Sums of dilates in groups of prime order
Published in Combinatorics, Probability and Computing 20 (2011), 867-873 • View PublicationBIB
We obtain a first non-trivial estimate for the sum of dilates problem in the case of groups of prime order, by showing that if $t$ is an integer different from $0, 1$ or -1 and if $\A \subset \Zp$ is not too large (with respect to $p$), then $|\A+t\cdot \A|>(2+ \vartheta_t)|\A|-w(t)$ for some constant $w(t)$ depending only on $t$ and for some explicit real number $\vartheta_t >0$ (except in the case $|t|=3$). In the important case $|t|=2$, we may for instance take $\vartheta_2=0.08$.

Representation zeta functions of nilpotent groups and generating functions for Weyl groups of type B
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study representation zeta functions of finitely generated, torsion-free nilpotent groups which are rational points of unipotent group schemes over rings of integers of number fields. Using the Kirillov orbit method and p-adic integration, we prove rationality and functional equations for almost all local factors of the Euler products of these zeta functions. We further give explicit formulae, in terms of Dedekind zeta functions, for the zeta functions of class-2-nilpotent groups obtained from three infinite families of group schemes, generalising the integral Heisenberg group. As an immediate corollary, we obtain precise asymptotics for the representation growth of these groups, and key analytic properties of their zeta functions, such as meromorphic continuation. We express the local factors of these zeta functions in terms of generating functions for finite Weyl groups of type B. This allows us to establish a formula for the joint distribution of three functions, or 'statistics', on such Weyl groups. Finally, we compare our explicit formulae to p-adic integrals associated to relative invariants of three infinite families of prehomogeneous vector spaces.

Symbolic dynamics and the category of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Symbolic dynamics is partly the study of walks in a directed graph. By a walk, here we mean a morphism to the graph from the Cayley graph of the monoid of non-negative integers. Sets of these walks are also important in other areas, such as stochastic processes, automata, combinatorial group theory, $C^*$-algebras, etc. We put a Quillen model structure on the category of directed graphs, for which the weak equivalences are those graph morphisms which induce bijections on the set of walks. We determine the resulting homotopy category. We also introduce a "finite-level" homotopy category which respects the natural topology on the set of walks. To each graph we associate a basal graph, well defined up to isomorphism. We show that the basal graph is a homotopy invariant for our model structure, and that it is a finer invariant than the zeta series of a finite graph. We also show that, for finite walkable graphs, if $B$ is basal and separated then the walk spaces for $X$ and $B$ are topologically conjugate if and only if $X$ and $B$ are homotopically equivalent for our model structure.

Distance spectra and Distance energy of Integral Circulant Graphs
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. 433 (2010), 1005-1014 • Search Publication
The distance energy of a graph $G$ is a recently developed energy-type invariant, defined as the sum of absolute values of the eigenvalues of the distance matrix of $G$. There was a vast research for the pairs and families of non-cospectral graphs having equal distance energy, and most of these constructions were based on the join of graphs. A graph is called circulant if it is Cayley graph on the circulant group, i.e. its adjacency matrix is circulant. A graph is called integral if all eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix are integers. Integral circulant graphs play an important role in modeling quantum spin networks supporting the perfect state transfer. In this paper, we characterize the distance spectra of integral circulant graphs and prove that these graphs have integral eigenvalues of distance matrix $D$. Furthermore, we calculate the distance spectra and distance energy of unitary Cayley graphs. In conclusion, we present two families of pairs $(G_1, G_2)$ of integral circulant graphs with equal distance energy -- in the first family $G_1$ is subgraph of $G_2$, while in the second family the diameter of both graphs is three.

Wronskians, cyclic group actions, and ribbon tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Wronski map is a finite, PGL_2(C)-equivariant morphism from the Grassmannian Gr(d,n) to a projective space (the projectivization of a vector space of polynomials). We consider the following problem. If C_r < PGL_2(C) is a cyclic subgroup of order r, how may C_r-fixed points are in the in a fibre of the Wronski map over a C_r-fixed point in the base? In this paper, we compute a general answer in terms of r-ribbon tableaux. When r=2, this computation gives the number of real points in the fibre of the Wronski map over a real polynomial with purely imaginary roots. More generally, we can compute the number of real points in certain intersections of Schubert varieties. When r divides d(n-d) our main result says that the generic number of C_r-fixed points in the fibre is the number of standard r-ribbon tableaux rectangular shape (n-d)^d. Computing by a different method, we show that the answer in this case is also given by the number of of standard Young tableaux of shape (n-d)^d that are invariant under N/r iterations of jeu de taquin promotion. Together, these two results give a new proof of Rhoades' cyclic sieving theorem for promotion on rectangular tableaux. We prove analogous results for dihedral group actions.

