Two Posets of Noncrossing Partitions Coming From Undesired Parking Spaces
Published in Revista Colombiana de Matemáticas 52 (2018), pages 65-86 • Search Publication
Consider the noncrossing set partitions of an $n$-element set which either do not contain the block $\{n-1,n\}$, or which do not contain the singleton block $\{n\}$ whenever $1$ and $n-1$ are in the same block. In this article we study the subposet of the noncrossing partition lattice induced by these elements, and show that it is a supersolvable lattice, and therefore lexicographically shellable. We give a combinatorial model for the NBB bases of this lattice and derive an explicit formula for the value of its Möbius function between least and greatest element. This work is motivated by a recent article by M. Bruce, M. Dougherty, M. Hlavacek, R. Kudo, and I. Nicolas, in which they introduce a subposet of the noncrossing partition lattice that is determined by parking functions with certain forbidden entries. In particular, they conjecture that the resulting poset always has a contractible order complex. We prove this conjecture by embedding their poset into ours, and showing that it inherits the lexicographic shellability.

Decomposition spaces in Combinatorics
A decomposition space (also called 2-Segal space) is a simplicial object satisfying an exactness condition weaker than the Segal condition: just as the Segal condition expresses composition, the new condition expresses decomposition. It is a general framework for incidence (co)algebras. In this contribution, after establishing a formula for the section coefficients, we survey a large supply of examples, emphasising the notion's firm roots in classical combinatorics. The first batch of examples, similar to binomial posets, serves to illustrate 2 key points: (1) the incidence algebra in question is realised directly from a decomposition space, without a reduction step, and reductions are often given by CULF functors; (2) at the objective level, the convolution algebra is a monoidal structure of species. We encounter the usual Cauchy product of species, the shuffle product of L-species, the Dirichlet product of arithmetic species, the Joyal-Street external product of q-species and the Morrison `Cauchy' product of q-species. In each case a power series representation results from taking cardinality. The external product of q-species exemplifies the fact that Waldhausen's S-construction on an abelian category is a decomposition space, yielding Hall algebras. The next class of examples includes Schmitt's chromatic Hopf algebra, the Faà di Bruno bialgebra, the Butcher-Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of trees and variations from operad theory. Similar structures on posets and directed graphs exemplify a general construction of decomposition spaces from directed restriction species. An appetiser on decomposition spaces of symmetric functions is included. We finish by computing the Möbius function in a few cases, and commenting on certain cancellations that occur in the process of taking cardinality, substantiating that these cancellations are not possible at the objective level.

The geometric lattice of embedded subsets
This work proposes an alternative approach to the so-called lattice of embedded subsets, which is included in the product of the subset and partition lattices of a finite set, and whose elements are pairs consisting of a subset and a partition where the former is a block of the latter. The lattice structure proposed in a recent contribution relies on ad-hoc definitions of both the join operator and the bottom element, while also including join-irreducible elements distinct from atoms. Conversely, here embedded subsets obtain through a closure operator defined over the product of the subset and partition lattices, where elements are generic pairs of a subset and a partition. Those such pairs that coincide with their closure are precisely embedded subsets, and since the Steinitz exchange axiom is also satisfied, what results is a geometric (hence atomic) lattice given by a simple matroid (or combinatorial geometry) included in the product of the subset and partition lattices (as the partition lattice itself is the polygon matroid defined on the edges of a complete graph). By focusing on its Möbius function, this geometric lattice of embedded subsets of a n-set is shown to be isomorphic to the lattice of partitions of a n+1-set.

Inverses of Bipartite Graphs
Published in Combinatorica (2017) • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a bipartite graph and its adjacency matrix $\mathbb A$. If $G$ has a unique perfect matching, then $\mathbb A$ has an inverse $\mathbb A^{-1}$ which is a symmetric integral matrix, and hence the adjacency matrix of a multigraph. The inverses of bipartite graphs with unique perfect matchings have a strong connection to Möbius functions of posets. In this note, we characterize all bipartite graphs with a unique perfect matching whose adjacency matrices have inverses diagonally similar to non-negative matrices, which settles an open problem of Godsil on inverses of bipartite graphs in [Godsil, Inverses of Trees, Combinatorica 5 (1985) 33-39].

