In the setting of distributions taking values in a $C^\ast$-algebra $\mathcal{B}$, we define generalized Jacobi parameters and study distributions they generate. These include numerous known examples and one new family, of $\mathcal{B}$-valued free binomial distributions, for which we are able to compute free convolution powers. Moreover, we develop a convenient combinatorial method for calculating the joint distributions of $\mathcal{B}$-free random variables with Jacobi parameters, utilizing two-color non-crossing partitions. This leads to several new explicit examples of free convolution computations in the operator-valued setting. Additionally, we obtain a counting algorithm for the number of two-color non-crossing pairings of relative finite depth, using only free probabilistic techniques. Finally, we show that the class of distributions with Jacobi parameters is not closed under free convolution.

The Dynkin algebras are the hereditary artin algebras of finite representation type. The paper exhibits the number of support-tilting modules for any Dynkin algebra. Since the support-tilting modules for a Dynkin algebra correspond bijectively to the non-crossing partitions of the same type, the calculations presented here may also be considered as a categorification of results concerning non-crossing partitions.

We construct a compactification of the space of circular planar electrical networks studied by Curtis-Ingerman-Morrow and De Verdiere-Gitler-Vertigan, using cactus networks. We embed this compactification as a linear slice of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, and relate Kenyon and Wilson's grove measurements to Postnikov's boundary measurements. Intersections of the slice with the positroid stratification leads to a class of electroid varieties, indexed by matchings. The partial order on matchings arising from electrical networks is shown to be dual to a subposet of affine Bruhat order. The analogues of matroids in this setting are certain distinguished collections of non-crossing partitions.

We present a categorification of the non-crossing partitions given by crystallographic Coxeter groups. This involves a category of certain bilinear lattices, which are essentially determined by a symmetrisable generalised Cartan matrix together with a particular choice of a Coxeter element. Examples arise from Grothendieck groups of hereditary artin algebras.

We investigate the role that non-crossing partitions play in the study of positroids, a class of matroids introduced by Postnikov. We prove that every positroid can be constructed uniquely by choosing a non-crossing partition on the ground set, and then freely placing the structure of a connected positroid on each of the blocks of the partition. This structural result yields several combinatorial facts about positroids. We show that the face poset of a positroid polytope embeds in a poset of weighted non-crossing partitions. We enumerate connected positroids, and show how they arise naturally in free probability. Finally, we prove that the probability that a positroid on [n] is connected equals 1/e^2 asymptotically.
The number of complete exceptional sequences for a Dynkin algebra

We consider Dynkin algebras, these are the hereditary artin algebras of finite representation type. The indecomposable modules for a Dynkin algebra correspond bijectively to the positive roots of a Dynkin diagram. Given a Dynkin algebra with n simple modules, a complete exceptional sequence is a sequence M_1,..., M_n of indecomposable modules such that Hom(M_i,M_j) = 0 = Ext(M_i,M_j) for i > j. The aim of this paper is to determine the number of complete exceptional sequences for any Dynkin algebra.
There are direct connections between the representation theory of a Dynkin algebra A and the lattice L of non-crossing partitions of the same Dynkin type: As Ingalls and Thomas have shown, the lattice of the thick subcategories of mod A can be identified with L. Hubery and Krause have pointed out that this identification provides a bijection between the complete exceptional sequences for A and the maximal chains in L. Thus, our calculations may also be considered as a categorification of results concerning non-crossing partitions.

