The diagonal graph
According to the O'Nan--Scott Theorem, a finite primitive permutation group either preserves a structure of one of three types (affine space, Cartesian lattice, or diagonal semilattice), or is almost simple. However, diagonal groups are a much larger class than those occurring in this theorem. For any positive integer $m$ and group $G$ (finite or infinite), there is a diagonal semilattice, a sub-semilattice of the lattice of partitions of a set $Ω$, whose automorphism group is the corresponding diagonal group. Moreover, there is a graph (the diagonal graph), bearing much the same relation to the diagonal semilattice and group as the Hamming graph does to the Cartesian lattice and the wreath product of symmetric groups.
Our purpose here, after a brief introduction to this semilattice and graph, is to establish some properties of this graph. The diagonal graph $Γ_D(G,m)$ is a Cayley graph for the group~$G^m$, and so is vertex-transitive. We establish its clique number in general and its chromatic number in most cases, with a conjecture about the chromatic number in the remaining cases. We compute the spectrum of the adjacency matrix of the graph, using a calculation of the Möbius function of the diagonal semilattice. We also compute some other graph parameters and symmetry properties of the graph.
We believe that this family of graphs will play a significant role in algebraic graph theory.
On the Möbius function of permutations under the pattern containment order

We study several aspects of the Möbius function, $μ[σ,π]$, on the poset of permutations under the pattern containment order.
First, we consider cases where the lower bound of the poset is indecomposable. We show that $μ[σ,π]$ can be computed by considering just the indecomposable permutations contained in the upper bound. We apply this to the case where the upper bound is an increasing oscillation, and give a method for computing the value of the Möbius function that only involves evaluating simple inequalities.
We then consider conditions on an interval which guarantee that the value of the Möbius function is zero. In particular, we show that if a permutation $π$ contains two intervals of length 2, which are not order-isomorphic to one another, then $μ[1,π] = 0$. This allows us to prove that the proportion of permutations of length $n$ with principal Möbius function equal to zero is asymptotically bounded below by $(1-1/e)^2 \ge 0.3995$. This is the first result determining the value of $μ[1,π]$ for an asymptotically positive proportion of permutations $π$.
Following this, we use ''2413-balloon'' permutations to show that the growth of the principal Möbius function on the permutation poset is exponential. This improves on previous work, which has shown that the growth is at least polynomial.
We then generalise 2413-balloon permutations, and find a recursion for the value of the principal Möbius function of these generalisations.
The holonomy Lie algebra of a matroid
We will start from the beginning and define a matroid and its Orlik-Solomon algebra and holonomy Lie algebra, but first we give some background from topology and cohomology. A (central) hyperplane arrangement is a finite number of subspaces of codimension one in a finite dimensional vector space over R, C or even finite fields. The space X which is the complement of the union of the hyperplanes has interesting properties. If you consider R^n the cohomology is however rather trivial, there is just an H^0, since X is a disjoint union of contractible sets. But it is not a trivial task to compute |H^0|. The way to do it is to consider the intersection lattice of the hyperplanes and compute its Möbius function. The result is that the number of components is the sum of the absolut values of the Möbius function (Zaslavsky 1975).

The partition lattice and noncrossing partition lattice are well studied objects in combinatorics. Given a graph $G$ on vertex set $\{1,2,\dots, n\}$, its bond lattice, $L_G$, is the subposet of the partition lattice formed by restricting to the partitions whose blocks induce connected subgraphs of $G$. In this article, we introduce a natural noncrossing analogue of the bond lattice, the noncrossing bond poset, $NC_G$, obtained by restricting to the noncrossing partitions of $L_G$.
Both the noncrossing partition lattice and the bond lattice have many nice combinatorial properties. We show that, for several families of graphs, the noncrossing bond poset also exhibits these properties. We present simple necessary and sufficient conditions on the graph to ensure the noncrossing bond poset is a lattice. Additionally, for several families of graphs, we give combinatorial descriptions of the Möbius function and characteristic polynomial of the noncrossing bond poset. These descriptions are in terms of a noncrossing analogue of non-broken circuit (NBC) sets of the graphs and can be thought of as a noncrossing version of Whitney's NBC theorem for the chromatic polynomial. We also consider the shellability and supersolvability of the noncrossing bond poset, providing sufficient conditions for both. We end with some open problems.

Let A be an alphabet and let F be a set of words with letters in A. We show that the sum of all words with letters in A with no consecutive subwords in F, as a formal power series in noncommuting variables, is the reciprocal of a series with all coefficients 0, 1 or -1. We also explain how this result is related to a result of Curtis Greene on lattices with Möbius function 0, 1, or -1.
Möbius Functions of Some Annular Noncrossing Objects
We present the Möbius functions of several posets of annular noncrossing objects, namely a self-dual extension of the annular noncrossing permutations, minimal length annular partitioned permutations, and annular noncrossing partitons.
The Möbius Function of the Affine Linear Group $\text{AGL}(1,\Bbb F_q)$
Let $\text{AGL}(1,\Bbb F_q)$ denote the affine linear group of dimension one over the finite field $\Bbb F_q$. We determine the Möbius function of the lattice of subgroups of $\text{AGL}(1,\Bbb F_q)$.

