${\mathbb G}_a^M$ degeneration of flag varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\Fl_λ$ be a generalized flag variety of a simple Lie group $G$ embedded into the projectivization of an irreducible $G$-module $V_λ$. We define a flat degeneration $\Fl_λ^a$, which is a ${\mathbb G}^M_a$ variety. Moreover, there exists a larger group $G^a$ acting on $\Fl_λ^a$, which is a degeneration of the group $G$. The group $G^a$ contains ${\mathbb G}^M_a$ as a normal subgroup. If $G$ is of type $A$, then the degenerate flag varieties can be embedded into the product of Grassmanians and thus to the product of projective spaces. The defining ideal of $\Fl^a_λ$ is generated by the set of degenerate Pl\" ucker relations. We prove that the coordinate ring of $\Fl_λ^a$ is isomorphic to a direct sum of dual PBW-graded $\g$-modules. We also prove that there exist bases in multi-homogeneous components of the coordinate rings, parametrized by the semistandard PBW-tableux, which are analogues of semistandard tableux.

Structure of Thin Irreducible Modules of a Q-polynomial Distance-Regular Graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let Gamma be a Q-polynomial distance-regular graph with vertex set X, diameter D geq 3 and adjacency matrix A. Fix x in X and let A*=A*(x) be the corresponding dual adjacency matrix. Recall that the Terwilliger algebra T=T(x) is the subalgebra of Mat_X(C) generated by A and A*. Let W denote a thin irreducible T-module. It is known that the action of A and A* on W induces a linear algebraic object known as a Leonard pair. Over the past decade, many results have been obtained concerning Leonard pairs. In this paper, these results will be applied to obtain a detailed description of W. In particular, we give a description of W in terms of its intersection numbers, dual intersection numbers and parameter array. Finally, we apply our results to the case in which Gamma has q-Racah type or classical parameters.

PBW filtration and bases for irreducible modules in type $A_n$
Published in Transform. Groups 165 (2011), no. 1, 71-89 • View PublicationBIB
We study the PBW filtration on the highest weight representations $V(\la)$ of $\msl_{n+1}$. This filtration is induced by the standard degree filtration on $U(\n^-)$. We give a description of the associated graded $S(\n^-)$-module $gr V(\la)$ in terms of generators and relations. We also construct a basis of $gr V(\la)$. As an application we derive a graded combinatorial character formula for $V(\la)$, and we obtain a new class of bases of the modules $V(\la)$ conjectured by Vinberg in 2005.

Symmetric and Antisymmetric Vector-valued Jack Polynomials
Published in Sem. Lothar. Combin. B64a (2010), 31 pp • Search Publication
Polynomials with values in an irreducible module of the symmetric group can be given the structure of a module for the rational Cherednik algebra, called a standard module. This algebra has one free parameter and is generated by differential-difference ("Dunkl") operators, multiplication by coordinate functions and the group algebra. By specializing Griffeth's (arXiv:0707.0251) results for the G(r,p,n) setting, one obtains norm formulae for symmetric and antisymmetric polynomials in the standard module. Such polynomials of minimum degree have norms which involve hook-lengths and generalize the norm of the alternating polynomial.

Characterizing completely regular codes from an algebraic viewpoint
Published • View PublicationBIB
We first summarize the basic structure of the outer distribution module of a completely regular code. Then, employing a simple lemma concerning eigenvectors in association schemes, we propose to study the tightest case, where the indices of the eigenspace that appear in the outer distribution module are equally spaced. In addition to the arithmetic codes of the companion paper, this highly structured class includes other beautiful examples and we propose the classification of $Q$-polynomial completely regular codes in the Hamming graphs. A key result is Theorem 3.10 which finds that the $Q$-polynomial condition is equivalent to the presence of a certain Leonard pair. This connection has impact in two directions. First, the Leonard pairs are classified and we gain quite a bit of information about the algebraic structure of any code in our class. But also this gives a new setting for the study of Leonard pairs, one closely related to the classical one where a Leonard pair arises from each thin/dual-thin irreducible module of a Terwilliger algebra of some $P$- and $Q$-polynomial association scheme, yet not previously studied. It is particularly interesting that the Leonard pair associated to some code $C$ may belong to one family in the Askey scheme while the distance-regular graph in which the code is found may belong to another.

Combinatorics of $(\ell,0)$-JM partitions, $\ell$-cores, the ladder crystal and the finite Hecke algebra
The following thesis contains results on the combinatorial representation theory of the finite Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$. In Chapter 2 simple combinatorial descriptions are given which determine when a Specht module corresponding to a partition $λ$ is irreducible. This is done by extending the results of James and Mathas. These descriptions depend on the crystal of the basic representation of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_\ell}$. In Chapter 3 these results are extended to determine which irreducible modules have a realization as a Specht module. To do this, a new condition of irreducibility due to Fayers is combined with a new description of the crystal from Chapter 2. In Chapter 4 a bijection of cores first described by myself and Monica Vazirani is studied in more depth. Various descriptions of it are given, relating to the quotient $\widetilde{S_\ell}/{S_\ell}$ and to the bijection given by Lapointe and Morse.