A definite recursive relation and some statistical properties for Möbius function
An elementary recursive relation for M$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$bius function $μ(n)$ is introduced by two simple ways. With this recursive relation, $μ(n)$ can be calculated without directly knowing the factorization of the $n$. $μ(1) \sim μ(2 \times 10^7) $ are calculated recursively one by one. Based on these $2\times 10^7$ samples, the empirical probabilities of $μ(n)$ of taking $-1$, 0, and 1 in classic statistics are calculated and compared with the theoretical probabilities in number theory. The numerical consistency between these two kinds of probability show that $μ(n)$ could be seen as an independent random sequence when $n$ is large. The expectation and variance of the $μ(n)$ are $0$ and $6 n/ π^2$, respectively. Furthermore, we show that any conjecture of the Mertens type is false in probability sense, and present an upper bound for cumulative sums of $μ(n)$ with a certain probability.

Partial flag incidence algebras
The $n^{th}$ partial flag incidence algebra of a poset $P$ is the set of functions from $P^n$ to some ring which are zero on non-partial flag vectors. These partial flag incidence algebras for $n>2$ are not commutative, not unitary, and not associative. However, partial flag incidence algebras contain generalized zeta, delta, and Möbius functions which are finer and more delicate invariants than their classical analogues. We also study some generalized characteristic polynomials of posets which are not evaluations of Tutte polynomials and compute them for Boolean lattices. Motivation for this work came from studying the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials where partial flag Whitney numbers play a central role.
A Decomposition of Parking Functions by Undesired Spaces
Published in Electron. J. Comb. 23 (3) (2016) #P3.32 • View PublicationBIB
There is a well-known bijection between parking functions of a fixed length and maximal chains of the noncrossing partition lattice which we can use to associate to each set of parking functions a poset whose Hasse diagram is the union of the corresponding maximal chains. We introduce a decomposition of parking functions based on the largest number omitted and prove several theorems about the corresponding posets. In particular, they share properties with the noncrossing partition lattice such as local self-duality, a nice characterization of intervals, a readily computable Möbius function, and a symmetric chain decomposition. We also explore connections with order complexes, labeled Dyck paths, and rooted forests.

Decomposition spaces, incidence algebras and Möbius inversion III: the decomposition space of Möbius intervals
Published in Adv. Math. 334 (2018), 544-584 • View PublicationBIB
Decomposition spaces are simplicial $\infty$-groupoids subject to a certain exactness condition, needed to induce a coalgebra structure on the space of arrows. Conservative ULF functors (CULF) between decomposition spaces induce coalgebra homomorphisms. Suitable added finiteness conditions define the notion of Möbius decomposition space, a far-reaching generalisation of the notion of Möbius category of Leroux. In this paper, we show that the Lawvere-Menni Hopf algebra of Möbius intervals, which contains the universal Möbius function (but is not induced by a Möbius category), can be realised as the homotopy cardinality of a Möbius decomposition space $U$ of all Möbius intervals, and that in a certain sense $U$ is universal for Möbius decomposition spaces and CULF functors.

From the weak Bruhat order to crystal posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the ways in which fundamental properties of the weak Bruhat order on a Weyl group can be lifted (or not) to a corresponding highest weight crystal graph, viewed as a partially ordered set; the latter projects to the weak order via the key map. First, a crystal theoretic analogue of the statement that any two reduced expressions for the same Coxeter group element are related by Coxeter moves is proven for all lower intervals in a simply or doubly laced crystal. On the other hand, it is shown that no finite set of moves exists, even in type A, for arbitrary crystal graph intervals. In fact, it is shown that there are relations of arbitrarily high degree amongst crystal operators that are not implied by lower degree relations. Second, for crystals associated to Kac-Moody algebras it is shown for lower intervals that the Mobius function is always 0, 1, or -1, and in finite type this is also proven for upper intervals, with a precise formula given in each case. Moreover, the order complex for each of these intervals is proven to be homotopy equivalent to a ball or to a sphere of some dimension, despite often not being shellable. For general intervals, examples are constructed with arbitrarily large Mobius function, again even in type A. Any interval having Mobius function other than 0, 1, or -1 is shown to contain within it a relation amongst crystal operators that is not implied by the relations giving rise to the local structure of the crystal, making precise a tight relationship between the Mobius function and these somewhat unexpected relations appearing in crystals. New properties of the key map are also derived. The key is shown to be determined entirely by the edge-colored poset-theoretic structure of the crystal, and a recursive algorithm is given for calculating it.

