Transition functions of diffusion processes with the Jack parameter on the Thoma simplex
Published in Functional Analysis and Its Applications, 54(2), 118-134, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
The paper deals with a three-dimensional family of diffusion processes on an infinite-dimensional simplex. These processes were constructed by Borodin and Olshanski (arXiv:0706.1034; arXiv:0902.3395), and they include, as limit objects, the Ethier-Kurtz's infinitely-many-neutral-allels diffusion model (1981) and its extension found by Petrov (arXiv:0708.1930). Each process X from our family possesses a symmetrising measure M. Our main result is that the transition function of X has continuous density with respect to M. This is a generalization of earlier results due to Ethier (1992) and to Feng, Sun, Wang, and Xu (2011). Our proof substantially uses a special basis in the algebra of symmetric functions related to Laguerre polynomials.

On a class of polynomials connected to Bell polynomials
In this paper, we study a class of sequences of polynomials linked to the sequence of Bell polynomials. Some sequences of this class have applications on the theory of hyperbolic differential equations and other sequences generalize Laguerre polynomials and associated Lah polynomials. We discuss, for these polynomials, their explicit expressions, relations to the successive derivatives of a given function, real zeros and recurrence relations. Some known results are significantly simplified.

Product formulas on posets, Wick products, and a correction for the $q$-Poisson process
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an example showing that the product and linearization formulas for the Wick product versions of the $q$-Charlier polynomials in (Anshelevich 2004) are incorrect. Next, we observe that the relation between monomials and several families of Wick polynomials is governed by "incomplete" versions of familiar posets. We compute Möbius functions for these posets, and prove a general poset product formula. These provide new proofs and new inversion and product formulas for Wick product versions of Hermite, Chebyshev, Charlier, free Charlier, and Laguerre polynomials. By different methods, we prove inversion formulas for the Wick product versions of the free Meixner polynomials.

On sequences of polynomials arising from graph invariants
Published • View PublicationBIB
Graph polynomials are deemed useful if they give rise to algebraic characterizations of various graph properties, and their evaluations encode many other graph invariants. Algebraic: The complete graphs $K_n$ and the complete bipartite graphs $K_{n,n}$ can be characterized as those graphs whose matching polynomials satisfy a certain recurrence relations and are related to the Hermite and Laguerre polynomials. An encoded graph invariant: The absolute value of the chromatic polynomial $χ(G,X)$ of a graph $G$ evaluated at $-1$ counts the number of acyclic orientations of $G$. In this paper we prove a general theorem on graph families which are characterized by families of polynomials satisfying linear recurrence relations. This gives infinitely many instances similar to the characterization of $K_{n,n}$. We also show where to use, instead of the Hermite and Laguerre polynomials, linear recurrence relations where the coefficients do not depend on $n$. Finally, we discuss the distinctive power of graph polynomials in specific form.

Lagrange inversion formula, Laguerre polynomials and the free unitary Brownian motion
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is devoted to the computations of some relevant quantities associated with the free unitary Brownian motion. Using the Lagrange inversion formula, we first derive an explicit expression for its alternating star cumulants of even lengths and relate them to those having odd lengths by means of a summation formula for the free cumulants with product as entries. Next, we use again this formula together with a generating series for Laguerre polynomials in order to compute the Taylor coefficients of the reciprocal of the $R$-transform of the free Jacobi process associated with a single projection of rank $1/2$ and those of the $S$-transform as well. This generating series lead also to the Taylor expansions of the Schur function of the spectral distribution of the free unitary Brownian motion and of its first iterate.

Plane partitions with bounded size of parts and biorthogonal polynomials
Nice formulae for plane partitions with bounded size of parts (or boxed plane partitions), which generalize the norm-trace generating function by Stanley and the trace generating function by Gansner, are exhibited. The derivation of the nice formulae is based on lattice path combinatorics of biorthogonal polynomials, especially of the little $q$-Laguerre polynomials and a generalization of the little $q$-Laguerre polynomials. A summation formula which generalizes the $q$-Chu-Vandermonde identity is also shown and utilized to prove the orthogonality of the generalized little $q$-Laguerre polynomials.

Comments on "New generating relations for products of two Laguerre polynomials"
By utilizing a two-dimensional extension of a very general series transform given by Bailey, Exton [Indian J. pure appl. Math. 24 (6) (1993), 401-408] deduced a very general double generating relation of a product of a pair of Laguerre polynomials and obtained a number of useful relations with elementary functions, Bessel functions, Hermite polynomials and single series expansions of pairs of Laguerre polynomials. Unfortunately, some of the results given by Exon contain errors and thus this is the aim of this short note to provide the corrected form of these results.

