We define an excedance number for the multi-colored permutation group, i.e. the wreath product of Z_{r_1} x ... x Z_{r_k} with S_n, and calculate its multi-distribution with some natural parameters.
We also compute the multi-distribution of the parameters exc(pi) and fix(pi) over the sets of involutions in the multi-colored permutation group. Using this, we count the number of involutions in this group having a fixed number of excedances and absolute fixed points.
A Simple Regularization of Hypergraphs
We give a simple and natural (probabilistic) construction of hypergraph regularization. It is done just by taking a constant-bounded number of random vertex samplings only one time (thus, iteration-free). It is independent from the definition of quasi-randomness and yields a new elementary proof of a strong hypergraph regularity lemma. Consequently, as an example of its applications, we have a new self-contained proof of Szemerédi's classic theorem on arithmetic progressions (1975) as well as its multidimensional extension by Furstenberg-Katznelson (1978).

We determine under which conditions certain natural models of random constraint satisfaction problems have sharp thresholds of satisfiability. These models include graph and hypergraph homomorphism, the $(d,k,t)$-model, and binary constraint satisfaction problems with domain size 3.
Noncrossing partitions and representations of quivers

We situate the noncrossing partitions associated to a finite Coxeter group within the context of the representation theory of quivers. We describe Reading's bijection between noncrossing partitions and clusters in this context, and show that it extends to the extended Dynkin case. Our setup also yields a new proof that the noncrossing partitions associated to a finite Coxeter group form a lattice.
We also prove some new results within the theory of quiver representations. We show that the finitely generated, exact abelian, and extension-closed subcategories of the representations of a quiver $Q$ without oriented cycles are in natural bijection with the cluster-tilting objects in the associated cluster category. We also show these subcategories are exactly the finitely generated categories that can be obtained as the semistable objects with respect to some stability condition.

The Grothendieck group of the tower of symmetric group algebras has a self-dual graded Hopf algebra structure. Inspired by this, we introduce by way of axioms, a general notion of a tower of algebras and study two Grothendieck groups on this tower linked by a natural paring. Using representation theory, we show that our axioms give a structure of graded Hopf algebras on each Grothendieck groups and these structures are dual to each other. We give some examples to indicate why these axioms are necessary. We also give auxiliary results that are helpful to verify the axioms. We conclude with some remarks on generalized towers of algebras leading to a structure of generalized bialgebras (in the sense of Loday) on their Grothendieck groups.
An order-refined and generalized version of the Erdos-Szekeres theorem on convex polygons
The Erdos-Szekeres theorem states that for any natural k there is a natural number g(k) such that any set of at least g(k) points on a plane in general position contains a set of k points that are the extreme points of a convex polytope. We generalize and refine this theorem, having the general-position condition removed and a convex polygon defined as an ordered sequence of points such that the union of the edges of the polygon coincides with the boundary of its convex hull.
Combinatorial remarks on a classical theorem of Deligne
We examine Deligne's classical proof of the asphericity of simplicial arrangements from the viewpoint of the combinatorics of the poset of regions of the arrangement. This turns out to be very natural. In particular, we show that an arrangement is simplicial only if it satisfies Deligne's property on positive paths, thus answering a question posed by Luis Paris.
The Classification of Flag-transitive Steiner 4-Designs

Among the properties of homogeneity of incidence structures flag-transitivity obviously is a particularly important and natural one. Consequently, in the last decades also flag-transitive Steiner tdesigns (i.e. flag-transitive t-(v,k,1) designs) have been investigated, whereas only by the use of the classification of the finite simple groups has it been possible in recent years to essentially characterize all flag-transitive Steiner 2-designs. However, despite the finite simple group classification, for Steiner t-designs with parameters t > 2 such characterizations have remained challenging open problems for about 40 years (cf. [11, p. 147] and [12, p. 273], but presumably dating back to around 1965). The object of the present paper is to give a complete classification of all flag-transitive Steiner 4-designs. Our result relies on the classification of the finite doubly transitive permutation groups and is a continuation of the author's work [20, 21] on the classification of all flag-transitive Steiner 3-designs.