We initiate the study of the enumerative combinatorics of the intervals in the Dyck pattern poset. More specifically, we find some closed formulas to express the size of some specific intervals, as well as the number of their covering relations. In most of the cases, we are also able to refine our formulas by rank. We also provide the first results on the Möbius function of the Dyck pattern poset, giving for instance a closed expression for the Möbius function of initial intervals whose maximum is a Dyck path having exactly two peaks.
Whitney Numbers of Combinatorial Geometries and Higher-Weight Dowling Lattices

We study the Whitney numbers of the first kind of combinatorial geometries. The first part of the paper is devoted to general results relating the Möbius functions of nested atomistic lattices, extending some classical theorems in combinatorics. We then specialize our results to restriction geometries, i.e., to sublattices $\mathcal{L}(A)$ of the lattice of subspaces of an $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear space, say $X$, generated by a set of projective points $A \subseteq X$. In this context, we introduce the notion of subspace distribution, and show that partial knowledge of the latter is equivalent to partial knowledge of the Whitney numbers of $\mathcal{L}(A)$. This refines a classical result by Dowling.
The most interesting applications of our results are to be seen in the theory of higher-weight Dowling lattices (HWDLs), to which we dovote the second and most substantive part of the paper. These combinatorial geometries were introduced by Dowling in 1971 in connection with fundamental problems in coding theory, and further studied, among others, by Zaslavsky, Bonin, Kung, Brini, and Games. To date, still very little is known about these lattices. In particular, the techniques to compute their Whitney numbers have not been discovered yet. In this paper, we bring forward the theory of HWDLs, computing their Whitney numbers for new infinite families of parameters. Moreover, we show that the second Whitney numbers of HWDLs are polynomials in the underlying field size $q$, whose coefficients are expressions involving the Bernoulli numbers. This reveals a new link between combinatorics, coding theory, and number theory. We also study the asymptotics of the Whitney numbers of HWDLs as the field size grows, giving upper bounds and exact estimates in some cases. In passing, we obtain new results on the density functions of error-correcting codes.

Function classes are collections of Boolean functions on a finite set, which are fundamental objects of study in theoretical computer science. We study algebraic properties of ideals associated to function classes previously defined by the third author. We consider the broad family of intersection-closed function classes, and describe cellular free resolutions of their ideals by order complexes of the associated posets. For function classes arising from matroids, polyhedral cell complexes, and more generally interval Cohen-Macaulay posets, we show that the multigraded Betti numbers are pure, and are given combinatorially by the Möbius functions. We then apply our methods to derive bounds on the VC dimension of some important families of function classes in learning theory.
Elementary Proof of a Theorem of Hawkes, Isaacs and Özaydin
We present an elementary proof of the theorem of Hawkes, Isaacs and Özaydin, which states that $Σ\,μ_{G}(H,K)\equiv 0$ mod $d$, where $μ_{G}$ denotes the Möbius function for the subgroup lattice of a finite group $G$, $H$ ranges over the conjugates of a given subgroup $F$ of $G$ with $[G:F]$ divisible by $d$, and $K$ over the supergroups of the $H$ for which $[K:H]$ divides $d$. We apply the theorem to obtain a result on the number of solutions of $|\langle H,g\rangle|\mid n$, for said $H$ and a natural number $n$.
The present version of the article includes an additional result on a quantity studied by K.S. Brown.

A king-non-attacking permutation is a permutation $π\in S_n$ such that $|π(i)-π(i-1)|\neq 1$ for each $i \in \{2,\dots,n\}$. We investigate the structure of the poset of these permutations under the containment relation, and also provide some results on its Möbius function.

