Enumerating maximal tatami mat coverings of square grids with $v$ vertical dominoes
We enumerate a certain class of monomino-domino coverings of square grids, which conform to the \emph{tatami} restriction; no four tiles meet. Let $\mathbf T_{n}$ be the set of monomino-domino tatami coverings of the $n\times n$ grid with the maximum number, $n$, of monominoes, oriented so that they have a monomino in each of the top left and top right corners. We give an algorithm for exhaustively generating the coverings in $\mathbf T_{n}$ with exactly $v$ vertical dominoes in constant amortized time, and an explicit formula for counting them. The polynomial that generates these counts has the factorisation {align*} P_n(z)\prod_{j\ge 1} S_{\lfloor \frac{n-2}{2^j} \rfloor}(z), {align*} where $S_n(z) = \prod_{i=1}^{n} (1 + z^i)$, and $P_n(z)$ is an irreducible polynomial, at least for ${1 < n < 200}$. We present some compelling properties and conjectures about $P_n(z)$. For example $P_n(1) = n2^{ν(n-2)-1}$ for all $n \ge 2$, where $ν(n)$ is the number of 1s in the binary representation of $n$ and deg$(P_n(z)) = \sum_{k=1}^{n-2} Od(k)$, where $Od(k)$ is the largest odd divisor of $k$.

Standard multipartitions and a combinatorial affine Schur-Weyl duality
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of standard multipartitions and establish a one-to-one correspondence between standard multipartitions and irreducible representations with integral weights for the affine Hecke algebra of type A with a parameter q which is not a root of unity. We then extend the correspondence to all Kleshchev multipartitions for Ariki-Koike algebras of integral type. By the affine Schur--Weyl duality, we further extend this to a correspondence between standard multipartitions and Drinfeld multipolynomials of integral type whose associated irreducible polynomial representations completely determine all irreducible polynomial representations for the quantum loop algebra. We will see, in particular, the notion of standard multipartitions gives rise to a combinatorial description of the affine Schur--Weyl duality in terms of a column-reading vs. row reading of residues of a multipartition.

On irreducible polynomials over finite fields

For n=1,2,3,... let N_n(q) denote the number of monic irreducible polynomials over the finite field F_q. We mainly show that the sequence N_n(q)^{1/n} (n>e^{3+7/(q-1)^2}) is strictly increasing and the sequence N_{n+1}(q)^{1/(n+1)}/N_n(q)^{1/n} (n>=5.835*10^{14}) is strictly decreasing. We also prove that if q>8 then N_{n+1}(q)/N_n(q) (n=1,2,3,...) is strictly increasing.

We generalize Fomin and Zelevinsky's cluster algebras by allowing exchange polynomials to be arbitrary irreducible polynomials, rather than binomials.
Mixed Discriminants
Published • View PublicationBIB
The mixed discriminant of n Laurent polynomials in n variables is the irreducible polynomial in the coefficients which vanishes whenever two of the roots coincide. The Cayley trick expresses the mixed discriminant as an A-discriminant. We show that the degree of the mixed discriminant is a piecewise linear function in the Plucker coordinates of a mixed Grassmannian. An explicit degree formula is given for the case of plane curves.

On integer radii coin representations of the wheel graph
A {\em flower} is a coin graph representation of the wheel graph. A {\em petal} of the wheel graph is an edge to the center vertex. In this paper we investigate flowers whose coins have integer radii. For an $n$-petaled flower we show there is a unique irreducible polynomial $P_n$ in $n$ variables over the integers $\ints$, the affine variety of which contains the cosines of the internal angles formed by the petals of the flower. We also establish a recursion that these irreducible polynomials satisfy. Using the polynomials $P_n$, we develop a parameterization for all the integer radii of the coins of the 3-petal flower.

Generating series for irreducible polynomials over finite fields

We count the number of irreducible polynomials in several variables of a given degree over a finite field. The results are expressed in terms of a generating series, an exact formula and an asymptotic approximation. We also consider the case of the multi-degree and the case of indecomposable polynomials.

Green-Tao theorem in function fields
We adapt the proof of the Green-Tao theorem on arithmetic progressions in primes to the setting of polynomials over a finite field, to show that for every $k$, the irreducible polynomials in $\mathbf{F}_q[t]$ contain configurations of the form $\{f+ Pg : \d(P)<k \}, g \neq 0$.