Recently Friedman proved Alon's conjecture for many families of d-regular graphs, namely that given any epsilon > 0 `most' graphs have their largest non-trivial eigenvalue at most 2 sqrt{d-1}+epsilon in absolute value; if the absolute value of the largest non-trivial eigenvalue is at most 2 sqrt{d-1} then the graph is said to be Ramanujan. These graphs have important applications in communication network theory, allowing the construction of superconcentrators and nonblocking networks, coding theory and cryptography. As many of these applications depend on the size of the largest non-trivial positive and negative eigenvalues, it is natural to investigate their distributions. We show these are well-modeled by the beta=1 Tracy-Widom distribution for several families. If the observed growth rates of the mean and standard deviation as a function of the number of vertices holds in the limit, then in the limit approximately 52% of d-regular graphs from bipartite families should be Ramanujan, and about 27% from non-bipartite families (assuming the largest positive and negative eigenvalues are independent).
Representing tropical linear spaces by circuits
We study representations of tropical linear spaces as intersections of tropical hyperplanes of circuits. For several classes of matroids, we describe minimal tropical bases. We also show that every realizable tropical linear space has a natural, tropically linear parametrization involving its cocircuits.
Abstract Young Pairs for Signed Permutation Groups

The notion of an Abstract Young (briefly: AY) representation is a natural generalization of the classical Young orthogonal form. The AY representations of the symmetric group are characterized by Adin, Brenti and Roichman in [U2]. In this paper we present several types of minimal AY representation of $D_n$ associated with standard D-Young tableaux which are a natural generalization of usual standard Young tableaux. We give an explicit combinatorial view (the representation space is spanned by certain standard tableaux while the action is a generalized Young orthogonal form) of representations which are induced into $D_n$ from minimal AY representations of one of the natural embeddings of $S_n$ into $D_n$. Then we show that these induced representations are isomorphic to the direct sum of two or three minimal AY representations of $D_n$ also associated with standard D-Young tableaux. It is done by constructing a continuous path between representation matrices where one end of the path is the mentioned direct sum; another end is the classical form of induced representation. In the last section we briefly explain how the similar results may be obtained for the group $B_n$ instead of $D_n$.

Lueck expressed the Gromov norm of a knot complement in terms of an infinite series that can be computed from a presentation of the fundamental group of the knot complement.
In this note we show that Lueck's formula, applied to torus knots, yields surprising power series expansions for the logarithm function. This generalizes an infinite series of Lehmer for the natural logarithm of 4.

The colored quasisymmetric functions, like the classic quasisymmetric functions, are known to form a Hopf algebra with a natural peak subalgebra. We show how these algebras arise as the image of the algebra of colored posets. To effect this approach we introduce colored analogs of $P$-partitions and enriched $P$-partitions. We also frame our results in terms of Aguiar, Bergeron, and Sottile's theory of combinatorial Hopf algebras and its colored analog.
Interpreting the two variable Distance enumerator of the Shi hyperplane arrangement

We give an interpretation of the coefficients of the two variable refinement $D_{\Sh_n}(q,t)$ of the distance enumerator of the Shi hyperplane arrangement $\Sh_n$ in $n$ dimensions. This two variable refinement was defined by Stanley \cite{stan-rota} for the general $r$-extended Shi hyperplane arrangements. We give an interpretation when $r=1$.
We define three natural three-dimensional partitions of the number $(n+1)^{n-1}$. The first arises from parking functions of length $n$, the second from special posets on $n$ vertices defined by Athanasiadis and the third from spanning trees on $n+1$ vertices. We call the three partitions as the parking partition, the tree-poset partition and the spanning-tree partition respectively. We show that one of the parts of the parking partition is identical to the number of edge-labelled trees with label set $\{1,2,...,n\}$ on $n+1$ unlabelled vertices. We prove that the parking partition majorises the tree-poset partition and conjecture that the spanning-tree partition also majorises the tree-poset partition.
On Derived Equivalences of Categories of Sheaves Over Finite Posets

A finite poset X carries a natural structure of a topological space. Fix a field k, and denote by D(X) the bounded derived category of sheaves of finite dimensional k-vector spaces over X. Two posets X and Y are said to be derived equivalent if D(X) and D(Y) are equivalent as triangulated categories.
We give explicit combinatorial properties of a poset which are invariant under derived equivalence, among them are the number of points, the Z-congruency class of the incidence matrix, and the Betti numbers.
Then we construct, for any closed subset Y of X, a strongly exceptional collection in D(X) and use it to show an equivalence between D(X) and the bounded derived category of a finite dimensional algebra A (depending on Y). We give conditions on X and Y under which A becomes an incidence algebra of a poset.
We deduce that a lexicographic sum of a collection of posets along a bipartite graph is derived equivalent to the lexicographic sum of the same collection along the opposite graph. This construction produces many new derived equivalences of posets and generalizes other well known ones.
As a corollary we show that the derived equivalence class of an ordinal sum of two posets does not depend on the order of summands. We give an example that this is not true for three summands.