Chains of modular elements and shellability
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A. 119 (2012), no. 6, 1315--1327 • View PublicationBIB
Let L be a lattice admitting a left-modular chain of length r, not necessarily maximal. We show that if either L is graded or the chain is modular, then the (r-2)-skeleton of L is vertex-decomposable (hence shellable). This proves a conjecture of Hersh. Under certain circumstances, we can find shellings of higher skeleta. For instance, if the left-modular chain consists of every other element of some maximum length chain, then L itself is shellable. We apply these results to give a new characterization of finite solvable groups in terms of the topology of subgroup lattices. Our main tool relaxes the conditions for an EL-labeling, allowing multiple ascending chains as long as they are lexicographically before non-ascending chains. We extend results from the theory of EL-shellable posets to such labelings. The shellability of certain skeleta is one such result. Another is that a poset with such a labeling is homotopy equivalent (by discrete Morse theory) to a cell complex with cells in correspondence to weakly descending chains.
Lie algebras and 3-transpositions
Published in J. Algebra 368 (2012), 21-39 • View PublicationBIB
We describe a construction of an algebra over the field of order 2 starting from a conjugacy class of 3-transpositions in a group. In particular, we determine which simple Lie algebras arise by this construction. Among other things, this construction yields a natural embedding of the sporadic simple group $\Fi{22}$ in the group $^2E_6(2)$.
An Inductive Approach to Coxeter Arrangements and Solomon's Descent Algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper we claimed that both the group algebra of a finite Coxeter group $W$ as well as the Orlik-Solomon algebra of $W$ can be decomposed into a sum of induced one-dimensional representations of centralizers, one for each conjugacy class of elements of $W$, and gave a uniform proof of this claim for symmetric groups. In this note we outline an inductive approach to our conjecture. As an application of this method, we prove the inductive version of the conjecture for finite Coxeter groups of rank up to 2.

Partial mirror symmetry, lattice presentations and algebraic monoids
Published in Proc. London Math. Soc. 107(2) (2013), 414-450 • View PublicationBIB
This is the second in a series of papers that develops the theory of reflection monoids, motivated by the theory of reflection groups. Reflection monoids were first introduced in arXiv:0812.2789. In this paper we study their presentations as abstract monoids. Along the way we also find general presentations for certain join-semilattices (as monoids under join) which we interpret for two special classes of examples: the face lattices of convex polytopes and the geometric lattices, particularly the intersection lattices of hyperplane arrangements. Another spin-off is a general presentation for the Renner monoid of an algebraic monoid, which we illustrate in the special case of the "classical" algebraic monoids.

Rainbow-free 3-colorings of Abelian Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
A 3-coloring of the elements of an abelian group is said to be rainbow--free if there is no 3-term arithmetic progression with its members having pairwise distinct colors. We give a structural characterization of rainbow--free colorings of abelian groups. This characterization proves a conjecture of Jungić et al. on the size of the smallest chromatic class of a rainbow-free 3-coloring of cyclic groups.

The Tutte polynomial and the automorphism group of a graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ is said to be $p$-periodic, if the automorphism group $Aut(G)$ contains an element of order $p$ which preserves no edges. In this paper, we investigate the behavior of graph polynomials (Negmai and Tutte) with respect to graph periodicity. In particular, we prove that if $p$ is a prime, then the coefficients of the Tutte polynomial of such a graph satisfy a certain necessary condition. This result is illustrated by an example where the Tutte polynomial is used to rule out the periodicity of the Frucht graph.

Path description of type B q-characters
Published in Advances in Mathematics 231 no. 2 (2012) pp 1119--1150 • View PublicationBIB
We give a set of sufficient conditions for a Laurent polynomial to be the q-character of a finite-dimensional irreducible representation of a quantum affine group. We use this result to obtain an explicit path description of q-characters for a class of modules in type B. In particular, this proves a conjecture of Kuniba-Ohta-Suzuki.

Weak Convergence of Laws of Finite Graphs
The law of a finite graph is a probability measure induced by the orbits of the graph under its automorphism group. Every law satisfies the intrinsic mass transport principle, which is also known as unimodularity. We discuss the convergence of sequences of laws of finite graphs. Of particular importance is a conjecture proposed by Aldous and Lyons that claims every unimodular measure is a limit of a sequence of laws. Aside from this open problem, other directions of research are also mentioned. We work out in detail a number of results and examples, some of which are new, and others that have been previously stated without proofs. These results include a new characterization of laws of finite connected graphs, a description of the topological space of paths, and a proof that the compact space of weak limits of laws is convex.

2-generated Cayley digraphs on nilpotent groups have hamiltonian paths

Suppose G is a nilpotent, finite group. We show that if {a,b} is any 2-element generating set of G, then the corresponding Cayley digraph Cay(G;a,b) has a hamiltonian path. This implies there is a hamiltonian path in every connected Cayley graph on G that has valence at most 4.

Arrangements stable under the Coxeter groups
Published in Configuration Spaces: Geometry, Combinatorics and Topology, Scuola Normale Superiore Pisa, pp.327-354, 2012 • View PublicationBIB
Let B be a real hyperplane arrangement which is stable under the action of a Coxeter group W. Then B acts naturally on the set of chambers of B. We assume that B is disjoint from the Coxeter arrangement A=A(W) of W. In this paper, we show that the W-orbits of the set of chambers of B are in one-to-one correspondence with the chambers of C=A\cup B which are contained in an arbitrarily fixed chamber of A. From this fact, we find that the number of W-orbits of the set of chambers of B is given by the number of chambers of C divided by the order of W. We will also study the set of chambers of C which are contained in a chamber b of B. We prove that the cardinality of this set is equal to the order of the isotropy subgroup W_b of b. We illustrate these results with some examples, and solve an open problem in Kamiya, Takemura and Terao [Ranking patterns of unfolding models of codimension one, Adv. in Appl. Math. (2010)] by using our results.

We study the distribution of the major index with sign on some parabolic quotients of the symmetric group, extending and generalizing simultaneously results Gessel-Simion and Adin-Gessel-Roichman, and on some special trees that we call rakes. We further consider and compute the distribution of the flag-major index on some parabolic quotients of wreath products and other related groups. All these distributions turn out to have very simple factorization formulas.

Some other algebraic properties of folded hypercubes