Asymptotic properties of biorthogonal polynomials systems related to Hermite and Laguerre polynomials
In this paper, the structures to a family of biorthogonal polynomials that approximate to the Hermite and Generalized Laguerre polynomials are discussed respectively. Therefore, the asymptotic relation between several orthogonal polynomials and combinatorial polynomials are derived from the systems, which in turn verify the Askey scheme of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials. As the applications of these properties, the asymptotic representations of the generalized Buchholz, Laguerre, Ultraspherical(Gegenbauer), Bernoulli, Euler, Meixner and Meixner-Pllaczekare polynomials are derived from the theorems directly. The relationship between Bernoulli and Euler polynomials are shown as a special case of the characterization theorem of the Appell sequence generated by $α$ scaling functions.

The Combinatorics of Associated Laguerre Polynomials
Published in SIGMA 11 (2015), 039, 12 pages • View PublicationBIB
The explicit double sum for the associated Laguerre polynomials is derived combinatorially. The moments are described using certain statistics on permutations and permutation tableaux. Another derivation of the double sum is provided using only the moment generating function.

New Extension of Unified Family of Apostol-Type of Polynomials and Numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this paper is to introduce and investigate a new unification of unified family of Apostol-type polynomials and numbers based on results given in [24] and [25]. Also, we derive some properties for these polynomials and obtain some relationships between the Jacobi polynomials, Laguerre polynomials, Hermite polynomials, Stirling numbers and some other types of generalized polynomials.

Counting derangements and Nash equilibria
Published • View PublicationBIB
The maximal number of totally mixed Nash equilibria in games of several players equals the number of block derangements, as proved by McKelvey and McLennan. On the other hand, counting the derangements is a well studied problem. The numbers are identified as linearization coefficients for Laguerre polynomials. MacMahon derived a generating function for them as an application of his master theorem. This article relates the algebraic, combinatorial and game-theoretic problems that were not connected before. New recurrence relations, hypergeometric formulas and asymptotics for the derangement counts are derived. An upper bound for the total number of all Nash equilibria is given.

Counting words with Laguerre series
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop a method for counting words subject to various restrictions by finding a combinatorial interpretation for a product of weighted sums of Laguerre polynomials with parameter α= -1. We describe how such a series can be computed by finding an appropriate ordinary generating function and applying a certain transformation. We use this technique to find the generating function for the number of k-ary words avoiding any vincular pattern that has only ones, as well as words cyclically avoiding vincular patterns with only ones whose runs of ones between dashes are all of equal length.

Mellin Transforms of the Generalized Fractional Integrals and Derivatives
Published in Applied Mathematics and Computation 257 (2015) 566-580 • View PublicationBIB
We obtain the Mellin transforms of the generalized fractional integrals and derivatives that generalize the Riemann-Liouville and the Hadamard fractional integrals and derivatives. We also obtain interesting results, which combine generalized $δ_{r,m}$ operators with generalized Stirling numbers and Lah numbers. For example, we show that $δ_{1,1}$ corresponds to the Stirling numbers of the $2^{nd}$ kind and $δ_{2,1}$ corresponds to the unsigned Lah numbers. Further, we show that the two operators $δ_{r,m}$ and $δ_{m,r}$, $r,m\in\mathbb{N}$, generate the same sequence given by the recurrence relation \[ S(n,k)=\sum_{i=0}^r \big(m+(m-r)(n-2)+k-i-1\big)_{r-i}\binom{r}{i} S(n-1,k-i), \;\; 0< k\leq n, \] with $S(0,0)=1$ and $S(n,0)=S(n,k)=0$ for $n>0$ and $1+min\{r,m\}(n-1) < k $ or $k\leq 0$. Finally, we define a new class of sequences for $r \in \{\frac{1}{3}, \frac{1}{4}, \frac{1}{5}, \frac{1}{6}, ...\}$ and in turn show that $δ_{\frac{1}{2},1}$ corresponds to the generalized Laguerre polynomials.