We complete the enumeration of Dumont permutations of the second kind avoiding a pattern of length 4 which is itself a Dumont permutation of the second kind. We also consider some combinatorial statistics on Dumont permutations avoiding certain patterns of length 3 and 4 and give a natural bijection between 3142-avoiding Dumont permutations of the second kind and noncrossing partitions that uses cycle decomposition, as well as bijections between 132-, 231- and 321-avoiding Dumont permutations and Dyck paths. Finally, we enumerate Dumont permutations of the first kind simultaneously avoiding certain pairs of 4-letter patterns and another pattern of arbitrary length.
Fundamentals of media theory

Media theory is a new branch of discrete applied mathematics originally developed in mid-nineties to deal with stochastic evolution of preference relations in political science and mathematical psychology. The theory focuses on a particular semigroup of `messages' acting as transformations of a set of `states', called a `medium', whose axioms are both strong and natural. The term `medium' stems from a particular application in which the transformations formalize the effects, on an individual, of `tokens' of information delivered by the environment--that is, the `medium'. However, many different types of examples can be found, ranging from learning spaces to hypercube computers, suggesting that this concept is ubiquitous. The paper presents very basic concepts and results of media theory and is aimed at a wide body of researchers in discrete applied mathematics.
Partially directed paths in a wedge

The enumeration of lattice paths in wedges poses unique mathematical challenges. These models are not translationally invariant, and the absence of this symmetry complicates both the derivation of a functional recurrence for the generating function, and solving for it. In this paper we consider a model of partially directed walks from the origin in the square lattice confined to both a symmetric wedge defined by $Y = \pm pX$, and an asymmetric wedge defined by the lines $Y= pX$ and Y=0, where $p > 0$ is an integer. We prove that the growth constant for all these models is equal to $1+\sqrt{2}$, independent of the angle of the wedge. We derive functional recursions for both models, and obtain explicit expressions for the generating functions when $p=1$. From these we find asymptotic formulas for the number of partially directed paths of length $n$ in a wedge when $p=1$.
The functional recurrences are solved by a variation of the kernel method, which we call the ``iterated kernel method''. This method appears to be similar to the obstinate kernel method used by Bousquet-Melou. This method requires us to consider iterated compositions of the roots of the kernel. These compositions turn out to be surprisingly tractable, and we are able to find simple explicit expressions for them. However, in spite of this, the generating functions turn out to be similar in form to Jacobi $θ$-functions, and have natural boundaries on the unit circle.
A natural family of flag matroids

A flag matroid can be viewed as a chain of matroids linked by quotients. Flag matroids, of which relatively few interesting families have previously been known, are a particular class of Coxeter matroids. In this paper we give a family of flag matroids arising from an enumeration problem that is a generalization of the tennis ball problem. These flag matroids can also be defined in terms of lattice paths and they provide a generalization of the lattice path matroids of [Bonin et al., JCTA 104 (2003)].
Random patterns generated by random permutations of natural numbers

We survey recent results on some one- and two-dimensional patterns generated by random permutations of natural numbers. In the first part, we discuss properties of random walks, evolving on a one-dimensional regular lattice in discrete time $n$, whose moves to the right or to the left are induced by the rise-and-descent sequence associated with a given random permutation. We determine exactly the probability of finding the trajectory of such a permutation-generated random walk at site $X$ at time $n$, obtain the probability measure of different excursions and define the asymptotic distribution of the number of "U-turns" of the trajectories - permutation "peaks" and "through". In the second part, we focus on some statistical properties of surfaces obtained by randomly placing natural numbers $1,2,3, >...,L$ on sites of a 1d or 2d square lattices containing $L$ sites. We calculate the distribution function of the number of local "peaks" - sites the number at which is larger than the numbers appearing at nearest-neighboring sites - and discuss some surprising collective behavior emerging in this model.
