On products of sl_n characters and support containment
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $λ$, $μ$, $ν$ and $ρ$ be dominant weights of $\mathfrak{sl_n}$ satisfying $λ+ μ= ν+ ρ$. Let $V_λ$ denote the highest weight module corresponding to $λ$. Lam, Postnikov, Pylyavskyy conjectured a sufficient condition for $V_λ \otimes V_μ$ to be contained in $V_ν \otimes V_ρ$ as $\mathfrak{sl_n}$-modules. In this note we prove a weaker version of the conjecture. Namely we prove that under the conjectured conditions every irreducible $\mathfrak{sl_n}$-module which appears in the decomposition of $V_λ \otimes V_μ$ does appear in the decomposition of $V_ν \otimes V_ρ$.

The Tetrahedron algebra and its finite-dimensional irreducible modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently Terwilliger and the present author found a presentation for the three-point $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ loop algebra via generators and relations. To obtain this presentation we defined a Lie algebra $\boxtimes$ by generators and relations and displayed an isomorphism from $\boxtimes$ to the three-point $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ loop algebra. In this paper we classify the finite-dimensional irreducible $\boxtimes$-modules.

Crystal bases and combinatorics of infinite rank quantum groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The tensor powers of the vector representation associated to an infinite rank quantum group decompose into irreducible components with multiplicities independant of the infinite root system considered. Although the irreducible modules obtained in this way are not of highest weight, they admit a crystal basis and a canonical basis. This permits in particular to obtain for each familly of classical Lie algebras a Robinson-Schensted correspondence on biwords defined on infinite alphabets. We then depict a structure of bi-crystal on these bi-words. This RS-correspondence yields also a plactic algebra and plactic Schur functions distinct for each infinite root system. Surprisingly, the algebras spanned by these plactic Schur functions are all isomorphic to the algebra of symmetric functions.

The subconstituent algebra of a bipartite distance-regular graph; thin modules with endpoint two
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a bipartite distance-regular graph $G$ with diameter at least 4 and valency at least 3. Fix a vertex of $G$ and let $T$ denote the corresponding subconstituent algebra. We give a detailed description of a certain type of irreducible $T$-module, said to be thin with endpoint 2.

Branching rules for Hecke Algebras of Type $D_{n}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the branching problems for Hecke algebra $\H(D_n)$ of type $D_n$. We explicitly describe the decompositions of the socle of the restriction of each irreducible $\H(D_n)$-representation to $\H(D_{n-1})$ into irreducible modules by using the corresponding results for type $B$ Hecke algebras. In particular, we show that any such restrictions are always multiplicity free.
The Terwilliger algebra of an almost-bipartite P- and Q-polynomial association scheme
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Y$ denote a $D$-class symmetric association scheme with $D \geq 3$, and suppose $Y$ is almost-bipartite P- and Q-polynomial. Let $x$ denote a vertex of $Y$ and let $T=T(x)$ denote the corresponding Terwilliger algebra. We prove that any irreducible $T$-module $W$ is both thin and dual thin in the sense of Terwilliger. We produce two bases for $W$ and describe the action of $T$ on these bases. We prove that the isomorphism class of $W$ as a $T$-module is determined by two parameters, the dual endpoint and diameter of $W$. We find a recurrence which gives the multiplicities with which the irreducible $T$-modules occur in the standard module. We compute this multiplicity for those irreducible $T$-modules which have diameter at least $D-3$.

Taut distance-regular graphs and the subconstituent algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a bipartite distance-regular graph $G$ with diameter $D$ at least 4 and valency $k$ at least 3. We obtain upper and lower bounds for the local eigenvalues of $G$ in terms of the intersection numbers of $G$ and the eigenvalues of $G$. Fix a vertex of $G$ and let $T$ denote the corresponding subconstituent algebra. We give a detailed description of those thin irreducible $T$-modules that have endpoint 2 and dimension $D-3$. In an earlier paper the first author defined what it means for $G$ to be taut. We obtain three characterizations of the taut condition, each of which involves the local eigenvalues or the thin irreducible $T$-modules mentioned above.

Distance-regular graphs, pseudo primitive idempotents, and the Terwilliger algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Γ$ denote a distance-regular graph with diameter $D\geq 3$ and Bose-Mesner algebra $M$. For $θ\in C\cup \infty$ we define a 1 dimensional subspace of $M$ which we call $M(θ)$. If $θ\in C$ then $M(θ)$ consists of those $Y$ in $M$ such that $(A-θI)Y\in C A_D$, where $A$ (resp. $A_D$) is the adjacency matrix (resp. $D$th distance matrix) of $Γ.$ If $θ= \infty$ then $M(θ)= C A_D$. By a {\it pseudo primitive idempotent} for $θ$ we mean a nonzero element of $M(θ)$. We use pseudo primitive idempotents to describe the irreducible modules for the Terwilliger algebra, that are thin with endpoint one.