Representations of Lie Algebras and Coding Theory
Linear codes with large minimal distances are important error correcting codes in information theory.Orthogonal codes have more applications in the other fields of mathematics. In this paper, we study the binary and ternary orthogonal codes generated by the weight matrices on finite-dimensional modules of simple Lie algebras. The Weyl groups of the Lie algebras act on these codes isometrically. It turns out that certain weight matrices of $sl(n,\mbb{C})$ and $o(2n,\mbb{C})$ generate doubly-even binary orthogonal codes and ternary orthogonal codes with large minimal distances. Moreover, we prove that the weight matrices of $F_4$, $E_6$, $E_7$ and $E_8$ on their minimal irreducible modules and adjoint modules all generate ternary orthogonal codes with large minimal distances. In determining the minimal distances, we have used the Weyl groups and branch rules of the irreducible representations of the related simple Lie algebras.

Particles in RSOS paths
Published in J.Phys.A42:122001,2009 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new representation of the paths of the Forrester-Baxter RSOS models which represents the states of the irreducible modules of the minimal models M(p',p). This representation is obtained by transforming the RSOS paths, for the cases p> 2p'-2, to new paths for which horizontal edges are allowed at certain heights. These new paths are much simpler in that their weight is nothing but the sum of the position of the peaks. This description paves the way for the interpretation of the RSOS paths in terms of fermi-type charged particles out of which the fermionic characters could be obtained constructively. The derivation of the fermionic character for p'=2 and p=kp'+/- 1 is outlined. Finally, the particles of the RSOS paths are put in relation with the kinks and the breathers of the restricted sine-Gordon model.

Terwilliger Algebras of Wreath Powers of One-Class Association Schemes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the subconstituent algebras, also called as Terwilliger algebras, of association schemes that are obtained as the wreath product of one-class association schemes $K_n=H(1, n)$ for $n\ge 2$. We find that the $d$-class association scheme $K_{n_{1}}\wr K_{n_{2}} \wr ... \wr K_{n_{d}}$ formed by taking the wreath product of $K_{n_{i}}$ has the triple-regularity property. We determine the dimension of the Terwilliger algebra for the association scheme $K_{n_{1}}\wr K_{n_{2}}\wr ... \wr K_ {n_{d}}$. We give a description of the structure of the Terwilliger algebra for the wreath power $(K_n)^{\wr d}$ for $n \geq 2$ by studying its irreducible modules. In particular, we show that the Terwilliger algebra of $(K_n)^{\wr d}$ is isomorphic to $M_{d+1}(\mathbb{C})\oplus M_1(\mathbb{C})^{\oplus \frac12d(d+1)}$ for $n\ge3$, and $M_{d+1}(\mathbb{C})\oplus M_1(\mathbb{C})^{\oplus \frac12d(d-1)}$ for $n=2$.

Homogeneous Representations of Khovanov-Lauda Algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct irreducible graded representations of simply laced Khovanov-Lauda algebras which are concentrated in one degree. The underlying combinatorics of skew shapes and standard tableaux corresponding to arbitrary simply laced types has been developed previously by Peterson, Proctor and Stembridge. In particular, the Peterson-Proctor hook formula gives dimensions of the homogeneous irreducible modules corresponding to straight shapes.

The Planar Rook Algebra and Pascal's Triangle
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the combinatorial representation theory of the ``planar rook algebra" $P_n$. This algebra has a basis consisting of planar rook diagrams and multiplication given by diagram concatenation. For each integer $0 \le k \le n$, we construct natural representations $V^n_k$ which form a complete set of non-isomorphic, irreducible $P_n$-representations. We explicitly decompose the regular representation of $P_n$ into a direct sum of irreducible modules. We compute the Bratteli diagram for the tower of algebras $P_0 \subseteq P_1 \subseteq P_2 \subseteq ...$ and show that this Bratteli diagram is Pascal's triangle. In fact, we show that many of the binomial identities, both additive and multiplicative, have interpretations in terms of the representation theory of the planar rook algebra.

Jack polynomials and the coinvariant ring of $G(r,p,n)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the coinvariant ring of the complex reflection group $G(r,p,n)$ as a module for the corresponding rational Cherednik algebra $\HH$ and its generalized graded affine Hecke subalgebra $\mathcal{H}$. We construct a basis consisting of non-symmetric Jack polynomials, and using this basis decompose the coinvariant ring into irreducible modules for $\mathcal{H}$. The basis consists of certain non-symmetric Jack polynomials, whose leading terms are the ``descent monomials'' for $G(r,p,n)$ recently studied by Adin, Brenti, and Roichman and Bagno and Biagoli. The irreducible $\mathcal{H}$-submodules of the coinvariant ring are their ``colored descent representations''.

