graphs of interest, including iterated wheels, regular trees, and regular tournaments.

Expander Graphs in Pure and Applied Mathematics
Published • View PublicationBIB
Expander graphs are highly connected sparse finite graphs. They play an important role in computer science as basic building blocks for network constructions, error correcting codes, algorithms and more. In recent years they have started to play an increasing role also in pure mathematics: number theory, group theory, geometry and more. This expository article describes their constructions and various applications in pure and applied mathematics.