We show that braid groups with at most 6 strands are CAT(0) using the close connection between these groups, the associated non-crossing partition complexes and the embeddability of their diagonal links into spherical buildings of type A. Furthermore, we prove that the orthoscheme complex of any bounded graded modular complemented lattice is CAT(0), giving a partial answer to a conjecture of Brady and McCammond.
On Multiple Pattern Avoiding Set Partitions

We study classes of set partitions determined by the avoidance of multiple patterns, applying a natural notion of partition containment that has been introduced by Sagan. We say that two sets S and T of patterns are equivalent if for each n, the number of partitions of size n avoiding all the members of S is the same as the number of those that avoid all the members of T.
Our goal is to classify the equivalence classes among two-element pattern sets of several general types. First, we focus on pairs of patterns {σ,τ}, where σ is a pattern of size three with at least two distinct symbols and τ is an arbitrary pattern of size k that avoids σ. We show that pattern-pairs of this type determine a small number of equivalence classes; in particular, the classes have on average exponential size in k. We provide a (sub-exponential) upper bound for the number of equivalence classes, and provide an explicit formula for the generating function of all such avoidance classes, showing that in all cases this generating function is rational.
Next, we study partitions avoiding a pair of patterns of the form {1212,τ}, where τ is an arbitrary pattern. Note that partitions avoiding 1212 are exactly the non-crossing partitions. We provide several general equivalence criteria for pattern pairs of this type, and show that these criteria account for all the equivalences observed when τ has size at most six.
In the last part of the paper, we perform a full classification of the equivalence classes of all the pairs {σ,τ}, where σ and τ have size four.

We introduce and study the notion of k-divisible elements in a non-commutative probability space. A k-divisible element is a (non-commutative) random variable whose n-th moment vanishes whenever n is not a multiple of k. First, we consider the combinatorial convolution \ast in the lattices NC of non-crossing partitions and NC^k of k-divisible non-crossing partitions and show that convolving k times with the zeta-function in NC is equivalent to convolving once with the zeta-function in NC^k. Furthermore, when x is k-divisible, we derive a formula for the free cumulants of x^k in terms of the free cumulants of x, involving k-divisible non-crossing partitions. Second, we prove that if a and s are free and s is k-divisible then sps and a are free, whenever p is any polynomial (on a and s) of degree k - 2 on s. Moreover, we define a notion of R-diagonal k-tuples and prove similar results. Next, we show that free multiplicative convolution between a measure concentrated in the positive real line and a probability measure with k-symmetry is well defined. Analytic tools to calculate this convolution are developed. Finally, we concentrate on free additive powers of k-symmetric distributions and prove that μt is a well defined probability measure, for all t > 1. We derive central limit theorems and Poisson type ones. More generally, we consider freely infinitely divisible measures and prove that free infinite divisibility is maintained under the mapping μ\rightarrow μ^k . We conclude by focusing on (k-symmetric) free stable distributions, for which we prove a reproducing property generalizing the ones known for one sided and real symmetric free stable laws.

We derive a formula for the expected number of blocks of a given size from a non-crossing partition chosen uniformly at random. Moreover, we refine this result subject to the restriction of having a number of blocks given. Furthermore, we generalize to k-divisible partitions. In particular, we find that, asymptotically, the expected number of blocks of size t of a k-divisible non-crossing partition of nk elements chosen uniformly at random is (kn+1)/(k+1)^(t+1). Similar results are obtained for type B and type D k-divisible non-crossing partitions of Armstrong.

A weak order on the set of maximal chains of the non-crossing partition lattice is introduced and studied. A $0$-Hecke algebra action is used to compute the radius of the graph on these chains in which two chains are adjacent if they differ in exactly one element.
Asymptotic Enumeration of Non-crossing Partitions on Surfaces
We generalize the notion of non-crossing partition on a disk to general surfaces with boundary. For this, we consider a surface $Σ$ and introduce the number $C_Σ(n)$ of non-crossing partitions of a set of $n$ points laying on the boundary of $Σ$. Our proofs use bijective techniques arising from map enumeration, joint with the symbolic method and singularity analysis on generating functions. An outcome of our results is that the exponential growth of $C_Σ(n)$ is the same as the one of the $n$-th Catalan number, i.e., does not change when we move from the case where $Σ$ is a disk to general surfaces with boundary.
Dynamic Programming for Graphs on Surfaces
We provide a framework for the design and analysis of dynamic programming algorithms for surface-embedded graphs on n vertices and branchwidth at most k. Our technique applies to general families of problems where standard dynamic programming runs in 2^{O(k log k)} n steps. Our approach combines tools from topological graph theory and analytic combinatorics. In particular, we introduce a new type of branch decomposition called "surface cut decomposition", generalizing sphere cut decompositions of planar graphs introduced by Seymour and Thomas, which has nice combinatorial properties. Namely, the number of partial solutions that can be arranged on a surface cut decomposition can be upper-bounded by the number of non-crossing partitions on surfaces with boundary. It follows that partial solutions can be represented by a single-exponential (in the branchwidth k) number of configurations. This proves that, when applied on surface cut decompositions, dynamic programming runs in 2^{O(k)} n steps. That way, we considerably extend the class of problems that can be solved in running times with a single-exponential dependence on branchwidth and unify/improve most previous results in this direction.
A poset fiber theorem for doubly Cohen-Macaulay posets and its applications to non-crossing partitions and injective words