The Terwilliger Algebra of a Distance-Regular Graph of Negative Type
Let $Γ$ denote a distance-regular graph with diameter $D \ge 3$. Assume $Γ$ has classical parameters $(D,b,α,β)$ with $b < -1$. Let $X$ denote the vertex set of $Γ$ and let $A \in MX$ denote the adjacency matrix of $Γ$. Fix $x \in X$ and let $A^* \in MX$ denote the corresponding dual adjacency matrix. Let $T$ denote the subalgebra of $MX$ generated by $A, A^*$. We call $T$ the {\em Terwilliger algebra} of $Γ$ with respect to $x$. We show that up to isomorphism there exist exactly two irreducible $T$-modules with endpoint 1; their dimensions are $D$ and $2D-2$. For these $T$-modules we display a basis consisting of eigenvectors for $A^*$, and for each basis we give the action of $A$

New path description for the M(k+1,2k+3) models and the dual Z_k graded parafermions
Published in J.Stat.Mech.0711:P11005,2007 • View PublicationBIB
We present a new path description for the states of the non-unitary M(k+1,2k+3) models. This description differs from the one induced by the Forrester-Baxter solution, in terms of configuration sums, of their restricted-solid-on-solid model. The proposed path representation is actually very similar to the one underlying the unitary minimal models M(k+1,k+2), with an analogous Fermi-gas interpretation. This interpretation leads to fermionic expressions for the finitized M(k+1,2k+3) characters, whose infinite-length limit represent new fermionic characters for the irreducible modules. The M(k+1,2k+3) models are also shown to be related to the Z_k graded parafermions via a (q to 1/q) duality transformation.

Distance-regular graphs of $q$-Racah type and the $q$-tetrahedron algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we discuss a relationship between the following two algebras: (i) the subconstituent algebra $T$ of a distance-regular graph that has $q$-Racah type; (ii) the $q$-tetrahedron algebra $\boxtimes_q$ which is a $q$-deformation of the three-point $sl_2$ loop algebra. Assuming that every irreducible $T$-module is thin, we display an algebra homomorphism from $\boxtimes_q$ into $T$ and show that $T$ is generated by the image together with the center $Z(T)$.

Orthogonal functions generalizing Jack polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The rational Cherednik algebra $\HH$ is a certain algebra of differential-reflection operators attached to a complex reflection group $W$. Each irreducible representation $S^λ$ of $W$ corresponds to a standard module $M(λ)$ for $\HH$. This paper deals with the infinite family $G(r,1,n)$ of complex reflection groups; our goal is to study the standard modules using a commutative subalgebra $\ttt$ of $\HH$ discovered by Dunkl and Opdam. In this case, the irreducible $W$-modules are indexed by certain sequences $λ$ of partitions. We first show that $\ttt$ acts in an upper triangular fashion on each standard module $M(λ)$, with eigenvalues determined by the combinatorics of the set of standard tableaux on $λ$. As a consequence, we construct a basis for $M(λ)$ consisting of orthogonal functions on $\CC^n$ with values in the representation $S^λ$. For $G(1,1,n)$ with $λ=(n)$ these functions are the non-symmetric Jack polynomials. We use intertwining operators to deduce a norm formula for our orthogonal functions and give an explicit combinatorial description of the lattice of submodules of $M(λ)$ in the case in which the orthogonal functions are all well-defined.
The $p$-modular descent algebras
Published in Algebr. Represent. Theory 5:101-113 (2002) • Search Publication
The concept of descent algebras over a field of characteristic zero is extended to define descent algebras over a field of prime characteristic. Some basic algebraic structure of the latter, including its radical and irreducible modules, is then determined. The decomposition matrix of the descent algebras of Coxeter group types $A$, $B$, and $D$ are calculated, and used to derive a description of the decomposition matrix of an arbitrary descent algebra. The Cartan matrix of a variety of descent algebras over a finite field is then obtained.

Leonard triples and hypercubes
Let $V$ denote a vector space over C with finite positive dimension. By a {\em Leonard triple} on $V$ we mean an ordered triple of linear operators on $V$ such that for each of these operators there exists a basis of $V$ with respect to which the matrix representing that operator is diagonal and the matrices representing the other two operators are irreducible tridiagonal. Let $D$ denote a positive integer and let $Q_D$ denote the graph of the $D$-dimensional hypercube. Let $X$ denote the vertex set of $Q_D$ and let $A$ denote the adjacency matrix of $Q_D$. Fix $x \in X$ and let $A^*$ denote the corresponding dual adjacency matrix. Let $T$ denote the subalgebra of $Mat_X(C)$ generated by $A, A^*$. We refer to $T$ as the {\em Terwilliger algebra of} $Q_D$ {\em with respect to} $x$. The matrices $A$ and $A^*$ are related by the fact that $2 \im A = A^* A^e - A^e A^*$ and $2 \im A^* = A^e A - A A^e$, where $2 \im A^e = A A^* - A^* A$ and $\im^2=-1$. We show that the triple $A$, $A^*$, $A^e$ acts on each irreducible $T$-module as a Leonard triple. We give a detailed description of these Leonard triples.

Paths for Z_k parafermionic models
Published in Lett.Math.Phys.81:211-226,2007 • View PublicationBIB
We present a simple bijection between restricted (Bressoud) lattice paths and RSOS paths in regime II. Both types of paths describe states in Z_k parafermionic irreducible modules. The bijection implies a direct correspondence between a RSOS path and a parafermionic state in a quasi-particle basis.
