Order-Chain Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given two families $X$ and $Y$ of integral polytopes with nice combinatorial and algebraic properties, a natural way to generate new class of polytopes is to take the intersection $\mathcal{P}=\mathcal{P}_1\cap\mathcal{P}_2$, where $\mathcal{P}_1\in X$, $\mathcal{P}_2\in Y$. Two basic questions then arise: 1) when $\mathcal{P}$ is integral and 2) whether $\mathcal{P}$ inherits the "old type" from $\mathcal{P}_1, \mathcal{P}_2$ or has a "new type", that is, whether $\mathcal{P}$ is unimodularly equivalent to some polytope in $X\cup Y$ or not. In this paper, we focus on the families of order polytopes and chain polytopes and create a new class of polytopes following the above framework, which are named order-chain polytopes. In the study on their volumes, we discover a natural relation with Ehrenborg and Mahajan's results on maximizing descent statistics.

Convex-normal (pairs of) polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2012 Gubeladze (Adv.\ Math.\ 2012) introduced the notion of k-convex-normal polytopes to show that integral polytopes all of whose edges are longer than 4d(d+1) have the integer decomposition property. In the first part of this paper we show that for lattice polytopes there is no difference between k- and (k+1)-convex-normality (for k >= 3) and improve the bound to 2d(d+1). In the second part we extend the definition to pairs of polytopes and show that for rational polytopes P and Q, where the normal fan of P is a refinement of the normal fan of Q, if every edge e_P of P is at least d times as long as the corresponding edge e_Q of Q, then (P+Q) \cap \Z^d = (P\cap \Z^d) + (Q \cap \Z^d).

Largest integral simplices with one interior integral point: Solution of Hensley's conjecture and related results
Published • View PublicationBIB
For each dimension $d$, $d$-dimensional integral simplices with exactly one interior integral point have bounded volume. This was first shown by Hensley. Explicit volume bounds were determined by Hensley, Lagarias and Ziegler, Pikhurko, and Averkov. In this paper we determine the exact upper volume bound for such simplices and characterize the volume-maximizing simplices. We also determine the sharp upper bound on the coefficient of asymmetry of an integral polytope with a single interior integral point. This result confirms a conjecture of Hensley from 1983. Moreover, for an integral simplex with precisely one interior integral point, we give bounds on the volumes of its faces, the barycentric coordinates of the interior integral point and its number of integral points. Furthermore, we prove a bound on the lattice diameter of integral polytopes with a fixed number of interior integral points. The presented results have applications in toric geometry and in integer optimization.
Forbidden vertices
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this work, we introduce and study the forbidden-vertices problem. Given a polytope P and a subset X of its vertices, we study the complexity of linear optimization over the subset of vertices of P that are not contained in X. This problem is closely related to finding the k-best basic solutions to a linear problem. We show that the complexity of the problem changes significantly depending on the encoding of both P and X. We provide additional tractability results and extended formulations when P has binary vertices only. Some applications and extensions to integral polytopes are discussed.
Reverse Chvátal-Gomory rank
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the reverse Chvátal-Gomory rank r*(P) of an integral polyhedron P, defined as the supremum of the Chvátal-Gomory ranks of all rational polyhedra whose integer hull is P. A well-known example in dimension two shows that there exist integral polytopes P with r*(P) equal to infinity. We provide a geometric characterization of polyhedra with this property in general dimension, and investigate upper bounds on r*(P) when this value is finite.

Ehrhart f*-coefficients of polytopal complexes are non-negative integers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Ehrhart polynomial $L_P$ of an integral polytope $P$ counts the number of integer points in integral dilates of $P$. Ehrhart polynomials of polytopes are often described in terms of their Ehrhart $h^*$-vector (aka Ehrhart $δ$-vector), which is the vector of coefficients of $L_P$ with respect to a certain binomial basis and which coincides with the $h$-vector of a regular unimodular triangulation of $P$ (if one exists). One important result by Stanley about $h^*$-vectors of polytopes is that their entries are always non-negative. However, recent combinatorial applications of Ehrhart theory give rise to polytopal complexes with $h^*$-vectors that have negative entries. In this article we introduce the Ehrhart $f^*$-vector of polytopes or, more generally, of polytopal complexes $K$. These are again coefficient vectors of $L_K$ with respect to a certain binomial basis of the space of polynomials and they have the property that the $f^*$-vector of a unimodular simplicial complex coincides with its $f$-vector. The main result of this article is a counting interpretation for the $f^*$-coefficients which implies that $f^*$-coefficients of integral polytopal complexes are always non-negative integers. This holds even if the polytopal complex does not have a unimodular triangulation and if its $h^*$-vector does have negative entries. Our main technical tool is a new partition of the set of lattice points in a simplicial cone into discrete cones. Further results include a complete characterization of Ehrhart polynomials of integral partial polytopal complexes and a non-negativity theorem for the $f^*$-vectors of rational polytopal complexes.