The integral representation of the Hadamard product of two functions is used to prove several Euler-type series transformation formulas. As applications we obtain three binomial identities involving harmonic numbers and an identity for the Laguerre polynomials. We also evaluate in a closed form certain power series with harmonic numbers

Shifted Jacobi polynomials and Delannoy numbers
We express a weighted generalization of the Delannoy numbers in terms of shifted Jacobi polynomials. A specialization of our formulas extends a relation between the central Delannoy numbers and Legendre polynomials, observed over 50 years ago, to all Delannoy numbers and certain Jacobi polynomials. Another specialization provides a weighted lattice path enumeration model for shifted Jacobi polynomials, we use this to present a new combinatorial proof of the orthogonality of Jacobi polynomials with natural number parameters. The proof relates the orthogonality of these polynomials to the orthogonality of (generalized) Laguerre polynomials, as they arise in the theory of rook polynomials. We provide a combinatorial proof for the orthogonality of certain Romanovski-Jacobi polynomials with zero first parameter and negative integer second parameter, considered as an initial segment of the list of similarly transformed Jacobi polynomials with the same parameters. We observe that for an odd second parameter one more polynomial may be added to this finite orthogonal polynomial sequence than what was predicted by a classical result of Askey and Romanovski. The remaining transformed Jacobi polynomials in the sequence are either equal to the already listed Romanovski-Jacobi polynomials or monomial multiples of similarly transformed Jacobi polynomials with a positive second parameter. We provide expressions for an analogous weighted generalization of the Schröder numbers in terms of the Jacobi polynomials, and use this model, together with a result of Mansour and Sun, to express the Narayana polynomials in terms of shifted Jacobi polynomials.

Meixner polynomials of the second kind and quantum algebras representing su(1,1)

We show how Viennot's combinatorial theory of orthogonal polynomials may be used to generalize some recent results of Sukumar and Hodges on the matrix entries in powers of certain operators in a representation of su(1,1). Our results link these calculations to finding the moments and inverse polynomial coefficients of certain Laguerre polynomials and Meixner polynomials of the second kind. As an immediate consequence of results by Koelink, Groenevelt and Van Der Jeugt, for the related operators, substitutions into essentially the same Laguerre polynomials and Meixner polynomials of the second kind may be used to express their eigenvectors. Our combinatorial approach explains and generalizes this "coincidence".

Higher order matching polynomials and d-orthogonality
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, vol 46, no 1-4, January 2011, pp 226-246 • View PublicationBIB
We show combinatorially that the higher-order matching polynomials of several families of graphs are d-orthogonal polynomials. The matching polynomial of a graph is a generating function for coverings of a graph by disjoint edges; the higher-order matching polynomial corresponds to coverings by paths. Several families of classical orthogonal polynomials -- the Chebyshev, Hermite, and Laguerre polynomials -- can be interpreted as matching polynomials of paths, cycles, complete graphs, and complete bipartite graphs. The notion of d-orthogonality is a generalization of the usual idea of orthogonality for polynomials and we use sign-reversing involutions to show that the higher-order Chebyshev (first and second kinds), Hermite, and Laguerre polynomials are d-orthogonal. We also investigate the moments and find generating functions of those polynomials.

The Combinatorics of Al-Salam-Chihara $q$-Laguerre polynomials

We describe various aspects of the Al-Salam-Chihara $q$-Laguerre polynomials. These include combinatorial descriptions of the polynomials, the moments, the orthogonality relation and a combinatorial interpretation of the linearization coefficients. It is remarkable that the corresponding moment sequence appears also in the recent work of Postnikov and Williams on enumeration of totally positive Grassmann cells.
Motzkin numbers, central trinomial coefficients and hybrid polynomials

We show that the formalism of hybrid polynomials, interpolating between Hermite and Laguerre polynomials, is very useful in the study of Motzkin numbers and central trinomial coefficients. These sequences are identified as special values of hybrid polynomials, a fact which we use to derive their generalized forms and new identities satisfied by them.

On an identity due to ((Bump and Diaconis) and (Tracy and Widom))
Published in Canadian Math. Bulletin 54 (2011) no. 2, 255-269 • View PublicationBIB
A classical question for a Toeplitz matrix with given symbol is to compute asymptotics for the determinants of its reductions to finite rank. One can also consider how those asymptotics are affected when shifting an initial set of rows and columns (or, equivalently, asymptotics of their minors). Bump and Diaconis (Toeplitz minors, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 97 (2002), pp. 252--271) obtained a formula for such shifts involving Laguerre polynomials and sums over symmetric groups. They also showed how the Heine identity extends for such minors, which makes this question relevant to Random Matrix Theory. Independently, Tracy and Widom (On the limit of some Toeplitz-like determinants, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 23 (2002), pp. 1194--1196) used the Wiener-Hopf factorization to express those shifts in terms of products of infinite matrices. We show directly why those two expressions are equal and uncover some structure in both formulas that was unknown to their authors. We introduce a mysterious differential operator on symmetric functions that is very similar to vertex operators. We show that the Bump-Diaconis-Tracy- Widom identity is a differentiated version of the classical Jacobi-Trudi identity.