Let ${\mathcal C}_n$ be the set of all permutation cycles of length $n$ over $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Let $${\mathfrak f}_n(q):=\sum_{σ\in{\mathcal C}_{n+1}}q^{{\mathrm maj}\,σ} $$ be a $q$-analogue of the factorial $n!$, where ${\mathrm maj}$ denotes the major index. We prove a $q$-analogue of Wilson's congruence $$ {\mathfrak f}_{n-1}(q)\equivμ(n)\pmod{Φ_n(q)}, $$ where $μ$ denotes the Möbius function and $Φ_n(q)$ is the $n$-th cyclotomic polynomial.
The Möbius function of ${\rm PSL}(3,2^p)$ for any prime $p$
Let $G$ be the simple group ${\rm PSL}(3,2^p)$, where $p$ is a prime number. For any subgroup $H$ of $G$, we compute the Möbius function of $H$ in the subgroup lattice of $G$. To this aim, we describe the intersections of maximal subgroups of $G$. We point out some connections of the Möbius function with other combinatorial objects, and, in this context, we compute the reduced Euler characteristic of the order complex of the subposet of $r$-subgroups of ${\rm PGL}(3,q)$, for any prime $r$ and any prime power $q$.
Möbius functions of directed restriction species and free operads, via the generalised Rota formula
We present some tools for providing situations where the generalised Rota formula of arXiv:1801.07504 applies. As an example of this, we compute the Möbius function of the incidence algebra of any directed restriction species, free operad, or more generally free monad on a finitary polynomial monad.
2413-balloon permutations and the growth of the Möbius function
We show that the growth of the principal Möbius function on the permutation poset is exponential. This improves on previous work, which has shown that the growth is at least polynomial. We define a method of constructing a permutation from a smaller permutation which we call "ballooning". We show that if $β$ is a 2413-balloon, and $π$ is the 2413-balloon of $β$, then $μ[1, π] = 2 μ[1, β]$. This allows us to construct a sequence of permutations $π_1, π_2, π_3\ldots$ with lengths $n, n+4, n+8, \ldots$ such that $μ[1, π_{i+1}] = 2 μ[1, π_{i}]$, and this gives us exponential growth. Further, our construction method gives permutations that lie within a hereditary class with finitely many simple permutations. We also find an expression for the value of $μ[1, π]$, where $π$ is a 2413-balloon, with no restriction on the permutation being ballooned.
Restricted $r$-Stirling Numbers and their Combinatorial Applications
We study set partitions with $r$ distinguished elements and block sizes found in an arbitrary index set $S$. The enumeration of these $(S,r)$-partitions leads to the introduction of $(S,r)$-Stirling numbers, an extremely wide-ranging generalization of the classical Stirling numbers and the $r$-Stirling numbers. We also introduce the associated $(S,r)$-Bell and $(S,r)$-factorial numbers. We study fundamental aspects of these numbers, including recurrence relations and determinantal expressions. For $S$ with some extra structure, we show that the inverse of the $(S,r)$-Stirling matrix encodes the Möbius functions of two families of posets. Through several examples, we demonstrate that for some $S$ the matrices and their inverses involve the enumeration sequences of several combinatorial objects. Further, we highlight how the $(S,r)$-Stirling numbers naturally arise in the enumeration of cliques and acyclic orientations of special graphs, underlining their ubiquity and importance. Finally, we introduce related $(S,r)$ generalizations of the poly-Bernoulli and poly-Cauchy numbers, uniting many past works on generalized combinatorial sequences.
On the Homogenized Linial Arrangement: Intersection Lattice and Genocchi Numbers
Hetyei recently introduced a hyperplane arrangement (called the homogenized Linial arrangement) and used the finite field method of Athanasiadis to show that its number of regions is a median Genocchi number. These numbers count a class of permutations known as Dumont derangements. Here, we take a different approach, which makes direct use of Zaslavsky's formula relating the intersection lattice of this arrangement to the number of regions. We refine Hetyei's result by obtaining a combinatorial interpretation of the Möbius function of this lattice in terms of variants of the Dumont permutations. This enables us to derive a formula for the generating function of the characterisitic polynomial of the arrangement. The Möbius invariant of the lattice turns out to be a (nonmedian) Genocchi number. Our techniques also yield type B, and more generally Dowling arrangement, analogs of these results.

We show that if a permutation $π$ contains two intervals of length 2, where one interval is an ascent and the other a descent, then the Möbius function $μ[π]$ of the interval $[1,π]$ is zero. As a consequence, we show that the proportion of permutations of length $n$ with principal Möbius function equal to zero is asymptotically bounded below by $(1-1/e)^2\ge 0.3995$. This is the first result determining the value of $μ[1,π]$ for an asymptotically positive proportion of permutations $π$.
We also show that if a permutation $φ$ can be expressed as a direct sum of the form $α\oplus 1 \oplus β$, then any permutation $π$ containing an interval order-isomorphic to $φ$ has $μ[1, π]=0$; we deduce this from a more general result showing that $μ[σ, π]=0$ whenever $π$ contains an interval of a certain form. Finally, we show that if a permutation $π$ contains intervals isomorphic to certain pairs of permutations, or to certain permutations of length six, then $μ[1, π] = 0$.

We study the combinatorics of crystal graphs given by highest weight representations of types $A_{n}, B_{n}, C_{n}$, and $D_{n}$, uncovering new relations that exist among crystal operators. Much structure in these graphs has been revealed by local relations given by Stembridge and Sternberg. However, there exist relations among crystal operators that are not implied by Stembridge or Sternberg relations. Viewing crystal graphs as edge colored posets, we use poset topology to study them. Using the lexicographic discrete Morse functions of Babson and Hersh, we relate the Möbius function of a given interval in a crystal poset of simply laced or doubly laced type to the types of relations that can occur among crystal operators within this interval.
For a crystal of a highest weight representation of finite classical Cartan type, we show that whenever there exists an interval whose Möbius function is not equal to -1, 0, or 1, there must be a relation among crystal operators within this interval not implied by Stembridge or Sternberg relations. As an example of an application, this yields relations among crystal operators in type $C_{n}$ that were not previously known. Additionally, by studying the structure of Sternberg relations in the doubly laced case, we prove that crystals of highest weight representations of types $B_{2}$ and $C_{2}$ are not lattices.