Separating hyperplanes of edge polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a finite connected simple graph with $d$ vertices and let $\Pc_G \subset \RR^d$ be the edge polytope of $G$. We call $\Pc_G$ \emph{decomposable} if $\Pc_G$ decomposes into integral polytopes $\Pc_{G^+}$ and $\Pc_{G^-}$ via a hyperplane. In this paper, we explore various aspects of decomposition of $\Pc_G$: we give an algorithm deciding the decomposability of $\Pc_G$, we prove that $\Pc_G$ is normal if and only if both $\Pc_{G^+}$ and $\Pc_{G^-}$ are normal, and we also study how a condition on the toric ideal of $\Pc_G$ (namely, the ideal being generated by quadratic binomials) behaves under decomposition.

Hermite normal forms and $δ$-vector
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $δ(\Pc) = (δ_0, δ_1,..., δ_d)$ be the $δ$-vector of an integral polytope $\Pc \subset \RR^N$ of dimension $d$. Following the previous work of characterizing the $δ$-vectors with $\sum_{i=0}^d δ_i \leq 3$, the possible $δ$-vectors with $\sum_{i=0}^d δ_i = 4$ will be classified. And each possible $δ$-vectors can be obtained by simplices. We get this result by studying the problem of classifying the possible integral simplices with a given $δ$-vector $(δ_0, δ_1,..., δ_d)$, where $\sum_{i=0}^d δ_i \leq 4$, by means of Hermite normal forms of square matrices.

Higher integrality conditions, volumes and Ehrhart polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
A polytope is integral if all of its vertices are lattice points. The constant term of the Ehrhart polynomial of an integral polytope is known to be 1. In previous work, we showed that the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of a lattice-face polytope are volumes of projections of the polytope. We generalize both results by introducing a notion of $k$-integral polytopes, where 0-integral is equivalent to integral. We show that the Ehrhart polynomial of a $k$-integral polytope $P$ has the properties that the coefficients in degrees less than or equal to $k$ are determined by a projection of $P$, and the coefficients in higher degrees are determined by slices of $P$. A key step of the proof is that under certain generality conditions, the volume of a polytope is equal to the sum of volumes of slices of the polytope.

On a family of tridiagonal matrices
We show that certain integral positive definite symmetric tridiagonal matrices of determinant $n$ are in one to one correspondence with elements of $(\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z)^*$. We study some properties of this correspondence. In a somewhat unrelated second part we discuss a construction which associates a sequence of integral polytopes to every integral symmetric matrix.

Diagonal vectors of shifted Young tableaux
We study vectors formed by entries on the diagonal of standard Young tableaux of shifted shapes. Such vectors are in bijection with integer lattice points of certain integral polytopes, which are Minkowski sums of simplices. We also describe vertices of these polytopes, and construct corresponding shifted Young tableaux.

Quasi-period collapse and GL_n(Z)-scissors congruence in rational polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Quasi-period collapse occurs when the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational polytope has a quasi-period less than the denominator of that polytope. This phenomenon is poorly understood, and all known cases in which it occurs have been proven with ad hoc methods. In this note, we present a conjectural explanation for quasi-period collapse in rational polytopes. We show that this explanation applies to some previous cases appearing in the literature. We also exhibit examples of Ehrhart polynomials of rational polytopes that are not the Ehrhart polynomials of any integral polytope. Our approach depends on the invariance of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial under the action of affine unimodular transformations. Motivated by the similarity of this idea to the scissors congruence problem, we explore the development of a Dehn-like invariant for rational polytopes in the lattice setting.

We use a version of localization in equivariant cohomology for the norm-square of the moment map, described by Paradan, to give several weighted decompositions for simple polytopes. As an application, we study Euler-Maclaurin formulas.

The Weighted Euler-Maclaurin Formula for a simple integral polytope

We give an Euler-Maclaurin formula with remainder for the weighted sum of the values of a smooth function on the integral points in a simple integral polytope. Our work generalizes the formula obtained by Karshon, Sternberg and Weitsman in the ''Euler-Maclaurin with remainder for a simple integral polytope''.

Toric manifolds with degenerate dual variety and defect polytopes
We classify projective toric manifolds whose dual variety is not a hypersurface in the dual projective space. Under the standard dictionary between toric geometry and convex geometry, they correspond to certain convex Delzant integer polytopes, P, which we call defect polytopes. Using the geometrical classification we give a detailed description of defect polytopes and prove that they are characterized by the vanishing of a combinatorial invariant, denoted by c(P). We further prove that a related invariant, c*(P), is nonnegative, for any simple convex integral polytope.