Linear sequential dynamical systems, incidence algebras, and Möbius functions
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. 553 (2018), 270-291 • View PublicationBIB
A sequential dynamical system (SDS) consists of a graph, a set of local functions and an update schedule. A linear sequential dynamical system is an SDS whose local functions are linear. In this paper, we derive an explicit closed formula for any linear SDS as a synchronous dynamical system. We also show constructively, that any synchronous linear system can be expressed as a linear SDS, i.e. it can be written as a product of linear local functions. Furthermore, we study the connection between linear SDS and the incidence algebras of partially ordered sets (posets). Specifically, we show that the Möbius function of any poset can be computed via an SDS, whose graph is induced by the Hasse diagram of the poset. Finally, we prove a cut theorem for the Möbius functions of posets with respect to certain chain decompositions.

A new family of posets generalizing the weak order on some Coxeter groups
We construct a poset from a simple acyclic digraph together with a valuation on its vertices, and we compute the values of its Möbius function. We show that the weak order on Coxeter groups of type A, B, affine A, and the flag weak order on the wreath product $\mathbb{Z} \_r \wr S\_n$ introduced by Adin, Brenti and Roichman, are special instances of our construction. We conclude by associating a quasi-symmetric function to each element of these posets. In the $A$ and $\widetilde{A}$ cases, this function coincides respectively with the classical Stanley symmetric function, and with Lam's affine generalization.

The structure of the consecutive pattern poset
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, 2018 (7), 2099-2034 • View PublicationBIB
The consecutive pattern poset is the infinite partially ordered set of all permutations where $σ\leτ$ if $τ$ has a subsequence of adjacent entries in the same relative order as the entries of $σ$. We study the structure of the intervals in this poset from topological, poset-theoretic, and enumerative perspectives. In particular, we prove that all intervals are rank-unimodal and strongly Sperner, and we characterize disconnected and shellable intervals. We also show that most intervals are not shellable and have Möbius function equal to zero.

On comparability of bigrassmannian permutations
Let $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and $\mathfrak{B}_n$ denote the respective sets of ordinary and bigrassmannian (BG) permutations of order $n$, and let $(\mathfrak{S}_n,\leq)$ denote the Bruhat ordering permutation poset. We study the restricted poset $(\mathfrak{B}_n,\leq)$, first providing a simple criterion for comparability. This criterion is used to show that that the poset is connected, to enumerate the saturated chains between elements, and to enumerate the number of maximal elements below $r$ fixed elements. It also quickly produces formulas for $β(ω)$ ($α(ω)$ respectively), the number of BG permutations weakly below (weakly above respectively) a fixed $ω\in\mathfrak{B}_n$, and is used to compute the Möbius function on any interval in $\mathfrak{B}_n$. We then turn to a probabilistic study of $β=β(ω)$ ($α=α(ω)$ respectively) for the uniformly random $ω\in\mathfrak{B}_n$. We show that $α$ and $β$ are equidistributed, and that $β$ is of the same order as its expectation with high probability, but fails to concentrate about its mean. This latter fact derives from the limiting distribution of $β/n^3$. We also compute the probability that randomly chosen BG permutations form a 2- or 3-element multichain.

A Formula for the Möbius function of the Permutation Poset Based on a Topological Decomposition
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a two term formula for the Möbius function of intervals in the poset of all permutations, ordered by pattern containment. The first term in this formula is the number of so called normal occurrences of one permutation in another. Our definition of normal occurrences is similar to those that have appeared in several variations in the literature on the Möbius function of this and other posets, but simpler than most of them. The second term in the formula is complicated, but we conjecture that it equals zero for a significant proportion of intervals. We present some cases where the second term vanishes and others where it is nonzero. Computing the Möbius function recursively from its definition has exponential complexity, whereas the computation of the first term in our formula is polynomial and the exponential part is isolated to the second term, which seems to often vanish. We also present a result on the Möbius function of posets connected by a poset fibration.

Applications of Quotient Posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider the characteristic polynomial of not necessarily ranked posets. We do so by allowing the rank to be an arbitrary function from the poset to the nonnegative integers. We will prove two results showing that the characteristic polynomial of a poset has nonnegative integral roots. Our factorization theorems will then be used to show that any interval of the Tamari lattice has a characteristic polynomial which factors in this way. Blass and Sagan's result about LL lattices will also be shown to be a consequence of our factorization theorems. Finally we will use quotient posets to give unified proofs of some classic Möbius function results.