This paper studies topological properties of the lattices of non-crossing partitions of types A and B and of the poset of injective words. Specifically, it is shown that after the removal of the bottom and top elements (if existent) these posets are doubly Cohen-Macaulay. This strengthens the well-known facts that these posets are Cohen-Macaulay. Our results rely on a new poset fiber theorem which turns out to be a useful tool to prove double (homotopy) Cohen-Macaulayness of a poset. Applications to complexes of injective words are also included.

The associahedron is an object that has been well studied and has numerous applications, particularly in the theory of operads, the study of non-crossing partitions, lattice theory and more recently in the study of cluster algebras. We approach the associahedron from the point of view of discrete homotopy theory. We study the abelianization of the discrete fundamental group, and show that it is free abelian of rank $\binom{n+2}{4}$. We also find a combinatorial description for a basis of this rank. We also introduce the exchange module of the type $A_n$ cluster algebra, used to model the relations in the cluster algebra. We use the discrete fundamental group to the study of exchange module, and show that it is also free abelian of rank $\binom{n+2}{3}$.

We define higher order infinitesimal noncommutative probability space and infinitesimal non-crossing cumulant functionals. In this framework, we generalize to higher order the notion of infinitesimal freeness, via a vanishing of mixed cumulants condition. We also introduce and study some non-crossing partitions related to this notion. Finally, as an application, we show how to compute the successive derivatives of the free convolution of two time-indexed families of distributions from their individual derivatives.
Cyclic sieving for generalised non-crossing partitions associated to complex reflection groups of exceptional type - the details
We prove that the generalised non-crossing partitions associated to well-generated complex reflection groups of exceptional type obey two different cyclic sieving phenomena, as conjectured by Armstrong, respectively by Bessis and Reiner. This manuscript accompanies the paper "Cyclic sieving for generalised non-crossing partitions associated to complex reflection groups of exceptional type" [arXiv:1001.0028], for which it provides the computational details.

We study the Hurwitz action of the classical braid group on factorisations of a Coxeter element c in a well-generated complex reflection group W. It is well-known that the Hurwitz action is transitive on the set of reduced decompositions of c in reflections. Our main result is a similar property for the primitive factorisations of c, i.e. factorisations with only one factor which is not a reflection. The motivation is the search for a geometric proof of Chapoton's formula for the number of chains of given length in the non-crossing partitions lattice NCP_W. Our proof uses the properties of the Lyashko-Looijenga covering and the geometry of the discriminant of W.
Complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials in Jucys-Murphy elements and the Weingarten function
A connection is made between complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials in Jucys-Murphy elements and the unitary Weingarten function from random matrix theory. In particular we show that $h_r(J_1,...,J_n),$ the complete homogeneous symmetric polynomial of degree $r$ in the JM elements, coincides with the $r$th term in the asymptotic expansion of the Weingarten function. We use this connection to determine precisely which conjugacy classes occur in the class basis resolution of $h_r(J_1,...,J_n),$ and to explicitly determine the coefficients of the classes of minimal height when $r < n.$ These coefficients, which turn out to be products of Catalan numbers, are governed by the Moebius function of the non-crossing partition lattice $NC(n).$
