Largest integral simplices with one interior integral point: Solution of Hensley's conjecture and related results

For each dimension $d$, $d$-dimensional integral simplices with exactly one interior integral point have bounded volume. This was first shown by Hensley. Explicit volume bounds were determined by Hensley, Lagarias and Ziegler, Pikhurko, and Averkov. In this paper we determine the exact upper volume bound for such simplices and characterize the volume-maximizing simplices. We also determine the sharp upper bound on the coefficient of asymmetry of an integral polytope with a single interior integral point. This result confirms a conjecture of Hensley from 1983. Moreover, for an integral simplex with precisely one interior integral point, we give bounds on the volumes of its faces, the barycentric coordinates of the interior integral point and its number of integral points. Furthermore, we prove a bound on the lattice diameter of integral polytopes with a fixed number of interior integral points. The presented results have applications in toric geometry and in integer optimization.
Invariants for critical dimension groups and permutation-Hermite equivalence
Motivated by classification, up to order isomorphism, of some dense subgroups of Euclidean space that are free of minimal rank, we obtain apparently new invariants for an equivalence relation (intermediate between Hermite and Smith) on integer matrices. These then participate in the classification of the dense subgroups. The same equivalence relation has appeared before, in the classification of lattice simplices. We discuss this equivalence relation (called {\it permutation-Hermite}), obtain fairly fine invariants for it, and have density results, and some formulas counting the numbers of equivalence classes for fixed determinant.
Incomparable copies of a poset in the Boolean lattice

Let $B_n$ be the poset generated by the subsets of $[n]$ with the inclusion as relation and let $P$ be a finite poset. We want to embed $P$ into $B_n$ as many times as possible such that the subsets in different copies are incomparable. The maximum number of such embeddings is asymptotically determined for all finite posets $P$ as $\frac{n \choose \lfloor n/2\rfloor}{M(P)}$, where $M(P)$ denotes the minimal size of the convex hull of a copy of $P$. We discuss both weak and strong (induced) embeddings.

We are interested in maximizing the number of pairwise unrelated copies of a poset $P$ in the family of all subsets of $[n]$. We prove that for any $P$ the maximum number of unrelated copies of $P$ is asymptotic to a constant times the largest binomial coefficient. Moreover, the constant has the form $\frac{1}{c(P)}$, where $c(P)$ is the size of the smallest convex closure over all embeddings of $P$ into the Boolean lattice.

In 2003, Ciucu presented a unified way to enumerate tilings of lattice regions by using a certain Reduction Theorem (Ciucu, Perfect Matchings and Perfect Powers, Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 2003). In this paper we continue this line of work by investigating new families of lattice regions whose tilings are enumerated by perfect powers or products of several perfect powers. We prove a multi-parameter generalization of Bo-Yin Yang's theorem on fortresses (B.-Y. Yang, Ph.D. thesis, Department of Mathematics, MIT, MA, 1991). On the square lattice with zigzag paths, we consider two particular families of regions whose numbers of tilings are always a power of 3 or twice a power of 3. The latter result provides a new proof for a conjecture of Matt Blum first proved by Ciucu. We also consider several new lattices obtained by periodically applying two simple subgraph replacement rules to the square lattice. On some of those lattices, we get new families of regions whose numbers of tilings are given by products of several perfect powers. In addition, we prove a simple product formula for the number of tilings of a certain family of regions on a variant of the triangular lattice.
Convexity in partial cubes: the hull number

We prove that the combinatorial optimization problem of determining the hull number of a partial cube is NP-complete. This makes partial cubes the minimal graph class for which NP-completeness of this problem is known and improves some earlier results in the literature.
On the other hand we provide a polynomial-time algorithm to determine the hull number of planar partial cube quadrangulations.
Instances of the hull number problem for partial cubes described include poset dimension and hitting sets for interiors of curves in the plane.
To obtain the above results, we investigate convexity in partial cubes and characterize these graphs in terms of their lattice of convex subgraphs, improving a theorem of Handa. Furthermore we provide a topological representation theorem for planar partial cubes, generalizing a result of Fukuda and Handa about rank three oriented matroids.