Vincular pattern posets and the Möbius function of the quasi-consecutive pattern poset
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce vincular pattern posets, then we consider in particular the quasi-consecutive pattern poset, which is defined by declaring $σ\leq τ$ whenever the permutation $τ$ contains an occurrence of the permutation $σ$ in which all the entries are adjacent in $τ$ except at most the first and the second. We investigate the Möbius function of the quasi-consecutive pattern poset and we completely determine it for those intervals $[σ,τ]$ such that $σ$ occurs precisely once in $τ$.

On homology of finite topological spaces
Published in Topology and its Applications 217 (2017), 1-19 • View PublicationBIB
We develop a new method to compute the homology groups of finite topological spaces (or equivalently of finite partially ordered sets) by means of spectral sequences giving a complete and simple description of the corresponding differentials. Our method proves to be powerful and involves far fewer computations than the standard one. We derive many applications of our technique which include a generalization of Hurewicz theorem for regular CW-complexes, results in homological Morse theory and formulas to compute the Möbius function of posets.

Möbius Polynomials of Face Posets of Convex Polytopes
Published in Communications in Algebra 2016 44(11):4945-4972 • View PublicationBIB
The Möbius polynomial is an invariant of ranked posets, closely related to the Möbius function. In this paper, we study the Möbius polynomial of face posets of convex polytopes. We present formulas for computing the Möbius polynomial of the face poset of a pyramid or a prism over an existing polytope, or of the gluing of two or more polytopes in terms of the Möbius polynomials of the original polytopes. We also present general formulas for calculating Möbius polynomials of face posets of simplicial polytopes and of Eulerian posets in terms of their $f$-vectors and some additional constraints.

Heaps and Two Exponential Structures

Take ${\sf Q}=({\sf Q}_1,{\sf Q}_2,\ldots)$ to be an exponential structure and $M(n)$ to be the number of minimal elements of ${\sf Q}_n$ where $M(0)=1$. Then a sequence of numbers $\{r_n({\sf Q}_n)\}_{n\ge 1}$ is defined by the equation \begin{eqnarray*} \sum_{n\ge 1}r_n({\sf Q}_n)\frac{z^n}{n!\,M(n)}=-\log(\sum_{n\ge 0}(-1)^n\frac{z^n}{n!\,M(n)}). \end{eqnarray*} Let $\bar{\sf Q}_n$ denote the poset ${\sf Q}_n$ with a $\hat{0}$ adjoined and let $\hat{1}$ denote the unique maximal element in the poset ${\sf Q}_n$. Furthermore, let $μ_{{\sf Q}_n}$ be the Möbius function on the poset $\bar{\sf Q}_n$. Stanley proved that $r_n({\sf Q}_n)=(-1)^nμ_{{\sf Q}_n}(\hat{0},\hat{1})$. This implies that the numbers $r_n({\sf Q}_n)$ are integers. In this paper, we study the cases ${\sf Q}_n=Π_n^{(r)}$ and ${\sf Q}_n={\sf Q}_n^{(r)}$ where $Π_n^{(r)}$ and ${\sf Q}_n^{(r)}$ are posets, respectively, of set partitions of $[rn]$ whose block sizes are divisible by $r$ and of $r$-partitions of $[n]$. In both cases we prove that $r_n(Π_n^{(r)})$ and $r_n({\sf Q}_n^{(r)})$ enumerate the pyramids by applying the Cartier-Foata monoid identity and further prove that $r_n(Π_n^{(r)})$ is the generalized Euler number $E_{rn-1}$ and that $r_n({\sf Q}_n^{(2)})$ is the number of complete non-ambiguous trees of size $2n-1$ by bijections. This gives a new proof of Welker's theorem that $r_n(Π_n^{(r)})=E_{rn-1}$ and implies the construction of $r$-dimensional complete non-ambiguous trees. As a bonus of applying the theory of heaps, we establish a bijection between the set of complete non-ambiguous forests and the set of pairs of permutations with no common rise. This answers an open question raised by Aval {\it et al.}.

Intervals of Permutations with a Fixed Number of Descents are Shellable
Published • View PublicationBIB
The set of all permutations, ordered by pattern containment, is a poset. We present an order isomorphism from the poset of permutations with a fixed number of descents to a certain poset of words with subword order. We use this bijection to show that intervals of permutations with a fixed number of descents are shellable, and we present a formula for the Möbius function of these intervals. We present an alternative proof for a result on the Möbius function of intervals $[1,π]$ such that $π$ has exactly one descent. We prove that if $π$ has exactly one descent and avoids 456123 and 356124, then the intervals $[1,π]$ have no nontrivial disconnected subintervals; we conjecture that these intervals are shellable.