Quadratic Binomial APN Functions and Absolutely Irreducible Polynomials
We show that many quadratic binomial functions on a finite field of characteristic 2 are not APN infinitely often. This is of interest in the light of recent discoveries of new families of quadratic binomial APN functions. The proof uses the Weil bound from algebraic geometry.

Nonstandard linear recurring sequence subgroups in finite fields and automorphisms of cyclic codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $q=p^r$ be a prime power, and let $f(x)=x^m-\gs_{m-1}x^{m-1}- >...-\gs_1x-\gs_0$ be an irreducible polynomial over the finite field $\GF(q)$ of size $q$. A zero $ξ$ of $f$ is called {\em nonstandard (of degree $m$) over $\GF(q)$} if the recurrence relation $u_m=\gs_{m-1}u_{m-1} + ... + \gs_1u_1+\gs_0u_0$ with characteristic polynomial $f$ can generate the powers of $ξ$ in a nontrivial way, that is, with $u_0=1$ and $f(u_1)\neq 0$. In 2003, Brison and Nogueira asked for a characterisation of all nonstandard cases in the case $m=2$, and solved this problem for $q$ a prime, and later for $q=p^r$ with $r\leq4$. In this paper, we first show that classifying nonstandard finite field elements is equivalent to classifying those cyclic codes over $\GF(q)$ generated by a single zero that posses extra permutation automorphisms. Apart from two sporadic examples of degree 11 over $\GF(2)$ and of degree 5 over $\GF(3)$, related to the Golay codes, there exist two classes of examples of nonstandard finite field elements. One of these classes (type I) involves irreducible polynomials $f$ of the form $f(x)=x^m-f_0$, and is well-understood. The other class (type II) can be obtained from a primitive element in some subfield by a process that we call extension and lifting. We will use the known classification of the subgroups of $\PGL(2,q)$ in combination with a recent result by Brison and Nogueira to show that a nonstandard element of degree two over $\GF(q)$ necessarily is of type I or type II, thus solving completely the classification problem for the case $m=2$.

The divisibility modulo 24 of Kloosterman sums on $GF(2^m)$, $m$ even
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent work by Charpin, Helleseth, and Zinoviev Kloosterman sums $K(a)$ over a finite field $\F_{2^m}$ were evaluated modulo 24 in the case $m$ odd, and the number of those $a$ giving the same value for $K(a)$ modulo 24 was given. In this paper the same is done in the case $m$ even. The key techniques used in this paper are different from those used in the aforementioned work. In particular, we exploit recent results on the number of irreducible polynomials with prescribed coefficients.

On tensor products of polynomial representations

We determine the necessary and sufficient combinatorial conditions for which the tensor product of two irreducible polynomial representations of $GL(n,\mathbb{C})$ is isomorphic to another. As a consequence we discover families of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients that are non-zero, and a condition on Schur non-negativity.

Kloosterman sums, elliptic curves, and irreducible polynomials with prescribed trace and norm
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\F_q$ ($q=p^r$) be a finite field. In this paper the number of irreducible polynomials of degree $m$ in $\F_q[x]$ with prescribed trace and norm coefficients is calculated in certain special cases and a general bound for that number is obtained improving the bound by Wan if $m$ is small compared to $q$. As a corollary, sharp bounds are obtained for the number of elements in $\F_{q^3}$ with prescribed trace and norm over $\F_q$ improving the estimates by Katz in this special case. Moreover, a characterization of Kloosterman sums over $\F_{2^r}$ divisible by three is given generalizing the earlier result by Charpin, Helleseth, and Zinoviev obtained only in the case $r$ odd. Finally, a new simple proof for the value distribution of a Kloosterman sum over the field $\F_{3^r}$, first proved by Katz and Livne, is given.

Representations of Yangians associated with skew Young diagrams
Published in Proceedings of the ICM, Beijing 2002, vol. 2, 643--654 • Search Publication
The Yangian of the Lie algebra $gl_N$ has a distinguished family of irreducible finite-dimensional representations, called elementary representations. They are parametrized by pairs, consisting of a skew Young diagram and a complex number. Each of these representations has an explicit realization, it extends the classical realization of the irreducible polynomial representations of $gl_N$ by means of the Young symmetrizers. We explicitly construct analogues of these elementary representations for the twisted Yangian, which corresponds to the Lie algebra $so_N$. Our construction provides solutions to several open problems in the classical representation theory. In particular, we obtain analogues of the Young symmetrizers for the Brauer centralizer algebra.