Two relations that generalize the $q$-Serre relations and the Dolan-Grady relations
We define an algebra on two generators which we call the Tridiagonal algebra, and we consider its irreducible modules. The algebra is defined as follows. Let K denote a field, and let $β, γ, γ^*, \varrho, \varrho^*$ denote a sequence of scalars taken from K. The corresponding Tridiagonal algebra $T$ is the associative K-algebra with 1 generated by two symbols $A$, $A^*$ subject to the relations (i) \lbrack A,A^2A^*-βAA^*A + A^*A^2 -γ(AA^*+A^*A)- \varrho A^*\rbrack = 0, (ii) \lbrack A^*,A^{*2}A-βA^*AA^* + AA^{*2} -γ^* (A^*A+AA^*)- \varrho^* A\rbrack = 0, where $\lbrack r,s\rbrack $ means $rs-sr$. We call these relations the Tridiagonal relations. For $β= q+q^{-1}$, $γ= γ^*=0$, $\varrho=\varrho^*=0$, the Tridiagonal relations are the $q$-Serre relations. For $β= 2$, $γ= γ^*=0$, $\varrho=b^2$, $\varrho^*=b^{*2}$, the Tridiagonal relations are the Dolan-Grady relations. In the first part of this paper, we survey what is known about irreducible finite dimensional $T$-modules. We focus on how these modules are related to the Leonard pairs recently introduced by the present author, and the more general Tridiagonal pairs recently introduced by Ito, Tanabe, and the present author. In the second part of the paper, we construct an infinite dimensional irreducible $T$-module based on the Askey-Wilson polynomials.

Hook Interpolations
Published in J. Algebra 258 (2002), 543--562 • View PublicationBIB
The hook components of $V^{\otimes n}$ interpolate between the symmetric power $\sym^n(V)$ and the exterior power $\wedge^n(V)$. When $V$ is the vector space of $k\times m$ matrices over $\bbc$, we decompose the hook components into irreducible $GL_k(\bbc)\times GL_m(\bbc)$-modules. In particular, classical theorems are proved as boundary cases. For the algebra of square matrices over $\bbc$, a bivariate interpolation is presented and studied.

Parameterizing Hecke algebra modules: Bernstein-Zelevinsky multisegments, Kleshchev multipartitions, and crystal graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper provides a combinatorial dictionary between three sets of objects: Bernstein-Zelevinsky multisegments, Kleshchev multipartitions, and the irreducible modules of the affine Hecke algebra $H_n$ (for generic $q$). In particular, we compute the action of the crystal operator $\tilde{e}_i$ (a refinement of socle of Restriction) on an irreducible module both in terms of its parameterization by multisegments and by multipartitions. In other words, we give explicit crystal graph isomorphisms. A byproduct is the determination of which multisegments parameterize modules of the {\it cyclotomic} Hecke algebra $H_n^λ$. The theorems also explain why the rule for computing $\tilde{e}_i$ mirrors the rule we know for that on a tensor product of crystal graphs. We also give a construction of the irreducible module parameterized by a multipartition without relying on a choice of path in the crystal graph. The proofs given here are elementary and do not rely on any geometry.

On irreducibility of tensor products of Yangian modules associated with skew Young diagrams
Published in Duke Math. J. 112 (2002), 343-378 • View PublicationBIB
We study the tensor product $W$ of any number of "elementary" irreducible modules $V_1,...,V_k$ over the Yangian of the general linear Lie algebra. Each of these modules is determined by a skew Young diagram and a complex parameter. For any indices $i,j=1,...,k$ there is a canonical non-zero intertwining operator $A_{ij}$ between the tensor products $V_i\otimes V_j$ and $V_j\otimes V_i$. This operator is defined up to a scalar multipler. We show that the tensor product $W$ is irreducible, if and only if all operators $A_{ij}$ with $i<j$ are invertible. This implies that the Yangian module $W$ is irreducible, if and only if all pairwise tensor products $V_i\otimes V_j$ with $i<j$ are irreducible. We also introduce the notion of a Durfee rank of a skew Young diagram. For an ordinary Young diagram, this is the length of its main diagonal.