We consider the poset of weighted partitions $Π_n^w$, introduced by Dotsenko and Khoroshkin in their study of a certain pair of dual operads. The maximal intervals of $Π_n^w$ provide a generalization of the lattice $Π_n$ of partitions, which we show possesses many of the well-known properties of $Π_n$. In particular, we prove these intervals are EL-shellable, we show that the Möbius invariant of each maximal interval is given up to sign by the number of rooted trees on on node set $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ having a fixed number of descents, we find combinatorial bases for homology and cohomology, and we give an explicit sign twisted $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module isomorphism from cohomology to the multilinear component of the free Lie algebra with two compatible brackets. We also show that the characteristic polynomial of $Π_n^w$ has a nice factorization analogous to that of $Π_n$.
Lattice polytopes, finite abelian subgroups in $\SL(n,\C)$ and coding theory
We consider $d$-dimensional lattice polytopes $Δ$ with $h^*$-polynomial $h^*_Δ=1+h_k^*t^k$ for $1<k<(d+1)/2$ and relate them to some abelian subgroups of $\SL_{d+1}(\C)$ of order $1+h_k^*=p^r$ where $p$ is a prime number. These subgroups can be investigate by means of coding theory as special linear constant weight codes in $\F_p^{d+1}$. If $p =2$, then the classication of these codes and corresponding lattice polytopes can be obtained using a theorem of Bonisoli. If $p > 2$, the main technical tool in the classification of these linear codes is the non-vanishing theorem for generalized Bernoulli numbers $B_{1,χ}^{(r)}$ associated with odd characters $χ:\F_q^*\to\C^*$ where $q=p^r$. Our result implies a complete classification of all lattice polytopes whose $h^*$-polynomial is a binomial.

We solve and generalize an open problem posted by James Propp (Problem 16 in New Perspectives in Geometric Combinatorics, Cambridge University Press, 1999) on the number of tilings of quasi-hexagonal regions on the square lattice with every third diagonal drawn in. We also obtain a generalization of Douglas' Theorem on the number of tilings of a family of regions of the square lattice with every second diagonal drawn in.

Modular lattices, introduced by R. Dedekind, are an important subvariety of lattices that includes all distributive lattices. Heitzig and Reinhold developed an algorithm to enumerate, up to isomorphism, all finite lattices up to size 18. Here we adapt and improve this algorithm to construct and count modular lattices up to size 24, semimodular lattices up to size 22, and lattices of size 19. We also show that $2^{n-3}$ is a lower bound for the number of nonisomorphic modular lattices of size $n$.

In their 2002 paper, Ciucu and Krattenthaler proved several product formulas for the number of lozenge tilings of various regions obtained from a centrally symmetric hexagon on the triangular lattice by removing maximal staircase regions from two non-adjacent corners. For the case when the staircases are removed from adjacent corners of the hexagon, they presented two conjectural formulas, whose proofs, as they remarked, seemed at the time "a formidable task". In this paper we prove those two conjectures. Our proofs proceed by first generalizing the conjectures, and then proving them by induction, using Kuo's graphical condensation method.
The Koszul property of pinched Veronese varieties
Let $K$ be an arbitrary field. Let $n,d \ge 2$ be positive integers. Let $V(n,d)$ be the set of all lattice points $\mathbf b = (b_1, ..., b_n)$ in ${\mathbb N}^n$ such that $\sum_{i=1}^n b_i = d$. Let $Γ= V(n,d) \setminus \{ \mathbf a \}$ for some element $\mathbf a \in V(n,d)$. In this paper we prove that the semigroup ring $K[Γ]$ is Koszul unless $d \ge 3$ and ${\mathbf a} = (0, ...,0, 2, d-2)$ or one of its permutations. This generalizes results of Caviglia, Conca, and Tancer.
Complete Valuations on Finite Distributive Lattices
We characterize the finite distributive lattices which admit a complete valuation, that is bijective over a set of consecutive natural numbers, with the additional conditions of completeness (Definition 2.3). We prove that such lattices are downset lattices of finite posets of dimension at most two, and determine a realizer through a recursive relation between weights on the poset associated to valuation. The relation shows that the weights count chains in the complementary poset. Conversely, we prove that a valuation defined on a poset of dimension at most two, through the weight function which counts chains in the complementary poset, is complete.

Gessel walks are lattice paths confined to the quarter plane that start at the origin and consist of unit steps going either West, East, South-West or North-East. In 2001, Ira Gessel conjectured a nice closed-form expression for the number of Gessel walks ending at the origin. In 2008, Kauers, Koutschan and Zeilberger gave a computer-aided proof of this conjecture. The same year, Bostan and Kauers showed, again using computer algebra tools, that the complete generating function of Gessel walks is algebraic. In this article we propose the first "human proofs" of these results. They are derived from a new expression for the generating function of Gessel walks in terms of Weierstrass zeta functions.

As a discrete analog to Minkowski's theorem on convex bodies, Wills conjectured that the Ehrhart coefficients of a centrally symmetric lattice polytope with exactly one interior lattice point are maximized by those of the cube of side length two. We discuss several counterexamples to this conjecture and, on the positive side, we identify a family of lattice polytopes that fulfill the claimed inequalities. This family is related to the recently introduced class of $l$-reflexive polytopes.
Automorphisms of decompositions

Harding showed that the direct product decompositions of many different types of structures, such as sets, groups, vector spaces, topological spaces, and relational structures, naturally form orthomodular posets. When applied to the direct product decompositions of a Hilbert space, this construction yields the familiar orthomodular lattice of closed subspaces of the Hilbert space.
In this note we consider orthomodular posets Fact X of decompositions of a finite set X. We consider the structure of these orthomodular posets, such as their size, shape, and connectedness, states, and begin a study of their automorphism groups in the context of the natural map Γfrom the group of permutations of X to the automorphism group of Fact X.
We show Γis an embedding except when |X| is prime or 4, and completely describe the situation when |X| has two or fewer prime factors, when |X|=8 and when |X|=27. The bulk of our effort lies in a series of combinatorial arguments to show Γis an isomorphism when |X|=27. We conjecture that this is the case whenever |X| has sufficiently many prime factors of sufficient size, and hope that our arguments here might be adapted to the general case.
The Strip-Decomposition of m-Dyck Paths
The $m$-Tamari lattices $\mathcal{T}_{n}^{(m)}$, introduced by Bergeron and Pr{é}ville-Ratelle, are defined as a poset of $m$-Dyck paths equipped with the generalized rotation order, and constitute a Fuss-Catalan generalization of the classical Tamari lattices $\mathcal{T}_{n}$. While for $\mathcal{T}_{n}$ many combinatorial realizations are known, to present there is no further combinatorial realization of $\mathcal{T}_{n}^{(m)}$. In this article, we introduce a certain decomposition of $m$-Dyck paths into $m$-tuples of Dyck paths, and after a certain modification of these $m$-tuples, we conjecture that the resulting $m$-tuples of Dyck paths realize $\mathcal{T}_{n}^{(m)}$ as an induced subposet of the $m$-fold direct product of $\mathcal{T}_{n}$ with itself. We are able to prove this conjecture for $n\leq 3$, and provide necessary conditions for $m$-tuples of Dyck paths to belong to this realization. However, for $n\geq 5$, no sufficient condition is known.
Towards m-Cambrian Lattices
For positive integers $m$ and $k$, we introduce a family of lattices $\mathcal{C}_{k}^{(m)}$ associated to the Cambrian lattice $\mathcal{C}_{k}$ of the dihedral group $I_{2}(k)$. We show that $\mathcal{C}_{k}^{(m)}$ satisfies some basic properties of a Fuss-Catalan generalization of $\mathcal{C}_{k}$, namely that $\mathcal{C}_{k}^{(1)}=\mathcal{C}_{k}$ and $\bigl\lvert\mathcal{C}_{k}^{(m)}\bigr\rvert=\mbox{Cat}^{(m)}\bigl(I_{2}(k)\bigr)$. Subsequently, we prove some structural and topological properties of these lattices---namely that they are trim and EL-shellable---which were known for $\mathcal{C}_{k}$ before. Remarkably, our construction coincides in the case $k=3$ with the $m$-Tamari lattice of parameter 3 due to Bergeron and Pr{é}ville-Ratelle. Eventually, we investigate this construction in the context of other Coxeter groups, in particular we conjecture that the lattice completion of the analogous construction for the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$ and the long cycle $(1\;2\;\ldots\;n)$ is isomorphic to the $m$-Tamari lattice of parameter $n$.
